Lucy gave him purpose. he was lost in night city where he lost one of the people he really loved, despite him being a rebellious brat, she worked hard for his future and he took it for granted. through all that, David loved his mother. after her death and David was just Bumming around like a lost puppy, Lucy gave him a life where he fit in. in the end, David only wanted Lucy to fulfill her dreams, yet his dreams was for Lucy to have hers. David saw Lucy had ambition and was as similar as he was. they both werent fitting in night city at all and certainly not as stuffy corpos in arasaka. Rebecca however had a hint of her liking him before Pilar died but that was just it. she was too new in the cast to have a decent backstory so they had her as the muscle, eventually she became Pilar in David's crew, the old heads of the crew died to make way for the new blood but Rebecca was just a heavy. she didnt really give David any semblance of ambition. she cared for David as it was obvious to everyone: David was going over the edge like Maine.

Honestly, Both of these characters are the kinds of people that are wonderful people. Lucy is deep, thoughtful, and she's the kind of person that being close to means so much. Rebecca is a true blue companion. She's brash, open, and always a straight shooter with how she feels. But lets be clear. They were both loyal to the bitter end. Rebecca just unfortunately rode it to HER end. She was willing to do what David wanted to do even if she personally didn't like it, didn't agree with it. She stayed at his side no matter how much she hated watching David destroy himself. Lucy wanted to protect David, even if it meant she had to be away from him, and she tries so hard to help David and he just never listens. In their own way, they were both truly ride or die. Davids whole crew (except for Kiwi) was honestly. most of the people he worked with were so tight that they were willing to go ahead with even his stupidest plans and worst ideas because they were true blue friends and they trusted him unconditionally. It cost so much, but if i had to have a crew standing at my back, kick the backstabber to the curb and give me the rest of Davids crew. I'd know they would always be there for me. David was lucky to have the friends he did.

Lucy doesn't express herself and has deep insecurities, leafing her to do things independently that she really shouldn't. Getting her to tell you things or involve you in her life would be a daily struggle, and we see first hand how that ultimately implodes for her.
Rebecca is pure id and always set to 11. That works out great when she's a merc in a dystopia hellhole but in daily life it'd be actively self-destructive. It would be infuriating trying to keep her from turning every situation into a potential disaster. Someone like her survives off sheer luck, and we see that run out by the end.

With Lucy she has a very hard exterior, she makes it really hard to earn her trust because of what she has been through in the past but with people like this they're normally some of the most loving and caring people who have been abused for being too nice, if you can earn their trust you'll find a partner for life. I'm very much like Lucy, I give off this persona that "I don't care, I don't need anyone I'll do it myself" but all I ever wanted was someone to care for me.

@@hayseshouhda5730 I don't think you watched the right show mate, or you gotta rewatch it. Lucy was the one asking him to cut back on chrome because she knew what it would do to him, and she saw how he kept living for the dreams of the people he had lost, rather than living for himself and the people in his life that are still alive. David asked Lucy if she wanted to get back in the bizz, and she declined. Reason she declined was because it was clear to her how the only reason David was still in the bizz was because the dreams of his fallen friends and family was the thing that kept pushing him, kept him chroming up, kept him focused on a future with no bright ending. She knew if she went back in bizz with him, then there'd be nothing holding him back from destroying himself fully. That's why Lucy stuck to the shadows because she knew she couldn't convince him straight up, so she wanted to do everything in her power to keep him safe from within the cybernet. Whereas Rebecca might have been with David in a lot of firefights, Lucy was spending every waking hour trying to get him truly out of the mess he was digging himself into. She devoted herself fully to protecting David in the hopes that he'd realize he had more to live for than the dreams of the dead. Sadly, he never came to that realization until it was too late.
If Rebecca truly wanted to save David, she would not have gone with him on these missions, she would have invested herself in his motivations and told him to his face that he's doing the wrong thing - and she'd not stick with him when it was clear his path only led to one place: his own death. Rebecca didn't ever truly oppose David and question the integrity of his motives or how his actions affect those around him. To me that's not hard loyalty, it's neglect.

Whereas Lucy is concerned for David and expresses that concern by taking action on his behalf without his knowledge or consent out of a belief that she's doing it for his own good (and that by extension she is qualified to judge what is best for him without any say from him). I think the simplest explanation is the best one - Rebecca was honest, loyal, and considerate; Lucy was pretty much the polar opposite. In the end, Lucy's unwillingness to confide in her team was the reason they were all killed. She had a martyr complex and didn't really consider how playing the hero would actually put her loved ones in immense danger, she was pretty damaged and she didn't seek to change it or get help, she let it destroy her, almost willfully falling into the pit of despair. They actually wrote David really well, because he was a troubled kid with a chip on his shoulder, and Lucy's mystique appealed to that side of him, it made perfect sense that he would pine after her despite Rebecca more or less throwing herself at him. For all intents and purposes, Rebecca was the better partner for him, but we don't control who we love, and David was completely smitten.
I'd be willing to bet that more emotionally immature (and thereby typically younger) fans of the show would be more likely to go for Lucy, while those with more life experience would see the immediate red flags and be a little more guarded, likely more receptive to Rebecca.

Lucy because I understand trauma myself and how hard it is to connect with people. Most people assume I'm always calm but that isn't true. Ptsd either makes me angry at everything or want to isolate and that coupled with anxiety makes it hard to be able to open up to new people. (Thankfully I have a loving wife❤) Lucy did go rescue D' when he was kidnapped by that B.D. film editor. She killed those people who wanted him dead but did something without him knowing.
She did try to stop him from getting chromed up when she saw the first symptoms of his cyberpsychosis. Rebecca couldn't say no to him (enabling) but she did go rescue Lucy because she cared for him. Rebecca has a big heart but someone who's a manipulator could try to abuse that type of love and loyalty that Rebecca had.
Lucy challenged him because she cared. Lucy and David were both damaged (D' seeing his mom killed, losing Maine and friends) so communication was hard for both partners. I mean, both girls are a good catch provided you don't abuse Rebecca's love and have the patience for Lucy to earn your trust. Honestly I probably relate more to V' in Cyberpunk2077 character wise.

Rebecca is open, fun, and loyal. Lucy is guarded, serious, and one of the things she did that had a major impression on people was that she kept David distracted while Maine and the crew were on their way to come rip the Sandi right out of David's back if they had to. I think if it wasn't for that early betrayal a lot of the fanbase would like her more. I mean, obviously David started falling for her when she was laughing maniacally while they zipped the wrong way down the highway on a hospital gurney. Now, I get that few people are going to be as loyal as the guarded person that has opened up to you, but that early betrayal is just such a big hit, and that she continues to be guarded (regardless of it being to protect David) just makes it harder for people to really warm up to her. Meanwhile, Rebecca has the kind of personality that is really easy to get to know and like, the problem is the loyalty of a person like her usually comes with the baggage of being a magnet for problems (ironically, when push comes to shove, Rebecca is shockingly practical).
Also, strange side note. Rebecca playing with her guns, ejecting and reloading rounds to show off after a job? Reminds me a lot of how her brother Pilar would balance trays of drinks and other feats of dexterity with his cyber hands to show off after a job. Also, the way Pilar hung on Lucy at times, not too dissimilar to the way Rebecca was hung up on David. Like many siblings, as different as they were, they were also remarkably similar. (I've heard people familiar with my family remark how similar my two brothers and I are to each other, despite how we are also very different.)

I felt Rebecca was a better match for David due to her resilience, candor and more forceful personality. She would have likely been more effective at checking David and countering his slide into psychosis, sort of like Dorio was for Maine and as we clearly saw in the series, she is less destroyed by the loss of someone close to her.
Lucy was a soul already damaged, already bearing cracks of being hurt and left and abandoned. David talked the talk about staying, about not dying and then did the very opposite, doing his level best to push deeper and deeper into his own destruction. I think he heart was in the right place, he wanted to protect her but she did not want to lose him in that exchange. His drive to be 'somebody special' eclipsed everything and every one else... his mother, his friends and most damaging of all, Lucy. They all suffered deeply for his need to shine.
I find myself torn between the two concepts, someone like Rebecca would pull me outside of my self, push me to be more, to burn brighter while someone like Lucy I would coil myself around, protect and stay with until the world burned around us... a turn inward or a turn outward, either sounds lovely.

Not crazy in "We have so much fun; she's so crazy" but "try to stab you in the face with a vegetable peeler" (true story) crazy.
And she's also very honest, upfront, and loyal. She's will stick her neck out for you and is willing to risk her life for the people she cares about.

For a lot of people, "fixing" others is not their thing. It's not about "I don't want to help this person", but more like "I am not qualified to help this person" or "I dunno how to deal with this".
Someone with a ton of PTSD can give someone else PTSD from just sharing their experiences. It's wild, but happens. And many don't want that kind of negativity in their lives, so they will try to get away or not put themselves in those kinds of situations. Hence why people don't like surrounding themselves with people like Lucy, but preferably people like Rebecca. They don't want to just abandon them, but don't want to be burdened either.
This is also a big reason why many people with PTSD are afraid to open up: They don't want to burden anyone else. But finding a person who can take it AND help... Difficult. Yeah, that's why we have therapy.

It felt like Lucy spent half the season moping while hiding from everyone. And then she decided to go in without backup, even though she knew they wouldn't have asked questions if she asked them not to. In a relationship, she would have become controlling and paranoid due to her own insecurities and David would be doing all the work in it. It would be nothing short of stressful in something that's not supposed to be, and David would have pushed himself too far eventually with no other way to release that stress, because that's the kind of person he is.
Rebecca on the other hand you can trust to have your back when it counts. She's a fellow street rat that will walk through hell and flip off the devil for the team. In a relationship, she pulls her own weight and puts in as much (or more) effort as you do to make it work. She's the one trying to convince David to go light on the chrome multiple times because she saw what it was doing to him, again as opposed to Lucy who didn't notice anything despite sleeping right next to him.
    So yeah, Rebecca > Lucy.

He has that young energy instinct to take care of her because the problems radiate off of her, and he imprints because he's young so once she shows any affection he's caught.
If he had been older, he would have gone for Rebecca. The family thing, serious commitment showing, and going to be a friend and not distinctly in the girlfriend role with how down to earth she is can be intimidating. That's all you want when you get older though.

@@Cybertech134 what I take issue with is the idea that Rebecca is the only right choice for anyone, and especially that Rebecca is the "mature" choice.
Rebecca clearly appeals more to a lot of people, and that's fine. However, it's wrong to think Lucy is merely toxic or otherwise socially stunted with no redeeming qualities. Lucy is much more subdued, but she clearly cares deeply for David and shows affection, albeit less overtly.
The world these characters live in is rife with danger and unstable social dynamics. Kiwi's and Faraday's betrayals are not exactly nice, but they fit well within this world. Lucy is more aware of the fragility of their lives than most, and she tries to subtly remind David of that.
Something that stuck out to me is that David doesn't really have anything in common with Rebecca intellectually. what will they talk about, beyond superficially checking in on each other and work related topics?
David's chemistry with Lucy is readily apparent throughout. they're on the same wavelength intellectually in a way David just isn't with Rebecca.
Furthermore, it was clear from early on that Lucy was genuine in her affection and interest in David. They're fairly similar. David himself is fairly avoidant in his displays of affection as well, albeit much easier to read than Lucy. David is clearly shaped by a less than stellar childhood. He understands Lucy's nature well, and he gets along well with it, and vice versa. Despite their inferred traumatic backgrounds they have a healthy relationship dynamic, given the circumstances. they don't exactly have the safest of professions in the safest of environments. even so, their relationship works.
Slightly unrelated, but David's descent into his self destructive behaviour after the Maine incident was quite the piece of character assassination in my view. with all the people around David, especially Lucy, and his experiences, one would think he would have the opposite reaction to further augmentation than he actually did.

We don't open up because we're afraid of letting people close and being vulnerable. We just don't want to get hurt again. We still hope for the right person to come along and chip away and the shell we put ourselves in while staying cautious. It can honestly be exhausting because we want to be closer to people but our fears prevent us from letting it happen and we always feel like we push people away when that's the opposite of what we want.

Lucy and I are very similar, I have been betrayed multiple times, even by family so I know what it's like. She was betrayed once, I also had people I cared for die infront of me (two grandparents, one grandmother) but when I had a friend die and I heard about his death, I broke down very hard. I cant even look at thanksgiving without thinking about my friend. So I can empathize with Lucy, and I feel like how introverted and guarded we are that we would be understanding on how we both operate. Rebecca is cool, but I would perfer her as a friend.

@@kingmakaii Yeah its a stretch. She still did it though where Rebecca definitely wouldn't have. I just wanted to point out the polarization between their behaviors. Where Rebecca charged in for her friends and her brother, ready for death if it came -- Lucy hesitated and was convinced to abandon David whether for better or worse. Rebecca is reciprocative. David would NOT have abandoned Lucy even if Falco told him to. Heck, he charged in after Maine despite Lucy telling him not to.
There are so many parallels that show many of the characters willing to die for one another. And then there's Lucy.... Who sat back both as she sold David out. Who sat back again as Maine and Dorio died. And who sat back a final time at the finale. It's a reoccurring theme with her.

I pick Lucy (didn't see the poll) but I can understand how people relate more to the more straight-forward Rebecca. I'm a sort of quiet, pensive person deep down (despite being a social comedian) so I like Lucy but also Rebecca never sold David out to Mane's crew lol. It's also clear Rebecca likes David right off the bat and Lucy has to come around to admitting to herself how she feels about David (and letting a person in to her life with the dangerous quest she's on) so I can see people liking that too.

Lucy revealed herself to be a trash person when she sold David out and called up criminals to literally murder him. She is no better than those other people that tried to kill David and take his implant just because they were in a position to do so.
Rebecca on the other hand... Always supportive and even died fighting alongside him.
I feel like if David had chosen Rebecca instead of Lucy, he might've survived in the end. Rebecca was more attentive and supportive while Lucy was entirely self centered and only consumed with her own baggage and problems. I think Rebecca could've prevented David from overdoing it with the implants and going psycho.

Lucy was and still is my pick of the two. She is very relatable, and I always empathize significantly with this archetype. The mystery, the frustration of initial interactions, annoyance but alluring desire to inquire further, the realization that there is more to them, the slow melting of the outer layers, and then the reveal of who they always have been but were too afraid to show. It's easy to love someone who puts themselves out there. It's harder to love someone who is afraid to be loved. It feels much more meaningful and satisfying to see these relationships happen. I liked your analysis of this. Loved this video.

I feel like people picking rebecca over lucy also has to do with the current relationships dynamic that I see.
    especially in dating.
as a guy myself and having asked most of my (male) friends, one thing becomes very clear.
most of them are done with bullshit. bullshit being "uncertainty" or the typical "chase". (just to make it clear, I am talking from a man's perspective, since I am one and I have talked to my guy friends)
the guys who are single and ask girls out will asks once, the girl says no, they will never talk to that girl ever again or if it seems just too much effort to even manage to be on good "friendly" terms like it is almost the case between lucy and david at the start of the show.
Lucy imo would fall into that archetype, I mean, she literally kinda puts off David for the first few episodes before finally opening up. all of my friends would have immediately dropped pursuing her, because she seems cold and distant. at least they would have stopped looking at her as a potential mate for life.
Rebecca on the other hand makes it very clear that she is actually interest in him, but even so, she still is capable of just being the good loyal friend that you need.
and all of my friends would have picked her over Lucy.
So to some extend I could imagine that this "no bullshit" or "not wasting my time" attitude towards dating and relationships (from the men's side, at least) that developed over the last 10 to 20 years led to at least many men picking the more extroverted, fun, loving, loyal, direct and open person, than the seemingly shy, cold and distant one
