Both Prince and Eddie Murphy confirmed this story. He was actually a remarkable basketball player through high school especially for his height, but music was his love.
Yep, he confirmed it in an interview years before he died and told the story how he played pretty good basketball in high school. Even Prince got a good laugh out of it during the interview.
Yep, and I got to walk on that court at Paisley Park just last weekend. Apparently serving pancakes was a regular thing to close out all-night parties there.
Not only did Prince confirm this story (although he says it wasn't so much that he was great, just that Charlie Murphy sucked that badly), but he also used the picture of Chapelle dressed as him serving pancakes as an album cover for his single, "Breakfast Can Wait". RIP to Prince, Charlie Murphy, and Rick James.
@@travisspaulding2222 In June 2014, Chappelle appeared on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show and discussed the use of his image on Prince's single: "That's a Prince judo move right there. … You make fun of Prince in a sketch and he'll just use you in his album cover. … What am I going to do - sue him for using a picture of me dressed up like him? … That's checkmate right there." - from wikipedia.
I remember when this first aired. My father doesn't laugh at anything, but he chuckled a few times during this. That's like a rapturous ovation in normal circumstances.
I’m from Minnesota. My husbands older cousin played against Prince in high school basketball and he confirmed that Prince was an exceptional basketball player.
Growing up in the Midwest, I always wanted to hang outside Paisley Park and get into one of Prince's epic parties. Thanks for doing this one!! Prince rocked out "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" at a George Harrison tribute. He played with members of Traveling Wilburys. Definitely worth checking out!
Please watch Charlie Murphys true Hollywood stories with Rick James next I love that this is 100% true Even better Chappelle holding the plate of pancakes as prince was the cover of Prince's album
@@loriparks8657 And it was solid gold...chains! Some of my favorite bits were when he said "...like aaa lot. But that don't mean anything. There's a lot of black people in Ferguson, Missouri. He's super dope!
You young fellas are cool AF!! I appreciate yall bringing back the Old Skool ! Y’all remind me of my homies back in the 80’s and 90’s. Keep it up yall!
Prince was one of the realest niggas in Hollywood, he is beloved to this day for a reason. Every detail of Charlie's story is verified to be 100% true.
The best parts of this story is that 1, it’s been confirmed by both Eddie Murphy and Prince and 2, Prince used the image of Dave Chappelle dressed as Prince holding pancakes as the album cover for his single “Breakfast Can Wait”
Chappelle show is no joke one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. When it was on I would stay awake until 1 am when i was in high school. I laughed until I cryed every time no cap
The Prince skit is one of the funniest ever. Especially for white moms. I've never seen my mom and aunts laugh so hard. (They are huge prince fans) Charlie skit is my favorite. Do it next.
Dave Chappelle has said that if you support him, boycott Chappelle's Show. He said don't watch it because those various organizations that are still streaming the show are stealing his work. Miss the show but love Dave. Keep keepin it real.
Here's a Prince story back in the early 80's I worked at a Headshop/Record store in Minneapolis and Prince was friends with the owner and would stop in once in a while. Now flash forward 25 years my late father became good friends with Larry Graham from "Sly and the Family Stone" Thru Larry my parents became friends with Prince. I called my Mom one day and asked what they had been up to she said "Well last weekend we went to Paisley Park for a private party and Prince put on a show" I was like WTF? Sure enough a week later I went to my parents house and my Dad had a video of him and my Mom (The two whitest people on earth) on stage dancing with Prince and Larry. I thought I had a good Prince story up until Mom and Dad one upped me.
Watching Brandon crackin up cracked me up lol I laughed at the same exact shit when I first seen this on The Chappelle Show. I seen a live interview with Prince and he was asked about this and he said it's 100% true. It really happened.
My mom went to school in Minnesota for a lil bit but said Prince was a good basketball player. I looked him up and at only 5’4 he made 1st team all metro in St Paul/Minneapolis area.
Prince in real life released a single, "Breakfast can Wait" in 2013 or 2014. And the CD cover for it was Dave Chapelle from this skit. Still dressed as younger Prince, holding that plate of pancakes. Just internet search it and you'll find the pic.
Poor Prince was scouted to go pro, but he was too short for the NBA. So glad he was, I don't know what we would have done without him in the music industry!
Prince was a maniac competitor. There are stories of him challenging people to ping pong, pool, all kinds of stuff. And he would show up and talk shit and beat everyone and laugh in their face for it. They told a bunch of stories on Jimmy Fallon about it after he died. Apparently he just loved to compete in all kinds of games and was fiercely competitive.
Yea I remember seeing this episode and was like wait, lemme find out prince could really hoop. Quick Google search pulled up him on thr squad in HS.
Mickey Free said this is true also. Look it up... he's on RUclips saying it happened
Yep, and I got to walk on that court at Paisley Park just last weekend. Apparently serving pancakes was a regular thing to close out all-night parties there.
Micki Free did too on VLAD TV

The interview when Chapelle talks about it is hilarious. "That's check-mate." lol
Prince win all rounds 😅😅
