  • Throughout History there have been many execution methods used to condemn someone. Written into pirate code and law was the punishment of marooning, in which someone was left on a desert island to die. This was brutal as the pirate had to contend with their demise, and they tried their best to survive. It was used so much that certain pirates became known as 'marooners.' There were some people who managed to survive, but this was rare.

That's why this episode is interesting because Jack Sparrow is the only reason I know of marooning.

…..AND to find that the last shot for himself in his deepest darkest moment of despair… the powder is ruined by the damp.

It seems there was honour among thieves if there was a pirates’ code. Marooning may not have been one of the worser punishments if confinement involved fending for one’s self. The “Castaway” book and subsequent film with Oliver Reed was written by a woman’s experience who suffered septic sores from sandflea bites. Sustenance was achieved through spearfishing but the character of Oliver Reed would have died had it not been for his female companion. Would Crusoe have survived had it not been for Friday. Critics say yes, that Friday benefited from the civilizing effect of Crusoe who converted him to Christianity.
