And you can’t say Parkwood wasn’t doing their job because Chloe was on every show performing her butt off and y’all still didn’t buy the music. A record isn’t going to keep putting money in an artist project if you’re not buying the music. Same with Normani; Motivation did not perform well on the charts consistently, neither did Wild Side with Cardi B. So I don’t understand why Beyonce is getting the blame for Chloe’s lack of success when Chloe’s own fans aren’t buying her music.

And I do agree that fans haven’t been investing or buying Chloe’s music & mind you R&B music for example hasnt been selling as well as other genre’s as of recently. So it has been a hard market to break out into and build this sustainable fan base in the 2020s. I realized that branding through nostalgia can be both beneficial and damaging to newer artists because the identity that one chooses to have is overshadowed due to the attachment of their predecessors. Granted, I think comparisons can be interesting, but they are very incongruent and sometimes slightly dangerous for an artist’s career. I will never forget Normani’s interview with Zane Lowe where she broke down in tears because of the immense pressure to match the high expectations that fans wanted from her.
For newer artists, I always root for them because they’re persistently navigating to find themselves, especially early in their careers. That time is always the most crucial, and the general public tends to know where to place in them.

Girl, there are plenty of other artists (even some more successful than Sabrina) that have branded themselves around campy, tongue-in-cheek, glamour girl. Nothing about Sabrina is genuinely original/never been done before. Even just talking about other 4'11" pop stars, Kylie Minogue comes to mind as someone who has heavily influenced Sabrina - particularly the 2000 light years era. Like go watch Kylie Minogue's "please stay" (beginning to end), and tell me that's not aesthetically the same exact thing Sabrina is currently going for - just 25 years older. The plot for the please please please video also feels narratively the exact same as the "some kind of bliss" music video.

I think ppl need to talk about how they respond when it comes to artists, when a new artist is inspired by an older one& you can easily tell, more people are likely to engage with it (whether it be good or bad). But when an artist does something more original, it’s crickets most of the time. If an artist sees that people are responding to a specific thing, theyre gonna want to keep doing that or stuff similar so they can keep that engagement. But then you get those same people coming at them because theyre not doing anything “original” now.

Would Britney be the same without Janet (her actual musical mother) or Beyonce without Donna Summer and Mariah, or even Madonna without Cher or Debbie Harry? I'm so happy you talked about this because there's so many layers. Personally, I don't mind a comparison or a reference if it's approached with respect and maturity. These days, stans want to use the whole "mother" and "daughters/sons" as a way to humble new artists and take away from their sucess. You have half of a fandom trying to claim an artist in a "mini-me" type of way (which I think can be limiting and stifling) and the other half is threatend and reduce newer artists to carbon copies.
That's why we always see discussions like "they don't make stars like they use to" or "music used to be actually interesting" etc. To me it's just nostalgia and stans not wanting their fave to be replaced.
For example, Sabrina sonically and lyrically has developed her own style. Her sound is pop country-ish, retro and her writing displays her sexulity and sense of humour in a way that neither Taylor OR Ariana do. So to reduce her to a mini-me or carbon copy just disregards her artistry.
Normani similarly was named the "Next Beyonce" before she even dropped an album. Fans saw a rising artist who could sing and dance and felt they had to either claim her as their fave's daughter or reduce her to an imitator. The funny part when her album did drop, the visuals(?) nor the music, gave Beyonce (apart from little secrets which was an obvious reference). Normani does show respect to artists that came before her but I think people confuse her giving legends their flowers as trying to copy their formula.
Theres way more examples of fans running with the mother accusations like Chappel and Lady Gaga, Olivia and Taylor/Avril, Chloe and Beyonce, Tyla and Rihanna even Shawn Mendes and Ed Sheeran lmao. As a kpop fan I see it even worse sometimes because achievements are hyperfixated on and everyone is accused of copying someone.
At the end of the day we need to give artists the space to explore themselves and develop. That also means being less defensive with our faves. A big reason why newer artists find it hard to break through is because fans reject them before they can prove themselves because of nostalgia and wanting to keep their faves in the forefront.
Anyways, sorry for the long comment but I just wanted to add my two cents.

The convos are relevant because of consumerism and capitalism.
    Pop = popular culture
    Hip hop = new movement
Both when mixed to capitalism means that “if you are not making the machine money, look young, do what the machine wants, we move the momentum machine to replace you.” This gives an extra motive for the labels to continue to be conservative in their artist selection (with little risk because they are just recreating sht that’s already worked).

Sadly the new young ladies do not want to put in 2/10 of the effort she put in. The Barbz only go hard for Nicki because she worked hard to create authentic and new sounding music year, after year. Cami you did it again! It’s inevitable that when a new artist arrives on the scene, and to be compared to someone already established. It has a lot to do with frames of references and where to categorize them. When Mariah came out she was instantly compared to Whitney to the point they both had to clear up those comparisons in interviews, but as Mariah grew and EVOLVED into her own, those comparisons paled into oblivion! I think that’s where a lot of these artists of today go wrong. Absolutely nothing wrong with citing your influences and who you’re inspired by, but if you wear those influences too long you then become “a wannabe, a cheap knock-off, or a carbon copy of that artist”. For instance the comparisons between Chris and MJ, I think a lot of ppl over exaggerate it to an extent 👀, yes he’s talented, but the magic, ambition, vision, drive, Michael exuded is inimitable ✨⭐️✨ We need originality again!

New jeans were also called Sister of BTS By MHJ but only because they debuted in same company.

i think that the tyla and rihanna comparison is very accurate in just the place that tyla holds in the industry as it’s a place rihanna once held but sonically are NOTHING alike😭 but i do think that sabrina is definitely ariana’s daughter 🤌

I don’t think Tate McRae is the new Britney but I do believe she’s the first “Tate McRae”. Comparison is inevitable but I think it’s always important to let an artist define themselves with time and let them cook for a bit.

I agree, and I do think Tate is uber talented foresure. I do think however that she’ll probably wanna be super intentional moving forward on drawing less brit comparison in her music vids and fashion choices just so she can carve out her lane early on while she has a lot of eyes on her

I just finished the video (had to pause because of work) and i totally agree that people take the musical children thing to seriously versus taking it light and subjective because it does erase these newer artists careers and accomplishments regardless if they pull from others for inspiration and when they do try to pay homage or create a new moment fans, stans and the GP WILL ALWAYS COMPARE THEM TO ARTIST OF YESTERYEAR NO MATTER WHAT! It’s a shame too because these girls and some guys are really talented and just need a chance.

When it comes to Britney Spears, the reason why I think people used to call her the "New Age Madonna" is because her level of fame was so huge in the 2000s that it was even compared to how huge Madonna was back in the 80s, not to mention that there wasn't a young female artist that was doing Pop music at the time, R&B and Alternative Rock was all the rage, and the boyband and girlgroup craze was at its peak back in the 90s so when Britney debuted with ...Baby One More Time, she brought back Pop music in a big way (hence why Britney Spears is deservedly known as The Princess of Pop) but other than that, when it comes to her music, stage presence, dancing skills and techniques, Britney Spears was always influenced by Janet Jackson, which is something that even Britney herself has admitted several times.

You’re right on the money. Anytime I see anyone in this video that was mentioned I kind of just right them off as a cringey tribute act and don’t even bother listening to their music. It’s like why listen to great value music when the real thing is right there. (With the exception of ChloexHalle and tyla.) I don’t get the Sabrina and Ariana comparisons. But I also only heard the girl sing on Christina aguileras 20th anniversary of what a girl wants and she has a country twang in her voice. Idk if it’s natural or not but it’s not very Ariana to me.
Side note: the editing in this video is s-tier.

When I first saw Sabrina Carpenter it was in the nonsense music video. I thought it was cute but kinda bland pop. But the more I’ve seen of her, the more I’ve been impressed. I’m sure she’s someone’s “daughter” but for the most part she’s been very refreshing and I enjoy her as a pop artist who does not try to survive in the industry based on nostalgia.
Where Olivia Rodrigo is concerned, I like Guts a lot more than Sour because she distances herself from the “Taylor Swift” sound. Guts feels more like her and who she is as an artist. Can’t wait for the third album.

okay , so here’s a list of all the main pop girls that we grew up with.
    main :
    beyoncé
    rihanna
    nicki minaj
    lady gaga
    adele
    taylor swift
    katy perry
    alternative :
    lorde
    lana del rey
    from show to music :
    ariana grande
    demi lovato
    selena gomez
    miley cyrus
and honestly , i don’t think there’s been a single one that has came close to either of them ( well maybe doja cat ). especially i feel like at the least , nobody has ever came close to an adele , and probably never will.
