This is by far the BEST drum solo I ever heard. Because it is NOT a drum solo. It is a composition, a masterpiece of contemporary music, a "Fantasia for Drums", a real piece of art.
His entire clinic explained why he played what he did. It was an entire approach on how to build a solo, how to approach different motifs, how to build off of different ideas without just playing chops all over. How to build a story through your instrument, and bring everything right back to the beginning. If it was difficult to listen to, try watching again, and this time listening for the phrases he repeats, how he built and added onto those themes, and where they lead. It was an amazingly informative clinic he gave, and this solo was a culmination of everything he talked about
Dear commenters who find this solo weird or confusing. Think of this as an exploration of rhythmic possibilities. Dynamics, unusual combinations of sounds, the contrast between speed fills and rests. Sanchez has one of the best creative minds in the business. He rarely just hits something; his ideas are always part of a larger motif.
True and also rhythm and harmony are two sides of the same coin. You cannot play a melody without rhythm and whenever you play rhythm on something capable of producing tones like a drum set or flute or guitar you're making melody. This is an example of a musician who can play on his instrument unrestrained by preset patterns or drum beats or fills or licks. He's making melodies like a pianist or violinist would.
it's not exactly weird or chaotic, not by his standards. this is quite musical and doesn't need a very different perspective of musicality to enjoy its melodicity.
@@niftyszn9469 it has all the required elements of a good rhythm melody: emphasis of time and moderated repetition. if you don't enjoy this I doubt you understand percussion at all. you don't need to be very versed in music to enjoy this. This can be enjoyed in the same way a hip hop drum beat or a groove is enjoyed.
His work with Pat Metheny bands since early 90's is legend in drumming history. I'm so happy Pat chose this mexican drummer to play his compositions since 2 decades... Jazz drums hall of fame...

This is the best drum solo/composition that I have ever heard. In my opinion, Antonio Sánchez is the best drummer there is, if not for his insane technique, for his creativity and feel.
For those of you who don’t get Mr Sanchez’ drum solo, stop trying so hard to understand it and just take in the unorthodox art form of it, and just listen!
I'm a HARDCORE pAisTe Guy. BUT If anyone !!! Has made me think about purchasing a Zildjian it's THIS GUY. Not Steve Smith Not Buddy Rich But Antonio Sanchez. INSANELY IMPRESSIVE.
That's quite an exploration! Extremely musical all the way through. Lots of interesting sounds. Though I think Sanchez should add a couple set bongos or roto- toms just to round it out on the higher end of the scale.
this is story telling.... I love how the "story" went. I just wonder how he thinks about the "script" in his head.... this solo, like all stories go, has a structure(beginning, middle, and end). Did he played note per note? or did he just have a structure in mind and improvised "inside" every part. BTW, I think the story is a crime drama.. :-) someone got murdered!
He's telling a story. Now, some say its gibberish. But its a tone poem of sorts. Quiet and ethereal, epic and soaring. It's excellent, if a bit self indulgent. but what solo isn't? I saw him once at a clinic years ago. He was a little full of himself, at least I found him that way, but a fine drummer.
Ok cool one thing is a movie soundtrack and other is a drum solo in a drum festival. If he is trying to impluse another waves he got the liberty of do that. But he is reducing his bank account... Me quedo con Horacio Hernández... Siempre fue mi gallito de pelea...
Latin America's Mark Guiliana? Mark is out of this world, but when Antonio started to play drums, Mark wasn't even born. And I know Antonio is not "old" at all. Just saying. Not calling you out sir. Have a blessed day 🙏🏽

it's more like a song/ composition on drums, than blowing chops. Think of the "birdman" stuff. He also explained those approaches at drumeo, maybe it helps to get more understanding of his way of doing solos.

Antonio’s drumming is high art. Always a demonstration on the pushing the boundaries of limb independence
Yes I agree
You sound like a gay
True
Playing randomly and slowly = art lmao
BUZZ BUZZ, CLACK CLACK!
hahaha i died!
Ha ha!! Your post made me laugh out loud in a quiet room! Yeah... it's definitely his signature in this solo... but holy crap, what an awesome solo.
Gotdamit man. Hahahahaha
... TICK TICK

A true composition - both creative and inspiring.

It’s terrible
it's not exactly weird or chaotic, not by his standards. this is quite musical and doesn't need a very different perspective of musicality to enjoy its melodicity.
Just because he's "exploring" doesn't make it musical. This drum solo sounds like nothing and is boring

Very impressed with his sense of timing without a click.
Uno de los mejores solos de batería de la historia.. dinámica, rudimentos, musicalidad, virtuosismo.. una bestialidad
What a master.
Thank you Antonio for your beautiful music.
Love.
This may be the best Drum solo I’ve ever heard. Musicality and storytelling on point.
The many voices of Sanchez...love it.
A call and response by dynamics. the dimensions create colours.

Love it, honest creativity. Drums at its best.
Beautiful, truly beautiful MUSIC, ART, CREATION!
All expectations expire with this solo .
Unchartered magnificence .
Bless you Antonio .

I think his solos are wonderful. Very musical, flowing and very understandable. It is Sanchez.

Grande Antonio, mis respetos hno ! Saludos desde Duluth, GA.

I love this. Sounds like brainwaves. It would go behind a chase seen in movie. I love his themes and phrases.
It’s the shirt!! I knew it!!
Amazing!! He's technically brilliant
I checked him after watching Birdman and he is a absolute legend .❤️🙏
Hé covers IT ALL 👉🏼URBAN, LATIN, ROCK, FUNK,,,and then of course those DYNAMICS! One of best versatile drummers ever.
Fantastic, it's a universe.
Amazing drummer.
Colors of sound!
That was 9 and a half minutes of genius
stll love your drummning!!
No apto para bateristas convencionales. Me volo la peluca, todo a su tiempo, climas, matices, virtuosismo, musicalidad...👏👏👏
He's different. Make us think of new possibilities.
Super-sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just amazing!
I don’t think I have the mental capability to understand this solo
just burn one and listen too this awesome drumming -
I guess when you think you need 3 snare drums on your kit, you will understand.
Go check out his Drumeo presentation from last April. If you can follow form, that should make this very easy to grasp.
Buz buz clack clack= the "corus" /pre courser . Time thing
WOW!!! Amazing!
Like that setup
excelente desarrollo del solo... muy bueno!!!
Something tells me if Antonio was blindfolded he could find his way home no problemo ❤
he's telling a story.
Highest level!
His eyes are closed. He is IN the kit. incredible.
was thinking that too, how he was able to hit all the various parts without missing ever, unreal
Like a boss

You can do this with Paiste

He was playing a lot with other percussion elements before he joined Methany, but kinda stopped that
@@Spezifestos Sounds great regardless but yeah if it were me? I'd use some smaller drum sounds over multiple snare drums.
Musicalité !!!! Amazing

My brain broke. Wow, it's like inelegant poetry in some code. It goes from like 1-10 in a click
Sick Mars Volta audition tape. :)
Beautiful freestyle
Antonio playing chess and the rest of us are playing tiddly-winks.
Just like Benny Greb, he doesn’t let any part of the drums go to waste.
Chega ser mediúnico...THE BEST
Gênio!!!!!!
did he ever gets older? looks exactly like 13 Years ago😊
That's as good a solo as ever been played ...book it
Maestro Antonio! Orgullo mexicano! vaya técnica y musicalidad!
wow bravissimo

Is he using one of those pulse-metronome watches? (Right wrist)
Man scratched a cymbal with his stick for 20 seconds and everybody went crazy
For those who don’t “get” this ... you first have to think of the imaginary band playing around this!!!
A Master ..i'd love to know what Buddy Rich would have made of this
What drum sticks would this young man be using. Vic firth?
Genial!
Nasıl bir konu bütünlüğüdür bu bravo

🐐 🐐 🐐
he is good drummer
@Avedis Zildjian Zompany, the rightmost stack is not listed (the one with an oriental on top), as the zil-bel(?). What did Antonio use?:)
Per Grundtman and there’s some splash in there too
12” Oriental China Trash on top of a 15” K Custom Hybrid Trash Crash
When is 1 drummer but sounds like 20
Kkkkk oh yeah
❤️
Esses que deram deslike devem estar doentes da cabeça.
🎶👍🥁
Crisp ...firecracker ...like a machine gun
i can tell this guy’s been checking out Benny Greb!!!
excellent open drum sound .no effects or very very little.
That’s why he was with metheny!!!
😳💥🧠✌🏾🥁🎶
You really need to just listen to this without watching the video, then it makes a lot more sense.
😍😍😍😍😍😚😚😚😚😚💕❤💕❤💞❤💕
jaja impresionante. No me gusta como suenan los Toms, pero el solo ah sido hermoso.

It's actually the other way around
Not when I shift into maximum overstank.
🥱
Hmmm 🤔
This solo made me lose some braincells ngl
