Hi Tom Andrews The Hangar Deck, thanks, I'm glad you like those info banners! I just need to watch out for those occasional typos, I'm the world's worst typist! 😅
I had stacks of boxes of these plastic models in the garage for years that I never had a chance to build or put together. This is fantastic! I just imagine it was me doing this. I would skip many days of lunch just to use my lunch money to buy these at the department store including paint and accessories. Never could afford an air brush. The radio recording during the WWII days is icing on the cake!
Nice work. I've never seen a whole model painted whilst still on the sprue. I also really enjoyed your chipping technique. Thank you again for sharing your skills.
Hi David, thanks! I try to mix it up a little each time and try different things. Since many of the parts on the sprue needed to have the same paint applied, I just left them on there. 😉
You certainly have improved your painting and weathering skills since 2001.....great job....very enjoyable watch and very glad to see a WW2 model (not that I have any issues with the modern ones you build). Your work is full of tips and the facts behind the build are always a point of interest.....thank you!!
What a GREAT job you did on this. I LOVE build videos of these classic, older kits especially ones from the 1/48th Pro Modeler series. In your capable hands, you prove how good they can look compared to many of the newer kits five times as expensive. In addition, your videos are so well "produced." All the facts and figures you supply on the subject aircraft; your clear, concise construction sequence and techniques; identifying products you used as well as the music you've included. Keep up the good work. I am very glad to be one of your loyal subscribers. THANK YOU!
Max, I'm going to have to jump in here on Lawrence's comment. Hope Lawrence doesn't mind (the rest of the thread seems to be in another place). Fantastic build. Just goes to show what can be achieved , with good techniques, thoughtfully/ skillfully applied. Well done!
Max, As always, a superb build, particularly the weathering and the techniques used. Also, your video style (commentary, historical information, music, etc) is by far my favorite. I enjoy watching your videos as much as I enjoy doing my own builds! Thanks for sharing - looking forward to the next one.
I built this same Pro Modeler kit in the over all sea blue version off the Bunker Hill. It was a beautiful kit then, and I plan to build another in the near future. Same version, but with lots of aftermarket detailing. Along with other books to research, IPMS Stockholm is a great website for research. On the later Helldivers (late 1944 and 45) the cockpit was olive interior green, with everything else inside chromate green. The earlier Accurate Miniatures kit is also great. The cockpit on that one was painted with an in house "Curtiss interior green," or olive drab with some flat yellow in it. This is a great model, and you did a great job on this kit.
Every time I read statistics about how many aircraft our country built for WW2 I am thoroughly amazed. Over 7000 of this type alone in 2 years. Just think about the amount of work and raw materials it takes to do this. What an amazing feat!
Hi Crimson_Ghost, I agree! I was dumbfounded that 7,042 Helldivers were produced in just two years despite the early problems. It is a testament to the will and fortitude of the American people back then.
Good job! I was surprised to see that Revell fixed that old Monogram kit. I built it back in the 80s with the folding wings and retractable landing gear. Those old Monogram kit's were kind of toy like. But I always saw them as a blank canvas that you could make a masterpiece out of with a little bit of time and detailing. And they were a lot of fun to build when you were a kid. The old Monogram P40 is still one of my favorites and they all bring back a lot of fond memories. 🙂
This is not the old Monogram kit from 1961. This is the model released by Monogram under their Pro Modeler label as a new tool in 1997. Later issued by Revell after they had absorbed Monogram into their product range.
Can we have a tour of all your model builds? I think it would be awesome to see all the amazing models you have made throughout the years and how far your skills have come. I started watching your videos about 2 months ago and it reminded me of when my dad use to built models when I was a kid and how I would play with them and break them (sorry dad). I then showed my dad your videos and he was hooked on watching some videos with me. We then went and bought a model kit which was the f-22 raptor. We began building it having fun but I had to go back home with my mom and I had to finish on my own. It took awhile but I finished it and I’m proud of it even though it looks like it should be burned in fire. I’m now working on the f-14 tomcat model kit and I can’t wait to finish it. I don’t know where I was going with this but I want to thank you for uploading these videos I enjoy every minute of them and I started building some of my own models. I hope you continue and have fun building them.
Thanks Fernando, I'm glad you're having fun which is the most important part and that you and your father are taking time to share the hobby together when you can! I don't have too many of my earlier models, maybe just a handful. I'm always afraid to move them because something always seems to break off. But, I'll keep your suggestion in mind. It may be enjoyable for the viewers to see.
Great musical background! For me, maybe the best music that ever made in the USA. The appropriate background to build an aviation legend, like the "Helldiver". Fantastic building, from the start to the end. Great technique and superb skill on your model. Congratulations for a great work. Thank you for share your skills, in this great video. Greetings from Guatemala, the Land of Quetzal Bird, simbol of Freedom. Have a Happy New Year 2022.
Love the build. Makes me wish I had bought the kit when I had the chance. I have the Monogram version of this kit to build. Interesting note, the Army Air Corp wanted a dive bomber before the war. They placed an order for several of these planes on December 31st, 1940. They made a few changes to the plane. Larger wheels, removal of the tailhook, removal of the folding wing mechanisms and a few other minor changes. The plane was based on the SB2C-1. They were designated A-25A Shrike. Info from Squadron Signal aviation book on the SB2C Helldiver. I was a volunteer at an airshow one year and had the priviledge of keeping the crowd back from a Helldiver as it started up to do flyovers for the show. That prop sent every tiny piece of sand and rocks flying. Glad I was wearing long pants. The best sounds to hear are the sound of a radial engine and merlin roaring to life followed by allison engines when it comes to planes.
Thanks Max. Dogs are the best and faithful friends. Thank you for your excellent and useful videos. I will wating for the next. Greetings and blessings for you Max, from Guatemala, the Land of Quetzal Bird simbol of Freedom. Sorry about my bad english.
I feel you. I lost my cat, Aku, a couple of months ago... It is a nice tribute to give to your doggo in the video. I did something similar. Since it's kind of illegal or at least not allowed I can't tell.. But I feel you. Also... I really like your builds, the history you give before the build and so on. This build with building the paints from aluminium up is great. I've wondered why nobody does it. Keep it up, looks neat.
Thank you! wonderful build. Also deeply appreciate your taking the time to explain all you did. It's a great help for someone like myself with very modest skills. Thanks again sir.
Beautiful build, I love the realistic (as in, attempting to mimic what actually happens to the real plane) weathering technique, I have always wanted to try but never had the guts, and you made it look amazing!
Lexington.......enterprise..........another great video and build. I love watching your videos, good information, interesting stuff, cool photos and music. Keep up the good work
Hey, thanks for making your videos with such attention to detail with little factoids and period footage/audio. I have a question about decals if anyone can help. I’ve been having problems with decals that bond too quickly and tightly, after only a couple seconds (even with plenty of liquid around) so they become unworkable and stuck in the wrong position. Are there any tricks for these problems? It’s almost impossible to slide them on perfectly the first time and they slide and bind randomly while trying to get them aligned right.
Hi Captain Cruise, if I have this kind of problem, I tend to use a lot more water from the decal dish. The model will be dripping wet in the area, but I can easily float the decal still and not have it bind. On the other hand, this will dilute/wash away any decal setting solution you've pre-wetted the model with.
I'd say your skills have improved since the first one; as I would expect after 18 years! LOL! I work in aviation radio (Ground Traffic Control) and I have to say, I really like your tone and narration.
Have you seen the HPH model's 1\32 Helldiver resin kit, they have thier instructions to all thier kits on site.Good for basic interior references.Just used thier Fw189 instructions for GWH \48 fw189 kit.Great channel.
....if I remember correctly, Captain Jocko Clark turned the USS Yorktown around, sailed back to port, demanded the Helldivers to be for swapped SBD Dauntless machines....as the SB2C's wasn't good enough to use as anchors! 😳😲😆😂
Well, from the looks of it the box is pretty big. I'm going to go and hope it's a B-52 (with an x-15?). I love your videos, rain noses are nice as well. You keep making your models better and better!
If that video was 2 hours long,I would have happily watched it.Great video as well as the wonderful build.I seldom like music on model videos but you had a great choice that was both interesting but not overbearing. In fact some of the tunes help to enhance the view of the build.A balance like that is hard to achieve. Also I liked the camera angles to show the work. They were clear enough to see how the part looked and how it was transformed by picking up on subtle details.Sometimes when the angle of filming is too flat fixed and straight it’s hard to see subtle details like weathering being added by the modeler.Only later when we see a different view we see the effect. This is my second view of this video as I got this kit in my stash and finally its on my build list.
Hi The majestic magnificent, thanks so very much for your very generous comments, I surely do appreciate them and it helps keep me motivated for the channel's work. Good luck on your build! 😃
Nice job. The diving brakes did "give the pilots more time". All purpose built dive bombers have them to prevent overspeed in a dive, the cause of compressability.
My dad flew Helldivers and may other carrier and land based Navy aircraft from 1942 - 1962. No matter the plane he told me his favorite was 20mm canon.
its a 1/350 fletcher class destroyer.. Tom, I've been modeling for 55 years and I still learn something new from your builds..always enjoy the background audio and info..only gripe is put some crew figures with the aircraft, they establish scale of the aircraft ( they'rs not UAV's ) lol...as always another great build and video..hope you do the 1/48 L-39 soon..
Hi Peter, as to the Helldiver there was no pilot figure. I have indeed omitted pilots and aircrews in the past. I think figure painting is probably the hardest thing to pull off in the model world. I haven't built up the confidence to try that avenue yet.
HELLO, GREETINGS FROM VENEZUELA, I LIKED YOUR TECHNIQUE OF GIVING A BRIGHT ALUMINUM LAYER TO THE FUSELAGE AND ALL THE PARTS OF THE MODEL BEFORE ASSEMBLING, GOOD DATA FOR ME. THANK YOU, NOW WHEN YOU GAVE THE ZING CHROME COAT TO THE BOMB BAY, I NOTICED THAT YOU PUT THE LINE PANEL ON IT BUT THE QUESTION IS, DID YOU APPLY THE LINE PANEL WITHOUT THE GLOSSY ENAMEL BASE? AH THE HISTORICAL ATMOSPHERE WITH THE MUSIC OF GLEN MILLER IS GREAT, I AM NOT CLEAR ON THE DARKEST COLOR YOU USED, WHICH IS IT? THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR WORK. PD :EXCUSE MY BAD ENGLISH, I USE GOOGLE TRANSLATOR TO COMMUNICATE
Hi J C R, I used the panel liner without a gloss base to create the effect of seeping fluids into the paint. The main body color is Tamiya XF-17 "Sea Blue". Glad you liked the video, and thanks for watching! 😃
I loved your work, especially using metal, interior green and then the actual colour which is realistic in my mind and yours. You are the first modeller that I have seen using that method which I have always thought about along the same kinda lines as the way to go. My only comment is that I thought maybe you should have mixed maybe 15 % > 20% white into your sea & intermediate sea blue colours just to simulate the sun fade of the harsh Pacific Ocean sun and salt for a little bit more realistic effect. Cheers mate 🍻, love ya stuff.🇦🇺
Another great build. I am working on this very kit right now, although it's the Accurate Miniatures boxing and I am using the Atlantic City dark gull grey scheme. Did you find the clear plastic was a problem? My front windscreen is a blob, with no real framing and most other clear parts are equally bad.
Hi Rich, the cockpit glass pieces were pretty nice and detailed. The very front windscreen could have been a little better, though. The only real weakness with the kit is the main landing gear attach points to the inside of the wings. They're very flimsy and a good bump would probably break them.
Fabulous looking Helldiver mate. What a difference 18 years of experience makes aye? You've given me some cool ideas for when the time comes to build my RNZAF Dauntless and Ventura! A small tip re the aircraft canopies. I like to paint the exterior of the clear parts with the interior colour first and then paint the exterior colour over the top. This gives the effect of looking like the interior was painted from the inside as well which is very tricky to do. As for the mystery model... at a guess I'd say possibly either a 1/48 scale Grumman Avenger or Hellcat, or if a 1/350 scale ship.... perhaps the USS Missouri?
Hi Harpoon2theRescue, Thanks much! I have a couple of WWII aircraft that have been added to the pile of projects, but both of them are dive bombers. I would love to do those larger bombers though! The B-24 I know less about overall and it would give me a good chance to educate myself more on its history and capabilities. Thanks for the suggestions, we have to get these icons on the short list! 😃
@@MaxAfterburner I must admit that since finding your channel I've been slowly gathering modeling supplies for re-entry into a hobby I last enjoyed as a kid. Life, 18yrs with the Navy, a business and other things but now I'm very much inspired to get after it again. Airbrushes weren't even a thing back when I used to build models.
I'm sure you're amazed at all the tools, paints, kits, etc that are available now. It's quite amazing how the hobby has grown in capabilities since we were kids. We're easily able to do much better jobs on our models than when we were young.
Sorry about your dog Milo. One year ago, my best friend Bruno, a Little Schnauzer, passed away. It's really sad, but, the good moments, that I stay with my dog, are the best in my life, and I will remember forever.
I always thought Promodeler rendition of this plane has an exaggerated wing dihedral angle. That's why it has been in my stash for past 20 years but your techniques are great! I'm still searching for a way to correct the wing issue or perhaps build them in folding wing configuration, that's another 20 years to think about it. 😂😂
That's great Mathieu, I wish you many hours of enjoyment! Definitely check out other builders if you're not already as there are many different ways to achieve good results and find what works best for you. Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Hi Tom, lovely end result! And shock, horror..the first two paints you used weren't Tamiya! There should have been a warning at the start of the video. :) I must say you had me thrown for a loop with the way you built this one, a lot of it prepainted on the sprue. Why did you decide to do it this way? Normally you have tended to join the fuselage and wings first and then start the exterior paint. Love your paint chipping method. Very effective.
Hi again, yes a few changes as to the approach for this model dictated by the materials and parts. I didn't want to run enamel through my airbrush and Tamiya doesn't make a specific zinc chromate either. Sometimes I leave the parts on the sprue for faster application of the "primer", ease of keeping the parts together and not losing any pieces, and as a drying rack. Some viewers were shocked by this and even appalled (although I did this in another video too). I felt the paint chipping would be easier to accomplish prior to the overall assembly, so I went with that direction. Sometimes the particular model requires a slightly modified work pattern, other times it's just nice to experiment and reduce the tedium.
It's been awhile. It was either an airbrush or some canned compressed air used to spin the prop. For the E-2C Hawkeye video there were two cans of compressed air used at the same time.
(For those who viewed later): The Answer for Project #17 was -- The U.S.S. Indianapolis heavy cruiser in 1/350 scale.
Thank you sir for the very informative video, great music and pictures. Is this the old Monogram?.Sorry for the loss of your dog, Greetings from Norway,
I actually really enjoy that you sometimes put the relaxed rain sounds when you don't talk and not some obnoxious music. Thumbs up!
Thanks Pug ! 😀
My grandfather served in VMSB-244 this was so cool to see. I just picked up this kit and will be using this video as a guide. Thanks!
Hi sdefrees, that's great to hear and best of fun on your build! 😃
OK, I have to say right off the bat, I really like the little facts you attach to the top of the screen. Good show!
When I moved, I had to give up lots these so I took pictures of them before letting them go.
Thanks Kerwin, let me be your avatar 🤭

Thanks for putting this up. My dad was a tailgunner and radioman on a SB2C-4 Air Group 83 on the Carrier Essex for the Okinawa campaign in 1945.
Glad you enjoyed it! Your Dad took part in one of the most significant events in human history to be sure.

Hi Phil, thanks for watching!
Man I first built the Monogram Helldiver in around 1977, glad to see it still around.
Hi oneastrails, as long as there are models and interest in WWII, we'll definitely have Helldivers 😎

I like that because here is not to much 'weathering' added.
Hi Jernej Funkl, happy that you liked it. There was a bit of groundwork laid down, but I only used a little of it to get the final effects. 😃

It's great to watch ur skill and talent .and the fact you work at aircraft. . excellent
Thanks again Jon! 🙂
Excelent vid, as always, with very good historic background. Thank also for explaining the antenna building
Thanks Miguel, glad you liked it 🙂
Easy way to start off aerial two little nicks in rudder same place glue in whatever you use as aerial wire got a good start on fitting it
Hi Wendy, good idea. I would hope I didn't cut the antenna mast in two trying that😅
Brilliant..Great video and build. But don’t know if I enjoyed watching or listening.Excellent idea having 1040’s radio as the soundtrack .!👍
Thanks very much Paul B 😃
Nice.I really want to see this SB2C Helldiver Dive bomber.Keep it up.
Thanks Kyaw 🙂
Ooooh....a lot of USS Yorktown CV-10 there! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻😍😎
....if I remember correctly, Captain Jocko Clark turned the USS Yorktown around, sailed back to port, demanded the Helldivers to be for swapped SBD Dauntless machines....as the SB2C's wasn't good enough to use as anchors! 😳😲😆😂
Hadn't heard that one, funny story if true. 😃
Well, from the looks of it the box is pretty big. I'm going to go and hope it's a B-52 (with an x-15?). I love your videos, rain noses are nice as well. You keep making your models better and better!
Thanks so much Aaron 😀 I hid the actual box behind that "curtain" to conceal the size of the model. Could be big, could be average size 😉
Yup 🙂
Wow nice job thanks for sharing......
Thanks Juan! 🙂
And Sir, Its the ENTERPRISE!
Very nice job keep it up
😀
outstanding job thank you for the video
Thanks Scott, glad you enjoyed it 🙂
looks awesome
Thanks B-MAN 67 😃
1. 1/48 P38 by Tamiya
2. 1/350 uss Missouri
3. 1/48 Spitfire by Tamiya
(Also thanks for another amazing build, looks great!)
Thanks It's Free Real Estate, and thanks for the guesses. 😊
My dad flew Helldivers and may other carrier and land based Navy aircraft from 1942 - 1962.
No matter the plane he told me his favorite was 20mm canon.
Hi Matt, thanks for sharing, it was a different type of flying back then for sure! 😃
its a 1/350 fletcher class destroyer..
Great vid as usual...my guess,
1/72 Sherman firefly, 1/48 mustang or 1/350 Arizona!
Either way, can't wait!
Thanks for the support and the guesses, purplejarvy 😉
Thanks Graham 😃
I would like to have this kit in my stash.
Came for the build, stayed for the music
🎹🎼🎺🎧
1/350 Scale ship is my guess. Excellent work as always!
Thanks Carlos! Which one? 😀 😉
@@MaxAfterburner USS Lexington
Hi Carlos, thanks for the guess. Did you see the recent footage when they found the Lexington?
Max_Afterburner Ya they found it in March. The underwater footage is crazy.
Great work on the Hell Diver. My guess on the No: 17 build: Eduard 1/48 P-51 Mustang or Tamiya 1/48 P-38 Lightning.
Thanks tomcatter11 and good luck with those guesses 😄
Beautiful!!!!!!!!! Can you do one for F-16 or F-35? Thanks!!
Anthony Hershko he’s done a lot of f16s
Thanks James, I'll have to try that sometime. And thanks for your guesses 😃
Really enjoyed this one.
Would you consider building the B24 Liberator or a B17?
SO FREAKIN COOL
Hi R34DLINE Gaming, thanks again! 😃
Great video again, Max! My guess for the next kit is that it’s going to be either the aircraft carrier Enterprise, a P-51, or a P-38
Thanks for your guesses Isaac! 🙂
Nice one, Max ^-^
Thanks again for your kind words Foab Moab 🙂
Sorry about your dog Milo. One year ago, my best friend Bruno, a Little Schnauzer, passed away. It's really sad, but, the good moments, that I stay with my dog, are the best in my life, and I will remember forever.
They are truly Man's Best Friend. RIP Bruno🐕🐶
Hi vin10954, if you ever get a chance to build it, watch out for the main landing gear. They're a bit weak.
@@MaxAfterburner Thanks for your advice, I will write down on instruction sheet.
Ahh, the *_"Sonnovabitch-2nd Class! :D_*
Damn.....beat me to it.....!
My grandpa was in the Navy and told us it's true sailor name the son of a gun second class
What’s the amount of oil and paint when you to a wash on your model
Hi Mathieu, I don't have a set ratio, I just do it by eye and adjust with more or less paint/thinner as needed.
Max_Afterburner ok thanks cause I’m 14 years old and I have maybe 1 year of experience;) and I’m currently watching your vids to take some from you :)
That's great Mathieu, I wish you many hours of enjoyment! Definitely check out other builders if you're not already as there are many different ways to achieve good results and find what works best for you. Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Did you ever going to show the video for the Russian Su -27 ? I really like to learn to apply three different colors
Tamiya 1:48 P-51D Mustang?
DeltaBlue, thanks for your guess!
How did you spin the prop?
It's been awhile. It was either an airbrush or some canned compressed air used to spin the prop. For the E-2C Hawkeye video there were two cans of compressed air used at the same time.
