- Washing machines need regular cleaning which ensures that they keep functioning at their optimal performance.
With repeated wash cycles, detergent lather combined with hard water starts accumulating scale on the outer walls of the drum as well on other internal components, which if left unchecked can increase weight of the drum, reduce cleaning performance and increase power consumption as a result of additional load that the motor has to drive.
Running tub clean function regularly in washing machines prevents scale deposits to an extent, but in case machine is too old or water being supplied is has excessive TDS, descalant can be used which dissolves toughest scale deposits.
However excessive use of descalant should be avoided as it can instead damage internal components like aluminum spider and other parts inside.

The reason power consumption increases due to scale buildup isn't that it adds weight to the drum. It's the heating element that becomes less efficient because it's got an insulated coating of scale and takes longer to reach the set temperature.
What is the purpose of descaling without the descaling powder?
Descaling means that you have to use the powder, does it not?
Tub cleaning can be done without using descalant.
He's not descaling. Just tub cleaning. But without using any product its not very effective. Apart from scale the inner tub also accumulates dirt which needs to removed with oxygen bleach. Yes, a washing machine also needs to be cleaned from time to time. Plain tub cleans like here are better than none but less effective than with using chemicals.
