Happy Friday🎉 Today we are discussing female r&b. What do you guys think of the trajectory of women in the genre? Grab you snack, kick your feet up, there’s a lot to unpack today😉
Today’s female R&b artists are definitely selling an image mixed in with basic lyrics that the casual consumer can grasp . The lyrics unfortunately are meaningless, obscure, and targets an audience that dislikes men. Our artists prior to them made hits that have replay value, which many are touring off of them today, continue to decades from now
Let's not demotivate our modern music it's our generation and their marking an era of modern girls 95% of women want to be for the streets and that's facts
A few of these r&b singers are from California which is a vibe by itself because of the beautiful weather all year round. Kehlani, Monet, Jhene, HER etc. Do you think that laid back environment could be having an effect on these singers style? Whitney Houston was an technical singer but she was from a harsher climate that has all 4 seasons the East Coast.
I can see some aspects with certain artists, and some with others. Each artist has their own niche and a voice that is recognizable. I listen to all of these girls and I can say that they are all amazing in their specific lights and even specific eras. For example, SZA’s CTRL is one of my favorite albums, as well as a standard for *contemporary* R&B that was heartfelt and relatable, and the production provided an instrument for her vocals. But Z and S.O.S are so incredibly different from this album. Z is ethereal and impactful, and S.O.S is… something. Since SZA has recently expressed she can’t put herself in her music, I can see where she lost the plot on this one. She also needs to get over that damn ex fiancé. To provide contrast, Summer Walker has provided a space for those who struggle with toxic relationships with Over It and Still Over It commenting on her relationship with London. As she moves away from that, it’s understandable for her sounds to change a bit. Mariah the Scientist has a space for those who have struggled with mental health, suicide, big life decisions and the journey of finding faith in oneself. R&B is the genre of experience, especially with yourself, and It just doesn’t feel fair to reduce these amazing artists who, can sing though maybe not as well, to ‘hookah’, just one or even no aspect of their personality. It frankly seems a bit misogynistic.
@@tatertots0046two different types of voices. Cleo has amazing music, I've been listening to her since 2018 but Jasmine would sing circles around her. Jasmine's range and runs are honestly unmatched by any new artist out right now.
Honestly, this makes me think about Ari Lennox. Ari Lennox should be bigger than what she is. She’s bringing that neo-soul R&B music back from the late 90s/early 00s, and I really hate how some people don’t appreciate the albums she has dropped (I want another album from her so bad plus i been playing the heck out of Mean Mug 🥲).
Yeah, Ari Lennox is really in a lane of her own within the mainstream R&B! I really like a lot of her stuff. I just hate how she was treated on to her not too long ago so I hope she can keep that motivation and people will put some respect on her name
I totally agree, I’ve had her albums on repeat lately! I think Muni Long has a very similar quality, bringing back a sound in female R&B that’s not super present rn
Yep I thought I was listening to old music because, well I'm old lol. I see so many comments though with younger kids saying they only listen to music from those eras too.
I need yall to get into Cleo Sol because absolutely no one has mentioned her! She’s everything people want in rnb from the vocals to production to the lyrics. Her music and vocals feel like being wrapped in a comforting hug for a few hours. She just remind of everything warms my heart and cozy. Her album Rose In The Dark is an absolute must and got me through some dark times. She’s also in the group Sault with rapper Little Simz
I also believe that it’s not just the vocals, but it’s the mellow beats that they use as well that results in the watered down rnb sound that we have now. Even when the singer has strong vocals, the song never seems to resonate with me bc the beat doesn’t hit like I want it to. I think it’s bc they don’t use instruments anymore since everything is done on a computer now. Edit: I made this comment before finishing the video and you actually touched on this too
This is so true! Thank you for elaborating because I touched on it but very briefly. I think this is a major factor that a lot of of the girls who can sing aren’t choosing the right music or are choosing sleepy beats
Everything is just so mediocre and done with no effort or passion. People are just way too privileged nowadays to sit and put pen to paper, study the greats and give it their all. Everyone too busy trying to show how cute they are on social media. Inflated egos combined with delusional fans have them thinking they are as good as the legends.
@CamrynSuzanne When I write, I find it takes hours, days, sometimes even months to find a beat that not only matches ME, but today's sound. I end up choosing just to wait until I find one 🤷🏿♂️

@@TreXsJournal-Coming-Soon that’s why it’s important for artists to take time to craft their music. But labels don’t care about authenticity, they only care about making a quick buck off these artists. So they force them to spit out music left and right without a break
FLO’s opening set on the Crash tour blew me away, felt like a step back in time to 90s/00s girl groups with a step into the future production-wise! This video was incredible and educational and real, thank you for this level of detail and devotion to the music!
Yeah, they crushed their opening set at Kehlani’s concert! They’re really the real deal🙌🏽 also thank you for those words. I really am proud of the research i did here! I’m so glad people are appreciating it as well
I feel like there is no romance in r&b anymore its all about sex when really I think they need to mix together rather than try to be all nasty and weird and vocals aren’t giving in r&b and pop anymore where are the vocals i don’t hear them
💯But it’s unsurprising considering we’re coming out of one of the least culturally romantic times in living memory. When Toni Braxton’s Secrets LP dropped the culture was READY to receive it. It was a more romantic time. We are still a ways from that kind of resurgence but I feel it’s coming. We are not being served by the depressing, nihilistic sentiments in current music. We are human beings not automatons, the numbing of feeling can only go on for so long before the dam bursts.
The thing is people sing about what they know, how can they sing about romance if they never experienced it? Where is the romance in the world ? Music is a reflection of society, love songs sounds nice but many people cant relate, and in a much more "woke" and "aware" society, people want what's "real", they're not receptive to fairytale music anymore and singers got way more honest with how they really feel in their music now, babyface was writing all these love songs for these women singers when they were going through all kind of toxic relationships, now there's more freedom when it comes to lyrics so rnb about the charming prince and the carriage is not dead but it wont be as prevalent as it used to be
I think this isn’t really a fair critique. RnBs popular songs have always been sexual (and pretty explicit) “If you’re h*rny let’s do it. Ride it. My pony” “Every time I close my eyes, I wake up feeling so h*rny” “I just wanna kiss you, suck you, taste you, ride you, feel you, make you c*m too” - (outro moaning) “I want you to rock the boat […], work the middle […], change positions […], stroke it for me” By all means, there are some terribly written lyrics, but that’s not the whole generation and it definitely doesn’t apply to ones known for lyrics, like SZA (technically not RnB - but still) It’s too easy to pull the “generation” critiques. Not much thought into it. It’s the same thing ppl before you did. I’ll give you that there were less “d” and “p” usage but again, we kinda got here by the previous generations using lyrics that were considered taboo to begin with.
Omg nobody else is talking about this!!! I miss when I used to FEEL their emotions in their voices. I haven’t gotten goosebumps from a song in a long time. The only recent song I can think of that gave me that feeling was muni long made for me. If I want to FEEL something in rnb music, I go back to 90’s and early 2000’s rnb.
I’m so glad I can make a video about this because I feel like it’s a bit of a hush hush conversation, even though I know a lot of people feel this way or have been discussing it!
@@nburex1163Agree now it’s a few artists, I got chills from Halle Bailey with her version of under the sea -The Little Mermaid, I Literally was crying.
when chloe and halle stopped making albums together I was so disappointed because i think their sound is unreal. Now, i fully understand them needing to develop as solo artists. when they make another album together, it will be their best work and that makes me excited. when they work together, they complete each other. without each other, they're filling the holes that they used to compliment each other and they just get better in different areas with each release. there's a lot of artist here who make me excited for what's to come
I agree with you wholeheartedly🙌🏽 I think they complement each other so well and also collaborate really well together and it creates this really fresh and unique sound. For example, example, on Chloe’s new album, Trouble In Paradise, and my favorite song was the one with her and Halle. It just had this special magic about it that I feel like was missing with some of her other solo songs.
@@MaejorArray i think whether it’s in 1 year or 10 years, they’re inevitably gonna make another album together. even if it’s when they’re 50 idc i need to hear it before i die
I feel like keyshia cole does not get the flowers she deserves, she is who I grew up on as an 06 baby and I feel like she carried for rnb in her time. I feel like she's really underrated too.
Keisha Cole’s vocals are no longer strong. Kehlani tried putting her on a song a few years ago and I think took her off? It sounded horrible, she just can’t do that iconic scream-yelling-singing like she did in “Love,” and that used to be my jam back in the day!
@@redluv123 it’s a shame because her earlier performances are some of my favorites, she’s was undoubtedly really good, she has one of my favorite voices, so it’s either she just lost it or she didn’t cater to her voice over the years.
Kiana Ledé is a female R&B artist that has the talent but just don’t get enough credit or recognition. She definitely needs 1 hit to push her mainstream 😩
The thing with Aaliyah though, is that while vibe and image were art driven and strong and she favoured a feather light delivery on many of her songs, she had great technique, a range of vocal tones/registers and could actually blow when the song called for it. Unfortunately, the majority of girls who credit her as a major influence can barely sing. You could listen to an Aaliyah song and feel satisfied vocally, whereas I can’t name one Aaliyah influenced artist who has a voice I would want to listen to Acapella.
Aaliyah her belting was rlly underrated ngl there are 2 songs where she would blow every live performance which (are also my favorite songs of her): the one i gave my heart to and journey to the past.
Say that shit!! I'm tired of people not giving her props when it comes to her vocals! Her range was phenomenal ! Her voice was soulful! They do the same with Janet Jackson! Janet will be very soulful when it's needed!

Why can't R&B have different subgenres? We don't expect all rock to sound the same? Every singer doesn't have to be some church belting vocalist. That has its place. But there can be different types of R&B.
@@Strawberryfearsforever I think it goes back to how the Black community in general likes to “box in” Blackness. We don’t like too many deviations from the norm. I remember being young and hiding the fact that I liked to listen to alternative music because I didn’t want to be made fun of or called weird. As creative as we are as people, we can still be very much limited when it comes to certain things like music. The fact that we have this ALT R&B genre is huge because we wouldn’t have been ready for that sound probably 20 years ago.
Sevyn Streeter deserved a more successful career in music. “It Won’t Stop” is a PERFECT song and should’ve been a number one hit EVERYWHERE! Her albums are really good too but sadly weren’t promoted. She is majorly slept on and it’s kinda sad.
Yeah, I like a lot of sevyn’s songs👌🏽 she also has a song called “before I do” That’s a really nice R&B. I know she also works as a songwriter frequently so she really has that full package for real.
Thank u H.E.R is a well rounded artist she truly a musician She deserves that respect She really talented with such beautiful vocals Listen to her sound journey, omg so beautiful And you are right i love the vibe and aesthetics of H.E.R it pushed more than the music so mysterious and Artsy with those Round Glasses 👓😎 of hers
Yeah I think HER deserves more credit especially for her being an overall musician. I also did like the marketing of slowly showing her face. It was completely about the music vs the look
@shanesmith-vn1ri It's not just this generation but the machine that operates this way as well Every decision they make is based on short term benefit with no real long game in mind and we've been seeing that extremely corporate mindset manifesting in the quality of (mainstream) music for years now
This is the perfect time for the R&B girlies to experiment with different sounds and subgenres because the sales on their current albums aren’t good. They have nothing to lose IMO. I want Chloe and Halle to go back and dig deeper into the sound and lane they were carving out for themselves. And I would love for NeoSoul to have a resurgence
You make an excellent point. It really is the perfect time to try different things because the same old is not selling. so what does anybody have to lose?😅
I have been saying this to people for a while! Some of the reason music has lost a lot of the soul and emotion that it once had is that the new generation coming up, hadn’t come up singing in church. We learned musicality, skill and most importantly passion in that space. Once that stopped being a prevalent place, the soul of it began to die
Not every female singer grew up singing in the church! Singing from the soul is not always about doing vocal riffs and gymnastics and trills! Any artist singing any type or style of music can sing from the soul. Chaka Khan didn't come from the church and she's a natural singer! Aaliyah didn't come from the church, and her voice was just as soulful.
Gonna need the girls with the vocals (Chloe/halle, coco jones, etc) to get more shine. Otherwise people just spend more time complaining what isn’t there instead of actually listening It’s not the 90s/2000s unfortunately but there’s more out there beyond the mainstream
Tinashe has bended this music world. She’s produced, funded her own projects, boldly explored various genres after persevering through RocNation’s tyranny, and brought various accompanying skills to the table that make her upper echelon in the genre
Jhene definitely created a new sound with Sailing Souls. 2011 brought forth alternative R&B with The Weeknd and Frank Ocean dropping similar sounds such as House of Balloons and Nostalgia/Ultra. Funny how all three were on the same wavelength at the same time, followed by SZA dropping See SZA Run a year later.
Tinashe is the queen of alternative r&b if u ask me. Starting from her beginning when she dropped mixtapes even her albums now & when she was signed to rca. You hear all her music mixed with the r&b genre, even with hip hop elements. She really masters her sound in a different way. Very dreamy pop-ish but still r&b..its just amazing idk. Thats just my thoughts thoo!! Also a lot of these new girls u can see her influence in. Tate mcrae is one, just the way she performs kinda gives tinashe.
I can get with this! She definitely lives more on that alternative R&B side but like you said she has so much diverse music to where I almost hesitate to put her in that box. She’s really really great. I love Tinashe.
@@CamrynSuzanne plz do a video on that next!!😁people who influence/ peaved the way for the new generation but get little to no acknowledgement!! Brandy, azealia banks & tinashe to name a few!!
This! Tinashe’s music lives in this perfect blend of alternative R&B, pop, electronica, trap, and hip hop. I listened to Songs for You for the first time a month ago and realized she created her own sub genre.
This vid def brought me to the realization of why I love vid essays… breaking down history within our culture with no bias, the research and sourcing… when you miss the elements of learning & actual discussion, these video essays are a breath of fresh air… thank you so much! You have been killing it! All these long and thorough videos! With actually new and refreshing topics, not the recycled generic ones. I’m clocking the other channels following your ideas 👀. Keep it up!!
I love your content girlie! Samara Joy is an artist yall should check out. While she’s not in the R&B category and more so under the vocal jazz umbrella, SHE’S A VOCALIST and has a lot of R&B, and Gospel influences in her voice. She makes great jazz music. Should totally check her out if you want something a little different. I’m always trying to turn new listeners on to her. She’s a rare jewel in today’s musical climate.
you should make spotify / apple music playlists catered to your topics ! Like i'd love to see all your favorite songs from these wonderful singers or maybe your favorite songs / albums from this year so far
I saw that you were excited about reaching 70k subscribers and thought this was an old video! Your stuff gives million plus subscribers materials! Congrats on 70k!
I'm in a feeling of LACK not hearing Kelela's name once during this video but it's ok cuz Camryn you are absolutely killing it with your content lately. You have me chuckling and spitting out one liners with you. This was perfect w my morning tea thank you
I LOVE Kelela!! You can tell she pours so much heart into her music and her sound actually feels refreshing; she builds such a beautiful emotional landscape. She's with WARP, an independent label, and is best friends with Solange.
Kelela is a gem. Not sure if she fits in this conversation because she’s like Twigs, is the genre really RnB? Or is it a fusion, multi-genre. Especially Raven, I wouldn’t call that an RnB project at all.
this is such an informative video & i learned a lot through this video about the history of r&b & how it came to be along w/ the different sub genres & how influencial it is to this day especially in the east where a lot of kpop, k-hiphop, k-r&b, jpop & j-r&b acts are gradually introducing us back into this genre that leads us to discovering & rediscovering a lot of hidden gems or songs & artists that we haven't listened to/heard in a long time :))
I’m glad the video was able to be informative! That’s always the goal because I think it connects a lot of dots. And you’re right R&B for example examples had a lot of influence globally so it’s important we know the history👏🏽
@@SideEyeee_”she improved herself” and that’s part of the problem, these people are pushed to the forefront before having to actually prove themselves. just lightskin and vibes.
@@SideEyeee_I’m sooo sorry, lol but there is no way you think Chloe and Halle are mid singers… while defending the likes of MTS. Actually insane. Lmaooo
This is my new FAVORITE channel!!! I’ve been sharing it with all of my music lover friends. This is amazing. Thank you for being researched and knowledgeable. Please continue with this content. It’s so necessary.💜🤞🏾✨
For Chloe, I think her music now (especially trouble in paradise) is more authentic to her. It was a big jump from her CxH image but I think that image was more curated for that duo than how she actually is. She has always been the more expressive sister who pushed it with her appearance and her performances. She’s always been more flashy and showy. She just has the freedom to show more of her authenticity and sexuality. (Great video btw)
Yeah, to be honest with you I think Trouble In Paradise is closer to a sound that suits Chloe a lot better. And to be fair, we do have to give artist time to grow and figure out their sound so we definitely have to leave space for that. Also, thank you for watching.🙌🏽
Thank you. This is what I've been saying. People are complaining that she changed or whatever but like she hasn't. This is her personality and what you were seeing was her image as a duo. People saying it's not the real her as if they know her more than she knows herself just because they've only seen her curated image as as part of a duo. I've been saying this but so many people just don't get it. It's so nice to see people say it.
Yeah, listen to her music a bit, but I haven’t gotten really into it yet. I’m definitely gonna do a little deep dive into her discography on my free time.🙌🏽
I wouldn't call most of the mainstream rnb girls we have now "Vocalists" . They're just singers in my opinion but not vocalists. Chloe is the one of the only vocalists we have now in mainstream Rnb but I don't think she shows it enough in her music.
Such a great video, and I love that you went through the history of R&B. I'm a 90's baby who grew up on Brandy, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, etc. and I agree with so much of what you said. As an aspiring/part-time R&B singer myself, I've learned over time that emotion and vocal uniqueness is missing in a lot of today's music, along with those harmonies and runs I've come to love from people like Brandy. Even in the music I release (although I'm HUGE on harmonies and working on my ad-libs/runs) I retrospectively realized my 1st album was lacking in emotion which is SO key when it comes to true R&B. Not to toot my own horn, but I recently released my 2nd project "Serenade" and I'd love to know your thoughts on it (even if just on 1 song) if you have the time, because I'm really trying to channel that 90s R&B sound and bring back a less explicit yet vulnerable and smooth feel. & thanks so much for making this video, I truly enjoyed it ☺
Camryn you made my soul smile when you mentioned Jhene starting a wave with Sailing souls, everyone seems to forget her when we talk about who originated Alt rnb, and usually only mention The Weeknd or Frank
First of all, I have no idea how I found this video but I'm glad I did. The detailed history lesson alone was an excellent setup for the topic. If I had not grow up with R&B, I would've been absolutely edified and brought up to speed with this video. Thank you.
I love your videos because I feel like you understand the nuances of music artistry and music as a sonic experience rather than just a song. I would add Ari Lennox, Lianne Lahavas, Mahalia and Umi to your list of new school R&B gorls 📌
Okay I am going to argue refill by Elle varner because that was my grandma's favorite song. The rawness of it the fullness of the song and just the message. It fully encapsulates being young in the 2010s and wanting to fit in. It's what's lost now we don't have yearning
Can we talk about how simply being melanated while possessing any kind of soulful or melismatic voice would cause a singer to be automatically labelled “R&B”? I grew up thinking I was an R&B-head, just to look back and realise I was enjoying mostly Black Pop stars who were labeled r&b _because_ they were Black in an era where R&B music and Pop music were one and the same. The Billboard R&B chart was literally named the “Hot Black Singles Chart” until 1990. 😅 And it goes both ways, sometimes a white pop singer would make faithful attempts at r&b but would still be labeled “Pop”. Ariana Grande has some records that are faithful to both traditional & contemporary R&B, but because she’s considered a “white pop star”, she’s not really included in R&B conversations, while other white singers like Teena Marie were welcomed with open arms. It’s interesting 🤔
I have genuinely wondered this😳 it’s great you point this out and in a way I feel deserves a deep dive even bc it is interesting how someone like ari is always pop but like you said teena marie was considered r&b. And yeah you hit the nail on the head, a black, soulful singer is almost automatically placed in r&b
@@CamrynSuzanne sometimes i feel it’s more about the branding, marketing & image, than it is about the music bc we all know if a black woman had made the ‘positions’ album it would likely be considered a contemporary R&B album. Not to mention artists like FKA twigs actively pushed back against being labeled R&B. Twigs said that before people had seen her face they couldn’t place her music but once they discovered her black heritage it was automatically pigeonholed in alt-r&b. That’s weird. This whole “pop = white, r&b = black”, thing needs to stop. 🛑 It kinda makes realise how arbitrary genre can be, and I think that’s what Beyonce was trying to say on Cowboy Carter. That album was very much a commentary on genre rather than a faithful attempt at Country.
I love how this channel is educational for music fans as much as its a place for silliness and discussion. I know a lot of the artists you mentioned but now I have some new recs. You need to make like an educational playlist 😂 I agree that some of the overproduction in RnB can make even talented singers sound boring. And I also agree that singers are either discouraged or maybe just disinterested in doing all the vocal gymnastics I HIGHLY miss. Also I gasped when you said you didn't like the Chloe album but when you brought up lyricism I had to respectfully put my head down. Bc you're right. One of my fave tracks was Temporarily Single but if I'm being gonest I haven't paid attention to her lyrics on this album at all. Also for RnB I think I also hang around the neo-soul, pop-rnb, alt-rnb niche for modern artists. I didn't know how to find the "pure" rnb I remembered from the 80's/90's so I'm taking your recs. Mine are: Jenevieve, Kali Uchis (does a variety of styles also sings in spanish), Dreamer Isioma
Aye, I love to hear it👏🏽 that’s the fun part about my channel is I love getting into the history but like we don’t gotta be too serious. I feel like we always have fun over here so I’m so glad you pointed that out.😊 honestly you hit the nail on the head with all of these comments! I know from the opinion it’s quite unpopular because a lot of people really enjoy the album. Vocally she sounded great, I think she’s getting closer to her sound as a solo artist, I just couldn’t get over some of those lyrics😭
Excellent video! You are one of my favourite commentary youtubers. Wish you all the success. With regards to the song writing part of the video, I feel like a serious discussion is needed to correlate the deterioration of song writing especially in America with the literacy and education crisis.
off topic currently watching your video, you are absolutely stunning and I can tell you actually put time into your videos. Thank you and congratulations on 73k.
the lack of lyricism gets me, not just r&b but everything. every lyric is so basic now. it really bothers me with rap because lyricism is the whole point. even songs about sex, the lyrics used to be more carefully crafted and clever, in a way that made it feel more erotic because of the presentation. but now its blunt and gross, you dont get extra points for being nasty with no poetry 😭 i dont think everyone has to be an amazing lyricist, but when the vocals arent even making up for it? come on. and on an unrelated note: thank you for touching on the "relatability" thing cause it's been bothering me for years 😒 not just with music, but everything. music, movies, art, people, its ridiculous. "i dont like this celebrity cause theyre not relatable," well no, theyre rich and famous and youre normal and normal? love your videos, and i love the community you've built! its nice seeing normal people talk about music without being crazy.

I’m taking notes as I’m finally embracing my voice & music passion & career! Glad to know I’m on the right track in what I’m creating. & getting ready to share with the world. I’m a 90s baby & will always love old school r&b music. It just hits different in a way they truly evokes emotion & fulfillment in listening to the lyrics. Feeling the heart and soul of the artist & the vocal techniques & uniqueness.
A 90's singer who I adore but she doesn't get her flowers is Mýa. She came from the golden era of TALENT. While Mýa has a lighter voice, she is true to the art and has continued to remain relevant since 1998. She knows her instrument. She's true RNB though she had her pop era in the major label system (hell, it got her a Grammy). From majors to being an independent artist (Grammy nominated), she is THAT girl. Was so happy to see her killing it on the Queen's or RNB tour.
One of the best RnB singers from the 90s that I feel is still criminally underrated is Chanté Moore. She has the vocals, the stage presence, and the looks (and is still a great performer to this day) and has a solid discography. JoJo has also consistently stayed as one of the best vocalists in RnB since her literal childhood and just keeps getting better and better (same as Tori Kelly). I'd recommending giving her 2021 EP "Trying not to think about it' a listen! I realize you can't possibly mention everyone in the video, so I thought I'd give them a mention in here 🫀
Once again, you have knocked it out of the park, I love these last two videos and how you go in depth about the history of R&B. Mic the Snare has a few videos about The Music That Define The Decades series. I love would a video like that from you but about R&B from the 90s, 00s and 10s. I can see you pulling that off
One of my ultimate favourite videos you have done!! Beautifully constructed and delivered from start to finish!! I enjoy your videos, continue doing amazing things! A new artist that I listen to that you didn’t mention is Inayah Lamis 🥰
I’m not even done, about 10 min in. And the amount of history, and preparation, and respect for the genre. Phew! As a musician currently working on branding, crafting my sound, and the direction I want to take my music, this is like a master class, and such beautiful confirmation that I’m headed in the right direction. The history speaks for itself. Bravo on all the hard work you put in to these videos. Only my second video and already a subscriber. Thank you for putting us on game! ❤
The Roof by Mariah Carey has to be one of my all time favourite songs ever. The lyricism, the vocals, all of it is just chefs kiss. RNB at its finest (to me anyway)
Now Ms. Camryn, I really enjoyed this. This was masterfully put together. Masterfully. Put. Together. I enjoyed your male r&b production as well. Am a lifelong lover of female r&b, including all of the nuances you beautifully and comically discussed. I'm happy to have found your channel, and I thank you for the video!

One of my favourite videos from you so far! Thank you for your informative video and for shedding light on some queens I never heard of. I never realised I was so influenced by it, that “mellow” sound I thought was just my taste but that’s really all we can receive from the rnb women these days. I love that we can all agree on the same women or group of women who are bringing tastes of the old days that aren’t as watered down. Love this and you so much Cameryn🎉🎉

I LOVE U MENTION ALINA BARAZ. She is soo underrated with the color of you and even urban floral which literally went platinum but nobody talks about how that album needs soo much praise. Those 2 albums are soo supreme
I don’t agree with Jhene, her vocals aren’t appreciated because they aren’t dramatic. However I have watched actuallly singing coaches critique her singing and her vocal control and live mic manipulation is not easily replicated. Which is why I think even though people might call her whisper r&b there is a reason why the other girls sound different to her. Also she’s created her own ethereal sound.
@@firsteditionb Thank you for pointing this out. Her music is so inspirational but heavenly euphoric at times to with meaningful lyrics IMO. She's pretty cool in my books
Please check out Annie Tracy. This was a great and truthful episode. Thank you for breaking it down to the people.
I would describe "Hookah R&B" as toxic love songs with very processed vocals and heavily HipHop influenced production

Jazmines latest project 🔥 🔥 Her voice definitely makes you feel what she’s saying. She is an incredible voice for sure!
@@Thehoneyb they are different styles. Jasmine is more gospel, Cleo is more Neo Soul

I need yall to get into Cleo Sol because absolutely no one has mentioned her! She’s everything people want in rnb from the vocals to production to the lyrics. Her music and vocals feel like being wrapped in a comforting hug for a few hours. She just remind of everything warms my heart and cozy. I loveeeee Cleo!

@@TreXsJournal-Coming-Soon that’s why it’s important for artists to take time to craft their music. But labels don’t care about authenticity, they only care about making a quick buck off these artists. So they force them to spit out music left and right without a break

I feel like there is no romance in r&b anymore its all about sex when really I think they need to mix together rather than try to be all nasty and weird and vocals aren’t giving in r&b and pop anymore where are the vocals i don’t hear them
Yep, the romance is missing. It just feels so straightforward.
Music is a reflection of society, love songs sounds nice but many people cant relate, and in a much more "woke" and "aware" society, people want what's "real", they're not receptive to fairytale music anymore and singers got way more honest with how they really feel in their music now, babyface was writing all these love songs for these women singers when they were going through all kind of toxic relationships, now there's more freedom when it comes to lyrics so rnb about the charming prince and the carriage is not dead but it wont be as prevalent as it used to be
@@971Cici I definitely get what your saying I like this perspective I was just pointing out what I was noticing
I think this isn’t really a fair critique. RnBs popular songs have always been sexual (and pretty explicit)
“If you’re h*rny let’s do it. Ride it. My pony”
“Every time I close my eyes, I wake up feeling so h*rny”
“I just wanna kiss you, suck you, taste you, ride you, feel you, make you c*m too” - (outro moaning)
“I want you to rock the boat […], work the middle […], change positions […], stroke it for me”
By all means, there are some terribly written lyrics, but that’s not the whole generation and it definitely doesn’t apply to ones known for lyrics, like SZA (technically not RnB - but still)
It’s too easy to pull the “generation” critiques.

The thing with Aaliyah though, is that while vibe and image were art driven and strong and she favoured a feather light delivery on many of her songs, she had great technique, a range of vocal tones/registers and could actually blow when the song called for it.

@@CamrynSuzanne girllll come on nowww you clocking that tea so hard I knew somebody out there was smart
You nailed it right on the head
Yesss foresure, I really think that is a huge huge component
Not every female singer grew up singing in the church! Singing from the soul is not always about doing vocal riffs and gymnastics and trills! Any artist singing any type or style of music can sing from the soul. Chaka Khan didn't come from the church and she's a natural singer! I've been saying this but so many people just don't get it. It's so nice to see people say it.
@@Des17SYes! Not to mention her being a child for the majority of that time.
@@stayfly3000 literally. People are like "she's just doing the good girl gone bad thing again" I'm like you mean child becoming an adult? Lol.
Rayvn Lenae feels like a throwback to Quiet Storm which I love
Yeah, listen to her music a bit, but I haven’t gotten really into it yet. I’m definitely gonna do a little deep dive into her discography on my free time.🙌🏽
YES! Ravyn Lenae mention!
Love her! Her voice is super unique. Her song skin tight is…. A spiritual experience
I wouldn't call most of the mainstream rnb girls we have now "Vocalists" . They're just singers in my opinion but not vocalists. Chloe is the one of the only vocalists we have now in mainstream Rnb but I don't think she shows it enough in her music.
Chlöe was sanging on Trouble In Paradise
I loved that JoJo was included on this :,)
Love me someee Jojo✨
& thanks so much for making this video, I truly enjoyed it ☺
That emancipation of Mimi cover art on your wall is everything 🥹♥️
Camryn you made my soul smile when you mentioned Jhene starting a wave with Sailing souls, everyone seems to forget her when we talk about who originated Alt rnb, and usually only mention The Weeknd or Frank
Yep, she is a pioneer there!!
Yebba out here being great too!! Her vocals are wild!!!!
Yes! She has a really nice essence about her music🙌🏽
Yes ma'am
First of all, I have no idea how I found this video but I'm glad I did. The detailed history lesson alone was an excellent setup for the topic. If I had not grow up with R&B, I would've been absolutely edified and brought up to speed with this video. Thank you.
I love your videos because I feel like you understand the nuances of music artistry and music as a sonic experience rather than just a song.
I would add Ari Lennox, Lianne Lahavas, Mahalia and Umi to your list of new school R&B gorls 📌
Thank you soo much 🙏🏽 and yes i love me some ari lennox and I’ve heard of mahalia before but imma listen to some more!
Camryn you are so entertaining, I love your banter on these topics. Thanks for the consistent uploads 🫶🏽
Okay I am going to argue refill by Elle varner because that was my grandma's favorite song. The rawness of it the fullness of the song and just the message. It fully encapsulates being young in the 2010s and wanting to fit in. It's what's lost now we don't have yearning
Elle Varner's first album is love
Can I get a REEEEEEEEEEFillllll?!
And it goes both ways, sometimes a white pop singer would make faithful attempts at r&b but would still be labeled “Pop”.
It kinda makes realise how arbitrary genre can be, and I think that’s what Beyonce was trying to say on Cowboy Carter. That album was very much a commentary on genre rather than a faithful attempt at Country.
I love how this channel is educational for music fans as much as its a place for silliness and discussion. I know a lot of the artists you mentioned but now I have some new recs. You need to make like an educational playlist 😂
I agree that some of the overproduction in RnB can make even talented singers sound boring.
Thank you endlessly!!☺️☺️ and you may just have a point regarding that🤔
Excited to watch this! I love your content. It's stuff im into and nobody i know wants to talk about. So thank you.
Yay! Thank you so much for tuning in😊😊 so happy I can have these conversations!
off topic currently watching your video, you are absolutely stunning and I can tell you actually put time into your videos. Thank you and congratulations on 73k.
Thank you so much!! This comment is so sweet 🩷
the lack of lyricism gets me, not just r&b but everything. every lyric is so basic now. it really bothers me with rap because lyricism is the whole point. even songs about sex, the lyrics used to be more carefully crafted and clever, in a way that made it feel more erotic because of the presentation. but now its blunt and gross, you dont get extra points for being nasty with no poetry 😭 i dont think everyone has to be an amazing lyricist, but when the vocals arent even making up for it? come on.
and on an unrelated note: thank you for touching on the "relatability" thing cause it's been bothering me for years 😒 not just with music, but everything. music, movies, art, people, its ridiculous. "i dont like this celebrity cause theyre not relatable," well no, theyre rich and famous and youre normal and normal?
love your videos, and i love the community you've built! its nice seeing normal people talk about music without being crazy.
Muni long is doing it!! Vocals, lyrics, arrangements, aesthetics and trendiness! 💯
Yeah she definitely has the it factor, I’m really like some of her new music too
Muni Long is like a female R. KELLY(Sorry) and has a natural pen game that matches her vocals well
We need to bring ballads back into r&b
Yes!! Yes!! Yes!!
It’s honestly been this way for a piping hot minute. That’s why, for me, FLO as a new girl group has been a breath of fresh air these past two years.

So glad this video was suggested for me!!!! Subscribed to you immediately 💜
I realize you can't possibly mention everyone in the video, so I thought I'd give them a mention in here 🫀
@@saadmars961 suggest listen to the Ivory Queen of Soul, R&B ~ Lady Teena Marie. Add her to your list .
@@QLo-jc5ok Thanks for the suggestion
Once again, you have knocked it out of the park, I love these last two videos and how you go in depth about the history of R&B. Mic the Snare has a few videos about The Music That Define The Decades series. I love would a video like that from you but about R&B from the 90s, 00s and 10s. I can see you pulling that off
I absolutely loved this video. Very educational and a lot of insight on my favorite gerne!
Thank you!! I’m really glad I leaned into the history. It is so important to
One of my ultimate favourite videos you have done!! Beautifully constructed and delivered from start to finish!! I enjoy your videos, continue doing amazing things!
A new artist that I listen to that you didn’t mention is Inayah Lamis 🥰
i know i have said this before but i will keep saying it, i love how well articulated your videos are
Thank youu☺️😊
I’m not even done, about 10 min in. And the amount of history, and preparation, and respect for the genre. Phew! As a musician currently working on branding, crafting my sound, and the direction I want to take my music, this is like a master class, and such beautiful confirmation that I’m headed in the right direction. The history speaks for itself. Bravo on all the hard work you put in to these videos. Only my second video and already a subscriber. Thank you for putting us on game! ❤
Nothing will ever top 90s R&B!!!!Love SZA tho.
Agree agreed agreed!!
Congrats on 70k subs! You deserve it and so so much more! ❤🎉
Thank you so much!!🩷🩷🩷
Loved the history lesson you gave so informative!
The Roof by Mariah Carey has to be one of my all time favourite songs ever. The lyricism, the vocals, all of it is just chefs kiss. RNB at its finest (to me anyway)
@@emilyc1905 it’s so crazy you mention that because it is one of my favorite songs as well🙌🏽 so beautifully crafted all the way around
Outstanding outline & history lesson. This video is much needed. Much success on future endeavors
Chloe is a perfect example. I love her voice but I need the instrumentals to match her vocals.
Only 1 min in and the editing already hittin
Glad you’re liking it!!!🤞🏽🤞🏽
@@CamrynSuzanne random one but would love a deep dive on minnie riperton, recently found out about lovin you and seen people saying she’s the queen of whistle tones.
Thank you so much for watching!❤️ this is probably one of my favs too because of all the conversations we are having in the comments
I’m so glad you mentioned FLO!! Now I’m waiting for a video on them LMAO
Thank you for the amazing quality of the video and the research! 🙌
Let’s hear it for Detroit! ❤ Awesome job on the editing, research and presentation! Btw, I agree with your mom. Sometimes I can’t name that voice with some of the new ladies.

Ohhh i’ve been WAITING for this one
Hoping you like it! I’ve been excited to do this one for a while
it's insane how quick you gained to 70k? i think i started watching before you even reached 20-30k? feel like a proud mum even tho we are of similar age 😅
Awe thank you! Yeah I’ve grown sooo much this year
I can’t believe I sit there and watch this whole video. Good shit you kept me captivated every minute.👏🏾
Wow thank you! I get nervous to make these really long videos because I’m not sure people will get bored but this is so reassuring🙌🏽
Amber Mark is my favorite female r&b artist right now ❤
She always get left out of the conversation, but she's a talent.
I’ll have go check her out!
I LOVE U MENTION ALINA BARAZ. She is soo underrated with the color of you and even urban floral which literally went platinum but nobody talks about how that album needs soo much praise. Those 2 albums are soo supreme
Yesss🙌🏽 she has some great stuff in her discography and is really slept on
I don’t agree with Jhene, her vocals aren’t appreciated because they aren’t dramatic.
Same for Normani she lost me when she dropped a sad R&B during the summer it flopped because of the timing.
Is it illegal to enunciate , bruhh you just made me scream 💀💀💀
