Very odd to me that Japan would have adopted Western style march music even though they did adopt of course (with a vengeance) Western style military technology for all the good it ever did them. But a good march all the same.
+Imperios The Battotai March still strikes me as essentially Western, but the Miyo-san is more like traditional Japanese music. The musical scales are different which is why non-Western music has no appeal to Western ears. Same goes for Arabic music. The only way around this problem is to Westernize such music which is what many non-Western musics have done. But why do people who have grown up in other than Western cultures like Western music so much. That is the great question! The Japanese for instance simply love Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Why?
>The musical scales are different which is why non-Western music has no appeal to Western ears. Speak for yourself. I was born in European Russia, but I enjoy a variety of ethnic music styles; never really immersed myself in anything Native American, but I have a number of favourite traditional compositions both in Europe and Asia, and a few in Africa. I like the Kuban Cossack Choir, Japanese ceremonial music, Korean drum music (I actually got to play Korean drums myself once), and Ottoman sufi chants - and Southern African hymns, which I find really elegant. My girlfriend also enjoys Armenian duduk music and, strangely enough, traditional Korean singing, which I find really unpleasant to the ear. As for classical music, I prefer Russian composers here. Shostakovitch, Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian, Schnitke, these are my favourites. Perhaps you weren't immersed too much in non-Western musical tradition? Try these compositions: ruclips.net/video/SdjgBhJQ4xg/видео.html ruclips.net/video/jqpFjsMtCb0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/_K-o6WNt5AQ/видео.html
Oh, and the Battotai March sounds Western because it was composed by a Western, in imitation of Japanese musical style. It has the characteristic Japanese syncopation, though. As for the scales, Japanese music uses the pentatonic scale, same as in European folk songs.
+Imperios In other words, it has been Westernized. That is my point exactly. Exotic music has to be cast in a Western scale or it will not be listened to by Westerners. But the mystery remains. Why do the Japanese like Western music so much? After all, it is not in their musical tradition. I have spent a considerable amount of time on various traditional folk music channels on YT from around the world, and all the non-Western ones are simply unlistenable. You can like all kinds of exotic music, but you are alone in that. Bach set the standard as to how we in the West approach music. Non-Western music comes across as sound to Western ears, not music. Maybe I like Western music too much!
