. . . and yet it was, and still is Mike Brewer, that made things happen. Ed China and Ant wouldn't have been heard of without Mike Brewer being the bright spark that made it all, and I mean ALL go in the right direction. Pity too many of the oily rags brigade are jealous of his unique abilities . .

I watched the show because of Ed China and the garage work being explained in a no bull way by a guy who was excited to be there doing what he loved, fixing junk that should probably have just been scrapped, the breakdown of costs at the end never adds in the 500 man hours that went into the car.
Mike Brewer is a bit of a knob and whilst a presenter is an important part of a show, you do need to be likeable. Mike unfortunately is not particularly likeable or charismatic. Ed was the show, that is why we all watched it. Sorry if this is not a popular statement.

Calling Ant Anstead an immediate fan favourite is stretching things a bit, as many fans felt Edd China was the heart of the show and that heart had been ripped out when he left. Anstead seems like a likeable guy and a competent mechanic, but let's face it: he didn't get to do even half of the work China did, which was the main reason why China left the show. Ratings took a hit and I can't shake the feeling that in retrospect Anstead can't have really liked being a skilled mechanic that only did fast-service type jobs so Brewer could get more screen time.
Wheeler Dealers started out as a show around "Wheeler Dealer" Mike Brewer, who would find a neglected car that showed promise for a quick profit, fix it and spice it up a little and then sell it. Kind of what his spin-off series "Trading Up" showed. But because Brewer wanted to be more than just another dime-in-a-dozen "Wheeler Dealer", he set out to buy more exotic cars, which meant that Edd China was added to the show for the more complex fixes. This added a value that other shows at the time didn't have. China quickly became the fans favorite, so his role was expanded, inevitably reducing Brewer's screen time, something that Brewer probably didn't mind too much in the beginning, as the show hugely gained in popularity because of China. But as China's role kept growing, Brewer must have felt his role was being diminished a bit too much and he stepped in to do more of the work than just buying and selling, like looking for the hard-to-get spare parts or the master craftsman that could fix/replace some part(s) that were no longer available. I'd say that this is the period that the show was at its peak popularity.
Then the show was sold out to the Americans and they moved to the US. After a couple of shows, the Americans decided that they wanted to squeeze more profit out of the show, so the more complex fixes had to go. China, just like many of the fans, felt that this really dumbed down the show and reduced "Wheeler Dealers" to just another dime-in-a-dozen quick car fix show, so he left. Fellow skilled mechanic Anstead jumped in, but as he left rather quickly after only two seasons, it's hard not to think that in hindsight he also wasn't happy with how much the part of the mechanic was dumbed down and even worse continued to be dumbed down, causing him to leave after only two seasons.
Wheeler Dealers saw a huge drop in popularity when fan-favorite China left and then, as the show kept being dumbed down for the sake of more profit, the fans that did hang on to see how Anstead would fare, started leaving as well. Brewer doesn't even seem to care how much the popularity of the show has declined or about first China and then Anstead leaving, as long as he keeps being paid a nice salary. For many of the "old" fans of Wheeler Dealers, Brewer has sold out what was once a very informative show that went way further with showing how successfully buying, fixing and selling cars for a profit actually works and reduced it back to being "just another Wheeler Dealer show where cars are bought and flipped for a profit."

Exactly this. I loved the older shows because I learned something. I don't even watch wheeler dealers anymore. I still watch Edd's new show tho.

    • @Sennaxm71
      @Sennaxm71 4 месяца назад +5

Definitely, the part of the mechanic was almost made out to be easy, after being one for nearly 40 years, some of the jobs they did were properly big jobs, and Mike would make out that it was an easy job, so we would then get customers saying "oh they only took 10 minutes to do that on wheeler dealers" completely missing the fact that 2 hours of stripping the engine before you get to the part to be changed wasn't on screen.
Also when Edd was doing it, it encouraged some people to try and tackle the easier jobs themselves, some with positive results, some not so, but at least they were having a go, and got to realise that it's not as easy as they first think, at least we then get a little appreciation lol

    • @tjroelsma
      @tjroelsma 4 месяца назад +21

@@Sennaxm71 Agreed, Edd was as much a teacher as he was a mechanic.
But there was a second thing the show made clear without ever saying it: if you want to do a job properly, you'll need lots of professional tools, skill and a garage.
Brewer tried to sell the "everyone can be a Wheeler Dealer because fixing neglected cars is simple", whereas Edd showed that although some cars seem relatively easy to fix, it takes a lot of work, skills and tools to fix them right. And that to me was the real strength of the show: you can do it, but only if you really know what you're doing.

This is so typical of American Executives, they take something that works well and then (because they think they are so AWESOME) squeeze it for profits and kill the essence of what it was.
In my country, whenever Americans buy out a company, all the locals leave because they know that American management practices will be incoming.

Don't think it would be as popular without Mike, he may be a bit Marmite for some like Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear ( I know plenty of people that hate him ) without Jeremy the show would not be in the place it was back in the day and proof of that was Jeremy's farm show it was a huge success and showed alot more of the real Jeremy and people who hated him on top gear somehow grew to at least like him a bit either way he is entertaining to watch, I have watched plenty of interviews after Edd left the show and yes things changed out of both of there control but I really think Mike got the raw end of the stick whether you like him or not he is only human and at least he stayed with the show and it had its dark days in America but it is still going and I still love it with Elvis he is a genius, I watch Edd on RUclips as well and he even says that Mike doesn't deserve the stick he got, I think if they replaced Mike in America with even someone already famous like Richard rowlings from gas monkey who I also like the show would have flopped the only thing that kept me watching was the familiar face good old Mike and they picked wellcwith Ant but he was already working on the show well before Edd left so was behind the scenes but pretty much ready to take over, can't remember who replaced Ant but we ended up with Elvis who with Mike make the show great again back in the UK

Met Edd at the old place where the show was filmed. Top bloke. He spoke to me as a human being and showed me around the place. Saw the "fastest sofa" and a few other toys! Stopped watching after Edd left. Fortunately, Mike wasn't around. Didn't want to meet him anyway as I find him too up himself. Also qas told that Paul did quite a lot of off camera work on the cars but he never seemed to get any credit. Didn't gel with Ant as much as Edd but at least Ant is more watchable than Brewer.

Ant seems to be a nice guy but I couldn't get through the entire video. To say that Mike Brewer is the star of the show indicates that someone is absolutely clueless as to the show's audience. Or to good taste. The cars and the mechanics are the stars of the show and always have been. Mike Brewer is merely - and barely - tolerated in his too frequent sweaty soundbites. How is it not possible that the producers of this show don't know that? Do they not watch the show? Are they perfectly content riding on the reputation that the mechanics, particularly Ed China, are responsible for? Are they stupid? No. Nobody is that stupid. It's clear that Brewer has a manila envelope full of incriminating information and/or photos on those very same higher-ups. He's a stain on what could still be a good show. But I suppose there's not that much Oxi Clean in the world. Not that I have an opinion on the matter.

Having left WD about the same time Edd China did, not even Mr. Antstead's formidable talents were going to save what was fast becoming another "Discovery Reality" whizz bang. It was not the first good show they ruined with created drama. I soon realized that traditional TV in the US was all already that way or getting there. Sorry, Any, about the American broad; some of Christine's lesser sides sometimes did show through the thin veil of the editors seeking any and all "higher drama" to spike the ratings with, so you should have been warned.

I thought Ant explained this thoroughly and in depth his vocabulary was plain methodical easy to listen to, Edd good guy spoke to fast and not plain , Elvis capable but must chose the correct time to speak to make heard. I thought Ant was better than Brewer who has an accent and gable's on.

So, what has Ant done with himself now (2024?) Ex english policeman, why? Watched a show where he built a car, he came over as very arrogant. Neither Edd China nor Marc Priestley have ever been like that when I have met on and off camera. Same goes for Mike Brewer to be honest. All three have been very decent people to meet and work with. Now, just don't get me started on various Motor Bike magazines and the complete up there own arseholes the riders are. Not all but most. "Do you know who I am?).......nope, do you know who I am? Nope. Aleast we have something in common, my reply.

Edd made the show. Mike comes across as a typical dodgy car dealer, don't know if that is what they wanted him to look like for the show, but he comes across as a typical dodgy car dealer.
Ant came in and because of his marriage at the time to Christina Hall, who is big in Reality TV on HGTV, after the first season on Wheeler Dealers he was given a follow on series called "Ant Anstead Mater Mechanic" 😂 Never heard of him before Wheeler Dealers and within a series he's called a Master Mechanic 😂 Straight away I thought is this a stich up or what.
Edd made the show, the new dude Elvis isn't too bad, obviously a good mechanic being involved in F1 somewhere, but lost interest after Edd left.
Never really liked Mike, or Ant when he came along, which is when I stopped watching it only catching one every now and then.

I don't dislike Mike either. He's that quirky sales guy but he's not a bad guy really? I could see that Edd was a fair bit more feistier and a little bit less showy? Ed worked to a standard so where their personalities clashed was mostly around budgets and Edd not willing to do a half arsed job for the sake of his reputation on TV series? So he went around Mike a few times to ensure the projects were done correctly? I could also see Edd showing his value when he would justify the additional expense on his passion project (the crazy amphibious car project I think that nearly broke poor Mike?) But even though Edd did do the wrong thing a couple of times going over budget, you could see the he really tried to make up for this by cutting huge costs in many of the other projects that were less sentimental to him? Mike being Mike he's always going to want to make more profits cause he's the car sales guy?
But then when they did that yellow Escort (which was friggin awesome btw) you could tell Edd wasn't happy this time around as it was Mike that sent that project over budget? They had already spent heaps on the colour change being yellow... So there was controversy with that project from and outset and a very much an indifference between them? You could tell that this was where things went sour? I'm not sure if the amphibious car was before or after the escort but the vibe felt very tit for tat with both of those projects?
I personally sided with Mike as I thought the amphibious car was whack and Edd had lost his marbles?
I also don't think Edd calculated the man hours honestly for that project? I think he would have had to have thrown in many many undocumented man hours for free.....just to keep Mike happy? In other words the budget went ball buster fairly quickly. That's when you could tell Mike's tone wasn't happy because he knew that he was delivering an episode that was unrealistically fake and that's not what wheeler dealer was about?
But in saying that most of the audience wasn't really watching the show because they were wanting to became car dealers themselves but more along the lines of self restoration themselves and the idea of keeping to a budget is to prevent heart ache or even potential lost marriages out of a car project lol.
So it was really great to look at the break down of costs at the end of build, as this is the thing that keeps people motivated to keep pressing forward on a difficult old vehicle restoration?
Probably my most favourite car they built was the Polish 3 cylinder 2 stroke Sennor (spelling?) Not a car I am personally interested in, but wow what an impressive restoration that was! It was kind of when the show was at its peak in my opinion

The blue mini moke was when Edd and Mike where synchronised most. Even I thought and crazy white roll bar was going to be a fail?
But your know what, Mike was on the money big time with that car!
I remember watching it and thinking "I know Edd loves these things, but I don't think he realises how much of a steal they got that moke for? Edd knew all the history and all the military background and about where all their faults were.......but Mike knew exactly what they were worth and he knew they were worth way more than Edd was willing to admit?
You could feel this when they had to do all the wheel bearings and you could sense Edd was kind of annoyed at the at the mounting costs just climbing? That's because he didn't really believe that Mike could get what they sold it for?
I told my dad that they could probably get another $2K more for that moke again if they could wait out for it. Wheeler Dealers also had to try sell the cars by certain time due to the budget of the production in doing the series, which is realistic. And that Moke sold quite a few months after it was finished as it was bitterly cold by that time..... almost the worst time of year to sell such a car!
Had they waited till summer and parked it up down at a seaside cafe somewhere that thing would have raked in a mint! You could tell that Mike knew this also.
That's why I didn't dislike Mike. He did his homework

I liked Wheeler Dealers, but could not stand Mike Brewer or the "Ant" bloke. Mike is just a vile sweaty little oinker, and "Ant" is a patronising , hey look at at me because I am lovely and so clever, type. Never liked him. His style was like he was talking to a bunch of 5 year olds, just like a kids TV presenter, " This is a screwdriver, be careful, it`s pointy " that sort of crap.
Ed China was great And Marc Priestley was good as well, they knew their stuff, but I reckon " Ant " was shown what to do by folk behind the scenes.

I am a massive fan of Ed China, he definitely raised the show to dizzy heights. It was another mistake by British producers to sell out to an American network and Ant was just a bit too pompous and gullible, falling into a love trap that has left him stuck in America now. Elvis I like, he is an every day bloke oozing with top tier mechanical talent, so had he taken over and the show stayed in England it would be even higher rated now.

    • @petersmith7126

Elvis is as good a replacement for Ed as we could ever have asked for .... Moving to the USA was the biggest mistake the show ever made, seeing some yank barge being turned around once in a while was ok but seeing it every week was bloody boring and even Americanised versions of European cars didn't have the same impact .... What I also missed in the states was links to wee firms that Mike would track down to repair stuff for him
