lmfao!! exactly the same mate. Black swan tho is like piss and not very good if connections are not a tight tolerance. I prefer thicker solvent cement. ;)
I started watching your vids a while back to help with the plumbing on my bathroom refurb. Very useful at the time but now I watch just for the entertainment value. 😂..........keep up the good work and hold tight!
Thank you, you legend, boy do you make me chuckle! This video helped me solve a leaking Strap Boss which I found the glue to stick it had worn away. Doesn't look like it was etched at all for bonding, tut, tut, assuming sandpaper will do for the etching. Keep up the great videos, love em, hold tight!!
Hi, I've found your channel recently and this video helped me last Saturday when I DIYed replacement of 4cm blocked pipe with 5cm pipe which of course included changing the boss. There is one question which really bothers me and you surely must have addressed already, but couldn't find the answer below - what kind of soup? Thanks again for the helpful tutorial! 😉
Great video as usual - Searched everywhere for a strap on that will allow me to fit a 82 mm pipe to a 110 mm stack Is there such a thing ? or will I have to bodge it in some way.
Is this the wavin osma boss with osma boss adapter? I have one and it looks similar to yours and wanted to check 57mm is the correct hole size. Is the boss adapter you use with the rubber seal push fit so you can push your waste pipe in and not solvent weld it in? Holdin tight ..
Etching is less important than ensuring that all the surfaces to be fused are completely clean of oil or grease. The solvent weld "adhesive" works by dissolving the surface of the items being bonded, allowing them to mix together. It's not acting as a traditional adhesive.
Do you have a video on fitting the MCAlpine 22mm condensate pipe connector - Mechanical Boss Connector : Product Code - BOSSCONN-22mm? It's a fitting that needs an odd shape hole in the soil pipe. It says you can use the McAlpine fitting instructions as a template but what is the best way to cut the hole in plastic soil pipe? Do you need to use silicon sealer to prevent leakage? Any help would be really appreciated. Do I need any special tools?
Hi mate ...how long to first fix a 2 bed new build ..using multi layer uponor pipework ...all heating pipework all hot and colds to sink basin bath and shower plus drill through all joists ....one plumber and one good apprentice ....thanks James ...brilliant site ....Hold Tight
Great video cheers, my soil pipe is vented on the ridge of my roof with just a cover on it flat on the roof and my bathroom extractor vent is next to it. Im getting smells in my Bathroom? Any ideas?
Can you send this video to the 'plumber' who came and fit one of these to our waste pipe - looks like he used the wrong size as didnt clip/bolt the straps (they didnt meet round the pipe), used silicone to fix it to the pipe. Came home to utility room floor flooded when the silicone gave out a couple weeks later. Awesome
Oh yeah, couple of questions....1. who likes METAL? 😂 Seriously though, I didn't show the two types of boss because I'd shown it in a graphic at around 2:02
Enjoy my dearies! Bit of a random video today, but just adding it to the ENDLESS list of plumbing advice! Here's my Instagram: www.plumberparts.co.uk/social.php?social=Instagram I'll add a link to the drill arbor when I can find one online!
Would help having a link to the parts needed or saying clearly what they are so I can search myself. Having problems locating the Boss adaptor/reducer ?
I am adding a basin to a horizontal waste under a floor beside a joist so difficult to get access with a drill to make the hole and the ‘top’ you mention will be at 90degrres . Would it be better to cut out a section of the waste and use 2 joiners even though the wouldn’t be able to be pushed in fully ?
Done loads of DIY but this is a first for me. I'm putting in a new stack BUT I'm confused about how to get a 40mm pipe into the stack. I want it to go into the junction that has cut outs for additional pipes. I only could use a 52mm holesaw due to the plastic moulding so when I've tried to get a 40mm rubber boss adaptor in will it hell as go, even less hope of getting a 40mm pipe in that. I'm obs using the wrong thing. Any help!!!
any thoughts from experts regarding how high to put these on outside wall on garden side, i personally would not use this on outside wall where kids may accidentally touch these. i would use these above 1.6-2 meters +. once these are on and you have a leak its a nightmare to replace or fix
Seems likely you've already resolved your problem but here's my advice: First thing is to check the diameter of the pipe. Good chance it's 3½" which is not going to marry at all well with a boss for a standard 4" pipe Second thing is solvent weld is only for PVC and ABS. THIRD thing is I wouldn't recommend trying to glue a plastic fitting to a metal pipe because there will be differential thermal expansion and the joint will not be durable. If I were you I'd buy a McAlpine mechanical boss designed for a cast iron pipe. I've never actually used one but it looks sound in principle!
I haven't seen that type of of fitting before. To bad we can't use that, it looks like it could be easier that cutting a hubbed fitting into a tight spot where you can't move the pipe.
James I am "bossing" 36mm to soil stack but previous owner concreted most of the pipe and I only have a small gap where I've chipped away. I can easily drill the exposed pipe but I cannot use a strap as cannot get around the pipe. What kind of boss do I need if I cannot strap around the pipe?
Really you are supposed to use upvc solvent degreasing cleaner first before using the solvent cement. It etches and softens the surface prior to using the solvent cement.
Plumber from the states here... love your vids btw, but question: why do you all use those boss's to make a tee connection??? Were I'm from saddle type fittings are illegal (Kentucky, but my state code is really strict anyways, one example is we have to individually vent every fixture to a main vent stack that terminates above the roof, or even more... wet venting are absolutely not allowed anywhere in Kentucky state plumbing code), but even across the states everyone usually uses just uses solvent welded tee fittings.. what is the reasoning behind you using those instead of standard fittings, because it seems like much more work to use those boss's to me. Is it cheaper???
I’m changing the old metal waste sewage pipes running from toilet through the wall and out down along the wall to the man hole sewer, the 4inch old pipe running up the i like to replace with 6 inch pipe running up the wall , then I got to connect a four inch. That runs into the back of wall into bathroom , not rocket science , the problem is how do I get the old metal sewer pipe out that goes through wall into a connector that’s offset then into back of toilet , the pipe from toilet waste which is metal or clay is got all Cement and brick work ,do I chisel it out or just go square around the pipe and remove it that way removing some bricks aswel or is there a short cut , I don’t have to remove it but I want all plastic pipes from start to finish ! Plus it’s all Lime scaled up and it’s Yonkies old

What size was the holesaw bit? As far as I’m aware it’s 54mm but can’t find it online at all
57mm.
Can’t believe I actually watched how to install a boss. I do it nearly everyday!! 😂
lmfao!! exactly the same mate. Black swan tho is like piss and not very good if connections are not a tight tolerance. I prefer thicker solvent cement. ;)
Worth watching to the very end for the song alone. Brilliant. New DIY subscriber here (this video has just saved me £s and hours).

I've used sandpaper before, worked a treat, just be really sure to clear the debris of it as it creates a lot of dust which can mess up the bond.
Your sense of Sense of humor made to subscribe 🤣
Thanks!
Thank you for the advice watching this has helped me get round a problem I had
I love your sense of humor man xD Many thanks :)

On a Saturday morning when it's P@#$ING down with rain your videos make me laugh and brighter the day up 😂😂😂😂
Ahhh thanks man....I'm going for a run in it!
Need some plumbing done and wanted to DYI it, good job on explaining things but also keeping it hilarious. Thank you!
Always helpful and good laugh to watch your instructional videos, keep up the good work mate.
Brilliant video. Thank you.
Also just to check mate,is this 110mm soil pipe solvent weld pipe or pushfit?
Great video as usual - Searched everywhere for a strap on that will allow me to fit a 82 mm pipe to a 110 mm stack Is there such a thing ? or will I have to bodge it in some way.
Can you use these boss types with cast iron soil pipe? If not what should you use?

Correct my friend 👍
Does it matter if you use solvent weld or push fit pipe in to the boss?
Your comment about wiping your finger on the customer carpet cracked me up 🤣

What brand is that boss strap, looks a good quality.on screwfix you can only buy the push fit stuff...
Hi James, can i strap boss into a horizontal brown underfloor soil pipe ????, many thanks.
Can you send this video to the 'plumber' who came and fit one of these to our waste pipe - looks like he used the wrong size as didnt clip/bolt the straps (they didnt meet round the pipe), used silicone to fix it to the pipe. Can this be used underground for a patio drain. Cheers
Hi I'm hoping to relocate washing machine to garage is it best to use mechanical boss as soil pipe runs horizontal at low level. Cheers
Love your videos
Oh yeah, couple of questions....1. who likes METAL? 😂 Seriously though, I didn't show the two types of boss because I'd shown it in a graphic at around 2:02
Do you have to worry about moving the stack when changing/rotating a branch? Could it mess with the lead flashing on the roof?
have u tried plumbers mate? if so how do u compare it to ptfe tape
It seems only people in the UK can get these. Know of anyplace in Canada?
Enjoy my dearies! Bit of a random video today, but just adding it to the ENDLESS list of plumbing advice! Here's my Instagram: www.plumberparts.co.uk/social.php?social=Instagram I'll add a link to the drill arbor when I can find one online!

Hi mate, my strap boss is leaking which is solvent welded. Any advice please, can i put silicon around as i cant take the solvent glue off. Thanks

Completely Mad! :D Thank you, needed the pointers :)
Thanks for demonstration.
Bossed it 😎 thanks james
How do you Cap off this boss fitting if you no longer want to use this waste fitting?
You could leave a small piece of pipe in and put the mechanical cap on that.
@@steves1460
Thank you for your advice very helpful.
Is it worth etching the back of the boss flange too?
Give it a try if you think it helps!
Is the white waste pipe 4cm? Do they do a strap boss for 82mm waste? Thanks.
That quick change *arbor* is going to allow me an extra 5 seconds in the pub, boom!
Great video. Could I attach a shower waste to the boss strap?
Absolutely 👍 You've probably already done it but thought I'd reply for anyone else asking the same question 😀
Nice one mate.

11:45 :) you made my day
very helpful thanks. can you do a video showing how to drill out the T sectopn mouldings to take a 32mm pipe?
any thoughts from experts regarding how high to put these on outside wall on garden side, i personally would not use this on outside wall where kids may accidentally touch these. i would use these above 1.6-2 meters +. once these are on and you have a leak its a nightmare to replace or fix
do you need to do the etching/solvent weld onto a cast iron pipe? cheers . . in fact what would you do differently for cast iron pipe in general?
Seems likely you've already resolved your problem but here's my advice:
First thing is to check the diameter of the pipe. Good chance it's 3½" which is not going to marry at all well with a boss for a standard 4" pipe

Great video haha
Lovin it mate
Loved the video
Thanks dude!
What size Holesaw for a 40mm pipe ?
what happened to the power flushing vid you said you was going to do a few weeks ago? Or have i missed something lol
Does code allow this in US?
Can you get these for cendense pipes ?
Nice job James! Our plumbing code doesn't allow us to use them here in New York City.
I haven't seen that type of of fitting before. To bad we can't use that, it looks like it could be easier that cutting a hubbed fitting into a tight spot where you can't move the pipe.
10:50 my kids happened to walk in at that moment and said what are you watching, nothing just james licking a waste pipe!!!
Hey there! What size hole saw is that?
Can you do one in an existing pipe with loads of carrot in it?
What happens when the rubber seal deteriorates as they always do.
How can you replace it as it’s all been solvent glued!!!
have You got any more veto bags or your tech xl can you do a review on it now after a few months
James, are the veto bags worth the £170? Are they the dogs?
What DOES stop sink waste water going back into the toilet?
Here's how to fit a strap boss, so let me tell you all about soldering and my new tote bag...
Can these be installed underground and covered over ?
I’m a bit old skool but I honestly can’t see the difference that a good old brush in the everflux is not good enough
Really you are supposed to use upvc solvent degreasing cleaner first before using the solvent cement.
It etches and softens the surface prior to using the solvent cement.
Can you get these in 45 junctions? Laying these square junctions horizontal would seem a place for a blockage and disrupting the flow into the 100mm
Don’t think so, but search online and see!
Simply simply luvleh
After I connect the boss when can people start using the toilet again?
That “debris” joke took me way too long to clock onto 😂
Legend, save me buying 2 different drill bits
Pmsl 😂. Good video Jimmy. Loving the end sound track 👏
Cheers mate!!!
Gob on It! should be on your next t-shirt :")
Why etch it if its solvent?
Hello JAMES!!!
Plumber from the states here... love your vids btw, but question: why do you all use those boss's to make a tee connection??? Can you provide a US English translated version of this video? It’s exactly what I need doin’ in my basement vertical stack...
How do I cover it if I don’t need it anymore
Where did you get the hole saw? Mine are wank
Should be on BGT - the first comedy plumbing act !
What size is the drill bit?!
😂😂😂 Proper laughing at your comments in that video!!
Great work nice and clean, and I like the way yiu saying drilling my holes or drilling your hole 🤣 stop being sarcastic pal
Deburr the soil stack!
Great music, that's the way I take it slow!
What size holes do you use?
How can you remove a boss strap and seal the hole??
I’m changing the old metal waste sewage pipes running from toilet through the wall and out down along the wall to the man hole sewer, the 4inch old pipe running up the i like to replace with 6 inch pipe running up the wall , then I got to connect a four inch. Hold tight, James what make is the hole saw holder thing please
It’s called ‘Fast Cap’ and they’re the dogs bollocks mate!
plumberparts do they hold tight ? Lol
Actually Fast Cap is the manufacturer. Fast Cap call the product their Quick Mandrel. Have a look at this link: www.fastcap.com/product/quick-mandrel
Where can these be purchased from ? Cheers.
I don’t even need to install a boss adapter I just like watching this geeza
i see this video good insuition
Why didn’t you sand off the boss also?
Informative and well explained but I don’t think there’s a need to go off on a tangent every couple of minutes, doesn’t make for a comfortable watch
