- In this 35th model build video for the channel, we’ll construct, paint, and detail a 1/48th scale Douglas TBD-1 Devastator torpedo bomber from Great Wall Hobby - Kit #L4809. During this episode we will also provide information, images, and video clips concerning the Devastator squadrons of VT-3, VT-6, and VT-8 as well as some of the men from these units.
We’ll revisit the Devastator in the future (Project #38) with a different model manufacturer and concentrate solely on the Torpedo Squadron 8 (VT-8) from the USS Hornet in 1942 in that installment.

Nice to see you back Tom. The Devastator certainly deserves more love and recognition than it gets. It was simply a case of being left behind with the rapid pace of aircraft development. In many ways it reminds me of the Fairey Battle.
Thanks, Stephen! This one is doing pretty well despite the setbacks from the initial upload. 🙂
This was great. Half history half modeling.
Hi Jason-iz6ob, I try to find a number of elements to include and entertain the viewer and I'm glad that many enjoy this type of format. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🥳
I am glad to see a new post. I really respect your techniques. Never miss a video
Hi timgetty955, my initial response to your comment doesn't seem to be showing up?
I certainly do appreciate you and your comments. By the way, I officially started on the Project #36 model building tasks today after having completed some preliminary setting up. 😎🙂
This is as much a touching tribute as it is a fantastic build. This style of build video was one the best I've seen. My compliments and gratitude, looking forward to your future work
Hi julianspeed7322, your kind comments are very much appreciated! 😎
Good to see your work again Tom! Love the channel.
Hi flightlinemedia, well thank you so very much for that! 🤩🥳
Very nice plane aircraft i want for myself.
Hi neilhaas, thanks! 😎
great work Tom . Always look forward to your vids , I always love that moment when you can open the box and see the fuselage profile for the first time !! best regards from Wales 😍😍🎥🎥
Hi fredtedstedman, thanks! A bit of a wait for this one... 😉
Your work has improved logarithmically since you first started.
Hi Bob, Thanks! 🥳
Nice! I have this kit on my agenda this year!😊
Hi jcwoodman5285, wonderful! Git 'er done! ✈️🤩
As a fellow aviation enthusiast and modeller, I love having your soothing voice in the background when I model!
Keep it up!
Hi haraldsydness4902, thanks so very much and have fun building! 😀
Lovely model and great tribute to the real aircraft and the pilots who flew them. Thank you for all the good work.
Hello again voodoonights1671 ! So glad you could join up for this latest production and I'm thrilled you found it enjoyable! 🥳
I find your historical notes excellent, just like the way you divide the details shots. A truly innovative way to enjoy and appreciate the making of a model.
Hi daniellabra4186, this one was jam packed with info, but it barely scratched the proverbial surface. 🙂
@@MaxAfterburner For sure, but you have set aside a way to make these videos. I hope you'll do it again...
Magnificent work!! The Devastator is one of my all time favourite WW2 aircraft and it's so nice to see your beautiful rendition come to life. Can't wait to see what you have instore for us next 😀
Hi Darth_Giggles, thanks so much! I crack open #36 probably late Saturday or on Sunday 🎺
Those Tamiya Weathering Master sets pay for themselves. Makeup for models.
Very nice, i dont have this kit of the TBD at this time. Maybe one day in the future. My focuse for WWII aircraft is USN & USMC aircraft. Building F4U-1 Corsair right now, with a few more in the pipeline as well as some SBD Dauntless, F4F Wildcats to build. This will keep me busy for well over a year i imagine. Thanks for your video, beautiful work you did.
Hi bobrivett7645, sounds like you got some great subjects to model and keep you very busy! Thanks so much for watching and have fun on your builds! 🧐🤩
Wow! So much information, you have done a great job both with the kit and the video.I remember i built Monogram s Devastator ages ago as a kid but this one is much better. I have to watch the movie now. The music was so calming too.
Hey a.g.6224, so many improvements in model manufacturing are bound to lead to greater model building experiences for the hobbyist since the earlier days of Monogram for sure! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on the Devastator video. 😀
Outstanding work on the model and video, Tom. Douglas gained knowledge from the Devastator to develop the extraordinary Skyraider, first flight March 18, 1945. Last week I purchased a 1/32 Trumpeter F-35C and a Italeri F-35A after being inspired by your F-35C build. 'Reskit', resin has upgrades for these kits now and are developing more, one being seated pilots and ejection seats, The F-35A will be posed in flight along with a 1/32 Trumpeter P-38L using motorized propellers displayed on custom stands . Both models to be painted in AK, 3rd Gen, 'Have Glass'.
Hi SEMJW, thanks very much and I'm glad you're going to take these builds to a higher level of detail and quality! I hope you'll share a picture or two when all this work is completed. Best Wishes for great success! 👍😎
@@MaxAfterburner It may take a while to complete as there are several other projects being worked on. Soon to be posted on my channel; two 1/24 Airfix Mk.IXc Spitfires, displayed together in flight on custom stands with seated pilots I sculpted, George Beurling KH-B, MA585 and Johnnie E Johnson JE-J EN398 circa September 1943. Johnson stated that he flew with Beurling once or twice while with the 403 squadron but never had him as a wingman so it is a, could have happen display. It has taken two years to build them. The kit is good but many improvements/modifications can be done if desired. I used (Airfix as well) the excellent, Paul H Monforton reference book. All the markings and stencil data were painted on with the, '1 Man Army' mask kit. I may have mentioned this before. There is an official RAF training film posted on my channel on preparing, painting and maintaining wartime aircraft that all modellers should see if building WW2 RAF airplanes. You may find it interesting. Looking forward to your next build video. Thank You, Tom.
Hi SEMJW, oh certainly, you have your work cut out for you! However, the outcomes of your projects are definitely all at the Pro level 🥳😎
Thanks Max.
I like how you do models as tribute peace’s.
It gives the project more prospective.
I was looking to do this kit or the new Hobby Boss kit.
It won’t be the first time I’ve used one of your builds as guidance.
Thanks again 👍
Hi allandaniell7055, I'm thrilled to hear that you like the presentations and that you may have gotten some ideas for your own great model works! 😊
Nice to see you back... I love always the story behind the plane... is always about the story behind! Great build my friend... cheers from Argentina ❤
Hi defdef6230, very happy that you enjoy this channel's video format! I cracked open the box for Project #36 today 🥳
I never knew how devastated the Devastator was. Thankfully designers/manufacturers learned quickly and produced better aircraft to replace them. Peace and love.
Hi TJsModelBench-jb4xt, by the time WWII started the U.S. already knew the Devastator was in need of replacement, but just a little too late to prevent disaster... Thanks for Watching! 😊
Marvellous build of a great kit.Lovely job and a fitting tribute to all the brave men lost at Midway. I salute their memory !🙏 Respect
Hi mikesweet2554, thanks for watching and for your kind thoughts of the souls lost 🕯️
Excellent work my friend. Thank you for the history , for the build ,for .....for everything. I have learn much more from you. Keep going. I will wait your Knew video.Best wishes from Greece
Γεια σου ΑΝΤΩΝΗΣ, Ευχαριστώ! I'm glad you enjoyed the different aspects of the Devastator video and I hope you'll enjoy the next model build video in the future. 🧐
An amazing tribute. Thanks!
Hi David-wy9jl, thank you, glad you liked it. So much to go over and I certainly touched only a small fraction of the sacrifice and the historical events. 🤔
Nice job Tom, good to see your builds again. 👍
Hi petermoscone3115, thanks very much! I was quickly reminded of how much work it takes to create one of these videos when I began work on this latest effort 😅
Another great build and stunning end result.
Hi marcusaureliusantoninusaug2161, thank you so much! Did you change your handle? 🤔
One of the best modellers I watch. Respect for the past and terrifically meticulous master crafted video builds, just really appreciate not only your builds but the way you present them.Well done sir.
Hi bushranger900, I'm so very appreciative of your very nice comments and thanks for watching! 🤩😊
Man that's too much glass for my taste. No wonder they called those greenhouse canopies. I'd shell out for an Eduard masking set myself. Your steady hands made short work of it, though. Great work, Maestro.
Outstanding work!
Hi gregmagnuson5795, thank you so kindly! 🥳
Nice job. Would look stunning on a flight deck diorama.
Hi TRINFSS, if I make it to Project #38, there will be a flight deck addition. 🥳
Thanks for another detailed model and educational video! The fire extinguisher is my favorite part.
Hi Nat, a teeny tiny little extinguisher with lots of heart!🧯
Great job!!! Welcome back Tom!
Hi E-Man, thanks! I could use an improving "bit of a coin"! 🤔
Great presentation... thanks!
Hi BarkingSpyda, I'm happy that you found it entertaining! 🤩
Always a smile when I see you’ve uploaded a new video!!!
Hi cerethpainting6606, so glad to hear that! I hope to bring another smile to your face in the near future 🥳
Beautiful work 👍
Hi NJ-on3pn, thanks and cheers! 😎
Great seeing you back, Tom!
Hi AG-wg1sy, I'm back...'causing more trouble 😂
Great work, sir.
Hi billbrowning3021, thanks, I made it to the finish line! 😀
Great build as always! I’ve always wanted to get this kit but for one reason or another I just never did. This my best the kick I needed
Hey acescalemodeling, I'm glad you might have found some inspiration here for building your own unique Devastator 🥳
Beautiful Devastator mate

Tag ChristianSchroter-ok4sk , danke sehr! 😎
Welcome back ive missed your videos. Great build of course!
Hi danwilliams1686, thanks and I hope the wait was worth it -- keep me flying! ✈️
I have nothing but contempt for the Devastator. When a whole squadron is shot down in flames, that is an aircraft that should not have been in that position to begin with. 29 men killed, 1 survived from VT-8. As far as the model, you did a phenomenal job and I loved the video.
with the way the us used torpedo bombers at midway its a wonder any made it home, I wouldnt put it on the tbd. tbfs and b-26s also launched attacks with no success
Hi davidcole333, thanks! It was a desperate time for the U.S. and all they had was the TBD-1 Devastator with the TBF Avengers barely coming off the assembly line for the first time. Even the VT-8 detachment of the six TBFs out of Midway was all but wiped out. I think a lot of blame can be put on the USS Hornet’s captain and also Stanhope Ring who led the Hornet air group. Both refused to provide any fighter support for the TBDs despite the protestations of Waldron and all the other air squadron commanders which hopelessly doomed the torpedo bombers. I also believe Ring to be a bit of a “glory hound” taking all the fighters for the Dauntless dive bombers (and himself). Ring’s stubbornness not to change course after VT-8 located the Japanese carriers and ignoring Waldron after he radioed the rest of Hornet’s aircraft to assist is unforgiveable in my opinion. 🤔
Great build.
Hey kenbock3453, thanks much! 😊
I still think you sound like Will Forte. Your voice is humorous and serious at the same time like his.
MacGruber! 😎
Looks great!
Hey Red-rl1xx, it was another one of those models that I wasn't sure would work out, but in the end I was very happy with the build and the outcome of this Devastator! 😀
Looks cool 🛩
Hi goforitpainting, thanks for watching this one! I hope you're doing well 😊
No idea how you did the spinning prop at the end of the video but that was cool!
Hi rickbourn971, zoom-zoom-zoom! 🛩️ 😂
Glad to see you back. Great build!
Have you considered a B-1B build?
Hi wadefarris308, coincidentally a friend of mine has been after me for some time to do the B-1B Lancer! Those kits are harder to find these days other than sites like E-Bay and usually overly priced. My latest video hasn't done very well which drags the channel down and my willingness to put additional funds and time into it, unfortunately.
P.S. I have that popular poster of the painting with the B-1B skimming over the lake and churning-up-the-water-behind-it under framed glass and hanging above a bed in a 2nd room of mine! 👍✈️
0:16 When he says he's put in his application does he mean he's put it in his pocket? I don't imagine the Air Force would want to recruit someone as dim as that.
Love the build and your explanation of it!
Hi TheLittleThingsJunkie, it was probably meant to be his copy. Every form we did in the military seemed to be in triplicate. One for the department, one for your personnel file, and one for you. Glad you enjoyed the Devastator and some of its historical elements. 🧐😎
That corrugated duraluminun construction of the wings looks like it belongs on a barn or a garden shed. Very representative of a pre-WW2 aircraft. Junkers in Germany were known for that construction method ever since WW1, most famously used on the Ju-52 transport and a lot of the Kriegmarine's Junkers seaplanes.
"Where Eagles Dare"
Yay, A Max Afterburner video a good way to end the day (watch 50%) & start the next (watch the rest). Since you seem to on a 'ator kick with the Devastator have you considered the Academy Vindicator?. 🤔
Hi kiwiruna9077, definitely an aircraft hardly anyone remembers! If you have ever seen the Midway (1976) movie you'd see Vindicators that were recorded on quality film and in color during the 1940's used as a substitute for Devastators in some of the scenes!
P.S. I had no idea any company had put out a Vindicator model. I'll have to check it out 🧐.
I would sure like to know how you handled the seam on the leading edge of the wings.
Hi greenheartjg54, I think I'm going to get this question a few times, so I may have to create a "cut-and-paste" reply. The leading edges particularly at the outer corrugated sections had a minimal seam line, amazingly. Only by closely looking in could you see it. I used a small metal round file with a tapered end and gently rubbed in between the ribs with the end of the file perpendicular to the wing and carefully avoiding the raised ribs . Surprisingly, two or three passes was all that was needed to remove any hint of the line. I wasn't sure how this was going to work originally, so I didn't even set up my camera to record it, unfortunately. For the inner half of the wings, I just used a sanding stick. 🧐
IMHO, the Devastator was a torpedo bomber for the late 30s, forced to fight longer than it should have because of procurement mistakes made by the USN just before WW2. No fault against Donald Douglass, but I'm glad he hired Earl Heinemann to give us the Dauntless, Skyraider, and all the cool 1st-3rd gen naval jets Douglass would later be famous for.
Here's a question for you, MA. Since you live in Arizona, do you buy your hobby supplies and kits from Andy's Hobby Headquarters? He's an Arizonian like yourself. He's a panzermeister modeler, his channel is quite informative, especially regarding new armor kits.
Hi Bob, I do purchase items from Andy from time to time. I actually met him a few years ago at a model convention he was hosting up in Glendale, Arizona. I give him a lot of credit for getting me back into model building. He's a great ambassador for the plastic model industry.
@MaxAfterburner Cool. I go to kind of the Southeast Michigan version of his store called Great Lakes Train and Toy. It's pretty much an every genre hobby store that stays competitive with the online guys by having a small warehouse storefront and mail order.
I apologize in advance if I missed it, but how did you tackle the corrugations and the spaces between on the wing leading edges?
Hi justasuggestion8216, nope, you didn't miss it!
I'm afraid I'll have to give you my official cut-and-paste answer on that: "The leading edges particularly at the outer corrugated sections had a minimal seam line, amazingly. 🧐"
@@MaxAfterburner Good to know. I'm going to start the hobby boss devastator soon (hopefully) and have been struggling to figure out how to deal with it.
I have the new Hobby Boss edition of the Devastator too. We'll have to see how it compares to the GWH one.
@@MaxAfterburner The corrugations are why I've never started one. I love the devastator and have always wanted to build one but I'm also a perfectionist and if I mess those up it'll end up on the shelf of doom or in the trash. I really wish modern model design would figure out a way around having a seam go through those ribs.
It looked more suitable as coastal patrol plane, than a frontline attack aircraft.
Hi rogerswope9881, it was the "F-35" of its day back in 1937! 🧐
Ya ever gonna make that video on how to make your own decals?
Hi AG-wg1sy, I may need to do some custom decal work for Project #38. I'll try to find some time within that video to go over my process for making custom decals -- which just recently got modified and improved. 🧐
It's so hard to get your updates because of the Eagle driver with your handle.
Hi Bob, when he was considering using "Max Afterburner" and asked me about it, I told him it might cause some confusion. He didn't respond and went with it anyway.
Ironic that the Mitsubishi B5N Kate was the Japanese doppelganger of the TBD, but the Kate ended up doing a lot more damage and was more feared. Chalk it up to the veteran IJN pilots that had experience in China and Malaya, and the Kate being equipped with armor-piercing bombs made from naval shell casings, and the Long Lance torpedo as well...
Those poor Devastator crews bought an opening for the Dauntlesses to hit the IJN carriers at Midway. The USN needed the Avenger sooner.
Didn't the British and French have TBDs as well? I think the Brits called theirs the Chesapeake. The French had a limited number of SBD-1 and 2 Dauntlesses, too if I remember right.
Hi Bob, the aircraft you're thinking of was the Vought SB2U Vindicator which is somewhat similar looking to the Devastator and was also not a very successful military aircraft.
Welcome back ^-^
Hey there foabmoab, many thanks to you! 🥳😎
Didn’t even know there was a new 48th Devastator out there. The old monogram one sucked.
Hi thundercracker2004, Trumpeter has a 1/32 scale Devastator model out there and Hobby Boss just recently released their 1/48 scale Devastator kit. So, a couple of more to choose from for those who are interested in that aircraft. 👍🧐
I just watched the movie that was made in the late 60's last night on RUclips called Midway excellent movie they actually showed George gay in the ocean with a cousin on his head to avoid capture by the Japanese.
Hi t.j.lemaster8653, George Gay mentioned in his book about his participation (which also included pictures) in the making of the Midway movie. He got to watch them film the scene of his rescue and he spent time with the actor who portrayed him.
