Prince actually used a picture of Dave Chapelle dressed as him on his single Breakfast can Wait. "In June 2014, Chappelle appeared on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show and discussed the use of his image on Prince's single: "That's a Prince judo move right there... You make fun of Prince in a sketch and he'll just use you in his album cover... What am I going to do-sue him for using a picture of me dressed up like him? … That's checkmate right there."

Charlie Murphy is Eddie Murphy's real brother, and the one telling the story. He was a comedian and was an actor on Chappelle's Show and used to tell these real stories about what used to happen hanging out with his brother and Rick James back in the 80's, so they decided to make them into skits, where Charlie is playing himself. They were massively popular and still stand up today.

  • @sonofthesea3298
    @sonofthesea3298 Год назад +3

Prince had a good reason for changing his name out with a symbol,as he had a falling out with the record label he was under at the time,so he pulled out of the record label, started his own record label where all his fellow artists and friends joined in under, while he fought his former record label over what was his own rightful copyrighted content. I believe they demanded that he could not release anymore content under his name while this went on,so he was like "fine, ill just change my name and re-produce my songs even better then you ever did". People that read the superficial medias, they only got the part of him having an ego and changing his name to be "even weirder then he already was".
The truth was that for him to continue creating music as the creative genius he was,he was forced to change his name while he fought his former record label legally,he had no choice.
I think mom said it best, she said "Prince is what you call eccentric, other then that he will come off as really modest, appreciative, loving and caring person if you just learn to know him beyond the scandal media". And yes, eccentric people do come off strange to some of us who arent all OUT THERE. And i think that comes with fame for some people,as there is quite a few eccentric artists still with us today. I did not always see eye to eye with Prince, especially regarding copyright and his own music. He banned his music videos, live performances etc from platforms like youtube, spotify etc. To me music videos is your bread and butter in regards to making people buy your music, buy tickets to your concerts etc. Music videos have always been intended for promotion purposes,so there i never understood why Prince got soo onesided.
But i guess that he was just abit tunnel visioned on the whole thing,he wanted everything to be bought, wich did come off odd to me. And im sure he thought that by having music videos on YT,someone would ripp the audio from the videos for free, and he did not like the thought of social media platforms cashing in on his content. I understood him better after his trouble with the record label.
And he had a brilliant idea for running a record label,he was fed up by seeing that record labels took way too much as theyr cut,off everything sold. So all the artists that joined his record label, got the absolute majority of the income for everything they sold. So he really wasnt all that strange as people thought he was.
He also had great humour,as he watched this story and could not stop laughing, where he proceeded to approach Dave Chapelle next time he spotted him at a sports event they both attended, and actually asked Dave "After the game, how about we head back to my place for some pancakes?",where he would crack Dave up with laughter. Prince publicly said that this whole story was true, many of his band members AND Eddie Murphy also went on record to verify this story as 100% true.

As a songwriter I feel like Prince was taking a stand for artists in what can be a very oppressive music industry. Whether people agree with what he did or not is fine but acting like he only changed his name to be eccentric is silly to me. I guess because the entertainment reporters were the ones spinning it that way and making it a joke instead of explaining the situation objectively.

I have also been a big fan of Prince. I eventually found out why he went by that symbol instead of a name. It had to do with getting out of a contract. He was signed into a contract as long as he went by his name. He asked his legal counsel if it held up if he changed his name, and they said it would. So, he came up with a way to go by no name at all, and it released him from that contract. Now, this is from memory, please seek legal counsel before you stop using your name. I know name use varies by state in the USA. Anyway, that’s my recollection. I find it interesting, partly that he just went ahead and designed a meaningful symbol and didn’t advertise his dispute with a record label

Prince was one of the best highschool basketball players in Minnesota back in the day. Ive heard people say he could of went to college for it and probably could of went pro.
He was also weird as a little kid according to the mother of a girl i used to date. They rode the same buss to school in grade school. She said he always used to kiss her as they got off the buss until she slapped him for it and then he always ran away when he would see her after that.

Prince changing his name to a symbol was pretty much just him screwing with his record label, whom he was angry with at the time. They had a trademark on his name.

I’m glad G is back! That being said, I mentioned reacting to Dave Chapel and Charlie Murphy a week or so ago, maybe you saw that or someone elses suggestion, either way I’m glad you did. Now Chapel plays Rick James next, you won’t regret it. Great reaction, I figured you’d get a kick out of it.
Have a great weekend family, cheers. 😎

Prince was actually on his high school’s basketball team, despite his stature he was was a really good player. i think it was Jimmy Fallon who said Prince requested to meet up with him, beat him in table tennis and then when he turned around he’d disappeared lol

Lived in the same town in Ohio as Chapelle for years. He’d go to the Kroger around midnight. When it caught on, and before we were all banned, we’d go and shout all his Charlie Murphy and Rick James quotes from the other side of the store. Random from the bread isle “Charlie Murphy!” Or “F- your couch!”

I heard once that Prince started calling himself "the artist formerly known as Prince" in defiance of his record label. That's how they were referenced in the sketchy contracts they offered him.

It wasn't ONLY blacks that dressed like that in the 80's is was every music artist in the 80s. It was just the 80's . White rock bands had big hair, wore eyeliner, shoulder pads, and make-up too. You would never catch a straight black man from any inner city or country now that I think about it, that would ever dress like that. They would be called gay and ridiculed. They only thing that leaked out in the community from Hollywood on the 80s was jheri curls. That's it.
Also, Prince was a ladies man; heels and all. You should react to some of his videos or live performances.
Also you guys are great. I love your reactions.
One more thing, prince changed his name to a symbol over a contract dispute with his record label. He also wrote slave on his check to defy his label as well. They basically owned him and his name. So he change it to something they didn't own or didn't even know how to pronounce. Lol! I thought it was genius. He took his name back once that contract was over.

My handle is a tribute to the crazy hair of the 80’s. It’s so ridiculously fun. I always smile when I see a mullet. Reminds me of my childhood. All of the hair styles from then are just experimental and fun!. My mom came home with tight curls after getting a perm at the salon. I just started crying. One of my earliest memories. 😂
