Yes, There's still a lot of confusion about digital multi-tracking with an analog mixers like these using current DAW software. So I thought I would share my knowledge and hope the following information clears things up. 1. Regardless of whether your analog mixer has "usb 2.0" or "3.0", all of these analog mixers with USB ultimately send digital L/R audio (Main out or Monitor out) to your DAW. They do NOT send multiple digital track data streams. Manufacturers are selling these analog mixers with USB, to unsophisticated buyers as "DAW USB interfaces". Which they are, provided you're satisfied with simple L/R digital data streams, not multiple digital tracks. For an analog mixer to send multiple digitized tracks, it would need to have a multi-channel digital soundcard inside the mixer. Most economical analog mixers don't have these. For that you would need to purchase a regular digital usb interface like focusrite, presones, etc. Another option on the big behringer 32, is to purchase the optional firewire card out for an extra $299. That will allow this big behringer to digital multitrack. 2. It is possible to send multiple digital tracks into your DAW with analog mixers like these, but you need to do this: A. Look at how many INSERT channels there are. On this mixer there are six, that's how many digital track data feeds it will be possible to send into your DAW. B. You will then need to install a PCI digital soundcard that supports MULTICHANNEL inputs, like the M-Audio delta 1010. That card had 10 dig inputs. You'll need to install the drivers, etc to make this card work on your computer. C. You will then need cables to go from each Insert channel to each digital input on the soundcard. Then make sure the card recognizes each input channel as audio. You will want to test each channel. D. Change the settings in your DAW so it "listens" to multichannel digital inputs from your soundcard. Set levels how you want and begin multitrack digital recording! -Sonny The Recording Engineer
Thanks for that post, it literally saved me from making a mistake. I'm using a Firewire interface with 10 inputs I can individually record on my computer, which is exactly what I'm using it for. But since my new computer has no Firewire, I'm looking for a USB option. Checked a couple interfaces and then came across the Xenyx devices from Behringer, and initially, it looked like they were a perfect match, and even better than an interface because they offer so much control. I'm still thinking about buying one, because even with only the main outs digitally available, they're still pretty good bang for the buck, especially when buying a used one. But it's good to know it's not gonna solve my main problem. Edit: the Korg Zero8 mixer would, as far as I remember, work... generally an amazing device, but it has so many issues with the touchscreen which ALWAYS stops working, there is no way someone buys a Zero8 and keeps using his touchscreen indefinitely. It WILL break, that's a fact, and it's also a fact that Korg couldn't care less about it. I wish there was that one perfect device which ticks all the boxes, but that's probably gonna stay a dream forever.
Fantastically helpful video! I just bought/upgraded to the X2442USB this week from an MX1604A and found the extra sliders, buttons, and knobs a bit daunting. The explanation of FX and sends was also a Godsend! It's nice to see that I can use my old effects alongside the onboard effects, and they're located right next to each other. I think I might also enjoy the subgroups a bit better than my old unit (I use a MIDI controller to control several keyboard combos). Once again, thanks for taking the time to break this all down for us. So much better than reading the near-useless manual and sitting through an exhaustive tutorial on sound mixing and control room setup.
I just wanted to say: thanks a lot for the full overview and explanation of all parts & areas and the time, that you shared with is. Very helpful (for me too)!
not sure if someone else has beaten me to it but.... the Main INS are Inserts that use a TRS y -cable to send the signal to an effects processor or something similar. same as the inserts on the channel strips. they use a 1/4" TRS plug with the send on the ring and the return on the tip (or vice-versa) and common ground on the shield. a insert cable looks like two mono 1/4" jacks to one stereo 1/4" jack. good review, thanks. im looking at gettting the QX2442usb which is almost identical except the built-in FX processor has a bigger display and more control over the effects.
I did purchase the desk and have to say I'm very pleased with the results .Now getting to grips with all the bells and whistles .I'll be using mainly for post production on video and music demo's for a talented bunch of grandchildren and their many musical friends your review made things a great deal easier and quicker to understand and I find myself coming back to look again . so thanks ,these reviews done as well as yours do make a difference, and for me are very worthwhile .
...and the sub groups arent stereo. the sub outs 5-8 are just extra sockets if you want to run a sub out to more than one amp or device. 1+5, 2+6, 3+7, 4+8 are linked but are definately mono
Main in L & R can be used to link 2 desks together as well and a main return for other processing/effects units to be linked straight to the main out control if memory serves me correctly, I mainly used it in the past to link 2 desks allowing one desk to control the main output of both.... no need to buy a larger desk for a few extra inputs when you can just link another desk. For convenience I prefer to link 2 desks that are rack mountable rather than have a desk that is too wide to mount in a rack
Thanks for your in-depth review of the Behringer X2442usb mixer. You've answered most of my questions. I presently have a Tascam M208 mixer that I've been using for years for remote radio broadcasting. The Tascam has been very reliable but I need more mixer channels and have been looking at several mixers, but keep coming back to the Behringer X2442usb because of physical size and similar routing as my Tascam. I treat my equipment well. My real concern is its reliability and you've sort of answered that in saying that you've been using your's 3 or so days a week for a year. A while ago I was talking with a Behringer sales person and when I asked him about the mixer's reliability he told me, "They're so inexpensive that if it quits you just replace it." Not what I wanted to hear! For live broadcast I need reliability. Yes, I've looked at Mackie, Midas, Yamaha, as well as others. I don't want a digital mixer. Price is not the issue, but reliability, flexibility, and physical size is an issue because I often have very limited space to work in. Can you tell me more about your opinion of the Behringer X2442usb mixer's reliability? Thanks, Burt
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I have been using this for some live gigs for a year or so. But you kinda get stuck in using it the simplest and safest way when you have a lot of people waiting for you, Nice to get some more knowledge of this unit.
Great review, thanks! I assume the reason the Aux returns are on the right side from the rear rather that the left with the sends is that all input circuitry is on the right side from the rear. Outs are on the left, inputs on the right.
Thank you for a great insight to this desk , considering purchase and your comments have been most helpful( will almost certainly purchase now . ) Appreciate the time taken to produce and upload . Kind regards . .
but thanks for making me test out some stuff right now , the FX out is stereo , the AUX and sub outs are mono ..i just sent the FX out from one mixer to ch.3 on the other and i can make the FX super thick now , these boards have so many possibilities , i already have 4 FX units connected to them ..
Thanks, great videos. I just got one of these to mix my drum kit. I have an 8 channel interface but I wanted something more tactile and easy to control for practice and live gigs. Our bands PA is limited on channels, so I will use this to make a submix of my drums and send a stereo mix to the main board. I suppose if I want to multitrack record with this I can send the direct outputs to my interface?
SO glad I got back to my fave mixer a Mackie. They are a damn workhorse. Not impressed with a behringer mixer at all. it was a joke, thin sounding amps and imputs. Mackie kicks ass.
Thanks man! And no on this mixer the inbuilt interface only takes out two channels (Left and Right master) So what i do is mix and EQ all of the drums on the mixer, then Do a master compression and EQ inside my DAW.
By the way, "MAIN INS" is explained in the manual as follows "MAIN INS(ERTS) (X2442USB only) These are the insert points for the main mix. In the signal path, they are post-main mix amp, but pre-main fader(s). Use them to insert, for example, a dynamic processor or graphic equalizer".
Hello Theodore, thank's for your videos ! I want to ask you a question, is it possible tu use the direct output, and still send the signal to the main mix ? Or to the effects ?
yes i think our (MAIN INS) insert straight to mains like the Phono 2track input on the top does .. ( FX OUT ) Fully Wet FX Out because we hear those internal fx out threw the Subs or mains normally but thats never Solo Full Wet FX u know . and the (AUX 3 fx) out doesnt send a out FX , you can use it as a normal AUX out i think .. and the sub outs are just sub 1 & 2 are doubled out of 5-6 .. sub 1,5 are the same Left Channel .. or what if each sub out is Stereo out like the Headphone out?
Hi, Brilliant video's explaining what does what on the this desk. Is there any chance you could demonstrate using the controls to use imputing sounds into some channels at the same time as monitoring or playing along to a backing track coming from a cd machine into the USB2 track inputs please. Also I have model QX2442USB, it's almost the same but yours came with side brackets and mine does not, could I get side brackets to fit on mine?
Thanks for the video, which I watched to get an answer to a question that's still on my mind: Would you say it's possible to route your inputs (flexibly) to the subgroups, while (permanently) have subgroups 1-8 out on the back connected to an 8-input A/D interface? I'm puzzled as to how you would route any inputs to subgroups 5-8. Because as I understand, all inputs can be routed to 1-2 (either stereo or panned to mono 1 or 2) or to 3-4. How about 5-8? I'd like to flexibly route my inputs to either subgroups mono 1 through 8 or stereo (synths!) 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. Can you (or anyone who knows this mixer) tell me if that's possible?
I'm not sure if you're still following this since it's so old? But I have a question for you I have the xenyx 2442/the 24 Tk.! s So there's plenty of tutorials and they're very helpful so thank you very much! When I plug my cable in from the desk into my Macintosh and I'm using let's say for example GarageBand - how do I know what channels it's going to return to? Because truth be told I build it as I go so I will do drums first then probably a rhythm guitar track then probably put a bass track on and then maybe add more guitars but it'll all be done one thing at a time so I don't necessarily need to have 24 outputs! My question is when you plug in your cable from the desk to the computer how do I know where the return is going to be? I'm assuming it's going to be in one of the auxiliary returns in which case I can assign them to a track? Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANKS AGAIN MATE 🛐💯☮️
So this desk will just show up as a 2 channel interface, it might refer to it as '2 track main L R' and then there's two red routing buttons near the headphone knob for routing the 2 track to the main LR buss of the console. So if you wanna record a mono guitar pan it left and you can use that, or with two mics pan them hard left and right to record two mono tracks at a time. Hope this helps, i havent seen this thing in years!
Hello now its 2018 and I'm considering buying this mixer... My Q is Is it still working after all this years???what is your opinion now?? Thank you so much for this review it's amazing a lot of info take care
vicadaja1 hey man, I don’t have this mixer any more, I gave it away after I upgraded to bigger consoles (I’ve got videos with large digital desks if you’re interested) I believe this desk is still being used at Glastonbury festival every year, and working perfectly. It never skipped a beat with me.
@@TheodoreMiller thank you so much for replying so fast thanks this information really makes me confident and I did check your videos on the other consoles they are amazing but they do look more expensive thank you very much again for the info take care my friend
Enjoyed the video. I have the X2442USB and I've been unable to record to GarageBand via USB. I am able to output from GarageBand via USB and play through board. Any hints that might help me?
what you do is great man!, thanks for the explanation. I have a question about the USB wire for the interface, does it work as a multi-channel mixer? or it just sends the instruments into one track in any recording program? I'm trying to record some drums and I want to do it using multi tracks but I can't do it at all. So the question is if I need to buy another interface or it is just about configuration. Thanks
So far, has this worked well when you've used the USB option? What software do you use with the X2442? What did you mean when you said that the audio is mapped to the min mix? Great video, very informative.
I have this mixer and it is a great tool for multi track recording. You can use the USB to record to your computer from the mains and then play back to the mains what you just recorded. IF you have a DAW, you can record into it, one track at a time, if you are a one man band. The best part that I've found is the direct outputs for the first eight tracks. I use my direct outs to record into the break out box of my recording setup. I have a 10 input-12 output recording unit that feeds in to my computer recording DAW. It works great for recording a drum kit with individual mics, mixing for best volume and EQ while recording on to eight separate tracks and then I can mix the kit afterwards, down into stereo, adjusting individual track volumes and EQ on my DAW. This gives me great power over how individual drums will sound in the final mix. This is a very useful mixer. It can be used for multi track recording as well as a live show. And, if you want to play canned music during breaks, you can use the USB for that, without disconnecting any of your other show inputs. I just use my laptop for that and play mp3s. Like the video says, this mixer has many different routing options. It's rare to find individual outputs on a mixer. These days, most are made for live use. But, with those individual outs, I have a nice little recording desk, too. How you use these routing options is pretty much up to you. This mixer was really worth the money I spent on it.
Nice videos!Didnt really understand IF I can use 3 aux sends for monitors och nr 4 for The FX or IF They work in pairs? Hope you understand what i mean?I only need one FX ( reverb ) for The singersThank you!
Can i use it for a small disco system of 4 dual bassbins 3000w and 4 tops 2000w without a separate amplifier, excuse me i am clueless about this stuff. All i know is i love music.I am not so much worried about inputs like guitars and drums because am not hoping to use it for live bands, maybe 2 mics will be enough.
What kind of stand do you have this sitting on for THIS video? Any stands that you would recommend for use on stage? By the way, I have the QX2442USB which is the same size as this model.... main dif's are the SFX module and wireless mikes.
I think he had the mixer sitting on his drum throne. Stands are available. With the rack mounts you can find stands that hold mixers and other audio gear for stage use. Check out online stores like Musician's Friend, Sweetwater, etc. I just Googled mixer stands and several nice options came up. Sweetwater has several for just over $100 each.
Hi Sir can yu pls tell me what tape of recording program I use to record me mixers from Behringe XENYX X2442 USB MIXER......And think yu for your video's
great video man, i know its been a while since you record this , but, if you still have this board can you try punching usb@control room and than run wires from your control room 1/4 inch out to an line input of the very same board? if this works, you should be able to feed usb sound from your computer to aux output for monitor. keep me posted if its working! (make shure to use TRS cables not TS(guitar patch chord) thx!
sorry to rehas a vid many years old but yours is the only one semi helpful.. Im looking to use this for live and studio.. so live i can use a traditional mix board and send to an amp ? for studio i can record a guitar track , bass track , then drums as a stereo track and then vocals and then mix those 4 tracks down or mix 3 tracks for all the instruments and then mix vocals to a single track?
nice video!! Just a question, how do you connect speakers for stage monitors on X2442USB? I have tried and for some reason its not working. I do I need special leads or am I missing something?
They do need to be powered mixers or you need an amp between the AUX outputs and the monitors. Per the manual: "The AUX SEND jack should be used when hooking up a monitor power amp or active monitor speaker system. The relevant aux path should be set pre-fader. " Does this help?
Thanks for your quick reply. (I'm using PC Windows7) To run my pre-recorded music (headphone jack out), it seems as easy to use one of the mic-in's, right? But I want to separate the three vocalists (mic1, mic2, mic3) and the music (mic4). I don't want to hear the music in the monitor. That's my biggest problem at the moment. Am I asking it to do something it can't?
These videos have been very helpful. I have a bit of an issue with using channels 13/14 & 15/16 (stereo inputs). I'm using a stereo cable out of my MAC's headphone jack into channel 15/16 (so 1/8 inch to ring & tip 1/4 inch). When I solo that channel I only get the left channel in the LED's about half the time. The other time I get both Left and Right in the meter. I can't seem to figure out why this happen intermittently. Anyone know or am I crazy?
I have a problem with a humlike noise when the 2442usb is turned on. It goes away in a few minutes. It shows in the effects LED. Any suggestions? Or a resource that might could advise?
Have you tried mix minus on this board, i have the same board but having problem setting up mix minus on adobe audition I will be thankful if you could help
You can do that without an external interface, you csn record everything coming through the desk into a stereo mix, the only thing that you cant do is record all the channels individually
In order to record each channel on it's own individual track, one would need to go from the direct out to an audio interface to pc, since the USB only sends the master mix, correct?
I use my direct outs to record into the break out box of my recording setup. I have a 10 input-12 output recording unit that feeds in to my computer recording DAW. It works great for recording a drum kit with individual mics, mixing for best volume and EQ while recording on to eight separate tracks and then I can mix the kit afterwards, down into stereo, adjusting individual track volumes and EQ on my DAW. Correct, but it is post eq, post fade, and post mute, which is not always ideal. If it is over eq'd, there is no way to really fix that in your computer. Ideal for recording is Pre-fade, pre-eq. The plug ins for today's DAWs do a much better job of EQing than the desk does anyhow. And, they never have issues with scratchy faders and pots.
While I've only gigged live with it a few times it's been working great for almost 10 yrs in home with full instrument set-up: Vocal/key1/key2/drums/Beat Buddy/guitar/bass. Anectdotal but it's been great for my use.
Hi Theo, this has been so helpful thanks! I just got my ub2442-fx pro out of storage having not used it for some time! The mixer lights up when I turn it on but there is no signal coming from the mic the mixer is totally unresponsive to the incoming signal ? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Cheers. Sorry meant to post on the main thread!!🥴
@@TheodoreMiller could it be the op amps I read somewhere where this mixer had issues with those? I have tried every channel there is no signal from any, they may need a clean I haven’t used it for about 8 yrs!!
I have this and we are using it for live sound. How do I get a monitor mix where I can boost individual vocals or channels in our monitors but not the mains?
Jamey Black assuming you have your monitors on aux send 1 and 2 (which is what I do ) you can adjust the amount of individual vocals, guitars, etc by using the little red knobs about halfway down each channel. just turn the red knob for aux send 1 up or down if you want more or less of it in monitor 1, turn the aux send knob 2 for monitor # 2. make sense?

But I have a question for you I have the xenyx 2442/the 24 Tk.! s
So there's plenty of tutorials and they're very helpful so thank you very much!
Foot Switch is for Tap Tempo
can make a video of the XENYX 24420USB REVIEW link to an amp and the stereo
Thank you for this video! Im considering a small desk and this was really helpful! Thanks!
Hello now its 2018 and I'm considering buying this mixer... My Q is Is it still working after all this years???what is your opinion now?? Thank you so much for this review it's amazing a lot of info take care
vicadaja1 hey man, I don’t have this mixer any more, I gave it away after I upgraded to bigger consoles (I’ve got videos with large digital desks if you’re interested)
I believe this desk is still being used at Glastonbury festival every year, and working perfectly.
You have the red "2TR/ USB to Main" button pressed. Un-select it and you will have audio going to computer to record but not coming back.
Can you help me when I try to record and I click on the. Inputs all it gives me is busses it won’t give me 1 or 2 am I doing something wrong
what you do is great man!, thanks for the explanation.
Thank you. I watched all three... very useful.
Thanks man :) And just the drums? or everything about it? :P
what do I need to do multi track from a 2442 xenyx. how you can help. thanks
I use my direct outs to record into the break out box of my recording
setup. I have a 10 input-12 output recording unit that feeds in to my
computer recording DAW. It works great for recording a drum kit with
individual mics, mixing for best volume and EQ while recording on to
eight separate tracks and then I can mix the kit afterwards, down into
stereo, adjusting individual track volumes and EQ on my DAW. This gives
me great power over how individual drums will sound in the final mix.
+Carl Hallblad you can use the aux's for whatever you want
Can i use it for a small disco system of 4 dual bassbins 3000w and 4 tops 2000w
without a separate amplifier, excuse me i am clueless about this
stuff. All i know is i love music.I am not so much worried about inputs
like guitars and drums because am not hoping to use it for live bands, maybe 2 mics will be enough.
The aux 3 & 4 are permanent post faders are not for usable for monitors, because the''ll be affected by the faders
Which Mixer did you finally upgrade to? Cheers!
Is there a way to get eq and effects to come out of the individual outs? They only seem to come through the stereo outs cheers.
Woah, nice review! Could you do one of your kit aswell?
Everything about it? 'Cause I'm looking to buy a Horizon but the Birch model:)
Thanks! Very helpful!
great review. why cant any of these boards offer 16 track built in 24/96 recording to sd card! grr.
Sweetwater has several for just over $100 each.
thank you so much lots of good info
Hi Sir can yu pls tell me what tape of recording program I use to record me mixers from Behringe XENYX X2442 USB MIXER......And think yu for your video's
Paul Henniker i recommend Reaper
@@TheodoreMiller thanks for the update
great video man, i know its been a while since you record this , but, if you still have this board can you try punching usb@control room and than run wires from your control room 1/4 inch out to an line input of the very same board? if this works, you should be able to feed usb sound from your computer to aux output for monitor. keep me posted if its working!
As long as you are using a DAW for the studio stuff, yes this will all work!
Can you use phantom power on one channel whilst having a channel not use it at the same time
Thanks very helpful on my purchase
nice video!!
So 8 direct out + 8 sub out, so if I root chanels 9 to 16 into the 4 sub, it’s basicly a 16 direct in/out mixers no ?
Thanks!
Thanks a lot man! that was very helpful
Are the direct out pre or post fader ?
Okay man, ill do that when i have a bit of spare time :)
thanks will be very helpful
Thanks man, i try to be as helpful as possible :)
why didnt i get rack mounts on mine?
Thanks for your quick reply. (I'm using PC Windows7) To run my pre-recorded music (headphone jack out), it seems as easy to use one of the mic-in's, right? But I want to separate the three vocalists (mic1, mic2, mic3) and the music (mic4). I don't want to hear the music in the monitor. That's my biggest problem at the moment. Am I asking it to do something it can't?
Which output are your monitors connected to?
Or a resource that might could advise?
possibly an earth fault?
The puzzle is it goes away in about 3 minutes. The quite as can be after that.
Have you tried mix minus on this board, i have the same board but having problem setting up mix minus on adobe audition I will be thankful if you could help
if I run the main out into a standalone interface, would I be able to record more that 2 channels at once into one stereo track?
You can do that without an external interface, you csn record everything coming through the desk into a stereo mix, the only thing that you cant do is record all the channels individually
In order to record each channel on it's own individual track, one would need to go from the direct out to an audio interface to pc, since the USB only sends the master mix, correct?
+Lucas Swets Correct
I use my direct outs to record into the break out box of my recording setup. I have a 10 input-12 output recording unit that feeds in to my computer recording DAW. It works great for recording a drum kit with individual mics, mixing for best volume and EQ while recording on to eight separate tracks and then I can mix the kit afterwards, down into stereo, adjusting individual track volumes and EQ on my DAW. This gives me great power over how individual drums will sound in the final mix.
Can you record each track separately
Please do know that these mixers are very low end, and break down routinely. Search in RUclips for "Noisy Behringer Xenyx2222usb Mixer"
While I've only gigged live with it a few times it's been working great for almost 10 yrs in home with full instrument set-up: Vocal/key1/key2/drums/Beat Buddy/guitar/bass. Anectdotal but it's been great for my use.
Multitrack recording with this ????
No, just 2track
thanks .helpfull info .
Is it possible to record realtime multitrack? Like a bass an guitar playing at the same time, but each with their specific track?
Yes, but only using the direct outputs
dammit =\
does it do multi track recording?
Recording from my DAW ( pro tools. ) I ment
Glad i could help :)
Wich kind of stand your standing the mixer ?
In this video its just resting on a drum stool, when i used to use this desk i would usually just put it on a tall flightcase.
@@trevormay7862 have you tried using all the different preamps? Maybe some contact cleaner in the gain pots would help?
@@TheodoreMiller could it be the op amps I read somewhere where this mixer had issues with those?
I have tried every channel there is no signal from any, they may need a clean I haven’t used it for about 8 yrs!!
@@trevormay7862 are you sure that the mic/cable are working?
Phantom power affects all XLR channels
I have this and we are using it for live sound. How do I get a monitor mix where I can boost individual vocals or channels in our monitors but not the mains?
Jamey Black assuming you have your monitors on aux send 1 and 2 (which is what I do ) you can adjust the amount of individual vocals, guitars, etc by using the little red knobs about halfway down each channel. just turn the red knob for aux send 1 up or down if you want more or less of it in monitor 1, turn the aux send knob 2 for monitor # 2. make sense?
+Tom Hayes ok. Do you need 2 seperate power amps then? One for mains and one for monitors? Thanks
