@@montreux82 i’d say mitch mitchell is a far better drummer than moon, im not discrediting him i just think mitchell’s drumming is more complex as he tends to use jazz elements in his playing. thats what makes him so great, im a big fan of drummers throwing in stuff used in jazz music. i’d say my top 3 favourite drummers are bonzo, bill ward and mitch.
He certainly wasn't underrated at the time when he and Ginger Baker were constantly vying for top drummer in polls in the UK at least. I remember seeing The Jimi Hendrix experience for first time on Top of the Pops playing Hey Joe and it was Mitch that impressed me more than Jimi to be honest. He seemed to be playing all over and across the beat in a way I'd never seen before. He showed that you didn't need to wait until bar 8 to put in a fill. A perfect drummer for Jimi's flamboyant playing
Amazing performance. In those days, drummers really knew about dynamics, leaving space, playing cool fills when it was needed, and playing for the song...This was probably done in a couple of takes, with no more than 3-4 mics. No click track, of course. Just grooving to Jimi 's playing. Drum heaven.
Mitch Mitchell really went hard on this track. The pauses and pickups with the bass drum are absolutely awesome. Keeps the timing but tons of broken rhythms, how great!
Fantastic! What an age we live in that this is possible and good people make the videos. Thank you. I've always rated Mitch highly. Like Reni from the Stone Roses for example it's just intrinsic to the overall groove. Thanks again.
Thank you for putting this up. My band has just added this track to our set list and I was hard to hear what Mitch was playing on the record. Seeing this also shows a huge difference between a real drummer and programmed machine drums. He plays so many variations that each segment is different and adds so much to the spontaneous feeling of his playing. I guess he never played the same song the same way every time.
This is so helpful when it comes to learning this song accurately note for note. Is there any chance you isolate the drums in Crosstown Traffic at all? I'm trying to learn how to play that song accurately and it would be very helpful if you could isolate the drums in that particular track. Thanks very much!
@@LeoMoscatelo Brian Jones (of the Rolling Stones) plays a vibraslap on this, that's the thwack sound starting at 8 seconds into the song, which continues at the end of the drum beat for the rest of the song
I've been trying to find out what that percussion sound is. Sounds like a high pitched wood block drenched in reverb to me. Wonder if there's any official info on that. A vibraslap is a much more sustained effect, a la Ozzy's "Crazy Train"
@@LeoMoscatelo I suspected that was the case. The mix is too messy and dynamic to put gates on each drum to convert to midi hits. Shame. Such a lovely piece of drumming from Mitchell
It is a crime against humanity that this magic is so buried in the mix.
So true.
Comment of the year.
Unreal, he was incredible, but let's face it, if ur Hendricks drummer, are u ever gunna shine? Lol.
I think Mitchell was as gd as Keith moon. But because of who's drummer he was. No body knows his name
@@joefoster2012I like Mitch drumming more than Keith Moon and I would say Mitch was better drummer, but it is my point of view. Hard to say tho.

His fills at the end are so sweet. I love the way that snare sounds.
This has so much more of a jazz sound than i ever realized i love the volume dips to give it that breathing quality.

No, he’s not. Learn to use your own vocabulary and don’t just repeat what everyone else writes.
