Can Confirm both "I'm Rick James, Bitch!" and "Cocaine's a helluva drug..." were both instantly in use throughout schoolyards for an entire generation after.
“Cocaine’s a helluva drug…” is still used today. The context for it isn’t that known but I can confirm it’s still used and still funny.
🤣🤣
Dont forget "Fuck yo couch!"
"Habitual line stepper" still gets used in my area too.
still part of my every day vocabulary
Technically Charlie Murphy was telling stories about his past at lunch break, Dave Chappelle loved them and showed the stories in his show. The Dave Chappelle show was unique no lie.
☝️
RIP Charlie Murphy 🙏🏿
I think the prince sketch was what got Charlie really famous
I bought a box set of all 3 seasons, plus the banned episodes like 10+ years ago, It was still sealed. I break it out and watch it at least a few times a year, such a classic show.
Prince confirmed it too
"He's a habitual line-stepper."
Great line
so funny!! 😂😂
Habitually….🤣
HABITUALLY!!!

RIP Rick James and Charlie Murphy
and Eddie Murphy's couch.
“I’m Rick James bitch!” was a gwillion percent more popular than A-A-Ron could ever dream of being
And “cocaine’s a hell of a drug”
"cocaines a helluva drug" and "fuck yo couch" were also real big
Sometimes, when I do something stupid, I apologize by saying "I'm sorry Charlie Murphy. It was an accident. I was having too much fun".
@@voz3704 I do hope you then present the stickiest of the icky
ha and F yo couch..I literally didn't evevn know that was from this haha. those 3 sayings are so big..the brits are about 15 years late eh ha
This one ended about 3 minutes early. In the end the real Rick James explains how he truly loves Charlie Murphy and how they’re still friends today. Btw, both Rick James and Charlie Murphy passed away a few years ago.
It cut a lot. "The milk's gone bad".
Charlie passed a few years ago. Rick has been dead 17 years now
@@rockypowers365 isn't it 2 parts?
They cut a couple diff scenes. The slap scene too.. All the youtube versions of chappelle show has parts missing. Cuz comedy central wants you to pay for their app or buy the dvd to see the whole thing
I was thinking the same thing, but it's technically another segment... Part 2.
There still another part to that story...
Dave said he showed this episode to Eddie Murphy before it aired and he watched it silent, and when it was over all he said was.... "The couch was red"😂😂😂
And he said he (Rick James), was wearing Capizios, not boots!🤗🙌🥃
Yeah what did the hand say to the face “slap” and the he smashed Rick head into the bar

"I'm Rick James Bitch" and "Cocaine Is A Hell Of A Drug" are still used regularly today.
Fuck yo couch was a thing too
Definitely, Fuck Yo couch absolutely huge.
“What did 5 fingers say to the face?
SLAP.”
@@erinlynette7323 Take that Brother Darkness!
And "habitual line-stepper."
I absolutely love it towards the end
"Rick needs help...."
"Psssh we just gave him some help. We whupped his fucking ass" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
"what am I gunna do about my legs Eddie Murphy!?!"
@@zachrichardson5581your as cold as ice....
“What am I gonna do about my legsss charlie Murphyyy” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Black magic! Darkness!!😂😂
Fun fact: Eddie Murphy and Rick James have have a song together called "Party all the time"
not just a song, that shit hit #2 and is still played in clubs today
I actually like that song!
It was really Eddie song.
Yup, I remember that cut when it came our back in spring of '86. I was a junior in high school then. It was off Eddie Murphy's debut CD So Happy. Rick James co-wrote the song and produced the LP
It still gets requested in clubs now and then today
Chapelle’s Show became instantly quotable. I mean instantly. The next day at school (I was a junior when it first aired) it was immediately part of the lexicon. Witnessing that show become a cultural icon was one of the coolest things I saw growing up. It was like Nirvana or something like that. Became a part of the American milieu instantly.
I can confirm, I was in hs when these skits debuted.
"I'm Rick James Bitch" was a thing followed by "WHAT AM I GON DO BOUT MUH LEGS"
Rick James was a different breed. Criminally underrated musician his music is incredible!!!
Prince made an album where he used a pic of Dave Chappelle playing him with a plate of pancakes. 🤣
Ya gotta love that! Prince, was a good sport for sure!
"Habitual line stepper" is the line that has actually lasted longer, people still use that for people that always line step.
For people who dont know Eddie Murphy in the1980s had a large entourage of people who hung around with him Most of them were his family and friends that worked for him. Charlie was Eddies security , His brother Vernon was his security Eddies cousin "Big Larry" was also his security. Eddies Uncle Ray was always with them .
I was in college when that aired. Me and my boy would always call out in lab "Charlie Murphy" and the response was always "Darknesses" it was so random, we'd always have people cracking up. We really pissed the profs off when we'd yell "I'm rick james bitch".
Can confirm kids back in the day did indeed quote "I'm Rick James bitch"
Still*
I was a senior when this came out and you wouldn’t believe how many “I’m Rick James, Bitch!!” We’d hear down the hallways of school
"That's the best one yet, innit?" - Daz *responding to every Chappelle skit* 🤣
Seeing you guys react and find out in real time that either Charlie is Eddie's brother, or that these are real stories that really happened, is a gem! R.I.P CHARLIE MURPHY!!
damn rip charley murphy .. on the dvd you can get the extended version .. charlie murphy tells a 30 minute story .. it’s fukin hilarious
"Morons" and "Darryl Staley" were my favorite
@@amcdanielman ya mooran
When you stopped the video right before "Cocaine's a hell of a drug" i screamed "NOOOOOOOOOO" but then you brought it a few seconds back and i sighed of relief hahaha 🤣🤣🤣
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING LMAOO
Me toooooo!
😂😂
😂🤣😂
Dave has a talent for pausing at the worst times
Rick is an habitual line-stepper. I love that line and will remember it when needed.
It sucks that they cut out the last story with Rick James that was on Chappelle's show, because the last part coined another popular saying in schools at the time "What did the five fingers say to the face?"
Slap
thats how my first school fight started. Dude ended up being my best friend for years after lmao
Must be a guy thing. Several of my best friendships started with conflict. I'm guessing it's a respect thing. Guys respect other guys willing to fight.
@@MrVvulf that or we were just rugged since we were the last of the crack epidemic kids 😂. I don't know if you guys had this where you were, but when I was in middle school, we had something called dummy slaps, where if one of your friends said something stupid, all of you would take turns slapping the back of their hands
lolz
Charlie Murphy was a writer for the show, that's how they knew the Stories
The sight of his dead legs dragging always kills me haha
I remember Bill Burr and other comics saying that they practically forced Charlie to eventually do Stand Up, because he was so funny.
Charlie Murphy, god rest his soul, was the best story teller man. He's got another one where he tells a story about a friend of theirs that was a nuisance while drunk. Captivating sh*t.
i still use the term "Habitual linestepper" to this day xD Charlie's a legend
I have seen that sketch at least 20 times but I still laughed until my face hurt.
I never laughed so hard as I did to that segment. It’s was apex brilliant comedy then and is apex brilliant comedy now. RIP Charlie Murphy and Rick James, and thanks for this legendary comic moment. Cheers, guys!!!
Office Blokes = Office GOATs
Did you make the Sammy Davis Jr wax sculpture in your thumbnail? that’s cool
@@mobiusbelts3607 no sir it’s Mekhi Phifer stressed out smoking a ciggy lol
"I'm Rick James, bitch!" was so popular Chappelle has this whole bit in one of his specials about how people would randomly come up and say it to me, in public, in front of his family. It's a longer bit that's hilarious
Now timeless classic stories. RIP Charlie and Rick 🙏🏾
Charlie Murphy was also ex military & started out doing security for his brother. He’s a legit tough guy.
I heard that he was a military vet, Mr. McMillan. I think Air Force??
I remember seeing him in a ScyFy channel supernatural horror flick called Unearthed years ago. It was a scarily good movie. He played a dude named Frank driving a car for someone to deliver cross-country
This shows the odd nature of fame. Rick James was famous as a musician in his time, but not many would remember him today if not for a comedian telling crazy stories about him much later.
I know, right?? It made him famous or infamous all over again depending on one's P.O.V. about him🤣
No one that was around when RJ burst onto the scene, and throughout his career, will ever forget him...'the man wasn't no joke', who else could have introduced themselves to the world with A song as funky as "You and I"...lyricist, arranger, conductor, producer, and more, he was "The Stone City Band". And none of the artists out here now can touch him...not 1 of them...these new artists, they're good at what they do, relatively speaking...but none of them can stand and shout in defiance to the world: "I'm Rick James, bitch!!!"
@@JuneBaby01 He was The Man back in his heyday, Mr. Hill. Rick James had his own dynamic and aura in spades
@throwaway Lol😂 Really, sir?? First I've heard on this allegory
I was in high school when this came out. For months after this aired “I’m Rick James bitch” could be heard echoing throughout the hallways at any given time. You’re right about that
That was "Cold blooded" lol. Great reaction boys 👍🏿🙏🏿
That’s not the whole story. There’s probably a part 2 to it! Glad y’all were able to react to it
I remember a Dave Chappelle interview where he said it got so bad that he' was at Disney World with his wife and kids and people would come up and scream "I'm Rick James Bitch!" to his face. He said it was partially incidents like that that made him go on a such a long hiatus .
The "I'm Rick James" line actually originated from an appearance at the BET Awards on the BET (Black Entertainment Television) network. James was receiving a lifetime achievement award and ended his acceptance speech with, "And to the woman in the back who didn't know me, I'm Rick James, Bitch!"
Edit: Enough. I misremembered the chronology because I'm old and probably saw the episode in reruns. I'll leave the original comment for the replies.
I believe that was AFTER Chappelle’s Show aired.
It was definitely after. That episode led to Rick's resurgence and renewed popularity, and him saying it at the awards he was copying the show.
That is not true that phase was already popping before the bet awards as you can check the time stamp when this episode actually aired.rick surprised everyone when he used it at the bet awards which made it even more cooler
You have to be young. That was already known which is why everybody reacted the way they did at the bet awards. That wasn't even close to when it became popular 🤦♀️
AAAHHHH CMON you guys gotta see “what did the 5 fingers say to the face” I’m mad that’s where the video ended😭😭
the guy on the right his reaction, when rick james says "nice place n***a" Gold.
Chapelle wasn’t heard of when these stories happened. Charlie Murphy was part of Chapelle Show which is how Dave heard these stories.
I know right?! Why is there so much confusion about how these stories were simply told to Dave Chapelle, by Charlie Murphy who experienced them, back in the day? Dave’s fame came much later.
Dave Chapelle was a little kid when these stories happened in the 1980s
These are true stories too. I met charlie Murphy at his show, shook his hand and got an autographed book. He's shorter but scarier irl. RIP G. He,like Patrice was reaching the peak before he died
I was in a bar a week after this skit came out, and when "Superfreak" came on over the jukebox, spontaneously every in the bar said "I'm Rick James Bitch!".
Can confirm, when this came out you couldn't go an hour without hearing somebody holler out "I'm Rick James bitch"
Edit: Y'all gotta watch part 2
Hands down one of the funniest skits to ever air on television. 🤣
When he punched him in the face, and said, " Cold Blooded " (in reference to one of his hit songs...lol...I was rollin'....lol
Sooooo not surprised this has over 74k views... Chappelle's Best!!!... "Chahley Murphayyy!!!" *Bammm* "Unityyyyy!" 🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Charlie Murphy was a cast member of the Chappelle Show and he would tell Chappelle, Neal Brennan, Donell Rawlings and the rest of the writers/cast these stories, so they made sketches out of them.
I love the references of Eddie Murphy's stand up comedy show "Delirious" and Rick James song"You're as cold as ice"😂😂❤️
"F*#k your couch" was what everybody in my high school said when this came out
I have a few family members who worked with Rick James as sound engineers in the '80s,and they both said he was one of the nicest guys ever.☺️
I've been saying "I'm Rick James" since I was like 15. This sketch was the funniest thing I had ever seen up to that age.
I love how Charlie makes a point to "elevate" his brother. Even after Eddie had become the hugest star in the world, here's his big brother, letting you know that Eddie is "a lot more compassionate," or that Eddie didn't fuck around with the party scene. And then it makes me just so fuckin SAD, because Charlie's not around anymore to be his little brother's biggest supporter.
There's another true Hollywood Story from Charlie Murphy regarding a guy (whose name I will not reveal, but you can read Charlie's lips when he's telling the story) who got shit-faced drunk and forced his way into Eddie's home late one night. There's another story about Charlie and his crew lining up for hot dogs/franks outside of a club. And I don't know why we never see it, but there's a portion of Charlie's Rick James stories where he's hanging out at Rick's house all weekend, everyone's partying non-stop, and Rick got on the house intercom to announce that none of the women there were to have sex with Charlie Murphy, and they would be fired if they did.
OH! And there was a story about Charlie and Eddie and Uncle Ray and the whole gang going out to a restaurant, and Darryl Stingley was there, and he started talking some shit. So Charlie had to go over there and straighten him out. I haven't seen THAT story since it aired.
There's another one of charlie Murphy's true Hollywood stories out there where Rick James is behind the bar at "The China Club". It's hilarious as well😂😂🤣😆
also the "higgar family"
You missed the best part. The finale! “What do the five fingers say to the face? Slap!”
I remember living in the barracks in Alaska when this show was on, everyone walked around saying that to each other. Everyone either watched Chappelle Show or South Park or both in the Barracks.
There is a third section to this…. features the GREATEST SLAP IN THE HISTORY OF COMEDY lol
I salute you blokes! I love the channel and your Chapelle reactions. RIP Charlie Murphy, he was a great addition to Chapelles' show and is missed. Keep up the good reactions my friends!!
OMG YES!!! You guys finally did it! Possibly the greatest skit in sketch show history. Dave Chappelle is the GOAT!
I wonder why youtube doesn't have the ending to this skit, the last part of the story is the best part of this skit
I literally have to watch this once a week. One of my favorite bits, and one of my favorite reactions. Much love from St. George, UT, USA
Chappelle wasn't around back then. These stories are from the early to mid 80's. Charlie Murphy was part of the Chappelle show cast, and he would tell these wild stories, then Dave came up with the idea of doing them as sketches. I agree, the Rick James story definitely trumps the Prince story 😆
IMO Dave Chappell's best special is called " kill'n em softly" every bit in that set is 100% hilarious
I can confirm me and my friends used to walk around middle school saying “I’m Rick James bitch” and “fuck yo couch” allllll the time lol
I never forget when Rick James said that to a young lady back stage at the BET Awards.Thats how that saying became popular. She asked someone who he was? That pissed him off that she didnt know who he was. So when he got out on stage for an award he says " Yeah Im Rick James Bitch"! The audiance was shocked because they didnt know what had happened. Then everyone started to laugh.lol That was the talk of the town the next day.And I guess the rest is history.I may be missing a small bit of it but this is pretty much what happened 🤣🤣
Yesss exactly what we asked for. Thank you guys
The Prince skit was so real, Prince actually used the shot of Dave dressed as him with the plate of pancakes for the cover of Breakfast Can Wait.
These Charlie Murphy stories are 100% true. Eddie Murphy did an interview with Jimmy Fallon. It was funny as hell
"I'm Rick James bitch!" Was huge in the states for years.
These depictions came about because Charlie Murphy was working on the show and would often tell these crazy stories during lunch times. Dave decided that they had to heard and who better to tell them than the man himself. Charlie lived a crazy life that's for sure!
Love some Charlie. Rest easy bro. For anyone who doesn't know, Charlie did martial arts for years and was even his brother"s body guard for some years. Think he mentioned it in the other skit. He also talked about it in an interview I watched. That's why that kick he did was so fluid.
You guys have to react to The Playa Haters ball skit. It will make you cry laughing.
Now if you would excuse me, I got to go home and put some water in buck nasty mammas dish…😂😂
Good react, gents!! As others have said, there's one more portion to this story which is cut from the RUclips version and I hope you guys have had a chance to watch it.
2 Years on but just an FYI: according to one of Charlie Murphy's stand up sets - the whole reason Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories became a segment, was because he'd be telling Chappelle and the people on the show these actual stories. And they'd all be laughing, hard. Then after a particular story Chappelle said: "Hey, we should make this into a sketch". Charlie's initial reaction was: "Sketch? Motherf***er this is my life, the f*** you mean a 'sketch'?!" Then Chappelle helped him flesh it out and Charlie Murphy realised: "My life is a sketch"
Every time i watch this and Charlie Murphy says "wrong, wrong". I almost die laughing.
R.I.P. Charlie Murphy. Darkness!!
7:32 OMG that dude on the far right white shirt his laughter is too contagious, my eyes are watery no ROFL! XD
the saddest part, is prince, rick james and charlie murphy are gone now ..
People used to say im rick james bitch CONSTANTLY when this came out. i was only a little kid but i remember all the hs kids and college kids saying it cuz my uncle was that age at the time. RIP to Rick James and the GOAT Charlie Murphy
Yall are the GOATS. This was the skit I been waiting on. Such a classic episode. 🔥🔥🔥
RIP Charlie Murphy
Dude… Charlie Murphy’s is one of those guys who you hear crazy stories about but it’s all true. I think he’s next on the list of guys you guys need to take a deep dive on. He’s from the age of the Patrice O’Neal’s and Bill burrs of the world. He came up around the same time they did. Everyone has nothing but great stories about him. Truly one of the most under appreciated comics of our time imo.
RIP Charlie Murphy. “ I’m Rick James, bitch” and “cocaine is a helleva drug” are still in rotation. These are classic lines. Also, Dave Chappelle is like a generation younger than Rick James, Eddie and Charlie Murphy.
charlie was in a good number movies himself. his first role was in "harlem knights", along side his brother and the legendary richard pryor.
Now ya gotta do the 2nd half the China club story
I wasn't big on Rick James, but he was one of a kind, and a good musician...was just wild as hell.. that I'm Rick James bitch started when Rick got the Legend award at the BET awards...some girl that was working backstage didn't know who Rick was and he came out there and accepted the award...and said some young girl in the back didn't know who I was... I'm Rick James bitch....and the crowd erupted...yes he was something else
The level of "Slap, I'm Rick James" in high school when this aired was off the charts.
So charlie murphy use to hang out with chappelle and during breaks they would listen to charlie talk about tons of wild stories from when eddie was at the top of his popularity. Like eddie wasn't just the best comedian, he was like the first major black comedian to be at the top, he had entourage from all realms of the planet. Religious, sports, politics all from the black side of america. charlie hung out with some amazing people in america's histroy.
Richard Pryor was pretty famous, as well --
But, did have plenty of issues 😔
@@yankeerepairs true, but I feel like he wasn't accepted as eddie was by the world in general. Never felt like he was as big of a star as he should of been.
Whent to a club and had an argument with Rick James and crew about a booth close to the dance floor/ stage that we took before them. He was willing to compromise. We worked it out and shared three booths. He bought drinks, we bought drinks. It was historic for us.
Ah Rick James being from my hometown Buffalo NY made this clip extra legendary there. But to clarify, this would have been long before Dave's career took off. But he knows the stories because Charlie was a close friend and colleague.
Was waiting for this one! The best Chappelle ever!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Charlie Murphy was a writer on The Chappelle Show. He used to tell these stories onset to Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr who was also a writer on the show. Dave convinced Charlie to tell 2 of his stories for the show. His story from the Joe Rogan show about Mike Tyson wrestling his pet tiger is a another great story.
I can’t find any source citing Bill as a writer.
Charlie Murphy is not only Eddie Murphy's brother but also his Bodyguard...everywhere Eddie went. Met n party.. charlie was there too
Thank you guys. Charlie's stories were the greatest.
When this came out we were at a friend's house watching it. One of my friends got in a fight about a week ago (rip to my buddy) the dude he had a fight with stomped on his face and left a filla print on him. We laughed our asses off 😂😂
This is Dave Chappelle in the videos - but Charlie Murphy and Rick James .. that's true interviews ! ! Rick James was a Legend 😂😂😂😂
Right around that time (when Charlie was telling these stories) some friends of mine went to see him doing stand-up (or telling stories). The opening comic? Bill Burr.
Prince put out a single and he used a photo of Dave as him for the cover. "Breakfast Can Wait" is the title.
