Something I find interesting later on in Season 3 with Issac and the boat captain when talking about why Dracula saved Issac when he was so dedicated to wiping out humanity, and Isaac says Dracula was simply "confused", when in reality that was probably one of the few moments of pure lucidity Dracula had in his final moments. Dracula already thought he new Isaac was his only real friend, but he never really realized how much Issac meant to him until he was about to die for him.

    • @AuspexAO
      @AuspexAO Год назад +18

I love that moment too. Isaac is 100% lying to himself because admitting that Dracula saved him out of love and friendship would mean his current path of revenge is on shaky ground. After the talk with the Captain, Isaac stops trying to lie to himself and starts listening to the people he meets. The talk with the Captain is such a crucial pivot point to his character that it literally changes his life.

As Dracula and Isaac's stories progress, I think that your perception of a father/son relationship is perfectly apt; Isaac may actually be the sort of person that Dracula could consider as an heir to the legacy of his knowledge. Not to wage a war upon the remnants of humanity, but to create a repository of the best, brightest lights of humanity... and for Isaac to curate that collection and perhaps one day, find a worthy protege/friend to whom the legacy may be bequeathed in turn.
In the wake of each of their broken hearts, the two fill their vessels for love with the bitter, but still filling, draught of supreme respect for one another.

Isaac has been such an inspirational character for me. Black characters, especially in animated media, are oftentimes depicted with very specific character tropes. (The cool kid, the musical talent, the athlete, the nerd, the best friend, etc.) These tropes aren’t bad, but I feel like people tend to stick to a certain sets of ideas when they could be creating something a lot more memorable. Isaac hits a similar sweet spot that Mel from Arcane does, at least for me personally. (A lot of people had trouble figuring Mel out for some reason though lol.)
Regardless, Isaac was the mot entertaining character to me. His conversations and actions throughout the series were always interesting and I find myself rewatching clips of them every so often. I especially appreciate that Isaac was written to be both intelligent and threatening. Weird comparison, but I feel like Isaac reminds of how I’d personify a tiger. Meticulous, Disciplined, Capable, and Intelligent. Not to be trifled with. Some people are gonna be weird and take offense to this for no reason but, as a writer working on it myself, I really hope to see more Black characters written like Isaac.
P.s, As a small aside, I also really like how Isaac speaks. When you listen to his cadence, it becomes very clear how deliberate Isaac is in conversation. I think that plays a role in why he feels so intelligent/capable.

Isaac is also very interesting as later on in his conversations with the Captain, Isaac expresses that he sees his Forgemaster work as holy- that one day "Hell will be empty and its doors will rattle in the wind." So in bringing souls out of hell to fight and die either in his service or in the service of those he respects, Isaac is bringing that sacred future closer with each night creature he makes.

As part of his growth Isaac realizes the night creatures don't have to be weapons, or even simply tools (I can use a hammer to build a home or crack a skull), but something more, as while their torment in hell was 'eternal' does that mean their time returned to earth even in their monstrous forms should also be eternal suffering? Because what kind of monster (the fly-eyed night creature he's having an actual conversation with)- a mere 'weapon' would eat a grape and remember the first times it enjoyed them in their mortal life?

To be honest, i love that everyone he seems to gravitate towards is an elder world-weary person who offers key knowledge one usually only gains from personal life experience. Watching the show I felt the most emotional connection to Issac because of his Loyalty because I can understand it. I guess that’s because that’s something I value above a lot of things. I feel a duty to do right by the people who have done right by me. I try to do right by everyone, but for my family (close friends included as family because family is who you make it) it’s just different.
Loyalty is why I prefer dogs over any other animals. I enjoy all the other traits like the goofiness, the playing, the loving nature, and everything else. But the dogs I’ve had were always loyal to me even during the harder times. Just a thought, my wife asked me once why I would want a dog over a cat, and that is what I answered. She said that I must put a high value on loyalty if that’s what I look for in an animal.

Isaac is a world-weary person. He passionately believes in love and loyalty, and he desperately wants to believe others do as well. He has continuously been let down, often hard. Isaac is a monster by nutrition, he got the hell beat out of him because everyone tried to use him. His calculated personality is what I first noticed and what confused me about his development. Making an army to protect yourself, I get it. Completing the mission Dracula initially set out to do, sure thing. Killing off Carmilla, because she has her own goals, with the bonus of ending the person who played a major role in killing his only friend, absolutely makes sense to me. The part that confused me was his journey to find Hector. In Isacc's words, 'Hector is a little boy who wants pets.' Yes, he betrayed Dracula but he never had lofty ambitions like taking his place or anything like that. Hector was immature and easy to manipulate. If anything it would make sense if Isaac left Hector to his suffering. But, the fact that Isaac first sought Hector with the intent to kill him. Someone needs to explain that to me.

Spoilers for the whole show below
To me, that was Isaac's inner child lashing out. He was lost without Dracula. He wanted to carry on Dracula's goal not just because he hated humans but because it gave him direction. We kind of see this with the Philosopher, who was murdered for questioning religion. He had a purpose, but it led him to ruin and infernal servitude until Isaac teaches him another way to live because of all that he learned from the other Forgemaster and The Captain. Hector was a catalyst for taking one of the best things he had away from him: someone he considered more valuable than himself who also shared in his pain. Someone else who would return his affection. But by the end of his journey, he found that sense of self. He realized that "Dracula did not run things well." That pain in Dracula that he related with was holding him back from a better life, one worth living. Hector had to die at first because of that, but as he grew, he considered a bigger picture: what he could do to make the world worth living in.

Isaac as a character and his story arc is such a rarity, he’s created in away that is so thoughtful and intriguing as character, while also taking part in some of the most thought provoking and insightful conversations, AND FOR HALF THE SHOW HES NOT EVEN A MAIN CHARACTER 🤯. Starting of as a secondary antagonist who only exists to serve the main antagonist he really doesn’t seem to have any sense of self, he and most beings around him see him as merely a tool. Then when Dracula saves him instead of letting him sacrifice himself (showing how much he’d truly come to care and value him as a person 🥺😢), to him then going on a journey of self discovery and growing into this very impactful individual with such a fleshed out story. His arc is truly epic to behold.

It is telling that Dracula is so much more caring to his two human disciples than any of his vampire kin - both of them felt great love for something before the world took that love and used it to destroy them, and both of them are left believing in nothing and desperate for a cause to throw themselves into. Dracula is in the same state after losing Lisa, and is as close to kind as he can be to these two, comforting. He even performs belief in his mission of genocide around them, where he barely bothers around the vampires. He desperately wants to be loved again and to be regain a sense of purpose, and giving these things to his two disciples seems in part his way of feeling this by proxy.

I’m glad you spoke on “spare the rod, spoil the child”, which is based on Proverbs 13:24.
That scripture was understood by people at the time to mean discipline/parent your child the way a shepherd used his rod or crook, by gently GENTLY pressing it against the body of the sheep to prevent them from straying away from the safety of the flock and towards potential danger. Also the rod was used by the shepherd to protect the sheep against predators that would seek to harm the flock. Shepherds were known as tender towards their flock which also is another reason that biblically men who were great leaders chosen by the God of the Bible, Yahweh or Jehovah (in English), were often spoken of as shepherds or were literal shepherds FIRST to learn tenderness and mercy before leading humans. Main examples are King David and Moses, the later being taught humility by being a shepherd for 40 years before leading the Hebrews and their mixed company out of Egypt and of course Jesus referred to himself as a shepherd in John 10:11.
It’s a shame that “spare the rod spoil the child” has been twisted to justify child abuse but hopefully I could offer some clarity in support of your points. Great video.

Georgia...your face looks like mine when I paint. Living in a part of Canada that actually has cold weather, building up extreme cold endurance can be painful, but ultimately helpful. I've toughened my knuckles as a martial artist, which can also be painful, but helpful. Getting into shape can be painful. Building muscle tears down before it builds up. Cardio can make you feel like you're dying before helping you not to. = ) Whipping oneself only invites infections. Philosophically...loving your enemies means more than loving your friends...because its harder. But its the only way to ever turn an enemy into friend. But with most enemies that is too often not even remotely possible.

It's cool to see the analyses of these fictional characters. A video about Life is strange, the characters and the relationship between Max and Chloe would be so interesting to watch. Especially since many people consider not only Chloe, but Max as well to be bad people.Cobra kai and the mentality surrounding it (strike first, strike hard, no mercy) and how it affects the children is another interesting topic. Hope you get to cover all of them eventually. In the meantime, great content as always!

I'm not an anime watcher but I love Isaac so much. I can relate and understand him so much and his love for the creatures he makes and how he cares for them and speaks to them I just find it really beautiful. I always loved the weird gross and scary creatures and always loved the idea of necromancy in a way that could end up not being as torturous. I think I also love him because I hate romance or sex in media and I really like how Isaac's story lacks of that

I'm very late but I've always taken "spare the rod, spoil the child" as meaning the Shepard's rod. Not giving guidance, leadership and boundaries will create a spoilt child.

Personally I related to Isaac more than anything else. A black and white view of the world. But in a strange way his view wasn't so black and white. He acknowledges that he's selfish and he's only human. He believed that if people were going to do what they wanted. He should be allowed to do the same. He hated the fact that he didn't have order/control in his life. Causing him to seek stability. Something, anything to give his life meaning. Dracula did that for him. But what I noticed the most and it's why I related so much to him. It was his willingness to learn and add importance on to everything. Whether it was a demon, a vampire or a poor old man. Isaac seemed to learn from these people whether or not they hated him. This is extremely similar to how I live my life today.

I am glad that you brought to light the father -son relationship between Dracula and Isaac. Children will spend much of their lives trying to obtain their fathers approval. Dracula was the first to acknowledge the value of Isaacs existence, causing a beautiful, loyal relationship. This happens a lot in crime families, cults and even abusive relationships but on the flipside can spawn lifelong relationships that are stronger than blood.
We don't get to choose our biological parents, but we can choose our mentors. Isaac saw the good in Dracula and vice versa. Issac is not malevolent. He will kill because he has to not because he wants to. He doesn't seem to hate the person but resents the actions. Even when he hurts himself it is like someone saying sorry over and over again for a crime, they witnessed but did not commit. They do this to avoid being that kind of person who commits crimes freely.
Isaac lives a very puritanical life, avoiding hedonism at all costs. He is a symbol of hope because no matter how ugly the world is he doesn't give up and keeps on living. Dracula was a very good mentor despite his faults. Isaac saw the beauty in Dracula and in return, not only was his life spared physically; but his spirit and will to go on.
