    Cash flow is your company's oxygen; it keeps you in the game.
    1. Build A Portfolio?
    First, they don't want to take the risk on you who has nothing to show for. You are going to need a portfolio or demo reel. Don't have one? Start filming projects as soon as possible. Shoot fake commercials, do free gigs until you have a portfolio that you can show clients.
    2. Start with Family and Friends
    They are going to be the first people that hire you. Start with them and see if they can lead you to the next client. They will always have connections.
    3. Free work, Spec work, Reduced-Rate
    This is the risky part of the first 100 days but it may be the thing to get a project started. It shows off your capabilities and pads your resume.
    **Disclaimer: Doing FREE work can devalue your services.**
    Do the free projects or cheap projects for as little time as possible.
    Tip: Raise your prices gradually and consistently
    4. Start Building a Network
    Reach out to local businesses, and start building relationships. It will always lead to good things.

    My Life Story (sort of)- bit.ly/jpa_mylife
    I can remember picking up my family's video camera as a teenager and being enthralled that I could make an impact in someone's life. The filmmaking process is complex but at the heart of it simple: tell a compelling story.
    What resonates the hardest is visual storytelling. The ability to create an emotion or convey an idea through an image is what drives my career as a filmmaker. My marathon mentality is focused on becoming the best cinematographer possible.

    I totally agree with you. That's what's killing Dallas freelance music videos and commercials industry. All these new generation DSLR videographers charging $500 for music videos and cooperate gigs which makes it very difficult to compete. Especial when you have office building and employees to pay. That's why I completely got out of the music video and freelance indie commercials business. I'm strictly indie feature films cinematography and post production now. So I agree with you 100%

      I don't know how they're doing music videos for $500 that are any good. The sheer amount of time it takes to make a good video makes that price not economically viable. If someone objected to reasonable pricing, I'd tell them they'll get what they pay for.

    • @Eddie2Bristow
      @Eddie2Bristow 7 лет назад +8

      When it comes to cost, it reflects on quality. A lot of people are getting DSLRS now and learning the stuff we learned over time and charging reduced rates. What I learned is this: "Sell Walmart product, attract walmart customers." Once you're seen as Wal-Mart, you're gonna get crap customers that complain and ask for so much. Price connects to quality and trust me, those people don't usually last long cause once their clients are looking to go big budget, they're not gonna go to Wal-Mart. They're gonna go to Ralph Lauren . You want to be that and not compete in Wal-Mart's sandbox because if you do, you will lose.
      If a client says to me "I can just hire this kid to do it for $500.", I tell them I understand their dilemma, but as a professional, this is the cost for quality and professionalism outside of just the video. On time calls, responsibility, ease of billing, ect. This is what makes a pro. If they say no, I wish them luck and if they want some great content in the future to give me a call. I'm not Wal-Mart.
      Trust me, they will respect you for that and usually what happens is they'll use your stuff to show the cheap guy to "make it like this", they either say yes and screw up, raise the price or say no because they went cheap to undercut you, their clients want bigger projects, they can't pivot fast enough and to do it like I can requires more money and the gear to do it. Now their rushing around trying to Google their way out of a situation just cause they wanted some quick cash. I've seen this happen before. They may run a camera, but don't run a company. Legality issues, copyright, ownership. Stuff the cheap film guys just don't learn.
      Do what you can for family and friends and I think location has a lot to do with it, but don't be afraid to let the client go.

    • @Valleyfilms
      @Valleyfilms  7 лет назад +1

      These are great points, Eddie. All of this is absolutely true if you ask me.

    • @pallanfilms6591
      @pallanfilms6591 4 года назад

      I agree and disagree. Usual the people who charge $500 for music video etc are the people who can't crack into the bigger budget clients. If they charge $1000+ then they will just not get clients. Also usually the ones who pay the $500 range are the ones who can't afford bigger budget productions. If there is a real quality difference between your work and the DSLR videographers then they shouldn't effect your client base as they will want the better quality. But if there not a big difference between the two that's when you run in to loosing clients

    Great video - really enjoyed it :)
    I never really thought much about it influences the local economy - I do think that's the reality of business though.
    But I guess it's also about respecting the profession - charging a low amount to secure business but then being demotivated to the point you make a low-quality wedding video for example which to the customer, is one of the best days of their life - gives videographers a bad name!
    Great video :)

    Awesome, thanks Jordan! I just started freelancing in video production and social media management and the way I started was just by randomly emailing race directors for various endurance events in my area asking if they needed help. Once I got the first "yes" in my inbox, I offered a competitive price to film, produce and edit a promo video for their event. Figuring out pricing can be very difficult though. Like I said, I only started recently (April 2017) and am completely self taught. RUclips is filled with incredible individuals like yourself offering knowledge and insight to an industry that can be complicated and intimidating!
    I am happy with how much progress I've had with similar steps you talk about in your video. Have you made a video on how to deal with the annoyances of building a video production company? For instance - branding, website, business cards, etc? I've been back and forth with peers and friends about just using my name when doing work, but others swear by not using your personal name/accounts in business. What are your thoughts on this?
    I'd also love your input on my work so far on my Vimeo channel - like I said - very self taught and my gear setup right now is: Canon EOS 60D, 50mm prime lens, 70-300mm, 18-150m, DJI Osmo 4k gimbal, manfrotto action sport hybrid tripod, GoPro Hero 5 Black, Hero 3+ Silver, GoPro mounts, MacBook Pro - I love shooting endurance race events and so trying to keep a kit that is running friendly (love running on course and capturing footage). I'd love to get in the drone world too but nervous about how $$ they can be and also getting FAA certified. Argh so much to talk about! Anyway, sorry to ramble but if you could check out my Vimeo it'd be appreciated! Thanks again for making videos like these - really appreciated.

      Hey Lauren, that is awesome to hear! I'm happy for you!
      I actually love the branding, website part of my business. Much like the videos you make, your brand is centered around a story. Tell the world the story of Lauren. What is your style? What is your creative process? Represent those aspects in your colors, fonts, website layout, and how you overall conduct business. Easier said than done, but only you have the real answer to what Lauren C. looks like as a business. As far as personal name vs. business name, that's a gut choice on your part. I started as Valley Films and then converted to Jordan P. Anderson. Honestly, the name doesn't really matter. What matters is the quality of your work and how you are helping our clients?
      Drone: I would recommend getting one and putting in the time to get certified. It will pay off down the road. Think long term.

    Surprisingly, the system of production business seems identical everywhere even in my country (Thailand).
    I have been making videos for 2-3 years as an employee and freelancer and just decided to start a production company, kinda lost and don't know where to start so I search for a guide on RUclips (in Thai language) and found nothing. Then I tried it in English and found your video!
    The fact when new filmmaker or photographer come in and drop the price is really effect the whole business but we just have to keep holding our standard (both price and quality) and time will show why we worth the price. Most customers I've worked with would love to pay less but they would not trust the "too cheap" production, they expect to pay more because they can be sure that things are serious.
    Thank you so much, this video really helps me wrap up my thoughts.
    This whole comment is just to say thank you : D

      In video production, there are 3 factors: Quality, Speed, and Cost. (GIF: missingcloud.com/gif/GoodCheapFast_MissingCloud_.gif)

    I got one of my first paid clients by making a social-issue documentary film on my own that involved a nonprofit. A PR firm doing pro-bono work for the nonprofit promoted my film because it featured some of their client’s work in a positive light, although I had complete control over the film. After seeing my film, the PR firm ended up hiring me to make videos for some of their for-profit clients, including Fortune 500 companies that I never could have landed as clients myself as a 19 year old. I mention this because I feel that nonprofits are a great avenue for getting paid work without feeling like you’re being exploited by working for free and can lead to clients with a lot more money than a cash-strapped local business or a couple getting married. At least personally, I’m also a lot more passionate when doing work for people that are trying to change the world for the better.

    I like your insight! I created a video production company about 8 months ago. I can definately relate to everything you talk about in these videos. I am currently struggling to pick up more clients. Presently we have one corporate client that we have been working with at a reduced rate due to trying to prove ourselves. in fact we price cut a project for a major medical company by about 75% just to prove ourselves and get future contracts. Having done that once, I will never do it again cause it has become an immense about of work for little return. I definately feel your struggles.

Obviously video is powerful, and I make valuable content, but if the client's not down and only goes for a freebie, why waist my time? Help the guy who has better vision for his companu and values video. (If you value something, you'll pay for it.) Discount to build, yes. I NEVER go free.

    First off this video was extremely helpful, Thank You! Secondly you may have mentioned this but as far as creating content to show clients would you recommend just doing demo commercials/working for free with a company to build your name/company or could a demo be your personal work and not necessarily work for other clients? To clarify I’m working on building a RUclips show and if it is super professional could I use that as a demo to the client and then as I move along creating more content build my portfolio with actual client work?

    • @Valleyfilms
      @Valleyfilms  5 лет назад

      There's no rule saying that demo reels have to contain footage from paid client work. Spec work, camera tests, VFX experiments, fake commercials are all totally acceptable. The ONLY rule is that it has to be your work or a project that you directly worked on. Don't take credit for other people's work.
      As you sell more projects, you'll have more projects under your belt. Therefore, you can add those projects into your reel as the years go by.
      Quick tip for Demo Reels: Make a reel containing projects you'd like to work on. If you want to produce more RUclips shows for clients, then 100% put your personal RUclips show in your reel. Show off the work you want to do more of.

    Hi, thank you so much for the knowledge. I'm not too technical on computers, but I am looking to go back to school, my question is, what are the softwares videographers need to know other than premiere pro and final cut?

      +Khayam So this one was the family wedding, my first wedding- ruclips.net/video/Z2J7CZ0VpZY/видео.html. Just the highlights video, digital only. This was the family discount but I wasn't hurting financially from it.
      This was my 2nd and 1st legit wedding- ruclips.net/video/EkkcuFwAMqU/видео.html. This was just the highlights, digital, and 5x DVDs. For that I charged

  • @RobisLive

    how much would you say a novice should charge for a local music video without a budget shot in day time with no added lighting or crew just a 1 man production and editing team .

    • @Valleyfilms

      Pick a number. I'm serious. Ask for $200, $1000, $2500.
      What are you okay with? What is the client okay with? That's the number.

    • @Valleyfilms
      @Valleyfilms  7 лет назад +2

      Tough love coming; I mean well. Productivity is an internal struggle with yourself. A nice desk and nameplate won't change how you get your work done. The "professional image" is something that I now believe to be a self-imposed myth. A workaround for client meetings is to meet them at a coffee shop or better yet, their own office where they feel at ease.
      If you can make the case that having an office will make you more money then it's something truly for consideration. Thank you for the comment, let's keep this going. I love it.

    would you suggest being a 1099 independent contractor or should i get my business license? I just started doing promo video work for small businesses and was just wondering....

    • @Valleyfilms
      @Valleyfilms  6 лет назад

      An oversimplified answer would be to start a company and hire yourself out to other companies. Have your clients pay your company, and then have your company pay you. Adds a bit of separation in terms of liabilities but makes taxes a little more complicated.
      How big are you wanting to grow? If you're just doing small gigs and this isn't your main income, then I would keep things simple and go with the 1099 route.

    • @schaper1986
      @schaper1986 6 лет назад

      I expect to make 10-20k on the side per year. This isn't my main source of income, mainly a side job. Considering that, you think independent contractor? Is there anything I should be aware of? Like being careful of using google images in the video and/or royalty free music being used in the videos.

    • @Valleyfilms
      @Valleyfilms  6 лет назад

      At that projected income, I would consider an LLC. Educate yourself on how to start an LLC and how to structure it.

    • @JodyBruchon
      @JodyBruchon 5 лет назад +1

      If you have a business license, you still get a 1099. Business licenses are what let you do business in an area; they have nothing to do with your taxes. All non-employment work is 1099 work.

    • @Valleyfilms
      @Valleyfilms  4 года назад +1

      Hey Shantanu, I'll add it to the list.
      If I can quickly help here in this comment thread:
      Lenses - 24-70mm, 70-200m, 18-35mm or an all-purpose lens where you aren't having to swap all the time. Primes are beautiful, but you might miss the shot if you have to switch lenses.
      Support - Monopod, Tripod, maybe a slider, maybe a gimbal. I prefer handheld but it's great to get some stable shots to establish the scene.
      Mindset/Mentality - Don't get too spastic , slowdown, frame up your shot, record 8 solid seconds of footage. Your editor will thank you. Get a variety of shots. Wide, medium, close-up, weird angles. Get your safe shots and then experiment with crazy shots. If you have nothing but crazy shots, then your editor can't lay down a solid storyline.
      Quick tips - Sometimes when filming a crowd or people in action, it helps to stay on a subject and wait for sometime interesting to happen. Two people may be talking, but then they laugh for a half-second and go back to talking. If you wait, watch, and hold steady you can capture a brief moment like that.
