I will also upvote the UBR stock for tall people. I am 6’5” and have a long neck. The UBR is the only stock besides the A2 that actually has a cheek weld for me. All other sliding stocks leave my face resting on the metal stock extension tube. UBR just feels great to me.
Owning a PRS stock for a PTR-91, and loving it, it feels like it was specifically made for more oddball rifles that originally had a stock that wasn't in-line with the bore (G3/HK91 and FAL) or maybe just 308 in general, and they've just pigeon holed it for ar-15's as well so they can sell more units
I was seriously considering a PRS for my PTR-91. Ultimately, I settled on an HK21 stock because I was also able to find a G3/SG1 cheek piece that I plan to have fitted to it. Another plus is that with the rifle buffer fitted, the HK21 stock is barely heavier than the original rifle version.
@@christopherreed4723 There's definitely a trade off; I actually preferred having more weight because it felt better for me, but adding a pound or so to your already very heavy gun might not be everyone's cup of tea
@UNATCO Agent That was exactly the goal I had/have with the PTR-91. Given its base weight of 9.5 lbs, it's very easy to get up to bench rest rifle weights when setting it up as a DMR.
The main point of the UBR is the ability to adjust length of pull without moving/removing your cheek-weld anchor point. For precision shooting this is a must. Almost all other adjustable AR stocks create a big hole where your face goes when you extend the length of pull. If you look at the rigs of the top shooters in service rifle competition almost all are using a UBR for that exact reason. Great for RECCE, SDM, or wherever you need high precision from an AR.
This is correct....I build mine as long range toys....the ubr is solid and when trying to shoot 1k yards with small frame ARs....stock wobble is a thing
@@brandenj576 THANK YOU for mentioning beard hair. All the short stocks would let my beard get pinched between the buffer tube and the stock the rip when I shoot. Fucking annoying when I'm trying to larp fast or during a match.
If you are setting up a precision AR, you are probably using a magnified optic that will require a height-adjustable cheek piece. The UBR doesn't have one. And, you don't shoot a rifle with a magnified optic NOTCH, so there is no reason for your face to be that close to the receiver. The UBR is a terrible stock for a precision gun for these 2 reasons. I can see that Hop has a strong bias towards carbines and "dynamic shooting." The CTR makes a lot of sense in this role. But, for a precision rifle, the PRS and PRS lite are better stocks. Yes, they are heavy. Yes, they have a long LOP. Neither are detriments to a rifle set up for precision as opposed to dynamic shooting in a plate carrier.
@@haroldlee4037 Height-adjustable cheek pieces don’t work on ARs because of the charging handle. You have to instead use an optic mount that places the optic centerline at the proper height for the shooter. Most of us shooting service rifle competition find that a mount with a 1.3” to 1.4” centerline height is perfect. Most common mounts are 1.5” (too tall). BTW, iron-sight height on the AR is about 1.35” above the rail (varies with elevation adjustment). Common 1.5” mounts are too tall for most for precision shooting. They’re better suited to CQB.
@@messinger123 The PRS and PRS light stocks are LITERALLY built to incorporate adjustable cheek height in an AR platform rifle (as is the RISR from Larue, and the MBR stocks from LuthAR- among others). "Perfect height" is relative to face structure, and those with thin faces and "high cheek bones" may need additional height. And, if you are putting a scope with a 50+ mm objective on a rifle, a low mount won't necessarily clear the hand guard. I'm reminded that my use case is not everyone's use case. But, to say that one is objectively better than the other is either sarcasm, trolling, or grossly myopic. Here is a rifle I’m- very- familiar with, which employs a Magpul PRS stock, and the cheek riser certainly does not interfere with the charging handle. ruclips.net/video/-_e82JHnYzU/видео.html
I used the ACS because I was a grenadier and my unit forced us to keep our M320s mounted on our M4s. I chose the ACS because it made firing grenades a little more comfortable and because it seemed one of the most durable of the collapsing stocks available at the time.
I've owned the SL, the MOE Rifle, and the SL-K. They're in the proper order in your list. The SL-K for a bigger dude just doesn't distribute recoil or feel well; the MOE rifle stock is nice, but the adjustment from the SL stock is still more useful for safe storage. What, I finally had something reasonably pertinent to say, sue me.
It's very interesting to see other perspectives. I chose a UBR specifically for my AR-10 DMR since it's a little more heavy for balance, yet maintains a static cheek weld and collapses for transport. Also, I actually store replacement batteries in there for my scope and pistol sight. It also has an integrated QD cup which isn't the greatest but has been working quite well so far.
i got two ACS's when I didn't know any better. Now they sit in a bag somewhere. Not sure what hop is on about with storing batteries. I was using it for TUMS.
It seems like it's tailor made for like an 11.5 or 12.5 SBR, something that's a little too big to justify a PDW stock, but something you still want to keep kinda compact.
I enjoy my Fab Defense (Israeli Magpul) GL-CORE stocks both in the mini, but preferably in the larger format. Popular with Russian SOF on their modified AKs. Good weight, build quality, included QD sling points, tight with no rattle and an optional cheek riser. Which although not needed on ARs it can be nice to have on buffer tube stock non-AR type rifles. It feels like a worthy competitor to the Magpul CTR. I like and use them both, but for whatever reason Fab Defense doesn't have the same market penetration in the US.
@@TheHouseAlwaysWins-xs8zd their back up iron sights are also quite good. Check them out if your looking for cheaper bius than Magpul Mbus Pro but still quality. And they dont need any tools for regulation.
I love the UBR Gen 2 and I will die on this hill. Solid as fuck, A5 length buffer tube included, no rattle or movement on the cheek area, pre installed anti rotational QD cups, super easy install with no need to stake a castle nut or anything like that. Makes builds even easier and I have no major gripes with it lol. Gen 1 was kinda ass though, with all the exposed screws and extra weight. I'll give you that.
I just run a B5 enhanced sopmod stock, it's pretty nice. I don't use any of the battery tubes on it, I just like the cheekweld it offers. What are your thoughts on the B5 sopmod, hop? Edit: Ah, you mentioned the bravo, suppose the sopmod enhanced would rank similarly then
I would check out the ACS-L, it offers a better cheekweld than a standard stock, but it’s less bulky than the battery option (like your sopmod/ standard ACS). It’s a nice middle ground imo and allows for easier use with a plate carrier.
I like the B5 Enhanced Sopmod, but it is one of the heavier options out there. I do put extra CR123s in it, and it doesn't rattle. I wish the Enhanced model had an angled buttpad like the Bravo though. The straight one just feels weird unless I'm hunched over the gun.
To each his own, I love both my ACS and UBRs. I have an UBR on an AR10 SASS its heavy but so is an AR10. ACS has great cheek feel. I like the wide cheek area. The storage door thing shouldn't even be an issue. You can remove them.
STR has a bigger shelf on the bottom for a rear bag, an arguably better cheek weld (based on face shape), and can fully close on an A5 buffer tube. I like it for those reasons the most.
Agreed, I don't even use the storage compartments of the SL-S, but the wider profile/cheekweld of it lines up perfect for me with sight line. It's not terribly heavy either, maybe a couple ounces more than an SL. After years of testing different stocks, I put one on all my AR's heavy and light, and it is the best geometry for getting on target fast (for me).
I will say, for someone who prefers B5 and Vltor stuff, Magpul does make some good stuff too. Only ones I'd go for though are the CTR and the MOE-SL tbh
The str is literally a ctr with a bigger cheek weld and more storage that makes use of the bigger cheek weld. Magpuls website literally says it’s a ctr with larger cheek weld. Decent list but missed on that one
My two favorites are the MOE SL-K and the UBR Gen 2. The straight buttpad and clipped toe on them just works for me. Especially the SL-K, it's made for my shoulder pocket
SL-K is definitely my favorite. The SL stock is too clunky. I was able to put a QD attachment point on my SL-K stock without any issues. Not sure what the problem is...
Yeah that was confusing to me too. It does increase the cost, but it isn't in a weird location and is easy to attach. This reviewer seems to think with this emotions and not facts.
The SL-K has footman's loop that can accept the M-Lok QD sling mount. The attraction to it for me is the smaller toe of the stock; never understood why the SL stock had such a long toe.
I think the STR was a little unfairly placed. It’s basically a CTR with a larger cheek weld that’s actually pretty comfortable and the storage doesn’t have to be utilized. It only fits AAs so I don’t use it anyways. But I have a hard time deciding CTR or STR on different ARs
I have an ACS stock. Yes, that was a mistake. I use the little door compartment to hold glass wipes and that's it. I used to keep CR123's in the tubes until I realized all I was doing was murdering them in heat & cold for no reason. (Pro tip, I stuffed a piece of pluck foam in the bottom to keep the batteries from rattling). Gave up on that, but I haven't been assed enough to spend more money to change the stock. I have an SL on my 5.45 AK. No complaints.
One potential advantage of the storage stocks is the wider but sloped cheek rest could, for some people, be more comfortable. You don't have to use the storage tubes to benefit from them.
An added benefit of the CTR and SL stocks is you can buy Arisaka bag riders and 90-degree buttpad addons for those two models, which is useful for SPR precision shooter guys.
As niche specific as the PRS stock is, I think it should be higher because it does the job so well that it's the standard stock used for almost every DMR style build from budget home builds up to factory $3,000 builds. The PRS stock also has a squishier softer stickier butt pad than the B5 that is also competing in the same market space for nearly the same price.
SL all the way. Recently switched from the BCM gunfighter to the SL. SL is perfect. SL-K is just a slightly smaller version of the SL and actually is pretty great for your smaller frame larpers like your wife or girlfriend you don’t have.
CTR, ACS and ACS-L are my go-to stocks. I also like Mission First Tactical's stocks, mainly their lightweight model. MFT stocks are the tightest of ANY stocks right out the gate. I have yet to try Magpul's SL series of buttstocks, but that will be remedied here, real soon!👍
@@BCarnes be advised: the ACS & ACS-L were primarily made for longer than standard m4 buffer tubes, specifically A5 length buffer tubes. The storage and QD point locations were an afterthought. I personally don't have a problem with the QD point and location, it keeps the attachment hard points away from my shoulder. I don't mind it as much as everyone else. As a matter of fact, the ACS-L is my overall #1 favorite stock and for many reasons others overlook, and my use for them is pretty straight forward.
I love these videos from you, hop. There are so many options to choose from out there. It's nice to have someone with generally good opinions compare them.
I went with the ACS on my latest LR-308, I find it provides a better cheek-weld than the CTR... The storage compartment on mine holds cleaning patches & a plastic jag, an unintended novelty when I purchased it.
I have the MOE fixed carbine stock on my light carbine, and I love it to bits. It has a perfect length of pull for me and its comfortable against my shoulder while shooting
Well, technically Brownells makes reproduction CAR-15 stocks that fit on a standard buffer tube for like $20 Not the most comfortable, but it's really lightweight and offers pretty good places to loop a sling through
They BCM mod0 has been my favorite stock for a while now so if you care to know my reasons: It has a great profile for people with wide square heads like myself and actually allows for a decently heads up shooting position (slightly better than the CTR for me), It's the lightest stock that isn't fragile or rattly, but the primary reason for me, it has anti-rotational qd slots built in which is important to me when shooting in a plate carrier. One of the main things that messed with my shooting while I was active was my sling sliding behind my stock preventing me from getting enough contact with my shoulder to keep it as stable as I could without a sling in the way slowing down my follow up shots. We experimented with tape and paracord to try to get the right blend of range of movement without it sliding behind the buttpad but the BCM does that out of the box with an MS4. The CTR has that issue too although not quite as bad as an M4 stock. At work all our rifles have CTRs which are my second favorite stock but I get around that issue since we use the baseplate mount for our slings (MS3 gen2) anyways and usually in a single point configuration while actually shooting.
The millennial in me delighted at seeing a tier list regardless of content. I’m all aboard for the Hop Tier Shitpost Series. However you have committed crimes for your disregard for B5 and support of the fixed MOE
The STR got snow balled. It's essentially a CTR with more cheek weld and a good qd mount. You don't have to store shit. That cheek weld alone brings the STR to A status.
Also for anyone that has an issue with the slightly wobble that the CTR has - just put a little duct tape on the buffer tube. That tiny amount prevents the wobbling and takes 30 seconds.
I like the VLTOR EMOD. I have it on 3 carbines. I don't carry batteries. I do carry a firing pin, an extractor, maybe a bolt, cam pin, a few pins & springs, gas rings, blood clotting powder (which I have used). Adds a few ounces. Not going to war any time soon but I do LARP in the woods.
Another vote here for the MFT. under 6 ounces, comfortable, cheap, sling swivel included. Never had one break on me, most of my rifles wear them. I will say on a big AR308, I will go with something like a B5 or CTR.
Love my STR lol. It has the fat body for solid cheek weld even using a riser, the look and latch of the CTR to solve the rattle problem, and with a little earplug in each the 4 CR123s I keep in it are always available when my shit dies at the range and my dumbass didn't pack batteries. Plus, the surface area on the top gave me a place to put a tiddy sticker which makes my gun 38.4% more lethal.
The SL line is my favorite and go-to for an AR stock. I have the SL-S on my rifle and keep batteries in it, I'd rather have than have not. (Rattle can be solved with a few foam earplugs we probably all have lying around.) And I run the SL-K on my smaller systems and it keeps the whole package compact. The SL-M looks weird on anything but the smallest of systems, especially when SIG keeps slapping them on the back of their full-length Spear systems.
I've never understood the MOE stock. It has always been a slightly cheaper CTR, but is demonstrably worse than a ctr in every way. Also, the CTR only rattles if you get the wrong stock for your buffer tube and/or you buffer tube is out of spec.
I said this on your community post already, but I do really enjoy my UBR on my rifle build. It’s on an aero ambi lower with a WWSD-2017 styled upper. With my light ok the end and a loaded magazine the rifle balances nicely and the rock solid feel of it plus the solid cheekweld is really nice. And it can open up to longer than I’ll probably ever need.
I bought the PRS Lite stock for a bolt action .308 rifle that took AR pistol grips and stocks, and with just how low the faux buffer tube was to make room for the bolt, the ability to get a nice and tall cheek riser out of it to be able to reach my scope makes a huge difference. But I can see how it would make very little sense on an AR, since it isn't really adjustable beyond the cheek riser.
I honestly like the SL-S more than any of the others. I find the leaf springs of the SL series keep the stock tighter and rattle less over time than the friction lock of the CTR. I also find the extra cheek weld more useful for me over the regular SL. Plus the extra weight keeps the rifle more balanced. I don’t even use the battery storage.
UBRs work on heavier rifles. I have one on my 18" precision / 3 gun AR15 and it balances the gun well. I also run another on my suppressed 300 black out which would be front heavy with a lighter stock. The UBR is rattle free and the adjustment is very positive. On my lighter ARs however, I have the STR mainly because I love the cheek weld. I don't use the storage compartments either.
Pistol grips next! And for the people that complain about the stock rattle or has a bit of wiggle room even with the friction fit clamp, just a bit of electrical tape works. Also love that the CTR can take a cheek riser

Am I having a stroke? What the hell is that first sentence?
This is the only correct answer

My lawyer will be filing come monday.
My SL-K exists on a shelf. I bought it, put it on once, and took it off and bought a CTR.
How's the CTR been for you? I'm considering getting one.
i got two ACS's when I didn't know any better. Now they sit in a bag somewhere. Not sure what hop is on about with storing batteries. I was using it for TUMS.
The SL-K has taken care of me on an AK. Goes for the simple approach. Just add a QD sling point.
Bcm stocks are my favorite. I love how tight they lock up, and I don’t mind the QD attachment point placement that most complain about.
I only wish it was longer for covering the buffer tube. Always rips my facial hair out.
@@burnett665 the ACS is longer, I use it for that reason plus some storage.

@@riflemanm16a2 I definitely have to go down a position with the SOPMOD compared to say a CTR due to the flat butt.
14:24 says B5 Bravo is grade B, BCM is grade C
To each his own, I love both my ACS and UBRs. I have an UBR on an AR10 SASS its heavy but so is an AR10. ACS has great cheek feel. I like the wide cheek area. The storage door thing shouldn't even be an issue. You can remove them.
STR has a bigger shelf on the bottom for a rear bag, an arguably better cheek weld (based on face shape), and can fully close on an A5 buffer tube. I like it for those reasons the most.
The large cheek weld area on the SL-S stock makes it the best. Battery storage is also nice if your gun is front heavy.

Moe sl is my favorite
The B5 system is superior for sure.
I just don't care about the rattle on the MOE stock. It goes in. It goes out. It's a triangle. That's all I need.
I don't keep batteries in mine but I like the cheek feel of those with storage on the sides.
My favorite Magpul product is the quart of thread locker that comes on every screw from them.
Love my fixed carbine stock. So criminally underrated
SL-K is a great bang for the buck while still being small and light.

Thanks Hop
The "not financial advice" gave me a good laugh at the end of an informative video.
The SL series (any edition) are the absolute best available on the market. Super underrated
I like the storage stocks but mostly for the cheek width, having a place to store my angel dust on the rifle is just an added bonus

One potential advantage of the storage stocks is the wider but sloped cheek rest could, for some people, be more comfortable. You don't have to use the storage tubes to benefit from them.
This video is absolutely gold. Within the first 3 minutes and you’re 100% on the money
Thank for taking time to put this video together. Based on your recommendation , I purchased the CTR.
Love the tier list!
I run SL-K rn due to smaller body frame
An added benefit of the CTR and SL stocks is you can buy Arisaka bag riders and 90-degree buttpad addons for those two models, which is useful for SPR precision shooter guys.
Oh no. When are we getting Hop shorts featuring Socko?
As niche specific as the PRS stock is, I think it should be higher because it does the job so well that it's the standard stock used for almost every DMR style build from budget home builds up to factory $3,000 builds. The PRS stock also has a squishier softer stickier butt pad than the B5 that is also competing in the same market space for nearly the same price.
SL all the way. Recently switched from the BCM gunfighter to the SL. SL is perfect. SL-K is just a slightly smaller version of the SL and actually is pretty great for your smaller frame larpers like your wife or girlfriend you don’t have.
SL-K is also great if you have a smaller firearm like an AR pistol.

What about the MFT Minimalist? I have really started to enjoy it more and more! Has a QD slot as well.
@@vettelover2009I disagree. Objectively speaking, wider cheekweld (which translates to more comfortable to most), tight lockup, cheaper than most.
@@Nuke-China no problem, I just figured that it's decent option for $20 or so, and certainly not a bad choice for lightweight ARs
I guess I'm the oddball here with MFT Minimalists
That’s my fave
Best stonk
I completely agree with Hop on the CTR. It’s the best, and I don’t even consider any of the others because of this.
Also for anyone that has an issue with the slightly wobble that the CTR has - just put a little duct tape on the buffer tube. That tiny amount prevents the wobbling and takes 30 seconds.
STR is S-tier and you can’t change my mind 😂
I like the VLTOR EMOD. I have it on 3 carbines. I don't carry batteries. I do carry a firing pin, an extractor, maybe a bolt, cam pin, a few pins & springs, gas rings, blood clotting powder (which I have used). Adds a few ounces. Not going to war any time soon but I do LARP in the woods.
VLTOR A5 with Emod is all I run. Have it on all my lowers. 👍

i like the ubr for the extra weight on the back it helps balance out something like a 13.9 with a T.H.I.C.C barrel

Hogue is no bueno for us bearded folks. Them janks pull out beard hairs like they’re trying to start a collection.
There is a special place in hell for people who use Hogue. It's next to the pedophiles and mass murderers.

Naw you gotta keep those tucked into your helmet band
I love the Rogers Superstocks. Very similar to the CTR with nice qd cups, friction clamp, and it just looks nice.
I always liked the MFT battlelink. Cheap, and very light
Filling the battery storage compartments with dimes or steel bars helps the balance a lot sometimes.

No way Magpul is better than B5 stocks...😂
Good comparison demo. Thanks for sharing 👍
I've never understood the MOE stock. It has always been a slightly cheaper CTR, but is demonstrably worse than a ctr in every way. Also, the CTR only rattles if you get the wrong stock for your buffer tube and/or you buffer tube is out of spec.
I love the relevant content keep on keeping on this is good shit!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!!
Let’s goooooo!!!!! That can opening sound is iconic
The CTR wobbliness/rattling can be easily fixed under 20 seconds by disassembling the lock mechanism and bending the metal pin to tighten the locking.
I love the timing of this video. As I'm sure there are a lot of people shopping for stocks right now.
I have a PRS stock on my Ruger Precision Rifle .308, maybe not EVERY rifle stock Magpul makes is exclusively for an AR?
I use the ACS-L on an AR-10 set up for long range. The locking mechanism is tight and all I put in the storage is a lens cloth
