What a great clip. He had it all even then. He had the voice, the phrasing, the energy, the crowd participation even way back then. He perfected it over the years. What a shame LRB tried to tie him down, John needs the whole stage for his act, his energy and exuberance demand it. There is only one of him, and we love him.

The only thing good about LRB was Farnham, and they treated him like an outsider. Their loss!

@@crustydownunder No, John was never meant to be part of a band. He treated the guys like his backing band. I'm sure John didn't mean to get anyone offside, it's just how he is. The star of the show.

I've loved John since I was a small girl. His magnificent voice, his stage presence and his sense of humour. But there is something special that I haven't seen in anyone else. I'm still blown away by his talent and his big heart which comes through in all of his performances.

I totally agree with you. If I had been old enough I would have been there at festival Hall, but I was only 8-years-old and living in Adelaide otherwise my mum probably would have taken me to see him because she knew how much I loved him.
You're right. John has something but no other artist has. Aside from his amazing voice, he has charisma, a stage presence like no other, a wicked sense of humour, and the ability to wrap the audience around his little finger within the first few minutes. His smile is contagious and he has a way to make you believe he is singing just to you.
After all these years he can still make my heart skip a beat. My lips smile, and my eyes cry.❤😊😢

John is the best vocalist in the world. So versatile and a master of re interpretation. That version of Yesterday blew my mind.
And he evern reworked his own hit raindrops. So cool even getting the audience parricopation right back then
And thanks for difgging up this old clip and playing all of it. First time i have seen this since it was on TV back in the 70's

Haven't seen this clip before. Even then he could sing so many different genres...brilliantly. That version of raindrops was wonderful and the arrangement of Yesterday was absolutely breathtaking (hard to find superlatives with John). You're right he has it all & he's had it from the beginning. After that, no one should be surprised by his absolutely brilliant version of Help few decades or so later. I agree, he seems like your mate and hes up there because he has to sing, its part of him and he does it to give us all a great time. Lovely reaction, mate.

I can remember my dad not liking Johnny Farnham, this was when he was singing "Sadie" and "Underneath the Arches"; then around 1973/4, my wife and I took my dad to see John at a live performance. After that, he was hooked; the dynamics of live performances will win you over every time. The second time I saw John in concert, was for the original Whispering Jack concert; unfortunately my dad had passed away the year before, but it would've been interesting to know what he thought of John then. I think he would truly have loved the coming of age as John moved away from pop to adult entertainment.

@@aussierob3860 What a load of nonsense!! John Farnham regards himself as Australian no matter where he was born. There are many Millions of Australians who were born overseseas but regard themselves as Australians!! Being only a child when he arrived with his family, no doubt he did'nt realise that he wasn't a naturalised Australian, so had to go and get naturalised. I know of quite a few people in the same position. They just assumed that they were naturalised back then, even though their parents had been naturalised.. Now it is a different story, as far as I know and the children are included in the naturalisation process. John wasn't forced to do it, he was just unaware of the situation. Anyway, he is still Australia's favourite son!!

"I AM, YOU ARE, WE ARE AUSTRALIAN." In my mind it epitomises the very essence of Australia's past and the future!! I am sure that most countries in the world have experienced endless change due to the endless traumas and upheavals in countries and societies!! Hopefully, one day, we will All be able to live in Love and Peace!! God Bless!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜❤️

I found it surprising that this performance by John was done as part of the "Jamie Redfern in Concert" show. Jamie was a child star singer on the Young Talent Time TV show, who went on to be the King of Pop (like John) in 1974 and he was younger than John. Unfortunately, after he left the TV show and grew older his voice changed and his career came to an end. It seemed to be a common situation for child stars - one which John was fortunate enough to get through because of friends , talent, hard work and a certain amount of luck (see the recent documentary "Finding the Voice"). Tina Arena was another singing star from YTT who also managed to overcome the problems of being a successful child star.

Thanks Charlie, I hadn't seen that before. I think in that era we were mostly getting the "sanitised" tv performances and not so much live concerts on the television. That is why I'm so keen to hunt down the live performances in the early to mid '70's from the Perth Telethons.Telethon (it is still an annual event) is a 24 hour continuous live tv broadcast designed to collect donations for children's hospitals and medical research, and John was a regular. Back in the day.. the late night, early morning hours were particularly loose and crazy., with all sorts of happenings such as male strip teases and partical jokes. Some of the presenters/ performers had little to no sleep. Members of the public would ring up and promise to donate if a certain celebrity would take his shirt off for example. As a kid I fell in love with John from watching his singing performances as well as his general mucking around on set during Telethon. The way he swung that corded mic around was both terrifying and thrilling!
In the performance above it appears to me that the audience was not quite ready for him. His sheer talent and energy seemed to stun them. They raised their energy up to his by the end of the performance, with the audience participation. Which brings me to my next point. I watched a Queen documentary recently where Brian May (I think) was saying that they wrote "We will Rock you", specifically to capitalize on Freddie's stage craft and audience participation. It was portrayed as though they were the first to do this. That was 1977. Here we have our John doing precisely that in 1972! Yes, Feddie could make an audience do anything he wanted them to do, but I would say that John equals Freddie in this regard. AND John was using audience participation at least 5 years before Queen were!

Take a look at him a few years after this singing one minute every hour and I can’t dance to your music. So different him showing his rock and roll side even back then.

The signs say the jamie Redfern show, it wasn't John's show 😅 Jamie was a child star of the weekly tv entertainment show 'the young talent time' john was a guest as he was the King of Pop in Australia for about 5yrs in a row voted by the Australian public.

Such a natural showman wow this is so cool and yep born to do it!!!! So cool to see his earlier stuff, love this 60s 70s soul stuff, one reason why I loved his voice soo much he always had that little bit of soul to it, no matter what he was singing rock, Ballard's, its always under there, Not sure if you've seen him sing with LRB, little river band ??

I could listen to this all day. No other singer can equal John as a singer/entertainer. The only other singer that comes to mind is Sammy Davis Jr.

John Farnham is like a great bottle of scotch, it starts out great but let it age and it becomes perfect. 😁
He was born to sing and it just wasn't his music but also his truly Aussie personality that made him an Australian legend.
Always love your reactions and so happy that your delving into all eras of his music, proves that John Farnham, his voice and his music is timeless, this legacy is set for all time.
    👍👍👍❤️🇦🇺
