So thanks a lot! You just cost me a bunch of money. Watching you eat your way to Chicago whetted my appetite and so I changed my coach seat to a roomette on the California Zephyr. LOL I figured I'm 82 and what am I saving money for anyway. I am soooo looking forward to this trip in September. Choo choo!
Welcome to LA where I was born & raised. Union Station holds fond memories for me as I traveled from there to Indiana by myself when I was only 10 years old! It was an amazing adventure running through the cars of the train with another little girl I met that was traveling with her family. That established my love of trains and why I love your channel. That was in 1964!!!
I don't care where you two take a train to.....if you recommended a trip I'd consider going! Your vlogs are the epitome of useful and mesmerizing, and you help us see the utility and beauty in every experience! 👏🏼💯
I love you two. You have made my Amtrak trips amazing. I love the trains. So far I've done the SW Chief. I hope to save enough to do more. I'm on SSI so it takes a while to save enough to do it. But thank you for your guides. Love ya.
I know this video is a year old but I am on the Southwest Chief (Chicago to Los Angeles) right now (July 31, 2023 - Aug 2, 2023). I’m in a roomette. Definitely an adjustment sleeping on a train. The crew and the food have been fantastic. Had a perfectly cooked steak last night. This afternoon, you can bet I’m trying the cheeseburger. What an adventure!
Have traveled Southwest chief twice, and love this trip from Chicago to Las Angeles. Going to be traveling on Southwest chief for a third time next February 2023. This train trip is fantastic and the sights are so beautiful.
Many many years ago the Santa Fe Chief use to run through Glendora, CA, my home town. I'd go watch the train go through every chance I got. Watching that train started me on my life long love of trains. Great video, as always! Thank you!
This is a historic route, and I've seen quite a few changes. The Southwest Chief used to stop in Pasadena CA, Northeast of L.A., where most celebs would board & disembark during the '50's on ATSF's all sleeper Super Chief to/from Chicago. There was an all coach bi-level El Capitan train which ran the same route. For those with claustrophobia, I would recommend booking 2 roomettes so that 2 companions can sleep in the bottom berth. It costs more, but enjoyable for both travelers-especially Seniors with mobility issues.
I’ve traveled this route at least 30 times since childhood and before Amtrak when it was still Santa Fe. The train was called the El Capitan. Still prefer the train to air travel! Thank you for taking me with you on your many train adventures.
I just did this trip 2 days ago and it was my first Amtrak trip. You guys inspired me to take it when I discovered you this past year. Your tips made me understand what to expect and I was able unplug and relax. I can’t wait for my next trip!
Hi!! How was your experience in the train? I am thinking about it because I hate to fly, but I know it’s a long trip. I am used to drive for many hours so I am a “though” girl, but I would like you to share your experience.
I'm taking the Southwest Chief (LA -> CHI) next week! And then the Lakeshore Limited to NYC. I've watched so many of your videos to get ready. Can't wait :)
The Lakeshore Limited is quick one (19hrs) and it travels along the Hudson River (from Albany to NYP) before it arrives at Penn Station in Manhattan. It's fantastic.
@@rasta487 It was great! I loved the Southwest Chief leg of the trip the most - it was so relaxing and my train attendant was amazing. The Lakeshore Limited felt like a different experience, much busier and more crowded. But overall, I really enjoyed it and am hoping to do another trip someday.
I love it. My train got cancelled, but I flew to San Diego. My last day in San Diego I took the train to L.A. The station in L.A. is beautiful. I can't wait to plan my long distance train trip that doesn't get cancelled. You guys have really changed my mind about trains. I'm taking the train to Maryland in a couple of weeks. I'm still excited.
Yay! Thank you! A new Amtrak video to enjoy! I love your videos! So much better than watching any current events. Allie, you do such a great job editing.
Awesome! My son is going to be excited to know he just has to bring pieces to play Chess. He's all about traveling as lightly as possible... and playing Chess.
Another great video! My coffee always seems to taste better on Friday mornings!! You two are doing such a great job with your videos! Southwest Chief is definitely on my bucket list!

RE Shower Controls: First week of May2022 we rode The City of New Orleans to Chicago then The California Zephyr to Sacramento. Bedroom both trains. In both bedroom showers the water flowed as soon as the step 1 handle was turned away from the max cold position. Stopped flow when turned back to max cold. Never used the step 2 button. So, FYI, be aware (beware). In the room vent on the first train someone had DIY inserted foam pieces to block air to one end of the bunk bed. 2nd train had a built-in section to keep air away from the top bunk. BTW, I had the chocolate flourless desert 😋
Allie and Rob, I had such a great time traveling with you during this trip. You take me places that I’m unable to travel due to a lifetime of fibromyalgia pain and fatigue. Wonderful! I used to take the Coast Starlight a few times per year going from home in LA to Portland OR for school. I'd meet schoolmates who'd get on (or off, on the way home) in Sacramento and Davis and we'd have a great time the rest of the way. Going through the Cascade Mountains in the view car was awesome!
This brought back memories. My wife and I took this exact route from L.A. to Chicago last month starting May 12. My first ever Amtrak ride. I am very active in the Amtrak Fans group on Facebook and whenever newbies ask questions about something you've covered in a video, I always recommend your channel and give them the link so they can get directly to it.
@@GroundedLifeTravel What a shame. I would have loved to have had a chance to say "hi" and tell you in person how much I enjoy your videos. We took the Empire Builder from CHI to SEA leaving CHI on May 22. I think we just missed each other on that train, too.
Rob, anything tastes good if you slice it thin, fry it, and salt it liberally. lol ETA: I really enjoy your Amtrak videos. They are thorough, informative, and really show your enjoyment of train travel as well as your understanding and acceptance of its limitations.
Lucky! We were supposed to do this trip next Friday. But Amtrak canceled our trip😡. Only explanation we received was that they were pulling the train car we were assigned to. And the only thing they had available was Coach. No thanks! It was hard for my husband to get time off work. And unfortunately because of the way their vacation request process goes, we will not be able to plan this trip again until next year. We have traveled on Amtrak throughout the years on the Coast Starlight up to Seattle. We have never encountered a cancellation like this.

Besides Jack Stack BBQ, you could walk across that foot bridge in KC and go to Lidia's Kansas City Restaurant for some nice Italian. You could go a few blocks farther to the art district downtown for some boutiques, to Mannie's Mexican, Oklahoma Joe's BBQ and some other wonderful eateries within a few blocks. There are also a number of bars in the area with unique cocktails. In any event, thanks for the recommendations!
Thanks so much for this video. I'm taking the Southwest Chief in the opposite direction in just 1 week and I can't wait! I've been looking a videos about the trip and yours is the best one I've seen and I especially like that it is so recent which really helps. Good luck on all your journeys.
The train you passed in Gallup name Railrunner is a really cool train service from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Belen, New Mexico. It does travel as far west as Gallup and as east as Tucumcari, New Mexico (I think) The market in Albuquerque actually services people on the street, and the apartments above it 😁 I love your videos! @@GroundedLifeTravel of course! They do have a very unique design! It's super affordable and makes frequent stops along the way in smaller New Mexico towns. I hope you guys get the opportunity to ride it soon! Look out for roadrunners when you pass through again!
The Rail Runner only travels North-South between Santa Fe and Belen. It doesn't travel East-West at all, they were near ABQ when they saw the RR. It's fun take the RR from ABQ to Belen and visit the old original Harvey House.
The Roadrunner only runs from Santa Fe to Belen. I live in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque and train station is in walking distance from where I live. It only runs north and south.
We’ve booked a roomette on SW Chief, KC to Flagstaff and back, for end of September. First sleeper trip for both of us, and your videos have really helped us with plans and expectations. Thanks!
The food looked absolutely amazing. Holy smokes I wish we had this on the EAST COAST! I take the Vermonter at least 2x per week and proper food would be awesome. Just something like the Bordrestaurant on the ICE.
I really enjoy your videos. I had taken this trip with my mother for Amtrak Vacations. My I make a suggestion for future videos is to talk about some the downsides of rail travel and how to problem solve when events happen. This same train was delayed for 18 hours and we ended having to make additional arrangements to get to our destination. In my opinion it's important to share examples of things that can happen and how to navigate them.
I remember Albuquerque traveling to or from (?) Chicago to LA or LA to Chicago. I remember the vendors selling earrings and trinkets with tons of turquoise. Warm and beautiful, but we didn’t stray too far from the platform.
Amtrak gave me a Roomette from Lany to LA when the Starlight is cancelled due to weather from LA to SJ. They routed me in Business Class on the Surfliner to Santa Barbara and bus to San Jose!
Raton is famous in railroad history. When the track was being built over the Raton Pass two railroads battled for possession. I think there is a museum in Raton with more information.
Going on Amtrak in mid-September Capital CLE to CHI and Southwest Chief to LAX always enjoyed the trip. Don't forget the lounge in Chicago and Los Angeles when in a sleeper which are really nice. Plus don't forget Red Cap service, except CLE, take you both from and to your train. I am on a cane and appreciate the service. CLE to CHI in coach as it is only around six hours but to the coast will have a bedroom for a lot more space and private john and shower. Always had a great experience since 2013, except for 2020 and COVID. Your coverage of the trip is really good and does cover the high points.
My sister and I were on the Southwest Chief last summer - Chicago to Albuquerque and back. We did not have an observation car but spent most of our time in the cafe car. The dining car was not available yet because of Covid restrictions
I wish I could afford to travel to the US to try some of these trips, and handle the 15 hour flight (I'm 6'1" and my partner has mobility issues, so a 15 hour economy flight is out of the question sadly), but at least I can live vicariously via these travel vlogs.

Love you guys. You are such a sweet couple who gives good information. Love your Amtrak videos.
Thanks so much!
Great Video, one of you best yet. I really enjoyed this one.
Thanks so much!
Now you've got me interested in bringing a multi-tool to remove that vent and turn it around facing the door.
Hahaha
We always bring our own maple syrup from our own sugar bush. If you see us we'll share
We'd love some!
The food looked absolutely amazing. Holy smokes I wish we had this on the EAST COAST! I take the Vermonter at least 2x per week and proper food would be awesome. Just something like the Bordrestaurant on the ICE.
Yes, the west coast food is better, but we've heard something is coming to the east coast soon!
Great idea, thanks!
I remember Albuquerque traveling to or from (?) Chicago to LA or LA to Chicago. I remember the vendors selling earrings and trinkets with tons of turquoise. Warm and beautiful, but we didn’t stray too far from the platform.
Yes, that is the place, always some action at that stop!
Thanks for the video. So, relaxing. Nice People, too.
11:20 nice to see a fellow Braves fan!
Go Braves!
Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your videos and plan to take this train next year.
Awesome, have fun!
We just did the Southwest Chief from ABQ to LA! Had a roomette for the overnight.
Thanks for sharing!
Amtrak gave me a Roomette from Lany to LA when the Starlight is cancelled due to weather from LA to SJ. They routed me in Business Class on the Surfliner to Santa Barbara and bus to San Jose!
Oh wow, that's great!
Raton is famous in railroad history. When the track was being built over the Raton Pass two railroads battled for possession. I think there is a museum in Raton with more information.
Thanks for sharing the info!
Thanks for sharing!
Love your videos they have been so helpful, Planning this trip in sept !
You guys always give great presentations.
Thanks!
My sister and I were on the Southwest Chief last summer - Chicago to Albuquerque and back. We did not have an observation car but spent most of our time in the cafe car. The dining car was not available yet because of Covid restrictions
Thanks for sharing!
Good job on the narration, Alee.
Thanks!
I'm booked on this in September! Can't wait!
It's official, I'm going to find a way to take this trip! Awesome
Have fun!
Hey, I spent the night at LA Union Station a couple weeks ago, and leaving on the LS/MRR to meet up with the SWC in KC tonight. Looking forward to it!
Have fun! KC is a great station!
I love these videos. Ive taken trips based on your vlogs!
Oh, Chicago! I can't believe you were here! I used to work right near there. It's so weird to see it on a screen.
So cool!
Always enjoy your videos….I’m an avid rail buff and have travelled many of the routes you have filmed.
Cool, thanks!
I love your videos. This is the next trip we want to take.
Awesome! Have fun!
Love the background music....very relaxing
Glad you like it
@@GroundedLifeTravel I have tried to find it but haven't had any luck....thanks so much for all the great content !
I'm leaving on the 19th of June on this route. Thank you for sharing this. It helped me formulate a plan! So excited to be on the rails again.
Glad it was helpful! Have a great trip!
Allie you got your hair cut! It looks beautiful! So sassy!
Oh thank you!
I wish I could afford to travel to the US to try some of these trips, and handle the 15 hour flight (I'm 6'1" and my partner has mobility issues, so a 15 hour economy flight is out of the question sadly), but at least I can live vicariously via these travel vlogs.
Thanks for watching!
Well, tomorrow is the big day! The SW Chief to Chicago then the Lake Shore Limited to Albany/Rensselaer NY!! BTW, while telling friends about our upcoming trip, if I can't answer about a specific route, sleeping accommodations, or other items, I always recommend Grounded Life Travel to get the information that one needs. Safe travels to you on your future travels!! 🙂
Great video!!!!! Love the long distance trip videos
Thanks!
