OM651 known problems: solenoid valve next to oil pump to be replaced with Crankcase Screw Plug A0019905317. If solenoid valve is defective it will get stuck in closed position preventive oil flow to the engine. This is number one problem and MB is aware of this. Next problem is timing chain tensioner holes are too small for proper and fast oil flow. MB released replacement one with larger holes. Larger holes speed up the process of tensioner piston being pushed against the chain glider much faster.
I've got a 2.5 tdi lwb lt which I use as a camper. Fresh oil every 5000 miles and its done over 450000 miles and still runs like a Swiss watch. I take it to Spain for 3 months every year and everyone keeps asking " when are you getting a new van " . I always reply never as their all junk. Built crap and full of sensors. You can't beat an older vehicle for reliability.
I own a fleet of vans with om651 engine 7 vans in total no major issues with these engines they are pretty reliable if you maintain them correctly. These engines are used in taxis also and go far miles. The highest miles van i have is 320k And lowest 105k miles Had only issue with chains but they usually last between 150k to 250k miles This is what you get with shit quality oil and high intervals and bad coolant that cloogs the oil cooler leading to high oil temp thus bearing failure. Oil pressure is excellent even in high mileage om651 if maintained correctly.
I do agree, I have one customer how’s had his from new drives it sensibility services it when it’s due and has just under 300 thousand on the original engine , but as we all know most get driven like they’d just been stolen and sadly the older engine took that better 👍
Liking the content, im in the ambulance service and I’ve been lucky to see the a v6 turbo quad cam lump after it was removed out of a Mercedes, while shiny new lump waits to be fitted

I know a company that repairs commercial vehicles and trailers they often get sprinters in with om651 engine for service many of them are high milers well over 300k. they have one in now well over 500k, these engines are bullet proof and will run forever if serviced properly, but these van's do not have Stop/Start, that is one reason they last so long.
It's not the Stop/Start.. it's the Oil pump solenoid.. "Pretty much, they told me the reliability of the OM651 is very dependent on regular maintenance (oil changes in particular) and the 'mission'. They knew a few cases with E-class where the engine went 350K miles with no issues... but on Sprinters, they see a lot of issues with oil starvation that lead to engine replacements, pretty much. OM651 has a 'smart' oil pump with a solenoid that reduces pressure to 2 bar under 2K RPM, and keeps it at 5 bar above 2K RPM. It looks like in high load applications, like Sprinters, a spring in that solenoid is prone to stuck in a position that causes the oil pressure to drop to 0.8 bar that leads to pretty sudden death. They saw so many cases like that, they initially recommended replacing that solenoid preventatively at around 75k miles. Here is the original part number: MERCEDES BENZ OM651 Hydraulic Directional Control Valve A6511800315 Then, at some point, they just stopped replacing that part because that was just delaying the issue without resolving it, and used a custom made plug that replaced that solenoid and kept the oil pressure steady at 5 bars all the time. Then MB finally realised they f....cked up and released their own plug that you can order and replace that faulty solenoid once and for all. Here is part number: A0019905317"
Thanks, man!!! I also bought a broken 313 (cracked piston, I guess...) and I was kind of scared removing the engine. And you gave me loads of confidence and relief! With my forklift I will have that b..tch out in no time! Subscribed!
Hi I have a C250 cdi 2012. It's knocking on sounds like number 3 cylinder. Top end looks ok. Took sump pan off, engine and box still connected, but faced with an aluminium casing stopping me accessing the big ends / main bearing carrier. Took all the bolts out that I could see and its still solid. Do I have to remove the gearbox to enable me to get this casting off?
Thanks for replying. Further investigation has shown that - YES - the transmission has to be removed to remove this ally casting / spacer as it has bolts going through from the timing case ! Well done MB - another step backwards.

With oil changes every 30k miles, coolant never , this engine did last a lot
Most likely yeah, engine didnt see good oil
Also very likely timing chain was shot

Sprinter wise it’s sump off and the you have to try and work round the balance shaft carrier that’s also holding the bottom end in
