    Curious about the choice in loadout... I'm OK with the 4 JDAMs on a F-14D, as it was capable of carrying them and using them. The LANTIRN pod is on the correct station (THANK YOU! :P), but what I'm curious about is the Phoenix. Yes it can be mounted there, yes it has been mounted there, but the loadout combining a single Phoenix with the 4 JDAM's seems a bit dubious to me. The why is more complicated... the Wing Pylon mounted Phoenix has a hell of a lot of drag (so does the LANTIRN pod, I guess) and so it was rarely mounted there. I looked through all the photos I had of F-14's carrying LANTIRN pods and if there is a missile mounted opposite (the vast, vast, vast majority carried nothing there), it was an AIM-7M(H).
    I'm also curious about the pose you have her in. I'm sure it was shown to display the awesome amount of detail of the model, but when parked, the F-14 would never be extended out like this. It takes up too much room on the deck of a carrier! :) Even on land, to avoid unnecessary stress on the wing box, the wings were folded back. This required flaps to be up, the leading edge extensions retracted and the spoilerons (over the wing) would be retracted. Also, on a carrier landing, only the DLC spoilers would be up (the smaller inner spoilers), the outer edge ones would be down. They are also not used on carrier landings or on the carrier deck. Their primary function, with weight on the wheels, is anti-skid control and air braking on land based landings. They aren't used on the carrier because the carrier deck coating makes it not necessary. Refueling probe would likewise not be out.
    I also noticed the model kit is missing the single most important detail of an F-14 Tomcat! The Yaw String!!! No F-14 should go to war without it! :)
    Again, excellent job on the model! Love it!

    • @ScaleHangar182
      @ScaleHangar182  4 года назад +2

      Originally, I was going to go with different load out, but I placed the wrong pylons. Also the Phoenix missile wss last minute decision as I had sparrow ready but I decided that Phoenix just look better, and this is where we going to positioning aircraft, extended slats, flaps and spoilers and air brakes, yes it looks unrealistic, especially without pilot in there to do perhaps a quick pre flight check. But again, I didnt find the decent looking resin pilots to fit there, so i just decided o make it this way just for display purposes, because I am going to build more tomcats, in different positions and more realistic loadouts. I hope this helped. Oh and yawn string, I was thinking about it at the beginning, but eventually i just forgot 😄

    • @Whiskey11Gaming
      @Whiskey11Gaming 4 года назад

      @@ScaleHangar182 I figured as much! :) I'm just a stickler for the details.
      Overall, how would you rate this model to build? It's the ONLY model of the F-14 I've seen that has the ability to extend the spoilerons and DLC flaps. I really want to build one in full landing configuration (You know... full on Turkey mode! :P) and build a mural of it landing on the carrier deck. Can't do that with any of the other models.

I remember getting of duty and hit the showers after a 12 hours of flight ops and every crevice and crease on my body had black soot in it. I'm building the F-4B Sundownwers equivalent of this right now, thanks for the faux grime tips. F-4's were hydraulic sprinklers. I'm gunna needs some big red streaks down the belly.

      As a long time lover of the Tomcat - I whole heartedly agree. She was big, and yet graceful.
      As a former USN AD (Aviation Machinist Mate), it was the right choice to retire the frame. It was pushing 30+ years old, and was a maintenance nightmare. The time it takes to repair the hornet vs the tomcat is staggering. It takes days to remove an engine from the 14. It is mere hours on the hornet. Every time the Tomcat went super sonic (especially at low altitudes) the AM (Air Framer) would about cry, because they knew something broke.
      As far as the motors go. The "D" block aircraft had great engines. Same motors being used in the Falcon right now. They are loud and damn powerful.

      @@HvyMetal4Ever The F-14B used the same engines as the F-14D model. The GEF110 was also NOT the engine Grumman wanted, but they made it work! The aircraft was designed with the P&W F401-400 engines in mind, these provided essentially the same thrust as the F110's did in the B and D models.
      I do believe that the F-14 platform was intentionally hobbled by politicians with the desire to line their buddy's pockets rather than by buying the best aircraft for the job. The ASF-14 was an epic program evolution that Grumman was ready to propose. It would have utilized much of the tech of the defunct A-12 Avenger II program while integrating modern weaponry into the F-14 airframe... I can't even begin to imagine how many AIM-120's could be carried by one with the right modifications, but just the thought of an AESA radar the size of the AWG-9 gives me a joygasm... essentially, Grumman was ready to replace every aircraft on a carrier deck except the ASW aircraft (Viking at the time) and the helicopters... they had developed a buddy refuel tank that fit in the tunnel of the F-14 and allowed it to buddy refuel... the AESA radar was prepared to limit the need for E2C's, they had jammer pods ready to make an EF-14, and it would have been done in an aircraft designed with maintenance in mind and significant improvements to the parts that commonly failed.
      Instead, what happened, was the A+ program fixed the TF30 engine problem and lead to the B... those are all airframes that pre existed... The F-14D program was cut short at just 37 new airframes. Analysis of those airframes proved that the problem with the F-14 and maintenance was aging airframes and not the design. The design did have some compromises (8 hour engine removal vs the Hornet's 2-3, etc), but again, Grumman was ready to make changes to improve maintenance... one of the big changes the D had was the implementation of a similar Maintenance Monitoring program as the Hornet, but it never got fully fleshed out before the F-14 was forced into retirement.

      @@HvyMetal4Ever I know that the a models were aging and horrible on maintenance. I thought that the d model greatly improved the maintenance. A new F-14 with new engines avionics and aesa radar would have required much less maintenance, had far greater range, been able to carry more weapons than the F-18, and an immense improvement in radar range. I still think a super Tomcat would have been a much better idea than a super Hornet.

      I never had Hasegawa kit, even if I want to get one, these are quite expensive now and for that price you have hobby boss tomcat, or ass little more and get AMK or Tamiya

      Scale Hangar 182 thanks! Perhaps I will concert my Hasegawa F-14B into that same D from VF-31. Decals where out of the box or aftermarket?

    Sir you an artist. I tried to build models but never succeeded. Even the airbrush was a challenge. I just dont have the skill so thank you for sharing. Any plans on making videos teaching a little about airbrushing? By the way your music selection is great!
