I figured Hector would would be the one who would realise what they were doing was wrong and thus go on and help the heroes, while Isaac would be the one note sociopath that would serve as Hector's personal villain. I love that the truth was far more complex

@@stomyn Understandable, since that's pretty much how it plays out in their game. Hector is the protagonist, who leaves Dracula's service for moral reasons. He settles down with a lady, Isaac gets the lady killed, and a revenge plot begins. The introduction of the two felt kinda targeted at making people who played that game feel like they knew what was happening, just so that they could do a character development powered rug pull. Worked out fairly well.

@@stomynI know the anime can be viewed without playing the games. But Hector and Isaac were the protagonist and Antagonist in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. I knew they were going to be great.
Also, Isaac looks so much better in the anime. His game's character model was.. yeesh.

If we're getting a video about Hector, I really, really hope we get a breakdown of his relationship with Lenore. Their dynamic is so interesting, because it's clear that while they do not truly "love" each other, and in fact betray each others' trust on a few occasions, there is something going on that marks them as caring about one another.

    • @AkaiAzul
      @AkaiAzul Год назад +26

      Their relationship is...complex.
Part of what makes Hector so easily manipulatable is his lack of ambition: he never thinks or acts in his own needs and wants, until Lenore finally introduces the concept to him. She kind of took Dracula's place as a mentor, helping him grow as a person. He yearns for some one to help guide him to grow because of his lack of ambition, so, in order to win him over, nurtures that desire he has.
But, she never saw him as an equal, and in her own words, she saw him as a pet. In a way, she pitied him and grew to adore him and his simplicity, but was ultimately a plaything for her. A master's love for their pet, or slave, may still be love and genuine, but it is not the same love we know and expect from one person to another.
Towards the end, Hector's still naive: he still wants to nurture and develop the side of her that cared about him, still thinking of others, but it's never anything she wants. Her purpose was to nurture her family, and with it destroyed, she felt as purposeless as that destruction and takes her own life. Hector's distraught, he didn't think this would happen, but begins a step in finding himself and his own ambitions.

I'll be curious about that video, because I'd love to see how she does the Lenore look, the cosplay would be great.
Also given how this video broke down Hector's desires to care for animals and pets, its a very interesting echo that he goes from being one who cared for pets to becoming one for her. That alone is going to be a field trip of psychology.

It did make him realize that he had been treating things in his life the same way and that perhaps you shouldn't treat people same way as you do a pet. Their relationship was far more equal once Lenore had her sisters off her back and they weren't expecting him to betray them.

It's sad to see how easily Hector gets manipulated throughout the whole show, people just see the compassion he has and they use him like an object they can just throw away when they're done with him. His relationship with Lenore is much more interesting though, there's a lot of clear manipulation going on there but at some point after Lenore realizes her sisters sidelined her, it's almost like they finally find some common ground and sympathy for one another, especially Lenore, who probably realizes for the first time what it's like to be played for an idiot and then forgotten.
And yes, Carmilla definitely deserves her own video. She's a cool villain, but she's also such a big karen and even though she could have probably achieved big things with Dracula gone, she tried to bite WAY more than she could chew. I guess that was one of the things that got her killed 💀

I don't think that Hector at this point in the story has the capacity to understand that he's betraying Dracula until it's already happening, and even if he does realize, he's justifying it by reminding himself (and being reminded by Carmilla) that Dracula lied to him. 13:00 When you are young and haven't had much luck with women being complimented by a beautiful woman can really slip past your emotional defenses.
Hector has been shunned by humanity and here comes the beautiful and ageless Carmilla showering him with praise no human woman would ever heap opon him. Hector knows he is out of his league but the idea of Carmilla being interested in him has overwhelmed his logic and common sense.
Had Hector more experience with women he would have asked himself why the vampire beauty was so interested in him. As a man ages he begins to always ask himself this question. But when you are a young man beauty can be used to manipulate and control you. Especially when you haven't had enough experience to know when it's taking place.
Carmilla most likely has been thrust into the same type of situation she is steering Hector towards and has blamed herself endlessly for being weak enough to fall for it. Even though it was wasn't her fault. She knows the right things to say and how to say them because they are the same things someone used to manipulate her so long ago.

The classic move is to know when someone is appealing and pressing on a specific aspect like an emotion, they want something. They don't want you nor do they want your affections. They merely want something you can provide. It bothers them when you call them out on it since they believe they are extremely crafty when they are merely very sloppy. Then again, I always expect someone who appeals to my emotions doesn't understand me at all. 99.5% of the time I am right. They never needed or wanted me. I am merely a tool they believe they can use.

There’s a stealth theme in Castlevania that I don’t see many people talk about: growing up. Isaac and Hector start out very childlike in opposite ways (a vengeful loner and a naive follower), and they both learn to emancipate themselves from these instincts to become better people-Isaac through his experiences with others, Hector through his own initiative after being degraded for his naïveté. Isaac even says to Hector at the end that “we have been children; we need to grow up.” Likewise, Alucard’s arc is also about growing up and emerging from the shadow of his parents to become the man they both would have wanted him to be. It’s easy to forget because he aged rapidly, but he is still mentally a child when we meet him.

Just finished watching the series and it's so well written! I found Hector particularly interesting. Here you have one of the bad guy's generals, traitor of his own kind, and so you expect him to be cold, vicious, cruel, evil in some way. And then, he's not. He's literally a very hurt and lonely boy who just wants to be left alone with his unusual pets and goes along with the plan hoping it causes the least harm. I honestly think that if he ever saw what was truly going on, how people were being killed in awful ways, he'd be horrified. His journey is one of having to lose his childish naiveté and innocence and finally learn to stand on his own, because that's part of growing up. I guess it is, both in their world and ours. In contrast, Isaac's journey is about caring and protecting humanity, not just against vampires, but hopefully against the evil Men do too. Ultimately, about building a place where there'd be no need to outgrow innocence, but that's a dream for another time.

I’m thrilled to see how you touch on Camilla, her backstory and her attitudes. I loved how you emphasised how strong a character like Lenore is and how bravado and postulating reveal insecurities in ourself. Camilla will be a powerful follow up to that because despite shown strength, she is a well of insecurity manifested as rage.

I agree about Hector and Issac having family issues. I think Hector also veiws Dracula as a father figure. He never had parents. Dracula was able to play at his lack of a father, but Carmilla played better at his lack of a father.

I don't believe that Hector intended to hurt Dracula, but I do believe that he willfully carried out actions he knew went against Dracula's wishes.
I think that Hector genuinely believed that his actions were beneficial, and that his acting against Dracula was justified because of it. He thought he was doing good things, helping Dracula, helping people. He betrayed him, but he never had any intent for that betrayal to cause harm. A sort of "for your own good" type of thing

An amazing costume, a cute dog, and a great analysis? An amazing trifecta in a video!
As to judging things by actions, its amazing what being able to relate to the motivations can do. Imagine seeing almost any action or suspense movie, but without the full POV that we get from following the protagonist. John Wick, Taken, and more all follow huge collateral damage and body counts, but it is ok because we feel for our hero and care about their goals more than those that they are working through.

Isaac, Dracula, and Carmilla ultimately understood Hector completely. A lost little child. While Isaac saw that because it was also true for him, both Dracula and Carmilla saw the naivety coupled with his childish mindset and used it to manipulate him.

So it looks like you haven't done anything on Mads Mikkelsen's Lectar only Hopkins. I personally think Mads lectar is magnitudes more interesting and closer to the books and kind of a modern irl dracula character. Feeds on humans, all knowing, manipulative, love and celebrated for great feats, and to some degree torn by his love for a human that just might get to truely see him.

For me, I didn't expect the twist in the series when it came to Carmilla manipulating him. In the games, Hector made the choice over time and decided to fight back. Yet, Dracula turned his own innocent devils against him and he almost got killed. He's lucky that he's got Julia as support in his game, Curse of Darkness. As for the bullying, most of it comes also with his odd appearance. He sticks out compared to the rest of the crowd. Again, I'm sad/upset that Hector got manipulated and hurt at every turn. It really hits hard in the gut. As for the idea to do Carmilla, go on right ahead. I'm EXTREMELY interested to see what you have for her. She's not well touched in lore when it comes to the games.

    • @boangherrazvan3977

I come to realize that Carmilla is not really manipulative she is venomous and vindictive but not manipulative .
She is not smart in anything she does .
She appears in the court she insults his wife in front of everybody (Everybody expected her to die there even the generals but the plot demands that she survives ) .
She convivences Hector to help and tells him immediately that he is implicated (Nothing is stopping him to make 10 steps back to the room and tell Dracula everything as nothing even happened yet, and Hector trust that Dracula would protect him , he even says that in later seasons.)
Ans stupide moves keep piling up over the next 3 seasons the only reason she survives this longs its because of the plot

I love these videos; so sorry in advance for the long list of peanut gallery commentary that's about to ensue. 😂
This is the "I slept through my psych class in HS and still got an A, clep tested the college course years later, passed, and still proceeded to put myself through toxic ex after toxic ex just because I didn't have the mental energy to go out and look for anything better." Commentary so take it as you will. 😂😂
5:20 this. Not a lot of people seem to realize this. It's the whole "martial arts vs. having a gun" thing. There's a rather distinct difference between feeling someone's neck snap and popping them with a rifle from down range. Whether you see the results of your actions has it's a different impact even if its the same outcome.
5:45 off that last one this reminds the milgram study. They press the button and press the button, not realizing initially the consequences of their actions, until they're faced with the realization and morale dilemma of it all.
7:35 This is (imo) why stoic is over-rated. Being volatile in your expressions and avoiding a pattern makes it easier to counter more manipulative people.... the ones you keep at arms reach anyways. If everytime someone asks you a question you scrunch your face up and puff your cheeks out and go "hmmmmmm that's such a great question gee I wonder what stupid answer I could give to such a stupid question." (For a snarky example.) It makes reading you a nightmare for most people. It becomes annoying and grating and stoic is definitely hotter BUT overly exaggerated expressions help mask your inner monologue. (Even if it's not appropriate for this specific character. We need more Deadpool and less batman)
9:26 men, if she's out of your league it's a trap.
11:55 "she's not bad; she's just drawn that way."
13:00 we all have (had) that one coworker no one liked and everyone came together to make fun of before going back to hating each other for the remainder of the shift.
14:30 despite contrary belief; the hype about hot step mothers is not all it's cracked up to be.
16:33 commonly referred to in the dating world as a "glass shattering" moment.
"When you wear rose tinted glasses all the red flags just look like flags."

its funny i've always felt that opposite about intent and action. That what you do matters so much more than what you mean to do. And along that same line i dislike hector immensely. (at least as much as anyone can immensely dislike a well written fictional character.) Hector wants revenge on humanity. He just lies to himself about it and its that denial that makes him so easy to manipulate.

Hector... was born with the short end of the stick, was used because of it, and then Carmilla ended up taking the stick away from him with her manipulations. I'd say that Lenore kinda-sorta tried to give him that stick back, but by then it was already too late. I won't say he's the victim in all of Dracula's camp but he's as close as I can find to one. As to the intent of betrayal, I think he was unconsciously manifesting it because that is what he was surrounded by.

They did my boy Hector so dirty in this show…only because Warren Ellis hated how Theo James could make his voice sound heroic so he just tortured the dude, and had fun doing it, more than likely because he knew Hector was one of Adi’s favorite characters, next to Alucard. Not only that but:
-They changed him from the strongest Forgemaster to the Weakest.
-They changed his background and implied that he was the one that killed his parents in a fire.
-He was tortured simply because Ellis enjoyed torturing him, as said by Ellis himself.
They did my boy dirty just because Ellis wanted to be petty and wanted to get back at Adi after their falling out (and more than likely Iga because in 2007, Iga made Ellis do 8 rewrites because he felt like Ellis was going out of his way to completely disrespect the franchise).
