Thank you, RK for yet another chance for us toobs to look over your shoulder as you give this wonderful old engine the respect it deserves, bringing it back to life and making it look incredible with your attention to detail while you do it!
Right on RK ZKstuff ships to Canada. That is rare. That gasket is brilliant. Today they just stick dissimilar metals together without anything now. Not even anti seize.
Yeah there were millions of them made, so used parts like blocks, cylinders and bases are still plentiful and alotta the smaller stuff is reproduced!!☺
Really enjoying this series - Thanks Roadking. If you ever get the chance try out a soda blaster - it works really well on carbon and rust deposits without pitting the aluminum. Cleans up heads and piston tops really nice.
Continuing to look great, especially the carb. Really good hint on the aluminum paint. Thanks for the shout-out - nice of you to do that. Have a good weekend!
When you said that the rustolium goes a long way. I remembered a joke my grandfather told me. A cutomer bought a really small can of this paint and then came back next day to buy a second one. The shopman asked why he need a second one. The customer said: I bought it to paint the wheel caps of my car. But a drop of paint fell on the table, so i painted the table, then a drop fell on the floor so i painted the floor. Then a drop fell on the driveway. Now i painted half of it and the can is empty.
A Maytag has been on my *"I NEED THIS ENGINE IN MY LIFE!!!"* list since I was about 5 (I'm 17 now), as well as an old Sacs rotary and Lister diesel, but there are NONE for sale in South Africa (apart for the odd Lister, but those are WAY out of my price range), everything on eBay is ridiculously expensive (and that's before you account for the astronomical shipping charges!), and I'm probably one of two people in the entire country that has a thing of old engines. So I'm pretty much screwed at the moment... Sure, I've managed to get a few Briggs engines, a Yanmar or two, a Jaguar XJ6 from the 80's, and a BMC B-series 4cyl from the 60's, but most of them aren't running at the moment, but there's just something about an old Maytag...
Wow some one else the same age who's highly interested in a few motors. I like the old vw air cooled flat 4s I have a block for one just gotta get to building it.
That aluminium paint looks really nice on the plate. And you're right, a little bit goes a long way, besides, if you want to give it more depth, you can always add, but taking it off, ain't that easy. ;) I can already picture the engine with the paint scheme and i bet it will be a really nice show grade one.
My favorite method for cleaning aluminum is to blast it with walnut shells. Crushed walnut shells are no where near as abrasive as crushed glass and leave a smooth surface. I use 50 psi so it doesn't remove any material and the aluminum ends up looking like new. Even the parts with that horrible white powdery crap some aluminum gets look great after a blast with the shells.
Anouther usefull tip before installing the flapper in the carburator is to take some 0000 lapping coumpound and put it on a mirror or piece of glass. You then slide the flat side of the flapper across the surface untill the surface of the flapper looks the same. That is about as perfect as you can get it.
A hand painted original Roadking engine could become a collector item !!!..Looks good with the paint on it ..I really like the dark hunter green you used on the engine block
i got talked into buying one of those OSHA approved air gun ( blow gun ) deals, and i like how much air it moves, but when you are blowing off parts nothing beats a piece of 5/16 brake line attached to a button :) what good is the feeling of safety if you never felt danger?
You could probably make a parts washer with an old sink, a fuel pump off a car and some creative plumbing to re-circulate the cleaning fluids, could be a neat project for you when you're not playing with an engine or three... :P
Roadking you are awesome love the videos. I have a question off topic I would love a small hit and miss motor is there a Brandon should look for. I didn't even know they existed until a few years ago I'm from Utah and I haven't seen to many of them around here
Thanks Bud!! For your first one I would stick with the more common ones like Hercules, Stover or Economy!! Parts are available for them and they are easy to work on and learn about!!☺
Visited your channel but can’t find a video showing more of the Maytag. Interested because I have an old gas engine Maytag with a chain drive kick starter. I even have the galvanized oil mixing can with an intact paper Maytag label.
Nice! At first I thought you would've just put a clear coat on it. But that turned out great bud. The 353695 ? It was made on a Monday. The guy had a hangover! Nice video buddy!
70 grit glass beads at 50 psi work well in a media blaster, too. Cleaning that flywheel, inside and out, would have taken no more than 15 minutes. For some examples of how raw aluminum can look after glass bead blasting go to airhornhospital dot com and click on the restoration project links. I've been restoring locomotive air horns for about 17 years.
I really like the look of the aluminum paint ... That little maytag is going to look great!
I agree. That paint looks really nice. It goes on easy as well.
Thanks Guys!!☺

Yeah Zack is a good Dude!! Ya never know when Bruce might stumble on an Antique Engine eh!!☺
Yes I see a hit and miss engine in my future. Lots of old farms out he to find one.
Pretty amazing that you can still find parts for those old engines. I'm glad to see there's a strong interest in keeping that bit of history around.
Yeah there were millions of them made, so used parts like blocks, cylinders and bases are still plentiful and alotta the smaller stuff is reproduced!!☺
I always wondered how you got the flywheels and plates to look so nice. Thanks for sharing the tip.

This is going to look very smart when it's all done!

I've had that blowgun for 45 years!!☺

I had a nice parts washer, it was about 2ft x 4ft x 1ft!! It took up too much room and I hardly used it so I gave it away!!☺

My serial number is stamped the same way as yours. Mine is number 384305 Mine also dates to 1929.
That Silver Paint Is Sexy , Gerry
Yeah Buddy!! ☺
to bad you don't have a glass bead blaster and it would have a satin finish.
Road King - Izzat poison ivy behind ur recycling cans? Yikes!
I have alotta poison Ivy, but I don't think there is any there!!☺
Heh, hardly anyone knows how to say my name (:
How do you pronounce it Mate!!☺
Similar to joust, almost silent t at the start.
