  • Join us on our Amtrak vacation from New York City to Los Angeles. This 7 day journey will take us on the Lake Shore Limited, California Zephyr as well as the Coast Starlight. We take a few days at each spot to enjoy some local fare. We stay in an Amtrak roomette on each train for our comfort. We hope you enjoy this trip along with us. On this route we rode in both a Superliner roomette and a Viewliner roomette and got to eat from the flexible dining and traditional dining menus. We loved going from NYC to LA on Amtrak!

We can't thank you enough for all of the inspiration and incentive to travel your videos provide. We've been following you for over a year and have become avid fans of train travel. Because of you we are making wonderful memories criss-crossing the USA. We have the Amtrak card, have made great use of the coupons, points, and perks. Amtrak owes the both of you much more than the points and coupons you've earned - because thru you their riders have greatly increased. Always look forward to your videos and really hope to meet you on a future cross country trip!

I absolutely loved watching your journey. Several years ago my daughter wanted the two of us to take this same trip from NY to LA but I said no because I thought the trip was too long for me. Now, after watching this video, I am sorry that I didn't go. Watching your video has given me a different perspective regarding Amtrak, especially riding in one of the roomettes. Thank you for sharing your journey. I didn't expect to watch the entire video, but the two of you made it so interesting that I couldn't stop watching it.

Agree with you about Amtrak coffee! It's surprisingly good. After discovering that a few trips ago, it's now something I actually look forward to every time! If you're in a sleeper car, definitely take advantage of it. There's nothing like sipping a good cup of coffee while taking in some amazing views. On Amtrak, it's the views, the crews and the brews!

"The best views" on the Coast Starlight are many. Yes the California coastline is absolutely breathtaking, but when you're winding through the mountains in (it's either northern Oregon or southern Washington) it's awfully nice, as well. Glad you had a good trip and got to see most of Amtrak's best sights.

I took my first Amtrak trip back in September, my first ride since I was a little girl, and after all of the hassle and hustle and bustle (and stuck in the airport, waiting in security lines, missing your connecting flight, AND being stuck overnight in a hotel with no luggage)... it was the most RELAXING and stress free trip I've ever taken (and that includes driving since I live along the I-95 corridor!). Your videos remind me of that, and I love it! I was going to do it for Christmas, but the airlines messed up so badly that I couldn't get the business class or roomette, so I decided to let all of the madness die down before doing it again!

Many years ago my Mom and I took the same trip - NYC-LA. The only difference I noticed is that once we got to Chicago (Lake Shore Limited), we changed trains to either the Zephyr or another train on that route which took us to LA - no third train. We came into LA from the south, after leaving Las Vegas the train went south then up to LA - the trip took three days from NYC-LA. It was a great trip then and I see it's still a great trip. Thanks for sharing!

I've enjoyed watching many of your train travel videos, they are always informative and enjoyable. I'll probably be planning a rail trip for later this summer. When you were showing how to set up your bed the first night it brought to mind how I like to travel when in a roomette. I like to sit in the larger of the two seats and I set the other seat flat as if for the bed so that I can have my legs up on the flat seat (yes, I take my shoes off and have a blanket on the flat seat) and there's still enough of a gap to put my legs down between the seats.

I make & can my own cranberry sauce. I love to make brie on croute with it for an appetizer. Lay pastry down on a cookie sheet, place a wheel of brie ( I personally remove most of the white wax), add homemade cranberry sauce on top of brie, and fold pastry around brie and sauce pinching to close. Brush top of pastry with butter and bake at 375° until pastry is golden brown…. In place of cranberry sauce, I’ve also used strawberry jam, orange marmalade, fig preserves, apricot jam, etc. you can also add nuts, as well….. serve with crackers of your choice.

Another option is taking the Amtrak Surfliner to LA and then Take the Texas Eagle. Another option is take the Amtrak Surfliner to LA, then Amtrak Coast Surfliner to Emeryville then take the Zephyer to Chicago, The last 2 options are take the Amtrak Surfiner to LA Coast Startlight to either Portland or Seattle and then take the Empire Builder either from Portland or Seattle to Chicago.

Long distance train trips are always unforgettable experiences. The CA Zephyr was once 3 trains or approx. 15 cars combined from Chicago-The Zephyr which ended in Oakland, The Pioneer-ending in Portland, & the Desert Wind-ending in L.A. Heading East these trains would meet in Denver-Pioneer & Desert Wind- Salt Lake City. Sadly this service was discontinued in the late '90's. There's a doorbell (buzzer) situated on the lighted lettered box above each door of Deluxe Bedrooms in Superliner I's & II's few people know about.

@@GroundedLifeTravel We are taking the Coast Starlight to Sacramento, then California Zephyr to Denver. We will spend time with our oldest daughter for a couple of days. Then, we take the California Zephyr to Chicago. We then take the Capital Limited to Washington DC and from there the Northeast Regional to BWI. We live near BWI. My wife is from Japan and we frequently travel by train in Japan. The Japanese are very proud of their train systems. Enjoy your RUclips posts and always look forward to them.

Since you like Salmon, try this when you get home. Sprinkle some salt and pepper, dill weed, and lemon juice, then lay some sliced onions over the fillets. And cook at 350 deg. for 30 min. While waiting for them to cook mix up some moyo or better yet Miracle Whip, sour cream, lemon juice, dill weed to use as a sauce over the fillets when there done cooking.

Good thing you aren't on a (tight schedule) and you can (relax) on this train trip. but it still looks enjoyable even though mishaps can happen in train life.

The views across the states are so beautiful. I did have the opportunity to ride the entire Pacific Surfliner route from SLO to San Diego. I had an event in San Diego so it was the perfect time to ride the train. I really enjoyed seeing the coastline of California. :) Love your videos!

On The 20th Century, each room had its own SPACIOUS bathroom!
Here, you must trudge down the hall in the middle of the night.
    NOT GOOD.
