Good evening! Thank you so much for over 4,600 subscribers! I'm very grateful for everybody's support, and I really hope you enjoy this walk around The Headland, also known as 'Old' Hartlepool :) As for some bonus info on The Headland, you'll notice that the area in front of Borough Hall is very open, with The Squircle, Town Square and Croft Gardens laid out before it. As we mentioned, Croft Gardens was built on an area called 'The Croft', which was among the narrowest and most densely-populated parts of medieval Hartlepool, and a far cry from the gorgeous gardens that stand there today!
To me being a born and bred headland monkey hanger the Squircle was a waste of money. Before the Squircle was the Tea gardens which was a LOT BETTER than the Crapquircle. They should have asked the people the of the headland what they thought before changing it for before they changed it. I could say brown envelopes spring to mind but i am to shy to say that.
I really enjoyed my walk around the Headland at about 3pm on a sunny autumn day. I saw about 3 people in about 1 hour. The place was like a ghost town, which is amazing as it's so lovely. I wonder why no one is out and about enjoying the scenery and fresh air??
My father was organist at St Hilda’s in the mid 1960s while I at the same time proved I had no voice to be a choir boy there. Over the years I have watched from afar the misfortunes of Hartlepool but have been pleased to see some of the progress in the last decade or two. Perhaps its time to make a visit.
I love these videos of the headland where i was born and bred in Penrith Street in a 2 up 2 down in 1955. Where the front room was kept for visitors. I used to sit in the kitchen listening to the Clitheroe kid on the radio. My mother and father used to tell me that no one would dare say a word while i was listening to the radio show or they would have been hell on. Sunday night was bath night in the old tin bath in the front of a sea coal fire.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - and I hope it did justice to the spectacular history of The Headland, a great place to walk as I'm sure you know well :)
I lived in West Hartleppol for 40 odd years and played for Hartlepool Rovers rugby team. The second team is called “The Heughers” which we pronounced “uffers”. The club badge features a monkey being hanged. To travel from West to Hartlepool you had to go over the border by driving under a railway bridge which is no longer there. Hartlepool did have its own railway station ,now gone, which was next to the docks.Another excellent walk and i have a bit more of its history.
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! And thank you for your comment, I didn't know about the station in Old Hartlepool - it's quite amazing how the focus of the town has shifted to West Hartlepool over the last century or so :)
My 4 grandparents (Loughborough, Watson, Wilson, Young) and some of their ancestors lived in Hartlepool, including Kate Loughborough and her family who ran a grocery shop in The Croft around 1880-90. I wish I could have seen her little face, the first time she saw that Elephant Rock was missing! Why did she never tell me about it! My great uncle, Bertie Young was a 13 yo fatality of the WWI bombardment. I still remember, 55 years ago, being dragged up from London to Hartlepool for many school holidays, in a very unreliable, smoky car, many hours each way. I visited the Headland 5 years ago, trying to visit places that I had 'found' in my family research.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - this was a really nice walk around The Headland on a calm (albeit cloudy) morning, a great time to explore the historical sites in peace :) Thank you very much for watching and for your very kind words!
You're welcome! And thank you very much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - Hartlepool's Headland certainly is a fascinating place :)
I can imagine! With all that history in the building and some delightful architecture around it must be a spectacular place to explore - I must go inside one day :) Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!

I bet they were great what with all that fish coming out of the sea just off The Headland! It's a lovely place indeed, and with so much history on every corner :) Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!
hi let walk yes hartlepool is steeped in history i once heard there were more millionaires hartlepool than many other towns,,i do like the headland ill be visiting soon, and yes i did enjoy the video and about another 4 very interesting i do say so.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - there are a lot of interesting places around the Hartlepool area, and some of the coastline around Horden/Peterlee/Seaham way really is spectacular :) Thank you very much for watching!
i have a soft spot for hartlepool im a middlesbrough lad born n bred(smoggie) and proud ive been to the headland a long time ago and after watching this film ill be up there again soon hartlepool has so much history i love going to northeast towns looking at old buildings taking some pictures finding historical placques etc and hartlepool has plenty of them ill be coming soon ,,can i ask any hartlepudlians if they can remember the pub on the dock called THE MIDDLESBROUGH,, i was 18 working with laggers stripping asbestos in 1978,,i dont think its there now ,,i do enjoy hartlepools history.
That's a wonderful way to put it all! Hartlepool is a thoroughly impressive town with some great history - particularly on The Headland, and conveniently within reaching distance of Middlesbrough for a proud Smoggie like yourself :) I hope you have a great time when you visit again - and thank you very much for watching this video!
@@jackwatsonepic626 Yes it was but is now called Gaietys bar after the people who bought it. The best pub for me was the Bridge hotel also in Northgate that sold Exhibition. Best thing i only lived a short stagger away after a stoppy back in it.
A good question - and one that I'm pretty sure I've been getting wrong for a long time! I normally pronounce it like the name 'Huw', but doing a bit of research tells me that it's actually pronounced 'Hyuff', so almost a combination between 'Huw' and 'Huff'! Thank you very much for watching and commenting as always - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :)
@@LetsWalkUK the Heugh Battery (in the start of this video) is pronounced “hew” so yes you’ve been getting it correct! I was just on the Headland on Sunday (visiting my mum, I’m from there), is a lovely place just to sit on the seafront with a coffee when it’s sunny.

I think these videos are just brilliant - no narration but just the subtitles works perfectly. Keep 'em coming!

Wonderful Took me back many years to when I lived here and I still miss it.
Great to see this. I no longer live in Hartlepool (moved to Canada 30-odd years ago) but I get back often to take regular walks around the Headland.

@@LetsWalkUK Correct ..it's pronounced Yuff . It's an Anglo Saxon term for a rocky promontory overlooking the sea.
