Elmont, NY is not “out of the way”, it is on the boundary between NYC and Nassau County. You can literally walk from the arena to NYC. Unlike the Isles old barn, Nassau Coliseum, UBS is accessible by transit via the LIRR and buses.
If you had never been to the 1975-2008 Yankee stadium you can’t call it a dump. It was the greatest stadium. The atmosphere, the big games, the teams and legends that played there.
It was a great stadium. It did very much need renovations, but given Fenway and Wrigley could do so, the Yankees DEFINITELY could have. Demolishing part of the oversized upper deck, expanding and opening up the concourses to more natural light, improving the food options, building a real batters eye, and connecting the bleachers to the rest of the ballpark would've done the trick fine.
You know what's beyond the left field upper deck at Citi Field? A barren industrial wasteland called the Iron Triangle that was once filled entirely with auto garages and sheds that no one wanted to look at because it looked like a 3rd world country over there. It's been a blight on the city of NY since Shea Stadium opened and they've been trying to rehabilitate that area forever. One administration after another have tried and it finally started gaining traction in the last 5 years. I always hoped the Mets would open up a baseball centric entertainment district akin to the Braves new SunTrust Park over there. Instead we're getting a new MLS stadium for the NYCFC across the street in 2027 with plans for a new commercial/residential neighborhood to arise around the new stadium to be finished by 2032.
@@patrickwagner6247 Most of the shops were either shuttered or moved to the Hunts Point section of the Bronx in the last 10 years. I'd say 20% of these auto shops are still there holding out hope. They're mostly concentrated next to the highway at the moment but their days are unfortunately numbered. For a flood prone area without a sewage system of any sort or city services, it somehow thrived for the last 50+ years. This is why no one ever uses the Bullpen gate to enter the stadium unless they're pregaming at Ebbs Brewing around the right field area. It was just a sketchy dump over there.
@@CoffinDaggers yeah, we were in from Baltimore to see games at both stadiums, hit up Coney Island, and Times Square. We came in on a bus, then hit the subway to Citi Field first thing. Since we were early, we walked around and "discovered" that area waiting for the gates to open.
@@CoffinDaggers that area is worth an amazing amount of money, and the auto shop owners there were holding out for a king’s ransom, which they eventually got
The Jets stadium in the west side of Manhattan would create a nightmare issue. Infrastructure is very important as well, subways and streets surrounding the stadium isn't set up for a stadium of this magnitude. NYC already grapples with tourism surges as well as being an overcrowded city. I don't know how you get 70,000 fans in and out of the west side of Manhattan for an event. When a game ends, you can only fit so many people onto a subway platform. This would require crowd control by cutting off the entry of riders to a subway station until a platform clears out. Basically, its more than just building a stadium.
UBS Arena I think had an exterior inspired in part by the facade of the Belmont Park grandstand next door. Now, the Belmont Park grandstand is on its way out, to be replaced with a smaller facility over the next few years....
The only way I see Citi field getting a roof is if they Strike a deal with the Jets or Giants to play there. There's just little reason to have a roof on these stadiums. The rain delay issues are more of problem with MLB's relucatance to cancel/reschedule games and then make fans wait 3 hours before canceling. As far as the Bills new stadium goes, they intentionally went without a roof becuase a roof would put the stadium in the running for a superbowl location. The city of Buffalo doesn't have the infrastructure to support a Superbowl match.
And also most residents in or near the proposed new Bills Indoor Stadium opposed it. Thus why they are staying in Suburban Orchard Park with a new modern stadium. Ps As someone that has been to Buffalo myself a few times(not yet for a Bills Game)ideally they need to build a HOV/Express Bus lane with the local Mass Transit System NFTA(Niagara Frontier Transit Authority) along Interstate 90 aka I call the Western NY Thruway between the new stadium and Downtown Buffalo on game days.
@@scotttild I am sure that a major factor in why the Bills are staying in Suburban Orchard Park. With that said, no doubt the extra $1 Billion Dollar (maybe more) to make it a domed stadium either in Downtown Buffalo or the Orchard Park site was the main reason not to do so.
They have express busses on the way out right on the main road outside the stadium. They are supposed to leave 15-30 minutes after the game and head to major transportation centers in the region that have park and rides and connecting services. Citi Field unveiled a new video board this season and it's the biggest video board in all of MLB right now. I know you're an armchair stadium historian but If you actually ever attended a Mets game at Citi Field, you'd notice what a HUGE difference it makes for the in game experience at the ballpark. Go to PNC Park or Citizen's Bank park and see how puny their video board is compared to the one at Citi Field. It's not even close.
That also goes for Ginger’s description of Milwaukee. I went to a game there last season, a total annihilation of the Brewers, and the atmosphere was fun, upbeat, and had a real beer culture emblematic of the Brewers. And the park was quite nice also
I'm guessing the roof from the Metrodome was too damaged from when the roof collapsed in, for Syracuse to use the translucent panels in theirs. That was the main reason why Minnesota built US Bank Stadium, and played at University of Minnesota's football stadium for a few seasons. There was just no reason to put a new "hefty bag" on the roof of the Metrodome.
The West Side site is a no go, as there are buildings there now. They could have considered the space near Citi Field but they are putting a soccer stadium there.

Another 35-40 years?!! Old Yankee Stadium, if you include the renovated version, lasted 85 years. This new one is not my favorite, but it's state of the art and has everything you need for, - you know - BASEBALL. It should last a long, long - long time. Same with Citi Field. (Hell, even Shea Stadium lasted 44 years and it was a TERRIBLE stadium.)
Love your videos, man. But one thing that I disagree with you on is this obsession with retractable roofs. I get why you feel they’re needed. But let’s face it. Stadiums are becoming uglier and blander even with those monstrosities. Let’s keep stadiums simple. I’m waiting for designers to go back to having stadiums be like the old yards. That’s the reason I think PNC works. It’s a simple design. Nothing fancy. But the views, the simplicity, two decks, smaller capacity. That’s what gives the place a unique charm, a personality. Most of the recently built stadium are ugly, and they just plain suck.
The fact that the NY Giants and NY Jets don’t currently play in the state of New York is a big problem. IMO I would love if the Giants played in Long Island and the Jets played in Upstate, preferably Albany or Syracuse.
@Depressed Ginger: A "retractable roof" over Citi Field might be like that sliding Kansas City roof idea, in one of your other videos, so that it could cover Citi and NYCFC Fields as needed. Might as well get the two-fer while you're at it and have both teams kick in (if you will). The Tennis Center is next door-- have them explain how their retractable roofs work... ;-)
A lot of people still call it Rich Stadium or the Ralph. People never seemed to get behind Highmark Stadium or New Era Field as the names. Rich Stadium > The Ralph >>> Highmark Stadium.
The thing with the obnoxiously giant walls/advertising at both Yankee Stadium and CitiField isn't intended to take away views of the city so much as it is to make it harder,or impossible, for fans outside of the stadium to see inside. It's the same reason the Green Monster at Fenway Park exists. Greedy owners. When you rode the 4 train pulling up to the 161 Street-Yankee Stadium stop, you could see into the stadium through a sliver in the walls, and I think you could even see into the stadium, albeit partially, from the uptown platform of the station. When the new Stadium was built, they made a point of closing off the walls. The stadium itself is a wind tunnel when it's cold, but with such a traditional culture,it won't see a roof anytime soon. I think the only way Yankee Stadium would ever have a roof is if the climate gets so bad,you can't breathe outside - basically if the atmosphere becomes like Venus, lol. That said, new stadiums should just be either retractable-roof, or closed domes. It's the future. Players and fans want to be comfortable. Being a Giants fan,I don't want to spend 4 hours in the rain, snow,or cold, watching my shitty-ass team getting smacked around every week (look at Week 1 against the Cowboys last year), on top of paying hundreds to sit so far up I'm looking at the scoreboard most of the game. I just don't see the point of open-air stadiums in cold-weather cities
First of all, I’m a Yankee fan and to me, I don’t wanna see a retroactive roof in Yankee Stadium. Retroactive roof takes away the view of the Southeastern part where the projects and the courthouse. As for the Jets, St Louis is calling you
Instead of moving the fences in and creating dead zones why don’t they just move the infield forward towards the fences and add an extra rows of prime seating behind the plate and down the baselines?
The recent AZ vs Yankees series was an absolute clown show during the tropical storm. Puddles all over the warning tracks, kitty litter having to be applied to the infield after every inning, and CLEAR home runs and routine fly outs being influenced by high winds in hilarious ways. This game is so easily tainted by weather so i don't understand how any stadium built in the last 25 years wouldn't at least have something to prevent drizzle from hitting the field.
i wish they would have gone ahead with the original plan for Jets stadium instead of that horrible hudson yards. The Jets should have taken the Mets offer and taken the old Shea location
hindsight the city shouldve built the westside stadium for the jets, it was close to getting approved too. the mayor was on board but a lot of city counsel members were against it. its better then what they have there now with hudson yards. the rumor going around is that since nycfc is getting a stadium across the street from citi field, the jets are going to try and get into that stadium but its all just unlikely rumors.
Not just the city council but James Dolan and MSG was a huge roadblock. In the MSG lease it stated that no other stadium should be built on Manhattan and the Knicks and Rangers can never be the home team in a regular season/playoff game outside of MSG unless Dolan waves it under circumstances. That's why when the Rangers played the Isles at Citi field the Isles were the home team
ETFE is a newer material that makes translucent plastic domes or even "glass" panels possible... Almost all the newest of the new stadiums use it.. And because it's so lightweight yet strong it could make it a lot easier to retrofit stadiums with domes without adding structural weight or that much cost compared to the previous materials used... And with climate change making most places hotter I think adding domes just makes sense, especially if you think you are going to keep using your venue for decades to come...

I hate the new Yankee Stadium vs. The old... that was a cathedral
@@Knickerbocker_Ave yes it was! Unless people went to the old stadium they would never know.
Went to a Mets game back in 2016 or so. We saw all those garages and thought it was so odd.
Didn't a few of the NY mob families use that area as a body dumping ground? Might be an interesting time if they did it all up to redevelop it.😁
The Jets stadium in the west side of Manhattan would create a nightmare issue.
An open air football stadium in Buffalo is a total waste. An open air stadium in Buffalo would only be used 10-15 times a year.
@@americangiant1003 Football you can play in almost any weather which is why the fans opposed the roof. If it was MLB that would have needed a roof.
They don’t have the infrastructure?
Wouldn’t a Super Bowl bring huge revenue to the city etc ?
They have express busses on the way out right on the main road outside the stadium. They are supposed to leave 15-30 minutes after the game and head to major transportation centers in the region that have park and rides and connecting services. They police litterally blocked the exit for the buses for inexplicable reasons when I went for an hour after a sunday night football game. we get back to the closest transit center to the city of Niagara falls and had to uber back to the hotel. @@americangiant1003
I live in Syr. I have been in the dome a few times... now which is called JMA wireless dome, the dome is not the worst. The tiles are a little more see through than the photos show, but it is always cloudy in syr so that's probably why
You can tell he's not from nyc he don't know what he's talking about
Citi Field unveiled a new video board this season and it's the biggest video board in all of MLB right now.
And the park was quite nice also
It's a great video board at Citi Field. I got to see it for the first time this summer and it's the best in baseball right now.
That's the photo you chose for the interior of newish Yankee Stadium?
I'm guessing the roof from the Metrodome was too damaged from when the roof collapsed in, for Syracuse to use the translucent panels in theirs. That was the main reason why Minnesota built US Bank Stadium, and played at University of Minnesota's football stadium for a few seasons. There was just no reason to put a new "hefty bag" on the roof of the Metrodome.
The West Side site is a no go, as there are buildings there now. They could have considered the space near Citi Field but they are putting a soccer stadium there.
The west side stadium would’ve been cool then again Hudson yards will never exist
They are considering building an nfl stadium for the jets over there in queens
3:59 the USFL New Jersey Generals should have their games at MetLife Stadium with the New Jersey Giants
Syracuse is always cloudy
You missed the Hockey arena in Buffalo… worried about the Jets who don’t even play in NY.. but missed an entire NHL team and their arena and the one the Islanders play in too…
He also missed Michie Stadium where Army plays. They had a planned renovation that got temporarily cancelled because it was too costly.
Well to be honest the buffalo sabres have been forgettable for the last decade
@@dustinsindledecker154 So… the Sabres and Isles are both in the NHL.. both are long time Pro teams… still should mention.. clear though.. he’s focused on football, baseball and basketball…

“Putting their foot into the ground.” Homie making up expressions.
The Jets and Giants should be the NEW JERSEY Jets and Giants. 👌
Is the new BILLS stadium 🏟️ also located in Orchard Park, New York?
Yes
Crazy how all three teams play in the Suburbs
Another 35-40 years?!! Old Yankee Stadium, if you include the renovated version, lasted 85 years. This new one is not my favorite, but it's state of the art and has everything you need for, - you know - BASEBALL. It should last a long, long - long time. Same with Citi Field. (Hell, even Shea Stadium lasted 44 years and it was a TERRIBLE stadium.)
I never got to see Shea but many people seem to miss it.
Why did it have to go in the end ?
Both should move back to ny and nj should get a expansion team
Heineken Terrace at the UBS ARENA is a great hangout space
For the record, the islanders never shared the garden. To even put that into the universe is a travesty.
The interior of MSG was completely redone less than ten years ago. Completely different than the prior configuration
The Tennis Center is next door-- have them explain how their retractable roofs work... ;-)
The better known name for Highmark is the original name.. Rich Stadium… Later renamed to Ralph Wilson stadium (or just The Ralph)
A lot of people still call it Rich Stadium or the Ralph. People never seemed to get behind Highmark Stadium or New Era Field as the names.
Rich Stadium > The Ralph >>> Highmark Stadium.
Rich Stadium 🏟️ was named after Rich Products Corporation. 👌
I have never once heard someone want a roof on Yankee Stadium or Citi Field
Can you do a video on MSG? How it's divided as far as the main floor where the basketball games are played and where the theatre is inside there.
Do the Buffalo Sabres play on a pond somewhere or do they have their own arena?
The Islanders spend sometime not at MSG but at Barclays, and it was aweful. Place was not built for hockey at all.
What are you talking about? The ads blocking NYC? Huh? Manhattan is to the south, behind home plate.
You didn't talk about New York City FC's stadium situation.
The Rangers & Islanders play awesome outdoors at Yankee Stadium & Citi Field .
9:40 there isnt that much natural light in Syracuse in general. Sad to see the inflatable roof go.
They’ve been talking about a stadium just for the Jets since the 70’s. It’s not gonna happen.
First of all, I’m a Yankee fan and to me, I don’t wanna see a retroactive roof in Yankee Stadium. Retroactive roof takes away the view of the Southeastern part where the projects and the courthouse.
As for the Jets, St Louis is calling you
Highmark was originally named Rich Stadium.
MSG possibly getting a renovation? They recently underwent a billion dollar renovation.
Yankee stadium feels like an airport.. i really hate that place
MetLife feels like an airport
@@CoffinDaggers that place is dump!!
Bread and Circus stadiums....where the people go to be entertained which prevents them from thinking about things that really matter.
Instead of moving the fences in and creating dead zones why don’t they just move the infield forward towards the fences and add an extra rows of prime seating behind the plate and down the baselines?
The islanders shared an arena with brooklyn nets at Barclays
The recent AZ vs Yankees series was an absolute clown show during the tropical storm. Puddles all over the warning tracks, kitty litter having to be applied to the infield after every inning, and CLEAR home runs and routine fly outs being influenced by high winds in hilarious ways. This game is so easily tainted by weather so i don't understand how any stadium built in the last 25 years wouldn't at least have something to prevent drizzle from hitting the field.
800 million, The Mets could borrow that from Seinfeld
Rangers and Islanders never shared the Garden once lol. Where did you get that "fact" from?
It bothers me as a Bills fan that New Highmark is going to lose 10,000 seats.
Barclays has the steepest seats in the NBA and maybe professional sports
MetLife stadium hosted Super Bowl 48 which was a bad idea unless they expand transportation then I guess is fiesble to host again
i wish they would have gone ahead with the original plan for Jets stadium instead of that horrible hudson yards. The Jets should have taken the Mets offer and taken the old Shea location
The billboards are there at Yankee Stadium not to block the view of the city, but to block the view of all that public housing. 😂😂😂😂
Well, they DO muffle the sound of the Jerome Avenue elevated train that runs right next to the park🙂.
At least he didn’t say Jag-wires.
Nasty that Jets stadium is fulgy, looks like a futuristic fema prison.
What fan wants retractible roofs at Yankee stadium and Citi field? Baseball is meant to be outside. I understand in other cities but not New York
He wants to put a dome on everything. Stadiums are better without domes unless in extreme weather.
hindsight the city shouldve built the westside stadium for the jets, it was close to getting approved too. the mayor was on board but a lot of city counsel members were against it. its better then what they have there now with hudson yards. the rumor going around is that since nycfc is getting a stadium across the street from citi field, the jets are going to try and get into that stadium but its all just unlikely rumors.
I think the Jets will get a new building if they want to win at all. They can't just be tenants and get the income they need.
The Islanders never played in MSG They played at Nassau Coliseum and the Barclays center
The Miami Dolphins added a retractable roof
I believe Yankee Stadium and Citi Field will last way longer than 35-40 years since they will still be new
They obviously delayed one of the Yankees game yesterday and Sunday cause of the rain and all that stuff.
Any update on the Meadowlands Arena?
It's being used for the studio to tape TV shows in you going to look it up
