As a family we saw him live in the early 1980s with Bella Emberg. Just before he broke into TV. They were spontaneous, adlibbing with well known characters, and outright hysterical. No swearing or a bad word against anybody.

The guy was absolutely hysterical. No politics, no "art", he was just about making you laugh by any means necessary, and as ridiculous as his schtick sometimes was, you would have to have been made out of solid granite not to laugh. You seriously would.

I first saw him live with the Black Abbots in the late 1960's at a theatre club and shortly afterwards when he did a solo performance at a local restaurant that had a live band. He arrived after his show performance playing to a small audience for free. It was clear that he was a comic genius and he had a great career on TV. It is TV's loss because he has funny bones like several other great British Comedians like Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd, Les Dawson and Freddie Star to name a few. Sadly the modern generation is not allowed to laugh at life for fear of offending some people. My wife and I saw him as we crossed the road in the West End one afternoon and he saw us turn towards him. He smiled and waved appreciating that we recognised him. So natural. IHopefully he is happy away from the limelight. He brought so much joy to his audiences and fans.

I'd never heard of Russ when I visited London in 1983/4. Went to the theatre to see LITTLE ME where Russ Abbot played a never ending line-up of hysterical characters throughout the show. Amazing quick changes turned him from one zany character into another. I lost count. Imagine every crazy Mothy Python character ever invented and then some, brought to life in quick succession night after night. I was in stitches and absolutely flabbergasted by the comedic genius (and super-charged energy level) of this man. Total tour de force performance. Always in my memory.

One of my all time favourite TV characters. His humour was hilarious, clean, family-friendly, appealing to all ages and non-satirical. The BBC have done us all a disservice by aiming at the lowest common denominator in comedy, intellectual content and production standards. Much of their programming is no longer acceptable to large numbers of viewers. The comedy is often unfunny, crude, and offensive to many people, despite the Corporation's claims of being 'politically correct'.

In 1994 I did some renovation work on his piano in his house in Virginia Water. I returned his piano action and he took a little time to answer the door, there was a car backfiring and when he opened the door i said; "For God's sake let me in, there's some maniac shooting people out here" He laughed and some while later I asked him what he was working on next? He replied; "Well I've had this idea for a sketch where a piano tuner gets assassinated on someone's doorstep!" That's the sort of guy he is, as funny offstage as on it. I also remember him saying while I was there that he didn't really socialise that much with other celebrities in the profession, preferring to spend his free time with his family. So i'd say your video was spot on!

There was a sketch featuring the demise of Admiral Nelson. Abbot was handing out rifles when Nelson told him to "fetch Ladt Hamilton one." Abbot, of course, punched Lady Hamilton!

Did you see his pee sketch at the end of the programme? All he did was to stand as if he was peeing and there was the sound effect to go with it. But the fact that it lasted about 5-mins combined with his facial expressions throughout was so original and funny

Russ had 4 good friends who he worked with on his Madhouse show.
Dustin Gee, from York who worked as part of a comedy double act with good friend Les Dennis.
Dustin Gee, sadly died of cancer many years ago.
Bella Emberg, big rounded woman who was part of Abbot's shows was always full of fun and very enthusiastic.
Bella sadly died in more recent years.
Jeffrey Holland, comedy actor from the West Midlands known for shows like Hi-di-Hi.
And of course, Dustin Gee's friend Les Dennis who is from Merseyside.
Dennis is also a huge Liverpool fan, an actor and a presenter as well as being a very funny comedian and a long time friend of Abbot.
Formerly married to Amanda Holden, Dennis has worked on Coronation Street as a regular character and was probably the most popular of the hosts of Family Fortunes.

Russ Abbot wanted to do more serious acting.
He didn't disappear but instead reappeared in programmes like the ITV drama series September Song, before later going on to appear in the BBC comedy series Last of the Summer Wine.
Since then as far as I am aware he has retired.
