I hope your RUclips channel really helps fund this project. I’ve never come across a channel about a project I have no interest in but become hooked so quickly.
“You can even watch the paint drying on a loop repeat” Ah, finally some good content. No longer will I have to pop open a paint canto watch paint dry!!
Brass plumbing fittings are the easiest, cleanest and most accurate way for mixing two pack paint. A step drill, 3/4 threaded male brass connector, nuts, end cap and some thread tape for both lids. Then you have spouts on each lid of your paint cans and can pour out only what you need into your measuring container. It's much easier than slopping around a ladle and getting paint into the grooves, running down the sides of the can etc. Hope I explained it well enough and this helps.
A tip I learned for making clean even caulk lines is to get a 3/4" or similar metric sized steel ball bearing and affixing a stick handle to it with epoxy putty so it looks like a round lollipop. I welded a steel rod to mine but most people just use a wood or plastic rod & adhesive. You drag the ball bearing along the length of the caulk while pressing it into the corner angle and it smooths out the caulk making it consistent along the length of the seam & gives a better cosmetic appearance. You can get smaller ball bearings for tighter corners but the 3/4" bearing works good for your average 3/8" bead of caulk. You just use a rag to wipe off the excess caulk from the ball bearing as you finish each seam.
I did an anti slip surface with 40 grain sandpaper, glued on with epoxy resin, than thin coat over the top. Worked well here in the Tropics, and looks neat, with rounded corners.
for a brief moment i thought .. what no "ALAN" had me worried for a second ....... "ALAN" ....... did you have a productive trip ? ...... nice to see your back working on the boat .... "ALAN" : )
I love how much you transformed this boat, you took a lemon (the pandemic) and turned it into lemonade. I wish I had a project like this to fill the void of self isolation this past year and a half has provided but your videos do suffice. ^_^
However you did a truly terrible job wetting out the roller at the end, I've never seen anyone do so badly in fact. Ha ha :-D Need to get it more even in the rolling part of the tray before touching your work surface or you'll get those stripes intensely and terrible coverage per hour rates :-D
You caught me out. I needed the clip for the film, but only had the last of the dregs of paint in the tray. Actually doing the paint job was scheduled for the next day.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Ha ha ha, I was NOT expecting that response and I greatly value your honesty. However you just lost some respect. We painted our boat with the hempel silicone stuff last year, 30% of it was left on the boat after the first summer but its a planing boat so it might last on alan
Interesting and alarming. I gather there's a middle ground in terms of speed to keep it working properly. Assuming you prepped the substrate as per spec?
Thinking about anti fouling, in Thailand and Malaysia the Fisher men painted their boats bottom with a paint that had hot chillies powder mixed in. Something to check out. But fowling in northern regions is not as severe as in tropical waters. All the best wishes towards your project's progress.
Next time put a garbage bag in a bucket and spin off the mixer into that. It makes it very easy to get almost completely clean cuz you can switch into high gear and just sling almost all the paint off without making a huge mess.
Why put a garbage bag in a bucket? that makes no sense. just a waste of a garbage bag. I am not bashing you, it just make no sense. Just use that one bucket for paint splatter and trash after your done painting. who cares about the inside. Buckets are cheap.
@@outlawflyer7868 for chemically active (2-part) paints/sealants, it would likely ruin the bucket. Why waste a whole bucket when you can just use a single bag...
@@outlawflyer7868 buckets are cheap but they aren't as cheap as garbage bags. I just I'm in the habit of putting a garbage bag in a bucket so that when I'm done with whatever I'm doing I can just throw the garbage bag away in the bucket stays nice and clean for the next job
Always thinking outside the box with your approach to every part of this project... in fact, I'm not certain you realise there is a box ;) Using the spray bottle was either genius or lunacy, and without having tried it I'm not sure which! Keep having fun :)
Thanks for reminding me to reseal the 2 halves, I am using OB1, which might turn out to flexible to paint with anything but a rubber based paint, which in turn may well limit the operational temperature range, is their any reason why you didn't use the Samson Marine adhesive (flexibility?)
Just a few tips for you It was probably UV resistant filler used to seal the gaps, the fact that some was in worse condition means that the UV rays were hitting it more or less in the same area depending on the season therefore your will hold up for a good few years. If you had used masking tape before you had applied the sealant you would of got nice clean lines. I do understand you will paint over however using this method you would get a better finish or unless you get out the Stanley knife Never never mix paint on a table and preferably do so outside as some paints have noxious fumes. I kind of like that phrase much more posh than saying stinks like shit. You mix it on the ground as you both get a better angle and it is more stable than a table though yours looked sturdy and you can see how it is mixing. Plus of course if it does tip over(Which is more likely as you are stirring it at an angle) it is better to do so on the ground rather than the furniture curtains etc etc.
Debbie downer here, is there a slight chance of the anti slip holding a thin film of water which will then go on to freeze ? maybe some sub zero sea trials are in order.
iused to work on a boats whoes skipper did anti skid with deck paint with beach sand he collected spreadon the paint when it was wet.. ending up with evil stuff that ripped through your wet gear and skin but did it job.
Just so you know, That non-slip paint does nothing/very little to snow. As snow, particularly when stepped on, fills the voids between the granules and it again becomes a slick surface. I'm sure that wasn't the intention of it either, but just so you're aware.
Yes you're right that both snow and ice disables most friction style anti slip. Luckily whilst in transit it'll mostly be just water. In situ in cold climes, clearing the decks will end up a daily chore.
I wonder if Kiwi Grip (the preferred non-slip for most sailboats) might work better. It's kind of rubbery with lots of little peaks when applied. The flexing when stood on, might tend to help break up any snow or ice.
I hope your RUclips channel really helps fund this project. I’ve never come across a channel about a project I have no interest in but become hooked so quickly.

I really enjoy this also. I think it is the completely functional engineering requirements and his explanation of the problem solving process.

Sounds very neat, but the ladle takes literally seconds too.

A drop of sharp sand in deck paint will save u a bob or two. I've used it for years, same as most of the fishing fleet in my town ✌
