200lbs Seal: TRICKY rescue from fishing line around mouth

  • Lately we have mainly dealt with baby seal rescues as many youngsters are now old enough to venture out a bit further into the sea and they often get caught in various kinds of ocean rubbish they like to play with. This adult male Cape Fur Seal was roughly 200lbs or 100kg. Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) had to use their custom build seal rescue net to catch this one at Pelican Point, Namibia. The rescue became tricky when the seal decided to bite onto the net from the inside, which stopped him from sliding all the way into the tip of the net. Antoine and Naude opened the zip on the side to remove the part of the fishing line that was wrapped around his neck, but they also noticed that the line was wrapped around his jaw a few times. They had to allow the seal to stick his head out of the net in order to access the entanglement. It easily could have turned into an injury for the rescuers, but luckily it all went well and our Leatherman Raptor Shears helped us to cut him loose. He must have been in a lot of pain from the entanglement.
He ran back into the ocean. 🦭

I saw a seal with minor fishing line wounds rescued in California.. they tranquilized it, had a team of 10 people transport it onto a boat, "rehabilitated it" for 2 weeks, then once it was released they had 10 people holding up a wooden wall to make sure the seal wouldn't turn around and attack them. These guys are 100x more efficient and cost effective.

This is CA on the rocks, where they tranq., rescue, and quickly administer the neutralizer.

Immeasurable courage to snip near the mouth of a scared wild animal with a set of sharp pointy teeth. Thank you❣

Magnificent job. That seal knew you were helping him, else would have put up quite a fight. It takes real strength to hold down a 200 lb wild animal scared and in pain. These seals are keeping you both in shape. Thank you for saving his gorgeous male seal!

Great Job - this time real dangerous - but if you act very focused and carefully like you do, you allways will be successful. Thanks for the great video.

It is interesting to go back and watch the older videos. It would definitely have been easier and safer with the newer nets.

Naude, you must eat a lot of spinach like Popeye! That seal looked like he had a very chubby neck!!! I can’t imagine the strength you have to have to pin him down!! Next, wow, that camera in the background!!! Now that is quite a lens on that camera!!! The camera you holding your teeth, Is that designed to hold in your teeth or did you rig that to work for you?? Antoine, you cut the line and saved another life!! God bless you all!!! 🧜🏼‍♀️🧜🏻‍♂️ Protectors of the sea!!! 🌊
