Man, I've been watching truck camper mods for a quite a while over the past 2 years and this has to be one of the best if not the best out there. Congrats on an awesome job
This is the best craftsmanship I've seen on a truck storage project. Having owned many trucks with toppers, the two things I would do is 1) get rid of the clamps and bolt the topper to the truck rails using some fender washers and lock nuts, and 2) add a tail gate weatherstrip. Every truck I've owned sucks dust through the tail gate on dirt roads.
where does the tailgate weather stip go? Does it fit between the shell and tailgate lip or vertical on the tailgate where it sits against the truck? TIA
Just came across the video this week. This is really great job and we are very impressed with the functionality and the craftsmanship of your work.. My wife and I also have a 6x12 Cargo Trailer we use for multi-use. And have found that the tuck away pockets make a huge difference in making things work well. #BeSafe take care.
This is my favorite minimalist camper mod I've seen so far. Space for the essentials, but you still get to drive a low profile, normal size vehicle. Nice work!
classy design, nice workmanship! i like the friction fit carpeted lids. simple, yet so functional... and the woodwork looks top quality! thanks for sharing!
That's an amazingly nice build! I sure wish I had those kind of carpentry skills. I've pretty much resigned myself to a wal-mart cot and several bins for storage. Compared to that, your build is pure luxury. Enjoy!
I also have been watching camper mod videos and I think this is the nicest build I have seen. At the end I can see an organized corner of extensive tools so I am not surprised by what you can do. Geez, it is nice. The bed must be 8 feet because those tri fold pads are a few inches over 6 feet and you had room to have that open box at the front of the bed. I would like to see it decked out with gear just to put a cherry on top of the whipped cream. Again, wow!
Cool set up Ian. I'm looking to do something similar but geared more towards overlanding applications. You obviously have much more room with the larger bed. I have a 2017 Tacoma. I appreciate all the offered resources. Most guys don't really give away their ideas or "secrets". Safe travels.
You did a awesome job! Plenty of storage. Just eat at restaurant and bathroom facilities. Don't have to pay hotel cost to sleep. can eat a camp grounds ! park picnic area's. Very nice job!
Other than the propane tank, it look good. ;-) If that's an approved horizontal propane tank, you're ok but it's required if stored within the space it must be in an air tight box. It also needs to have ventilation at the lowest point (propane is heavier then air) or mount it under the bed in a box for protection from debris.
Ian Leslie, you were my thermodynamics professor at NMSU, my name is Karl Johannes if you remember me! This is an awesome build and I would love to see a video about how it held up or anything that changed over the years, as I’m building a truck bed platform too. Hope you are enjoying retirement!
Great ideas! I'm purchasing a shell for my Tundra and was looking for ideas for camping. There is one problem for me since I'm a big guy, 6-5, I'm worried about not being to sit upright on the bed. But I love the storage and organization ideas.
One way to do it is to make the base a little shorter and not so tall. This will give you plenty of head room. Check out the videos I have made. you can some ideas there as well.
the metal thats still visable below the campershell will radiate a lot of cold at night and wake you up verry quick if you happen to roll intoo it , to counter it ou could use sleepingbags or cover it and the camperclamps at the same time with some foam up against the sides up to about the lower edge of the windows to insulate them a little and prevent hitting stuff, you could cover them in fabric so they look nice too if you gleu two 1 inch thick pieces together to make a 2 inch side you could make pockets into the rearpart so the sides dont get pushed away from the sides by the camperclamps

Sweet set-up! Probably the best craftsmanship of any carpet/camping kit I've seen! Thanks for that..
That's about as neat and tidy as it can get. Beautiful looking setup....nice work!!!
What a great design! Outside of the propane bottle issue tweak, which is an easy fix. This is almost perfect! This is so cool. Great job!
This is the neatest of these pickup campers I have seen. Incredible.
Thanks. Most of the credit goes to my son.

Love the huge pull out under bed storage
The original striped ones came with the mattresses. We later bought one queen size from Amazon because the originals were getting worn.
