    Hi! As a former shopaholic, I did a no buy for the year of 2018. It was the most amazing and detoxifying experience. You will make it and feel so much better. I always wonder now how I used to have time for shopping… life is richer without consumerism. ❤❤❤

    I do Frugal February, Mindful May (no buy) NOBUY-July and NO-November (no buy) works out well for me, 4 no buy months and the rest are pretty low buy, the only month I spend is Stock-tober (October, as I stock up on all canned goods, personal items, and household stuff) I make sure I have a 1-year supply and I'm good .... try it, it really works. I'm a frugalnista and am okay with it : )

    I have been in my nobuyyear journey this year. I thought - and so did many people - that I was not able to do it, but here I am. It has gone well, no impulse purchases at all. My ban list consist clothes, shoes, and bags. I bought zero of those.
    You can do it! It is also very catharsis. Take care! 🌼

    I split my clothing budget in half this year. A no buy seems to drastic to me, there's always something I need (like replacement undies/socks) or want enough (e.g. gaps in my wardrobe) to justify it. 😂 But I wanted to cut the latter drastically and I succeeded! One positive side effect besides the saved money is that I finally actually wear my clothes. I need and want to get good use out of them and not already wanting the next thing. I will definitely keep the smaller budget. Wishing you success, too! 😊

    Im so inspired to do a no buy year for 2024. Im a shopaholic for sure and i think i feel this fomo of missing out on new trends and if im not buying the new styles and trends that im going to miss out on something amazing, but its really just stuff at the end of the day. Im terrified to do a no buy year, but i know it is possible. Shopping for myself is not beneficial for my family at all. I want to feel secure financially and im ruining it by constantly spending money oneaningless things. Good job! You can do it!

    • @uncomplicatedspaces
      @uncomplicatedspaces  9 месяцев назад +3

      You can do it! I think that once you see the financial benefits that not buying unnecessary things has on your family's budget, you won't have fomo as bad. And the only purpose of trends is to keep us shopping, to make us feel like the things we own aren't good enough. But they are ♥️

      Mee too. I will be doing a no buy for 2024 as I want to spend more money on travels, but the fomo is real so will be unsubscribing from newsletters and find activities to do within the home ultimately I want my home to be similar to a hotel which has minimal items, it’s something I’m working towards

      I'm so excited for you! That dopamine hit is definitely really strong and I'd recommend removing shopping temptation as much as possible. I've been getting a ton of emails this past week (from brands I haven't heard from in years) and I've been doing a lot of blocking before I even have a chance to look at the email). If you want to keep your friendships but shopping is a big part, is there other things you can do?

    My husband and I do no spending for 6 months. We usually either shop for spring/summer in one shot, then fall/winter in another. And most times, we set a limit or shop second hand. We both work in factories so there’s really no need to have a closet full of nice new trending items because we also don’t eat out as much! Also resulting in, not wearing make up as much! 😂 We have to work on Christmas and Birthdays but… otherwise we’ve gotten much better! You got this!

    I am an inspiring minimalist for few years now and after having decluttered 50% of my wardrobe around 8 years ago I buy few good quality pieces a year (like 2 cashmere sweaters or a pair of shoes, gold earrings). My clothes budget is stable (below EUR 500 per year) all this time, I don’t have any urges to buy but it’s harder and harder to buy anything ant all. Be careful if you stick to this lifestyle, your expectations grow and one can overthink while it should probably be easier, right ? Anyway, I don’t regret my choices as it is very advantageous for me financially. I don’t need major decluttering anymore all this time as the use of my items increased and I wear them too death, they are also better quality and expensive (like 250
    per cashmere sweater or shoes) so I would not be able to just give them away without any financial guilt.

  • @GlorytotheOnetrueGod
    @GlorytotheOnetrueGod 9 месяцев назад +6

    Hi. I want to do this with you. I also declutterred a lot, was on a minimal journey. I even did a no spend month and was shocked and pleasantly surprised how much I saved. However, when stress creeps up to uncomfortable levels and I’m trying to lose weight, I can’t go to my comfort food. Shopping is what I choose. My spending has gotten out of control- even though I am a frugal spender. I justified every purchase, but my closet got full again. I am going to try journaling- it’s free. May we all succeed in our journeys.

      Shopping is such a quick and easy fix when we're stressed but I'm starting to realize that while it's stress relieving in the moment, it ends up causing more stress eventually. I hope that you find journaling helpful!

    The less items I own the more i treasure and value what I own. I found when I had loads of clothes and house clutter i didn’t value anything I didn’t care for it it was something I would just throw in a corner or hide in a draw getting wasted with out even a second though but now I sold all my bits and rehomed them I been loving the items I have kept the small amount items I will use
    It’s made me realise I don’t need to buy stuff and I have been saving my money I’m happy with the stuff around me I don’t need that new trendy jumper in the store or that new decorative item that’s on display in the shop. I used to go into shops and by everything I liked the look off now I take a step back and go I don’t need that. I can proudly say after 4 months I can walk into a shop and walk out with nothing in my hands nothing interests me no more that I changed my mind set I’m content with what I got. It’s been such a amazing feeling to realise that.

    • @uncomplicatedspaces
      @uncomplicatedspaces  9 месяцев назад

      You make a great point about not valuing belongings when there are so many. I think all the clutter overshadows the things that we truly love. And it's so great to hear that you are content...that's the ultimate goal, isn't it?!?

    I have the same issue of "going in for one thing but falling in love with a ton" which has a cost at the end 😮
    I only do no buy when I don't have the money for it and I'm able to be ok but it should always be a "I don't have the money for it " thing in order to be happier, simpler etc...😊

    I’m about to do a low buy year for 2024 starting today…I’ve never done this before. But I’m a shopaholic in the form of Amazon & eating out. This new year I’m going to move out a the end of the year, lease a car (hopefully) & eat out less… I want less items in my home… I’m so nervous I’m gonna just keep buying stuff but I made a list of the things I’m allowed to buy if needed and stick to it & my reasons for doing a low buy year…

  • @azsubie3177

    I feel this so much in my own life. Even started blogging, in a way, to hopefully give me reasons to continue the journey. This past year I started with great intent to do a low buy. Well, that fell apart. The past few months have been better but I really want to challenge myself to do a no buy where I only buy replacements for used up items or necessities and essentials. I am reading Greg McKeown's book, "Essentialism" and hoping to give myself a springboard to saving more money and finding peace and gratitidue for what I do have.

    • @uncomplicatedspaces
      @uncomplicatedspaces  9 месяцев назад

      You can do it! I think you are taking great steps to increase your chances of success. Blogging is a great way to stay accountable and I think that's a great book...you've reminded me that I should re-read it as it's been years. Another thing that I've found helpful is to reduce temptation...no "browsing" online or at shops, reduce social media use or unfollow accounts that make you want to shop (reduces marketing) or whatever else that increases your chances of shopping. Once you get over the first month or 2, I think the benefits will be so motivating. I'm almost 2 months in and I'm starting to see and feel the benefits, and they make me excited to continue, although I acknowledge that I have a long way to go.

    We only have 2 weeks to end the year 2023, it's also a season of gift giving to our loved ones and families. It is quite overwhelming to spend and give gifts to our loved ones just to make them pleased/happy and most of the times we tend to overspend thinking that this season only happens once a year. Right now, I'm so tempting to buy new clothes and shoes for this holiday season, but on the back of my mind, there is a voice reminding me that it is not practical to buy just because I want it. I'm glad I saw your video and watched it. It is a good reminder to why not buy and be practical. :) Watching from Philippines

    I love this idea! I am starting a new job in January 2024, so I want to get myself a first day of new job outfit, but after that, I love the idea of starting a no-buy. I may not go for a full year, especially because I'm not sure what is the dress code at my new job. Maybe I will start at 3 or 6 months, and then try 1 year. I just bought a bunch of secondhand clothes for a trip (I needed light weight clothing that covers my legs to fit the climate and respect the culture) that aren't really my style. It felt AWFUL to spend so much of my money on clothes that I doubt I will wear much beyond traveling. There are a few items that surprised me with how much I like them, but I prefer showing my legs, so I won't usually reach for long pants when it's hot outside. I really need to go through my wardrobe. I'm a working adult in my mid 20s now, so a lot of the clothes I wore as a student aren't appropriate for work, and I prefer to wear comfortable clothes on weekends!

    I'm going to try to do this for 2023 too. I finally got out of an abusive life for... well it was all my life lol and as a self employed disabled business owner, money isn't easy to come by for me and I have a lot of things to pay for and now two sick cats. I used to shop a lot to fill the depression void and I don't need to be doing that anymore... especially in a tiny 370 square foot studio lol. Fingers crossed for me aaaah. The only actual need on my list would be a good winter coat since I moved from the south to the midwest so... winter lol but other than that, I know I just don't need more stuff. Maybe documenting it again like you are will help me again.

    I am slowly and effortlessly spending less on stuff, When I go to a thrift store to donate items, I browse the alleys and treat it like a museum where I can revisit things from the past; I will pick up an item, examine it and remember one of my aunt had one dish like this, and then I will put it back on the shelf. Then I exit the store and congratulate myself for not bringing home an item I didn't need. I will shop for food and some essentials like furnace filters, wipers, things I need. I did it for financial reasons and also because when my mom left for a care home, she had not cleared many years of accumulation. Too much stuff is toxic and bad for mental health.

    • @uncomplicatedspaces
      @uncomplicatedspaces  9 месяцев назад

      That is such a great way to approach the thrift store, allowing you to enjoy the experience but not accumulate more stuff! It's interesting that you say that about your mom and the years of accumulation. My husband and I were just talking about that the other night in terms of our own parent's stuff.

      I did even better. My mom gave me a nice china set with all the serving plates, she had not used it in years. But then she moved out. I realized after 2 years that I would not use it. I sold it , I got money for it and it gave me back my space. I won't tell my mom, this set was not a need for me, it was a burden I didn't want to push onto my children.@@uncomplicatedspaces

My closet has been reduced considerably over the past few years and I have two capsules: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. We started a journey about 6 months ago after looking at our spending. We make good money yet not a lot to show for it. We plan to retire in 10 years and want to be debt free. So I think we are over moving or building a house.
    Eating out is down to special occasions. I think we went to 1 foodie event in 2023 vs many. We quit a few wine clubs.
    We are more intentional with grocery shopping and meal prep.
    Shopping has been a problem for me for years...decades. I have moved to thrifting and cut costs considerably and we also have a set amount we can spend a month. I do not feel as bad thrifting. The stores I go to serve a ministry or the veterans. I rotate out clothes to donate also.
    It is a process. We struggled with purchasing another camper. Stipulation, we do not go in debt and it doesn't interfere with our overall plan to be debt free in 5-7 years.
    We spend less with camping overall including the cost of the camper than we did eating out a few times a week and going to foodie events.
    We want to be debt free for better retirement but we also want to be more generous to help others.
    Allow some grace, if we beat off track, we acknowledge it and try again.

    Looking forwards to seeing the progress you make. I'll be doing it along with you. I'm just in the process of making decisions about the details. I'm really hopeful and enjoyed your video.

    I’d like to try this but am pretty sure I’d fail. Maybe try a no buymonth or week first. Plus I doubt my husband would go for it. So frustrating when your partner doesn’t agree with your ideas. Oh well 😔

      You can do it! Starting off with a shorter amount of time is a great idea. It really helps to build your confidence. You can also do 1 month no buy, normal month and alternate.

    But is this really fixing the source of the need to buy unnecessary items? Otherwise the cycle could start again.

    • @uncomplicatedspaces
      @uncomplicatedspaces  8 месяцев назад +1

      I think so. Removing the option to shop has left room for self reflection about why I buy things that I don't need. I can't tell now if the cycle will continue but I think it's worth a try.

    My problem is not clothing but purses. I keep looking for the right purse. I see one that I really like then a few weeks later I find fault with it. Any advice

      I know that feeling! How about instead of focusing on what you DON'T like about it, start thinking about what you DO like about it? Reframing your thoughts from feeling negative about the item towards feeling positive about it might help. It's more along the lines of an abundance mindset, which is something I'm trying to develop too.
