      @@AaronWallace2008 It's polyester based, which I wouldn't choose to use on this sort of repair if there's both that and epoxy available. I could have added thickener to the resin, but then it would have been slower wetting out the fibre glass.

    I'm a naval architect. When I did repairs or serious structural builds on my own boat, I use epoxy. At 3x the cost. When working overhead, wet out the cloth on a plastic coated table first. Then sprinkle /dust with a small amount of colloidal silica ("Cab-O-Sil") to make the resin extra sticky. THEN apply the material to the upside down surface. Don't try more than 3-4 layers at time when working upside down.

    I have worked on boats for a few years and some constructive advice for you, purchase a bolt roller to roll out the glass after you have wet it out. It helps compress the glass layers and remove bubbles thus strengthening your repair, and don't glass straight over gel even though it has been scuffed just doesn't chemically bond as well. Apart from that mate great work, looks awesome been watching all you videos and its an amazing job. :)

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  3 года назад

      Thanks for this. Yes I did mention in the video that I'd usually roll or stipple out a laminate, but the shape, and the fact I had resin on my gloves already, meant I did the consolidation that way. I could see through the translucent glass that I had a nice consolidation and no air.
      In terms of bonding to gelcoat - once you're through the waxy top layer it's just a thickened polyester resin, so if you're getting a good bond to a laminated sheet of polyester resin/glass fibre, you'll also get a mechanical bond to well keyed gelcoat. There's no chemical bond here like you'd get if bonding to a fresh laminate that's only cured to A or B stage, but still wet/tacky.

    I haven't seen the video yet, but there was a grinder on the thumbnail, so I'm expecting some serious action. Don't break my heart Alex. (i've now seen the video and can confirm that it's not clickbait. The lack of destructive grinder action is made up for with some breath-taking filler work and jaw-droppingly courageous fibre-glassing).

    I always thought and experienced, that you can't use epoxy and fiber matt due to the binder used in the matt.
    The last time I saw someone using this combination the resin cured around the fibers without connecting to them.
    The reasons for this is the binder of the matt used to hold the fibers in place.
    When using matt, I always use polyester due to it's Styrol content. The binder is solvable in Styrol

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  3 года назад

      As mentioned, this has a different binder that is compatible with epoxy.

    Whatever you do with the bottom paint, think about choosing a color that’s not black. My friend said that after he changed the color of the bottom paint to green on his 42’ sailboat he would see tons more marine life near the boat while under way. Apparently the color looked less menacing than black, that probably looks like an Orca.

    22 episodes in is probably the wrong time to ask this Alex. But why the lifeboat. I spent a good amount of time at see on ships with lifeboats like Alan, and like you said early on, they don’t spend a lot of time In the water, with sparing tests, and even in worst case scenario are not supposed to be in the water long before rescue. From the small amount of time inside one of these between testing the lifeboats and my own personal training, they are not particularly pleasant places to spend large amounts of time on. If it’s safety based, why not a old RNLI style “unsinkable” vessel?

      Not to be a downer tho, if someone had told me last year that I’d be hooked on a narrative of a life boat restoration series I’d have said they were crazy. But here we are. The series is so watchable mainly because the narrating is so witty and endearing.
