  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1992 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse.
    Played through on the normal difficulty level.
    The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse was the first SNES game to feature Disney's mascot, and just like Sega did for his Sega Genesis debut in Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Capcom nailed it.
    Mickey has starred in a lot of great video games over the years, but the ones from the 16-bit era are the ones that have stuck with me the most. When it came out at the end of 1992, Magical Quest looked and sounded fantastic, and it still does now. The animation is great - I love the details like the way he pulls the curtain over as he's changing his outfits, and the colorful scenery and parallax scrolling make every stage pop nicely. The music is super catchy, and it sounds a whole lot like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. That distinctive combination of high strings, trilling flutes, and tinny reverbed brass gives the soundtrack a showy bit of pseudo-orchestral flair, and you'll remember the tunes long after you've turned the game off.
    The gameplay is simple, classic platformer fare. Mickey has six lengthy stages to survive if he's going to rescue Pluto, and each one sees him hopping on enemies' heads, throwing blocks, seeking out hidden power-up caches and storefront entrances, and best of all, playing magical dress-up.
    When Mickey puts on his magician outfit, he can breathe underwater and blast enemies like he's Mega Man X, complete with Mega Buster. In his firefighter uniform his hose fire can shift and destroy blocks, douse flames, and make ice. And finally, when he dons his shamrock-green mountaineering lederhosen, Mickey becomes the Bionic Commando, firing a grappling hook to grab objects, launch himself across chasms, and stun enemies.
    Noticing a pattern here? Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse is a giant melting pot of elements from classic Capcom games, and the entire package comes together beautifully. The gameplay is tight, it's as fun to play as it is good to look at, and the level of polish on display is top-tier Capcom stuff.
    It doesn't put up a thumb-destroying challenge, but that's totally okay. It can still put a big smile on my face, and for me, that's more than enough cause to revisit this magical quest again and again.

    Platforming goodness right here, with loads of secrets, tons of collectibles, and classy cartoonish graphics, all set to wonderfully adventurous music. Us 90's kids got spoiled by games like these, LOL.

      Yes, us 90's kids had it good indeed. I love the costumes in this game, especially the wizard one. The charged magic shot was the best attack in the game. Those hidden upgrade shops were awesome.

      @therealseanw.stewart2071 2 года назад +4

      Hard to explain how fun using those different costumes was, for some reason I just loved the fireman and how the developers made so many different enemies and platform gimmicks that utilize it in a clever way. Plus, the atmosphere of places like Fire Grotto was special. I thought it was so scary!

      I think it's neat that no matter who handled the development of Mickey games, they all gave Mickey a curtain to change clothes behind (I'm thinking of _Mickey's Ultimate Challenge_ for Genesis, that was developed by WayForward!), and they respected his design and animation. I'm not going to pretend like bad games didn't exist back during the 8 and 16-bit eras, but man, when games were good like this, they were _GOOD_ . Capcom were god-tier back in the day and if someone born recently were to ask what you meant, this game would be a perfect example to illustrate the point.

      It doesn't get much more classic than this. Absolutely some of my favorite 16-bit platformers, Capcom made these with love! Although short and a bit on the easy side, there was just so much heart here, something about the atmosphere of these games really sucked me in with the amazing soundtracks. Something about Fire Grotto was so scary to me as a kid! The overall sound design is very similar to Super Ghouls n' Ghosts. Plus it's just little touches like how you can pick up and throw stuff, enemies included, sending them spinning like Koopa shells! Never gets old.
      Mickey's costumes and their gimmicks really pushed these games over-the-top with how clever they were utilized. From using the magic to breathe underwater to latching onto ledges Bionic Commando-style with your lederhosen to dousing flaming platforms and enemies as the fireman. Even the enemies and bosses ooze charm. The Magical Quest trilogy are absolutely some of the best Mickey Mouse games, and some of my favorite Disney-based games in general besides Kingdom Hearts. Good times!

    Always loved this game. Heck, it's one of my favorite SNES platformers. This entire trilogy is great! Truly one of Capcom's greatest series of licensed games. While all fantastic, it's a shame the third one didn't originally come to the West until its GBA port years later. But by...alternative means I still got to play the SFC version as a kid and it's awesome.

    This game had one of the best Nintendo Power articles about it. I remember looking at the pictures and thinking this looks amazing. Keep in mind, you also couldn’t tell any of your friends that you wanted to play a Mickey Mouse game at that point (We were all playing Street Fighter 2, Wolfenstein 3D etc.), so we loved it on the down low. Don’t tell anyone. Shhh.

      You know, the Mickey Mouse video games of the 90's had, to me at least, this kind of dark fantasy quality about them. I mean yeah the graphics were bright and cheery, the music could be happy sounding, but then when one thinks about the bosses and the enemies, it becomes unsettling. Mickey and his friends in video games, unlike the source material, can be killed. And villains like Pete and Mizrabel aren't afraid to kill them!

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  2 года назад

      @@LPetal86 Yeah. Even though the graphics were the only decent thing about it, I think Fantasia fits that same description.

    I played the Game Boy Advance port of The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse, called Disney's Magical Quest Starring Mickey & Minnie back in 2002. In the GBA version Minnie Mouse was added to the game as a playable character, though she is identical in gameplay to Mickey. Additionally, four minigames for both Single-player and multiplayer were added to the remake. The multiplayer mini-games were played with the GBA link cable and only one cartridge was needed to play with a friend. Notably, the GBA port also introduced a save feature and could connect to Disney's Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse via the GameCube-Game Boy Advance link cable.

    If you’re fighting that bird boss as rock climber Micky Mouse, you can actually snatch the egg from the bird boss before the bird cracks it and throw it back at the bird to deal damage before it flies away. Did you know that? I tried that out in my Magical Quest on my SNES rom in my Xbox. Sadly my game only has dialogue that does not provide English.
