love me my daily dose of greed yapping about how bad overwatch is
Bit sad and one reason that killed the game for me was that some players like myself really enjoyed the fantasy or play-style of one or two heroes. However due to the game's overall design choices one would be deemed trolling to main a character now.
The game has forgone mastering a hero and switched to who can memorize the rock-paper-scissor flowchart of all hero compositions and Map Design. Given that Heroes counter other Heroes it fell to the skill of the player to overcome the problem with a high hero mastery, but evidently it has become impossible nowadays.
The first two years of ow1, was like that, skill over goes the characters that you face, now for the past how many years, it’s just, if you don’t pick this character, you’ll lose 90% of the time, the game is not bout how skilled you are anymore, it’s only bout the characters that are meta, not your skill.
6v6 is the correct verdict to fall back to but team 4 will never do it because it will admit complete and utter defeat for OverWatch 2. The name will lose all justification for a sequel. The only thing that was different between OverWatch 2 and OverWatch 1 was the PVE which was canceled, and the new 5v5 format. If they go back to see 6v6, they'll be admitting that the project that was OverWatch 2 was a complete and utter failure and we all know blizzard/ Activision will never do that

@o7-pika500 everyone who wants 6v6 know this and alot say it. But they don't really care if the sequel is justified. Because as it stands the sequel isn't fun.
Honestly Blizzard would have positive press if they just admitted it wasn't working and reverted and balanced appropriately, and not try all this bs with passives and raid boss tanks

Well sometimes in life you have to admit you’re wrong. I know it’s hard but every functioning member of society has to do it at some point. It’s how you grow and move past things. Blizzard being ignorant because they’d prove the people right is not a good reason to stubbornly stick with something that isn’t working.

Turns out mega buffing tanks doesn't fix anything it just either leads to one sided stomps from a tank or the tank gets focused even more than usual because their existence is just that oppressive

My conspiracy theory is that the game is gonna turn into a Gold player Wonderland where eventually so many top players leave that they don't exist in the queue. Then they end up having to promote those Gold players to have any sort of top level queue but those people are still Gold in the end so if any top players come back, those Goldies will end up eventually doing awful, getting mad that they suddenly can't win and demanding more changes to get wins. Eventually the game finally becomes damn near unplayably unbalanced because they decided to cater to a bunch of people who can't accept they're just not that good. I don't think the game should become top player centric either but settling for one group or the other is inevitably going to ruin things for everyone.
Edit: I'm betting that Bliz will fix counter swapping by just creating heroes that can't be countered. They'll make kits that are so overturned that it'll make more sense to only play the overpowered choices. That's when the game will truly and finally die.

Also it’s insane how badly balanced a game can be it’s like they racing against themselves to the worst balanced game
So many of the old GM tank players I used to play with/against, including pro players like Hawk, and Iron legit just quit because tank is just far too different from what it used to be. It's sad to watch what they've done to tank in this game. Game died for me whenever they decided countering kits over out playing was somehow okay.
6v6 pugs holding the season together for me genuinely
In a game where the most optimal play is to swap and have it be as powerful as it is, will always have the most slimiest players at the top. They are the only ones that are willing to be slave to this play style. I'll end this with a quote from one of the wisest men i know.

Overwatch was created as a counterswap game. I don't know why the devs keep trying to balance it around not being that, or act surprised when players do it. They fucked up by introducing Role Queue and kept going in that direction ever since. Surely there was another solution to the tank meta?
The most miserable games on tank are when the enemy holds tab to counter pick you, but you will not have a single teammate swap. Sometimes it's manageable with just going a counterpick yourself, but there are also times where the enemy is on a comp where it'll feel like shit no matter what you play because you don't have a team comp that would enable you. Your solo counterpick is not enough to be able to do anything in these situations.
I also know that most of the games are controllable by me. I hover around low masters now, I had been 4100 and T500 in OW1 and GM1 in OW2. I used to scrim 4200 lobbies, I'm not saying it's these games that are holding me back. I understand that I'm not GM/T500 anymore because I just don't grind the game like that and I've stopped VODing myself. However, these games really stick out and it makes the queuing experience feel miserable because they happen often enough that it's constantly in your head "is this gonna be one of those games?" every time I hit the queue button.
I've mostly stopped playing tank the last few seasons and have way more hours on supp/dps, which is CRAZY to me because all time I have an absolutely ludicrous amount of hours on tank and I used to almost never play the other roles. /rant.

I'd rather lose in 6v6 than win in 5v5. No lie, I stopped playing a few months ago, haven't looked back. This game has lost everything that made overwatch fun to play. Even when times were tough in overwatch 1 I still wanted to play.
I've been one tricking monke recently trying to learn a new hero. Placed gold and all my lobbies are people swapping to reaper, bastion. And the tank once they realize my winton cracked goes mauga lol
You should honestly play civilization five it’s a game that’s practically the complete opposite of overwatch slow turn base strategy game. You might enjoy it if you are going though you’re gonna have to use something called lekmod
I'm done with OW2 entirely until 6v6 returns. (Im an ow2 player btw) I swapped to playing Hawked, and even tho there are almost no players I'm still having more fun than ive had in OW since like, S6 or earlier.
Pickable passives arent even enough to make me redownload it, because its just another band-aid fix on top of band-aid fix, on top of band-aid fix, on top of band-aid fix, etc etc.
Man your's is the second comment I've read mentioning Hawked so I had to look it up as I'd literally never heard of it. Pity it seems it had a rough start in terms of marketing.

The simplest way of fixing this that would require the least effort imo is to just remove the ability to remove the ability to swap heroes. Is this the best way? Probably not, but its definitely the simplest that blizzard can do.

I only came back to OW because the Transformers collab. I queue tank and half the time I’m joining a losing game and my team is being steamrolled. Best I can do is even the playing field but still lose.
Not to mention EVERY game has a Sombra, which ironically benefits me because tanks are so stacked Sombra can’t do shit to me. But knowing every game the Sombra is hacking ME off cool down even though it’s not helping her in the slightest is still annoying.
Can’t forget the classic “Tank diff” every time you lose because the dps are pushing in front of the tank.

Top 500 gets you real life money. Top 500 means you can make content and people will watch for no reason other than top 500. I can almost guarantee these people in these lobbies, a handful are streaming on twitch or something or clipping stuff. Win by any means necessary, because it means popularity and money to be top 500. The actual gameplay doesn't matter. Having fun doesn't matter. I been also saying since OW2 released that ranks are fake. I'm a masters level player in terms of aim and general knowledge, and routinely get stuck plat-diamond. I even got stuck gold 1 on support for 1 week* straight with a 50% winrate on a "new" account, but that's a different thing. Gold plays totally different.

I tend to get stubborn about staying on the one I'm on if it's a difficult match.
I might try the counterswap cheese a bit more because of this video, see where it gets me.

Honestly, skill issue. Remember, we live in the universe where junkrat, hanzo, reaper, rein etc mains exist and they are having >50% winrate. Which proofs that if you good - you can win on any hero most of times, without counterswaps
Most of these people also play 1000 games a season and never break into top 500 unless you're Cloudy, Aquamarine, Argge (who is hardstuck masters, Hanzo is ass tho) And Sam. 99.9% of Gm/top 500 level players NEED to counterswap to win IF they are being counter swppaed themselves. Only like 1% of the 1% can 1 trick a hero to top 500 lmao.

I've not won a single game this season because I just wanna lock Reinhardt/Winston and play my heroes. Feels shit when they go Orisa/Hog and I can no longer play my characters
I play Genji a lot just because it makes me better at the game when I have to aim my shots better or look at my positioning and cooldowns, but when someone just go pharah, sombra, baptise, or any other fundamental broken character it’s make my hard work go down the trash. Why there is compensation for every nerf I don’t understand but what I do understand is that these compensations make the game worse or the same since the core issue never gets fixed. I also have to agree with the teammates not being as good as they should be for the rank they’re in as I see moiras with bad positioning or maugas that lose to Reinhardt in my games shows that when going up against someone who has some game sense can beat any meta user that just clicks one button for value. I love this game but they have to stop making the game where every character should be viable at every level of play is the stupidest idea any Developer has come up with.
They should change the name to counterswapstrikewatch.

I am diamond 2 on my main and played in masters games but I have an Smurf to play with my friend who is in silver/gold .. we’ve been on a losing streak.. like I actually have to play meta characters to win and I’ll obviously pop off but I can’t carry like I used to pre season 9 . Like it really depends on what characters ur playing rather than ur skill . I am just flabbergasted
just bring back 6v6 rebalance all the roles for 6v6 and add a cooldown on swapping and remove the passive ult charge you keep when swapping. Swapping should be a trade off, not a 1 button win option.

I do agree that there are definitely a lot of problems with the game right now, but it also sounds like you might need to just take a break. Just the feeling I am getting from the video.
To be honest even DPS have this issue at this point, where even DPS can't counter other DPS like Reaper for example, as long as the enemy isn't paying attention to you, you do well, BUT the second anyone lays eyes on Reaper, it's an instant throw pick.
I main Junker Queen right now and I feel like a throw pick just because the enemy picked Roadhog.
At this point, just use the league format with pick bans and no swapping mid match. Counter swapping is the least fun aspect of ow to me.
But this just then incentivies to ALWAYS pick the absolutely strongest hero available and not what you wanna play. Also, imagine you pick rein and you're against, Mauga, Phara, Echo, Ana, Lucio. What do you do?
It's OK guys, they saved the game by constantly buffing both damage and survivability on tanks! (Yes, it does feel like they're intentionally breaking the game lmao)
Yeah, I'm not optimistic about 6v6 even though it's what the game needs in order to be saved. The Aaron Keller blog seems like its due in at the same time as the Marvel Rivals beta, so this could be a funny moment if he missteps, which I expect him to.

The thing you said about being rank 1 and also hardstuck masters is so true. I was HARDSTUCK gold for like 2 seasons because of bad teammates. THE MOMENT I got good teammates and got plat i instantly climbed to diamond 1 on a crazy winstreak. Yeah maybe I couldve solo carried but like im good but not THAT good, but i still deserved high diamond/low masters and I knew it. Game just feels awful to play honestly like in ow1 you could hard carry any role if u had one or two throwers but now just one bad teammate and it all falls apart.
I am in diamond I have same issue as tank even as dps. But as tank one time me and the enemy tank were stuck at the select screen swapping it was straight up dogshit moment.

That's why l just play Ana, my favourite character, can't change her, regardless what happens in the game.
If l want to play other character, l just play QP, lifeweaver is also fun.

Did you ever try to play overwatch on different servers? A really different experience if you play in Asian servers for example. The large ping difference can be a huge detriment.
It's a huge shame overwatch 2 removed this feature of playing other servers despite clearly adjusting the settings in the launcher. Now you must use MINA to change servers

Was counter swapping always this bad in overwatch 2? I dont remember hearing about it nearly as much pre season 8 or 9. And there certainly wasnt any sitting in spawn swapping over and over

In high elo, it was, I think people just didn't pay attention to it early on, so no one talked about it. I was GM off tank in OW1. Didn't play the first 2 seasons of OW2. I came back and played 3 games in S3 (whichever meta it was that had Orisa being good). I quit after I experienced the exact scenario he described in this video about people swapping every time you swap. I go Orisa, he went Dva. I went Dva to match, he goes Zarya. So boring and no skill. That one match made me realize something was really wrong with the game and the little amount fun I had made me stop playing, the game played in a way that did not exist in OW1. I couldn't put my finger on it so I didn't quite realize the concept that made that match unfun was being counterswapped, but looking back, that was what it was. It def existed back then, I experienced it. I think it likely did not permeate lower elo until much later though because lower elos tend to just follow or emulate what better players do.

Top 500 is a 40 minute queue, for 10 minutes of counterswapping. Gm, Masters, and Diamond are the same, with shorter queues. Plat is a little like this, gold very minorly, and very rare in silver and bronze. That's like 80%+ of the playerbase that experiences this dogshit
I get what you are saying, and as someone who wants 6v6 also, I can sympathize with your video.
But honestly, I dont even know if 6v6 would help. Sure it would probably temper it, but after years of this, it might just a be a player issue now, and we may need to reprogramed

Limit swaping to once per 2 of your deaths. Cant w8 to see gm lvl players jump from map few times just to swap. Even tho i know that counterswaping is core to the game. Its just gets out of hand alot of times. Even in qp you try to play fun picks that you arent comfortable and if you did some impact its 3 ppl on other team try to counter yoy by swaping. Imagine having actual skill in a game instead of simple switch to dumv characters with negative skill expression just to counter someone.
