Hey everyone! Hope you enjoy today's video. I've been dying to discuss the Celebrity Brand Boom in the recent years and it felt like the perfect time to discuss. What do you think of all the celeb brands? Which ones seem most authentic and which ones do you use?
I think fenty is the most authentic. She saw a gap in the market and filled it. They have great quality products to. All other brands to me feel like cash grabs
I miss the days when artist were just artists, but since being an artist doesn't bring in any real money, these artist have to delve into business ventures that don't even make sense with their brand.
Exactly, and that's why I can't even fault them for it forreal because the industry should be paying these folks what they're worth but instead they're basically giving them loans that they gotta pay back
@@CamrynSuzanne however ive genuinley enjoyed a few celeb perfumes. Actually i knew Sabrina Carpenter first for her perfume before her music the same with bilie eilish. I knew they were singers but had no clue about their music. I liked their perfume first.
An example of a good balance between music and business is Nicki's Pink Friday nails and numerous brand deals with designer brands. Nicki's revenue obviously comes from music but it's not too much to have a business that sells and markets her brand of avant-garde to her consumers that's affordable. The success of Rihanna, Nicki & Selena different from Beyonce, and Fenty beauty impacted the beauty industry, and Nicki's pink Friday nails and sneakers are affordable. Both sell a plausible image, unlike Beyonce. But Beyonce turned it around with products that are more in her lane of luxury.
@@CamrynSuzanneplus Wicked, more specifically, Glinda, was something that she wanted to do since she was 10(heck Ariana said on a podcast that her original dream was to be a Broadway performer who released pop albums from time to time lol 😂). The fact that a lot of Arianators(and some Wicked stans) are pissed off about this is ironically humorous lol 😂
I think people forget that some of these women, while they might truly love making music, go through phases of life where they find new interests that they prioritize, just like everyone else. Rihanna for example seems fully involved in Fenty, and if that’s where she’s feeling the most driven and inspired right now (in addition to being a mom), I don’t think she owes anyone new music until she’s ready for it. Just my thoughts.
This is such a great point! I think music fans often get possessive and very attached to how you were introduced to somebody. And we have to remember that we’re not entitled to what they choose to do. Like you said they have interest just like all of us and I think if they create a brand that provides value, I don’t see a problem with it at all.
@@CamrynSuzanne But how come these new interests never seem to depart from beauty and skincare lines primarily marketed towards millennial and Gen Z women who coincidentally make up the core demographics of these artists? I believe interests should be unique for it to come across as fully authentic. It's really reminiscent of the 2000s/2010s era when every female A-Lister had a perfume line a la Paris Hilton style.
@@yourfairygodmummy core audience might feel drawn towards these celebrities exactly because they share interests (makeup is something many people are passionate about). And if you want to go for a business venture, you gotta make sure that it has chances to succeed. Why would a celebrity that is known for their face and beauty and flawless skin or outfits yadda yadda go for idk furniture? It wouldn't sell as much. So I believe every entrepreneur combines personal interests with smart moves and logic. Same reason why certain brand deals go for certain celebrities (I remember headphone ads in music videos were really popular back then, and it makes total sense, since they are >music< artists)
In the past, artists were taken advantage of and many died poor and penniless so I’ll never begrudge artists embracing entrepreneurship or leveraging their fame (which is temporary) so they have an asset and a comfortable exit strategy. They’re thinking much smarter than artists from past generations who got played.
Absolutely, there are definitely issues with sometimes how they execute but considering the circumstances, it's much smarter for them to own something or have ownership in something sustainable
There are many people in the music industry and film industry who hustle celebrities out of their money. They make millions, and only get less than 10% of that at the end of the day. It's understandable to venture into smth that you're more in control of
Around 2010, maybe even before that Rihanna did an interview and said that she’d like to have her own make up/beauty/fashion business because she didn’t want to ever have to rely on touring as she got older ☕️ Riri has clearly been plotting for years to escape music industry control & she actually did it! And that’s why there’s a bunch of her music peers that have followed her lead into the beauty space hoping for similar success ☕️
Now we all know the careers of Women in the Entertainment industry, especially Music, is fleeting for most so I completely support these women branching out and starting brands.
Yes, that's a huge aspect of this convo that people don't want to truly acknowledge. For women especially, the industry will chew you up and spit you out when they feel like it. So, some of these celebs are trying to secure something more stable
I don't understand people being upset with Ariana acting in Wicked when she used to be an actor. I get that she became an household name as a singer but it made a ton of sense to me that she would be in Wicked considering her history with acting. Also, I really liked your break down of why these stars might need to make brands for themselves. I've never really thought of it that way but it makes so much sense! I generally don't care if a celeb makes a brand because 9 times out of ten, I'm not buying it anyway lol but it does bring a nuanced layer to the discussion which is appreciated.
I think the people who are genuinely mad with Ariana acting our people who became fans yesterday😭 she always saying, but she always acted as a kid too. And victorious is what shot her into the spotlight and it was mainly for acting so I also get confused as to why people are so upset about it. Especially when this is a huge role, if she does it well it can only do great things for her career from here. And yeah, I wanted to add some perspective as to why some of these celebs are doing this so frequently! I think most of us jump to the perception that they’re all greedy and rich and don’t need the money but clearly some of these artists are not getting paid as well as we think they are once they’re finished paying their teams, and agents. Seems like a lot of conversations go back to artist being underpaid, even when they meet the highest threshold.
I completely understand why artists and actors are becoming CEOs. I'll never forgot the 1 single lesson I remember from my media class years ago: The shows you watch, the music or radio stations you listen to, the sports you watch - it is all just "the commercials for THE commercials". THE commercials is where the real money is.
It all makes sense certain celebrities are do things ESPECIALLY with the economy we are living in, like i remember Sydney Sweeney saying that something about her financial situation hints why she’s started her own production company and is in so many endorsements, campaigns and commercials.
@@CamrynSuzanne tbf Sweeney isn't the most trustworthy person, she's been caught multiple times lying about her past. She lied about workig as a tour guide at WB studios, was deceptive about her education. She went on and talked about how much she loves restoring old cars, posted about regularly just to get a brand deal from ford and then stopped posting about. Also in an interview she talked about she has to work a lot to make a living and that she doesn't even have enough money to take 6 months off, she got some backlash for this and then 2 weeks later she bought $3m house.
The economy is fine. These celebs aren’t “struggling” for the same reason Walmart workers might be. Music doesn’t pay like it once did. And tv and movie contracts don’t give the artists. the same cuts and pay outs that they used to.
@@jellytwins1018 I read that she was brought up in a fairly well off family as well, which is why she was even able to pursue acting in the first place
@@Garcelle1987 Lol, she also talked about how she managed to be her high school valedictorian while also working at the same time. It turns out the school she went to was one of those elite celebrity schools where they accomodate for working actors and she only had like 4 classmates. She also most likely lied about her college experience where apparently her professor didn't let her take her exam cause she wasn't able to attent classes due to work and she also said that the other students complained, the likely-hood of this happeneing is extremly low.
I can SOMETIMES get behind the price if the quality is great but I usually am skeptical and wait till it's been out for a while. Also, you can often find products of a similar quality for a fraction of the price
@CamrynSuzanne I can see where you coming from but it's hard to find a good product where I'm like here my wallet and I'm here for the product that was worth it
Including Taraji was such a great choice as she really put into perspective about how the pay works. It was crazy when she explained how little she actually made! It really balanced this video by showing us both sides of the coin. I'd still have thought that these mega rich stars were just trying to get more money, but seeing how little they actually hot after everyone took their share was eye opening!
Yes! I really wanted to include her because she’s been an integral part of that conversation. Especially when we talk about the Hollywood pay disparity between men and women as well as black women and Latina women as well. I’m not saying that all these celebrities fall into this boat but some of them work their butts off and don’t receive the return so it makes sense why they pursue other endeavors
THANK YOU! Like Elizabeth Taylor wasn’t selling perfume or Gloria VANDERBILT wasn’t selling jeans 😂 but Beyoncé decides to have businesses and suddenly everyone is anti capitalist 😭😂
fk - for decades. For people old enough to remember, actresses and models DOVE onto the fitness video train in the 70s and 80s .. Jane Fonda, Cindy Crawford, Cher, Heather Locklear, Susanne Somers, Victoria Principal. Literally everybody and their mother in Hollywood had a personal fitness brand through videos/tv. That fitness market became their bread and butter
(The sweet spot then was that, unlike the years, money, energy, effort, knowledge and skill it took for Research and Development to create a physical product just to give most of your profit away to the actual company making the product while you are just the face, it was so easy in that era to simply set up a camera and do some jumping jacks, squats and lunges and sell that today and make loads of money. They simply parlayed the years they spent building and establishing their careers in Hollywood as actresses and as fashion models, becoming popular people who others wanted to be like and made fitness their personal product. Those women in that decade made multi multimillions from fitness in that fitness boom era, even as their acting careers faded. It often was their most profitable career.)
I feel like Beyoncé has accomplished soo much in her career that she has set a new bar for her self and that's to become a billionaire through a successful business venture no matter how much it doesn't even make sense!
I remember when Zendaya's clothing line "Daya" first started. same with "Tsnmi Co." by Kehlani. They had a brief moment with their first few launches, but then the faces of the brands slowly stepped away until the businesses closed. 2015 was a big year for health/beauty/makeup social media content. Influencers (instead of celebrities) became the new ambassadors for existing brands. Then after Rihanna launched "Fenty Beauty" it was a cultural shift. Not only did it become the standard for foundation shade ranges today, she launched before the celebrity vendor market (regardless of product category) was oversaturated. Nowadays, there's another celebrity brand at every corner.. "Jhenetics" (Jhene Aiko), "Know Beauty" (Vanessa Hudgens and Madison Beer), "Tresluce Beauty" (Becky G), "Bero" (Tom Holland), "MARI" (Marsai Martin), "Sun Goddess" (Mary J. Blige), "Viarae" (Issa Rae), "SKN" (Lori Harvey)..... I can respect the hustle but this is overwhelming.
That's bc Fenty had an "it" factor, something that set it apart from the rest, which was inclusivity. Shade range, then size range, and even the models for the brand. It was very openly inclusive and the first time many people felt seen by these two markets, but especially the makeup one. Others were forced to step up their game. I'd say another brand that had this in mind was Rare Beauty. Selena's brand is inclusive, but in a different way, targetting people who have mobility issues, and it worked. That's what most of the other celebrities don't really think about and what makes it feel pointless. They're just "another brand", they don't have a rarget audience aside from fans, they don't have "it" factors that make them special in the eyes of the public aside fron just a famous face plastered on commercials and labels.
@@bugsbunni4200 yess I saw thatt👀 i may need to rewatch but she did an excellent deep dive really focusing on the capitalism aspect and how detrimental it can be in the name of celebs
@@khemikims4058 Taylor is focused on music. Rihanna is now focused on Fenty. They get criticized for their capitalistic practices within that. But, they stick to their lanes. Beyonce is pivoting to a new market the same time she went on this once in a generational tour. It can be overwhelming to a fan.
@khemikims4058 it's different though. Beyonce has tried everything and has ventured into so many things. Whereas Taylor only has her music, and Rihanna has her makeup and clothing/lingerie line. Beyonces, for some reason does not stick.
I think the reason why Beyoncé is so heavily judged is because she’s been big since a kid and makes very good music (B4L). And with her lack of PR, she’s viewed as a “big figure with big money” so they think she doesn’t need the money. And I also think that people believe that she just trying to get out of Jay-Z’s shadow/bank account
Hayley Williams hair dye company makes so much sense and it's been a thing for sooo long over 8 years now so it's not like she jumped on a trend, she's the real deal
What I love about Beyoncé is that with her recent business ventures. Especially her Liquor You can tell Beyoncé really cares about products. I don’t really understand why people think she’s just doing this for money. Of course she does this for money but I also think she’s doing this with passion as well.
I was actually going to say that I had heard good things about the whiskey and the hair products . One thing i haven’t heard is bey’s products being low quality. I just think the frequency is highlighted mostly
@ very true like you said she is a very private celebrity which I ain’t mad at her for that LOL. I think people want to see her more involved like Rihanna is with her beautiful projects. You should definitely start your own Makeup line or something I would definitely buy it for me mom too you seem like you would do extremely well in that field you seem so knowledgeable about the business world
i think a lot of people also dont realize these celebs need to hire ppl to work for their business, they pay their team, they have to pay bills too, they may seem to have a lot of money but with inflation and prices getting so damn high, these people need to make ends meet
This exactly! A lot of us from the outside have this perception that when you make it, that money problems, miraculously go away, and you have money to pay everything. But Taraji said it well . “ big bills come with what we do.” They have to have a team to function in both jobs so it’s not as black-and-white as saying they’re all doing this for no reason
One thing that I think a lot of people are missing from this conversation is that these mainstream artists are a product within themselves (as terrible as it may sound). Even when people like Rihanna or Beyoncé are selling stuff that’s not their music, they are still selling themselves and boosting their personal brand, which is why you see them in so many of the advertisements. To think that these people are ONLY selling products to people (mind you, no one HAS to buy them) is simply obtuse. If it was solely about the on the surface product at hand, no one would care that Beyoncé has come out with so many brands at this point. Does Beyoncé NEED a fashion line, hair care line, perfume line, AND liquor line? Absolutely not. But those products are not the only thing being sold. She is also part of the product in these brands. I personally think a deeper discussion of capitalism would benefit this video a lot!
I think the approach products are less stressful and something they have more control over than acting/music. Instead of being the face of a brand, owning it is better. They found the value in themselves in other ways that's less chaotic physically like tour life.
I feel you. It's a whole other level of ownership and control, especially when compared to being a performer in the industry. Creatives unfortunately don't have control over much of anything so it can present a level of security as well.
i screamed (/hj) when i saw you posted so soon! you're one of my favorite creators on this platform and i've really come to anticipate every new post. keep doing your thing it's amazing!!!
Thank you soo much! This enthusiasm means so much because sometimes when I post, I'm insecure if people will like the topic or video. So this is super encouraging! Thank you❤️
Artists are creatives in all mediums; music, business, movies, etc. It’s not surprising that they just want to find a new way of expressing. So when actors turn to singing or vice versa Idk why the world acts surprised when they’re artists at heart
Don't forget people outside of artists, influencers launch so many products that r just downright scams designed to make money off their (often young child) fanbases based simply off their name and it really is sad cuz these ppl (again, often children) end up falling for it
This is very true and I think could be a whole topic within itself sadly. People making courses, And other scamming products really sucks like you said, because a lot of their fan bases are younger children who don’t know any better
Is she even marketable outside of her music? That’s a topic that might be an interesting topic for someone with knowledge about marketing & branding to unpack
Ofc Taylor's music is studied in universities but i am surprised that her branding and business management are not studied (correct me if there are any). She is a mastermind (pun intended) in business and marketing
@@Garcelle1987 from what I've seen, when ever she gets papp'd the clothes and jewlery always sellout (when they are affordable). So I do think she is marketable.
I love my Fenty Skin and Fenty makeup I swear by it so if her skipping music is gonna keep my skin beautiful then I dont need R9 😂. And that cecred hydrating shampoo is good so Beyonce please don’t let this brand fall by the wayside
Musicians have branched out to other avenues like cosmetics or clothing brands because they know music cannot be their only source of income. Some artists can pull it off (Rihanna and maybe Beyonce) but others.. eh..
This part & we dive into the transparency of this point that I think people seem to be skipping over or choosing not accept that reality. You're right though, some artists do it better than others
I used to work in the music industry years ago. The industry has changed quite a bit. Most artists today are not making money from album sales and a lot of these rappers are struggling to chart right now. Only dedicated fans want to attend these high priced concerts, and unfortunately sometimes these artists put on a lacklustre show. So some of these fans are choosing to go to festivals such as Coachella or Rolling loud, where they can see several rappers/singers for a cheaper price. So of course some of these artists are choosing to make money outside of the music industry. It's funny how Rihanna and Asap Rocky are criticised for focusing on other things instead of music but they make a lot more money outside of music. Asap Rocky got on the forbes list for fashion, not music.
People are also going to feel some way because gen-alpha, gen-z and millennials want to become career influencers/vloggers/podcasters. Celebrities are a big machine, and many feel they are making it even harder for a regular person to social climb.
I wonder if Taylor Swifts label is pressuring her to make more money. I know she’s doing the Taylor version so she can own her masters but ever since she decided to drop a deluxe edition of TTPD only in the UK the week Charli was expected to go number one, I just wonder is there some kind of pressure to make more money from the label. Even tho she’s not really doing brand deals, she just seems really chart/money hungry lately
I don't think she's eactly money hungry cause wouldn't the smart thing be to just start a business, cause there's only soo much money she could make from music these days. I think she's mainly just after the accolades and achievements/awards. Apparently she's also set to direct a film soon.
i think with ariana and selena they're making the "businesses" themselves and their image if you understand me. like both of them are still making music and acting in acclaimed movies and are basically everywhere now, and even tho that's still selling a "brand" it's still feels organic to them more than randomly dropping a liquor bottle with their names on it
I see what you're saying, they haven't fully stepped away from their crafts and I don't honestly think someone like Ariana plans to. I think fans sometimes get antsy when time is spent else where for a while. But like I said, no fans are entitled to what they choose to do with their career
Camryn, two things I love about your videos are 1.) how much I can visually see just how much work you put into your editing. It really is fantastic. And 2.) how well you articulate what I’m thinking
as someone who wants to make music but is also getting a degree in business management and finance. i think music and business creation is one in the same when you sign a deal to be a music artist that’s a business right there it’s the business of making your art so it’s not surprising that some would move to actually owning a business they not only want to own something for themselves and not have someone over them to tell them what to do but also it’s to also leave a piece of themselves not only in music but outside of it where they can show more of themselves but also show there creativity. Now i will say it’s getting out of control because not everyone NEEDS A BRAND OUTSIDE OF THERE OWN BRAND! J-lo for example DOES NOT NEED A BRAND! j-lo outside of being j-lo does not hit and doesn’t gravitate towards audiences . Beyoncé could also be someone who doesn’t need a brand outside of who she is as Beyoncé but with her putting in the behind the scenes work with some of her brand it has worked and sold for her so she is someone who can make and sell a brand but she has also had some falls but so has Kim K so it’s truly a tricky area in todays world
Thanks for your perspective! when you look at it that way, absolutely. Music is a business and you are the brand, the selling point, what people come out to see. I agree with you, it can offer more control to these artists outside of their craft and control can be so important as a creative because we often get it taken away when working under the machine. A word fr, everyone doesn't need a brand outside of who they are. And J-Lo is a good example of that. I also think Bey is Bey, so that relatability aspect when it comes to selling is missing. Beyonce is the catch, she is that superstar that people are more than happy with hearing the music and seeing her on stage bc she's that great at what she does. I do think failure is apart of the process when it comes to making businesses sometimes so one or two duds here or there isn't horrible but unfortunately audience can lose trust when it's too many, one after another.
Taylor may be th exception or one of the very few artists that actually gets her whole money from her music and everything that comes with it. Merch, tour, documentary etc.
Omg, you just posted! I was just binge-watching your content, and it's incredibly informative. Your insights gave me a fresh perspective on the music industry, especially regarding your latest videos. I love you girl, keep it up. < 3
I appreciate the love! It means so much that you're enjoying the content, and I'm glad it's giving you a new perspective. I'm always aiming to offer more to the convo so I'm glad it's translating!
The biggest issue, imo, with celebrity brands is the lack of connection between the celebrity & the brand. Gaga (who's known for her avant garde looks) & Halsey (who's a MUA themselves), having their own makeup brands makes sense. It's something they love doing. On the other hand, The Rock selling shampoo doesn't make sense. What does he know about hair care?
Music and acting are very linked to each other. Before Ariana Grande was a household name in pop, she was on the broadway show 13: the musical and Victorious, a tv show. Music isn't as profitable as it was previously. Not every superstar wants to just keep making music, they want to do other things. It makes sense, they might want to go back and forth between their different interests.
No joke the only singer that can make riri come back is billie we need billie to ask riri to come back to the music industry and also her monthly listeners shows that she still popular asf in the music industry even tho no joke she has left it imo, so riri can and will have a successful music comeback but thats why i also feel like she isn’t concerned abt her music career cause she has almost 90 million people listening to her music still even tho the last album was almost a whole decade ago so i just feel like she knows shes fine with her music career cause people love her that much.
so true! Didn't she recently say that if she could collab with anyone it would be Billie Eilish. We may need to wake that up and make that happen. If good, the song would be HUGEEEE
Rihanna's viral video in Paris, the one of her singing Glorilla's song to Asap Rocky shows that Rihanna's fans are hungry for her to sing again. She has been in the studio a lot and she did say in a recent interview that she has started from scratch. She has recorded for Asap Rocky's album too.
I only want to comment that the natural hair care products, products with moisture and less chemicals…has been necessary. There is one brand made by a celebrity that I think wasn’t just a cash grab. Her products put a flashlight on real actual haircare that works for thick coarse curly hair.
@ Pattern. I think her brand has set the standard. A few others brands that I think truly have integrity are Melanin, Camille Rose, and A Naturale Rose.
Omggg I had the Christina Aguilera perfume when I was a young teenager. But I had it because it was pretty affordable lol it was just a plus that it was from her.
Celebrities do not market to us. They are marketing to people in their tax bracket or the one right beneath them. They are aware that we will purchase it which is what makes them ultra wealthy. But, their idea of the “everyday” person SELDOM ever includes working class people. They aren’t selling to the impoverished. They are marketing to the “middle class” high school principal and the travel nurse. Their products are not for the entry level workers. Yet, we are the ones responding.
I'm honestly so tired of celebrities turning themselves into brands. Inauthenticity and commercialisation of everything is a plague. I miss the times when artists or actors just did their damn jobs and the frequent endorsements rather than constantly marketing stuff to us. It's borderline influencer behavior. While the TikTokers are trying to make it as musicians, the musicians are seeing the bank in being business owners and as a result, selling stuff to people. Of course, with record labels being stingy, the artists are gonna seek out modes to diversify their incomes. Once again, thank you late-stage capitalism, you're really killing the vibe here!
I do think the culture of influencing has bled into the world of celebrity, which is a commentary in itself. The reason why I specifically highlighted actors and musicians is because they have talked about Hollywood pay disparities, etc. And in this economy to make a living I can understand people throwing things at the wall and seeing if it sticks. Now, i can’t say much about the A-listers who are booked and busy, because they are definitely not hurting for money .
@@CamrynSuzanne admittedly, i did comment this in the middle of the video before you highlighted the nuance of the conversation. I understand the topic better now, so thank u for ur videos as always! but i wish these artists could strike a balance between the art and the business😭 though i feel like hayley williams w hair dye makes complete sense. maybe more artists should specifically go for business ventures that relate to them on a personal level.
I think people would’ve had less problem with celebrities and they’re endorsements if those endorsements actually make sense for example; the blackpink members have actually done a great job when it comes to their brand endorsements, if you look at the brands they’re ambassadors for/collaborated with you can see how much each one of these brands fit the members personalities and overall image which is why nobody was upset or at least had a problem with them working alongside the brand (and yes I still need more music 32 songs aren’t enough, how the hell is your discography less than three hours? IM TIRED😭) but hey at least they’re giving us solo albums so yay
Ohh I love to hear that especially within the context of a group! It can be tricky on finding the right group endorsements but even more so, the right individual endorsements for each member. So they are def on their P's and Q's with that.
Artist: a person who creates art (such as painting, sculpture, music, or writing) using conscious skill and creative imagination. The issue is all of the celebs are all doing the same stuff. S/o Ri for helping colored women get products that work. Outside of that they all doing the same sht. A lot of the big names mentioned are “look at me celebs” and sell SPECIFICALLY to the insecurities of their audiences. Congrats on the Vogue plug, be great Miss Michigan 🔥
yeah you got a point there, it's really about the intention and someone lie Rihanna changed the game with her product and it resonated so well with consumers
another great video! the beauty brands are suspicious because how different could they all be?...are they even all that different in formulas? Also, the 'wicked' promotion is a disaster. Would love to hear your thoughts on that! will 'wicked' flop hard?
i mean i feel like Selena Gomez's light is just getting brighter she's been praised left and right for her acting in Emilia Pérez, for Only Murders In The Building and even the Wizards reboot was well received plus she started off as an actress never thought of herself as a singer it was more DC's idea and yes she has delievered bops but she's always said acting is her main passion, and it feels like she's more active acting now than ever Rare Beauty is amazing too ngl and i love the brand but it's not Selena's only thing, she even has a emmy-nomnated cooking show she's like a real life Barbie, booked & busy.
Yeah, the rise in consumerism is getting out of hand. My budget is tight honey & I gotta be smart with my spending. When they start lowering the cost of living, then maybe I can support these artists and buy a product or two. Until then, my coincè is limited Bey! 🙅🏽♀️🤣
COTY owned those 2010s perfumes. The celebrities are brought in for their names ro earn a percent. They dint own them. Some celebrities are more involved than than others. I read that SJP and JLo were pretty involved in their scents while some other celebs just gave their names and didnt care beyond that. There was a very interesting book where a journalist followed the creation of two perfumes for a year that explained a lot of the process. I think its called a year in scent.
Yes, actually I believe COTY does a lot of manufacturing from some make up brands today. They weren't owned by these celebs, I was pointing out the pattern of celebs and their faces & names associated with products around that time
Theres a difference between making a brand with the intention of making money just because it has your name and actually taking time to make a company that represents them and that fans and people would buy because the product is good ,like riri for people of color who back then in 2017 makeup brands didn’t make dark shades at all and, selena with rare it’s friendly packaging for people who have lupus like those companies were made with a good intention and actually making peoples money worth it, but then the companies that are just name are like the kardashians no joke some of there companies are kinda trash and like millie no joke who actually buys from her company cause the products are good like yk then theres the old A list celebrities who think they’re name will make there company money when it doesn’t like jlo beauty gurl aint no one wanted that, so honestly some companies can be good if they have the intention of making a good product that can be marketed well and that people will love slay but if its just your name unless your loved at the moment it will either fail or people will say that the bill must be that high.
Yes! That value proposition. How is your product, for the price, and quality adding value to my life. And rihanna has been excellent at executing that at the right time & moment. Where she has gained the trust of consumers. Selena Gomez also did a great thing with rare beauty and it's being well received. I also think that they both didn't make themselves the sole marketing point. They put the products at the forefront, models etc. vs. Kylie who made her entire brand centered around who she is. (which worked for a good while, but what happens when the public grows a sour relationship w/ you or you fade into the background)...People won't be checking for the brand in the same way they did before. The actual product isn't offering unique value
With Fenty Beauty, I wonder what it made it successful in comparison to Iman, who started her own makeup line in the 80’s for the same reason(she’s arguably the first black woman to do this)? 🤔
@ being honest i dont know who iman is and that’s probably the reason why she doesn’t get the credit also the fact it was the 80s and racism was still around so people probably didn’t care about her or ignored her or probably just didn’t care but unlike riri where its more progressive and well she’s famous and liked by many thats why her company exploded and also in 2017 the prime time for makeup fenty making many dark shades was loved and praised but im sure if iman did it right now or even when riri did it she would have blown up.
Thanks for the video yet again. Another good one Camryn! Random but Pastry sneakers may have been the best Simmons family brand we ever got. Baby Phat being the second. We wore those out. And the original Beyoncé Heat fragrances were great. Now, it just feels as if the celeb merch market is now oversaturated. It is as if they don't realize that what made those things special was how scarce the celeb brands were in the mid 2000s. Now, all they are doing is making celeb brands to maintain their money and not expanding their portfolio.
I think an example of good balance between music and business is Nicki's pink Friday nails and numerous brand deals with designer brands. Nicki's revenue obviously comes from music but its not too much to have a business that sells and markets her brand of avant gardeness to her consumers that's affordable. I think the success of Rihanna, Nicki & Selena differenciate from Beyonce, Fenty beauty impacted the beauty industry, and Nicki's pink Friday nails and sneakers are affordable. Both sell a plausible image unlike Beyonce. But Beyonce turned it around with products that are more in her lane of luxury.
It's been on my mind lately with all the new celeb brands dropping & I don't think it will slow down anytime soon. If anything, they'll probably keep moving to different industries
Yup, and who blames them cause unless you are t-swift making all that money from vinyls or your drake cashing out multi million dollar contracts you can’t keep up. Streaming won’t pay the bills.
lowkey, True Religion is such a "hood" brand, its PERFECT for Sexyy Red to have gotten it. I know Megan is the bigger artist but i don't think the relation is there. Megan is more polished sex symbol, Sexyy is Ghetto Fine Hood B*tch and there would be MORE relatability w/ Sexyy, especially if she mentions them in her next few songs.
Camryn sis, I think that Cècred will really stick for Beyonce as it feels more like her. If she remains consistent though because the reviews are honestly very good
I like music artists founding their business ventures because they’re understanding the power of ownership. A lot of them came into the public eye not owning their music, and seeing corporate companies take the lion share of profits from their labour creating art & touring. I respect artists leveraging their fame to start a business they _do_ own that can potentially earn them far more generational wealth than if they lent their face & influence to build someone else’s. Why build theirs when you can build your own? Also, once they see how much money they can make from owning a profitable business, it suddenly makes music seem like an extremely laborious, extremely time-consuming, high-effort, low-return venture or an expensive hobby. Like, I’m sure Jessica Simpson earned far more from her business than she ever did singing.😅 we know despite a massive catalogue of 14 no.1s, successful tours and 100s of millions of records sold, Rihanna earned _far_ more from her business ventures in _far_ less time.
Honestly I get it. As much as I miss Riri😭🙌 I understand why artists branch out. The entertainment industry is so uncertain. So having something else under your belt is not a bad thing in my opinion. People, some, always get mad at celebrities doing something to stay relevant and unfortunately that's the quick world we living in. Rihanna needs to bring back 'Nude' tho😭💔 That was my signature scent and now it's no longer sold
it also bothers me when artists have been putting out less and less music and more product and people keep saying "we dont want your products, we want music." ok well what if they dont wanna make music anymore? would you rather them throw you a bone and make a low effort/low quality music just to placate you? the artist is doing something else. get with it or dont. they will be missed but the era is over.
I do just think of music as this purely artistic thing, some kind of new song they're dropping that's a fun bop to add to my playlist. But yeah the people behind it need to get paid, it's a job a livelihood that they sorely need to be compensated for. So ig I should be more understanding really, we're all here needing to make money.
I wish that music could get back to the artistically being at the forefront, but unfortunately, when greedy people made this into a billion dollar global business, the art and the artists were taking a back seat🥲
Bro no joke r.e.m beauty no joke seems like a cashgrab like it seems kinda desperate how much ariana tries to keep promoting rem but aint no one buying it no joke when it launched people hated it and the only thing that had hype where the pot concealer and lip oils but it died off so fast cause no joke rem doesn’t feel like ariana grande no joke she should do what gaga did she saved haus labs cause it was a flop honestly but the rebrand helped it so much and thats what ariana needs to do with rem.
I'm not gonna lie, I was quite suprised that Ari created a make up line. Her perfumes were always great and pretty successful considering a lot of celebs kinda left the perfume space. I will say that I've tried the foundation and I really like the formula alot. The pricess thooo are a bit hefty for me to consistently drop money on it
They’re definitely not sucking money out of anyone. Y’all don’t gotta buy any of the non necessity items. Let’s not forget that they are working for a liable that puts millions of dollars behind them. That’s not going into their pocket, and rightfully so.

It's crazy because it seems so silly to be irritated by Ariana being in Wicked when she literally started off in musical theater😭
Agreed. I don’t know why people are upset about Wicked, she’s always been a musician and an actor.
@@myladyofmercy14 I'm pretty sure most people first saw Ariana through Victorious so I genuinely don't understand the outrage 💀

I remember when every celebrity was dropping a skin care brand. 😂😂😂
Right bc how quickly did they make that🥴 skin care can take years to develop
It's understandable to venture into smth that you're more in control of
Around 2010, maybe even before that Rihanna did an interview and said that she’d like to have her own make up/beauty/fashion business because she didn’t want to ever have to rely on touring as she got older ☕️
Riri has clearly been plotting for years to escape music industry control & she actually did it!
And that’s why there’s a bunch of her music peers that have followed her lead into the beauty space hoping for similar success ☕️
With that being said, I love that coming to fruition for her. She's always seemed quite passionate with the launches and that has read.
I'm kind of mindblown, didn't realize there were so many celebrity skin care products
There’s so many and i feel like I didn’t even list
Most of themm😳
Cat was an ok role for her but it wasn’t like sone genius professional acting.
Wicked hopefully will show how much she’s grown..
if artists need to side hustle it's a clear sign that labels don't work
Yup! It’s a bigger commentary on how these structures aren’t working
I completely understand why artists and actors are becoming CEOs. I'll never forgot the 1 single lesson I remember from my media class years ago:
The shows you watch, the music or radio stations you listen to, the sports you watch - it is all just "the commercials for THE commercials". THE commercials is where the real money is.
It all makes sense certain celebrities are do things ESPECIALLY with the economy we are living in, like i remember Sydney Sweeney saying that something about her financial situation hints why she’s started her own production company and is in so many endorsements, campaigns and commercials.
Oh wow, I didn’t know that she said that, but I’ve been seeing her in those soap commercials. And to be honest, it makes sense why she took the bag
Okay I love these artists but the products and the price got me giving them bombastic side eyes maybe a criminal offense side eyes
I can SOMETIMES get behind the price if the quality is great but I usually am skeptical and wait till it's been out for a while. Also, you can often find products of a similar quality for a fraction of the price
@CamrynSuzanne I can see where you coming from but it's hard to find a good product where I'm like here my wallet and I'm here for the product that was worth it
Because it’s capitalist greed! No one needs to accumulate a billion dollars
Rihanna did it best cause she even had the puma creepers and they was everywhere back in like 2016-2019
Why i forgot about that??😳😳

Wow. Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty & it’s cultural impact needs to be studied, seriously

Yeppp when physical media goes down the gutter, then they gotta find some other product to sell
I personally think a deeper discussion of capitalism would benefit this video a lot!
in response to the wicked-kardash tweet, someone said a youth theater program missed out on an potential life-changing opportunity for their kids.

But like I said, no fans are entitled to what they choose to do with their career

as someone who wants to make music but is also getting a degree in business management and finance. i think music and business creation is one in the same when you sign a deal to be a music artist that’s a business right there it’s the business of making your art so it’s not surprising that some would move to actually owning a business they not only want to own something for themselves and not have someone over them to tell them what to do but also it’s to also leave a piece of themselves not only in music but outside of it where they can show more of themselves but also show there creativity.
Absolutely and they should be allowed the freedom to do that
No joke the only singer that can make riri come back is billie we need billie to ask riri to come back to the music industry and also her monthly listeners shows that she still popular asf in the music industry even tho no joke she has left it imo, so riri can and will have a successful music comeback but thats why i also feel like she isn’t concerned abt her music career cause she has almost 90 million people listening to her music still even tho the last album was almost a whole decade ago so i just feel like she knows shes fine with her music career cause people love her that much.
Whose brand is this because maybe I need to tap in?
Yess we would by our favs perfume!!
@ girl, I just checked it’s $40 now and I used to buy it in a drugstore for about €10,- omg
I love all of your videos ! Your editing & all the details you include are always on point ! Thank you for all of your hard work, Camryn ! 💙
I Appreciate it so much! ❤️❤️❤️
So they are def on their P's and Q's with that.
great video as always. im so obsessed with u and your channel 💓
Thank you so much for always supporting 💖
You always find a way to make a video about what I’m thinking about.
Music doesn't pay like it use to and they can't fake that shit anymore
Yep can’t fake the funk
i mean i feel like Selena Gomez's light is just getting brighter she's been praised left and right for her acting in Emilia Pérez, for Only Murders In The Building and even the Wizards reboot was well received plus she started off as an actress never thought of herself as a singer it was more DC's idea and yes she has delievered bops but she's always said acting is her main passion, and it feels like she's more active acting now than ever
Rare Beauty is amazing too ngl and i love the brand but it's not Selena's only thing, she even has a emmy-nomnated cooking show
she's like a real life Barbie, booked & busy.
Yeah, the rise in consumerism is getting out of hand. My budget is tight honey & I gotta be smart with my spending. When they start lowering the cost of living, then maybe I can support these artists and buy a product or two. Until then, my coincè is limited Bey! 🙅🏽♀️🤣
It's a whole mood😂 I understand!!
Sydney Sweeney said the same thing about the business. That's why she has taken so many brand deals. Also, Nelly is bringing back Apple bottom jeans.
I agree on everything in this whole vid; thank you for feeding us. ❤❤❤❤
They weren't owned by these celebs, I was pointing out the pattern of celebs and their faces & names associated with products around that time
This is definitely a trend! Great topic. 👏
I think so too! It's going to be interesting to see where this goes for all these artists.
U spoke the truth truth!
Been thinking about this topic for a min, it so true
It's been on my mind lately with all the new celeb brands dropping & I don't think it will slow down anytime soon. If anything, they'll probably keep moving to different industries
Yup, and who blames them cause unless you are t-swift making all that money from vinyls or your drake cashing out multi million dollar contracts you can’t keep up. Streaming won’t pay the bills.
I’m really shocked at all those liquor brands are people really drinking like that ?? Are the liquors really selling ?
That's what I'm tryna figure outt really! There are sooo many, it's crazy
Great video as always Camryn! And yes, people don't forge to vote!
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it!🙌🏽🙌🏽 yess we gotta vote it’s so important
Why would they think sexxy red should’ve gotten that deal??? Like huh
That’s what I’m trying to figure out
lowkey, True Religion is such a "hood" brand, its PERFECT for Sexyy Red to have gotten it. I know Megan is the bigger artist but i don't think the relation is there. Megan is more polished sex symbol, Sexyy is Ghetto Fine Hood B*tch and there would be MORE relatability w/ Sexyy, especially if she mentions them in her next few songs.
I had Mariah Carey’s perfume and Sarah Jessica Parker’s perfumes back in the day. Love your take as always. BTW…I voted last week !
It's always wild to me how many celeb perfumes came out back in the day!😩 but thosee were the best. Also super glad you voted!!!
Another great topic
Glad you like it! 🥰
Yeah! Cam is back with another video !
Back at it!
Camryn sis, I think that Cècred will really stick for Beyonce as it feels more like her. If she remains consistent though because the reviews are honestly very good
Yeah it's about the consistency and I think she’s figured out a formula that's gonna work
Another banger video!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed it 😉
Celebrities don’t gaf if we can afford their products so why should we care about theirs 😂
Oop
i love this , love from99
I like music artists founding their business ventures because they’re understanding the power of ownership.
Omggg are you serious? Nude was my faveeeeee!!! 🥺
it also bothers me when artists have been putting out less and less music and more product and people keep saying "we dont want your products, we want music." ok well what if they dont wanna make music anymore? would you rather them throw you a bone and make a low effort/low quality music just to placate you? the artist is doing something else. get with it or dont. they will be missed but the era is over.
i say "artists" to speak generally but we all know this is about rhianna 💀
I do just think of music as this purely artistic thing, some kind of new song they're dropping that's a fun bop to add to my playlist. But yeah the people behind it need to get paid, it's a job a livelihood that they sorely need to be compensated for. So ig I should be more understanding really, we're all here needing to make money.
I wish that music could get back to the artistically being at the forefront, but unfortunately, when greedy people made this into a billion dollar global business, the art and the artists were taking a back seat🥲
@@CamrynSuzanne truly, everything at this point is for a profit
The pricess thooo are a bit hefty for me to consistently drop money on it
This is why i continously support Dua Lipa
@@XavierWilliams-tu3xf she really just goes on her trips , makes her music and minds her business 😂😂😂
the way I'm on my knees for Rhianna to release just ONE song in this music drought I'm having 😭
They’re definitely not sucking money out of anyone. Y’all don’t gotta buy any of the non necessity items.
Let’s not forget that they are working for a liable that puts millions of dollars behind them. That’s not going into their pocket, and rightfully so.
GO VOTE YALL!!!!!
YES, VOTE!!
@ yoooo you’re videos are fire I was watching this one while wrapping up my portfolio for Uni and then a giant roach came out of nowhere. Then I screamed and my bf killed it. I still finished the video tho🫡🫨
Most of the celeb skin care brands aren't of interest to me, but if Paul Rudd ever comes out with skin care I will buy every single item.
As someone studying international business this makes me happy cause I can actually use my skills and get PAID
👏🏾
imagine selling music and making millions, only to get 1mil and u still have to look rich infront of people.
Puma x Fenty the x means “by” or “and” not times 😂😂 this is a new pet peeve of mine😂😂😂
