It allows the surface to open up and take in more strain or paint. After a few coats have dried you can always sand or steel wool to smoothen out the surface.
Correct. You dampen it then allow it to dry before staining or painting. You'll feel the texture of the wood has changed due to "opening" up the pores of the wood. It's why when a piece of wood hasn't been properly sealed (like a kitchen table or coffee table) and someone places a drink that sweats without using a coaster, you get the raised ring where the cup sat. Same with me. Been dealing with painful gout in my left foot for over a month and can’t even walk. Been crying almost every day. Been rough to say the least.
Great idea on replacing the plastic bedliner with the BedRug. Insulative, sound deadening, easy to slide things on and fits every indentation and grove in the bed because it's made specifically for the model and impervious to almost all spills and damage - darn near bulletproof.
Mav, line those sliding drawers with contact adhesive. They're waterproof and easy to clean. Come in rolls and while fitting can be a pain, with your skills you'll have it done in no time!
Love how it turned out and you got it done pretty quick even with the mid build change. I built out my own truck bed last October and it’s quite similar to your last setup. Right now I’m renovating a camper to take out to Montana this summer and it’s amazing how many little unknown issues you encounter along the way in projects like this. Also figuring out measurements and actually cutting the wood is always the most stressful part to me.
Loved this video, Mav. I really admire your work habits, keeping your shop clean. I was wondering why you didn't engineer an in-fill for the double bed and then you revealed it! Very clever. Maybe some kind of foldable mattress could work as a seat & backrest during the day, and then flatten out to a double at night? Also looks like it might be more of a pain to cook outside with, but I guess that's a worthwhile trade off.
Yeah the location of the butcher block looks like it's kinda blocked by the tailgate mechanism on one side and the tailgate itself on the other. But inside looks like it will be way easier. And he also has the entire tailgate to use as a surface for the grill.
@@squeaky_moths I believe his drawer sliders are 2 stage.....he can pull them out all the way where his entire drawer is hanging out of the bed.....should put his butcher block right at end of tailgate Great design!
I was thinking both of the things that you mentioned but I have to admit that I made a surprised face when he got the small piece of wood on the top to make it a double
Just a friendly tip to everyone working alone with big sheets of wood or drywall. Nice build, gave me some good ideas for a build I am thinking about. One suggestion, I didn't see anything for electricity if you are at a campground with power. Hey Mav,
Some friendly advice from a more than hobbyist wood worker. When it comes to staining and or painting. I usually turn to a wet sponge or wet towels and pre dampen the surface. It allows the surface to open up and take in more strain or paint. After a few coats have dried you can always sand or steel wool to smoothen out the surface.
This is great advice, my father taught me the sponge trick years ago and I still use it to this day.
So you lightly dampen the wood with water before oiling/staining/painting?
It is reopening the pores of the wood.

Omg. I love the new build so much. It’s so classy and organized. Everything has a place. Can’t wait to see the first video when you take it out on the road. Good job Mav👏🏾❤️
This episode is going to be your most liked. Congrats on the new upgrade looks dope. Can’t wait to see how it works out camping.
Love it! Thank you for inspiring so many people to follow their dreams! You're a awesome, wholesome person all around
Love to see the whole process and just the way you show it not too many time lapses and stuff it just seems natural and detailed. Your also a good presenter
Looks good brother. I’ve been learning and building out a van for 6 months now, so I can 110% understand and appreciate the scrambled brain from thinking and thinking and testing shit out 😂
Hard work, exciting work! Enjoyed seeing your process! Time to hit the road!!!
I know it’s not all about the money, but how isn’t Duluth Trading company all over this channel? You’re the local celebrity and they sell cold weather and camping gear. It’s perfect! 👍
The mouse trap had me dying 🤣 no way you are letting that happen again! Build looks great Mav cant wait see the adventures and hope you have a great turnout for the weekend meetup
Looking back, ALL your videos help teach us! I now know something about FISHING, BUILDING things, and have lots of inspiration for adventures and cooking! But what I love the MOST MOST is the FUNNY VOICES! That's the very best most funniest part of MAV - ROCK ON little Bro - THANK YOU!
Probably the best and well thought out set up for Truck Bed camping I've ever seen.
Keep being a inspiration to us Mav!👍🏻💯
He made the bed smaller and added a other drawer and storage the man has a whole ass Japan camper seems like a waste
@@legendkillla21 You do comprehend that Steve is for a whole other dynamic of Mavs Channel?
Seems like you’ve never Camped in a Truck before? Having space to stretch your legs and sit up without any inconvenience is EVERYTHING!
Seems like your comment was a waste. 🤷🏻♂️
Are you really born in ‘83 bruh and can’t comprehend?
What the song at 11:39?
WOW Mav great build. You thought everything out perfectly. Can't wait to see your next adventure camping in your truck.
Came out really good, Mav! Love all the thought that went into version 2.0. Looking forward to see how it performs in the field.
Nice to see a The Home Depot that has what you needed in stock. Doesn’t happen here in SoCal. You visit a baker’s dozen and you can’t even find 5/8” carriage bolts . So made due with 1/2” carriage bolts. When my SUV dies, I’m replacing with a pickup and apply some of these ideas 👍🏾🙏🏾
That was impressive, you should be proud of the design & build. Going to be able to keep things organized a lot easier too. Bravo Mav👏👏
Amazing job, Mav! Wasn't expecting this. Love the new setup you've made. Looks like it'll be super comfy. I look forward to seeing more of it!
Sweet Build! Definitely a lot of improvements after many nights in the back of that thing, nice work!
I just restarted my build for my Chevy Aveo, you've given me some ideas to make me excited about maximizing utility of a small space again
what a neat solution, and great work done. It seems to be very practical and well thought-through. What would be interesting to know: the material costs.
I do not have a truck, "just" an SUV, but one never knows what the future brings. Many features of your built can be used for an SUV as well. Congrats on how quickly your channel grew
Hey Mac, I never knew what those grooves are for in my saw horses. Now I know. Thanks man.
Damn it’s crazy to see how far mav has come over the past few years , keep up the grind bro love the videos ! Your awesome
I live in Brooklyn Park.. I bought rapalas at Thorne Brothers once or twice.. I fish Mississippi all the time.. I got a 2000 Ford F-150 XLT..im a gonna watch this video and see how you build your truckBED for camping in.. and then copy you.. I've already seen a ton of your videos.. so I already know.. but I just got my Ford I'm going to set it up within the next few weeks.. I'm an auto mechanic and I work in Coon Rapids at Altra Auto.
I'm a big fan of your truck bed camping.. especially in the winter. Peace out
Mav, this build is epic! Absolutely love it! I hope you have lots of great adventures in this new setup
Pure talent! 💕 The new setup looks incredible 😄 The multi functional components are genius!
with ya Jessica👍
This looks so awesome, it’s everything that was good about the last build and then you improved upon it!! Looks so sick and so practical and the build and install was pro af 👌👏
I just moved to Blaine last night. Crazy how I also just found your channel and realize you're from here. Also building out trucks and vans at a company nearby , the reason I came here. Been living out of my own van for almost a year
Let’s all appreciate that Mac was able to pull off making a awesome place in his truck, keep up with the videos man!
Awesome build Mav! You can see the time and attention that went into planning this new build. Sad to see the old build go but excited to see all the awesome memories you're going to make a share with this new build... See you on the road.
2 questions: How much did the plywood cost you? And what's your plan for the diesel heater?
What is the other light grey material called that you put on some of the top woods pieces??? I haven't been able to find anything that works for mine
roughly how much did the materials cost for this build and did you need any specialty tools to make it happen?
Makes me want a truck now.
Look at gas prices
lmao
The stuff you do is really cool. Kind of makes me want to do something like this one day. When Uh I'm not sure. But hopefully one day!
Nice set up! I would advise putting those kitchen knives down or in a sheath to prevent a nasty cut from exposed blades.
Dude this video you made was absolutely awesome man this was one of my favorite videos to watch. Gotta say seeing you work like this it’s different for the channel, but it’s good I’d love to see more content like this. Hey MAV how is your house coming along I know you have been working a lot on it. Could you possibly do an update video on the house and what you have changed
She turned out very well, great idea being able to slide the floor into that slot and have room for two. A little bit off topic, but have you thought about making a rod with Robert's wrap style guides for lakers and other bigger deep water species through the ice? I have a 28" walleye rod from your old employer and the Robert's wrap really cuts down on guide freeze and the line rubbing the rod. Keep up the great content thanks
When it comes to investing, nothing pays off more than educating yourself with the right information from the right source. That's how you get rich.
Crypto is the new Gold
I wanted to trade crypto but got discouraged by the fluctuations in price
@@Scottlampert991 You have to get more experience first, work with a professional like Mr Dave Jevans on crypto to guide you step-by-step.
@John McGaughey Will I know about Mr Dave Jevans he's a good broker, and more his trading strategies are top notch
That's a good idea, but how do I get to Mr Dave Jevans?
This is awesome! I built a very rough version of this years ago right out of high school but you did a great job! The floor pulling out and turning it into a bigger bed is genius!
This was incredible and honestly so truly inspiring. Really makes me want to buy a cheap van/truck and start somewhere!
Friggin badass duude👌
How old are you?
Damn if only I wasn’t going to the wild game I would’ve been going to the meet up Mav! Keep on truckin! Love ya bud!
it’s all day brah, come in the morning!
@@mav let’s go!
Awesome! Love the new build! Can you kindly post an episode of you or someone like detail geek detailing your truck inside and out? Including engine bay. Would love to see that!
Pro tip Mav, a tape measure is usually exactly 3" long so you can measure without bending the tape.
Not true some are 3" and some are 3"5'
They usually tell u tho
Great job and great videos 📸 mav!
No one:
Mav: I have 4 million storage cubbies...
Well done! I like the links to products and wish there were links for details like your utensil roll and Joseph Joseph nesting bowl set, nesting pots (?), favorite spices, etc… maybe in a specific “what’s in my kitchen drawer?/what I wish was in my kitchen drawer” clip.
Bruh, you need to help an old veteran build this in the back of my truck. I want to take a 3 week cross country. Wishful thinking. I know.......
I know I’m two years late. But where is your ear protection. Take it from someone who has really bad tiniest. Wearing ear protection is very important.
HOW IS MAV GONNA SMASH COLORADO BADDIE CHEEKS ON THAT NARROW BED BUILD?? Big mistake.
This a good point
Great redo! What convenient storage and it looks wonderful!
