Building the Kinetic 1/48 Scale E-2C Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning Aircraft

  • In this video we’ll be working on Kinetic kit #48013 -- a 1/48 scale U.S. Navy E-2C Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft assigned to the VAW-112 “Golden Hawks” and based off the carrier U.S.S. Nimitz (CVN-68) in 1995 at the time. The aircraft’s outside is colored in the high visibility paint layout instead of the usual flat and subdued military exterior schemes. Pre-shading lines, detailing and painting along with background information is presented in this video build.
    This kit proved the most difficult to date for the channel due to numerous fit issues, some instruction errors, and other kit problems. The paint guide also erroneously lists the VAW-112 as the "Golden Eagles" instead of the "Golden Hawks".

    Hey! I specialize in structural repairs for the fleets E2C/D Hawkeyes, and this was pretty fun to watch! It's a pretty accurate model, but missing a few antenna loops on the rotodome pylon and the big on on the starboard fuselage between the vapor shroud and the cockpit. Also, most of the fuselage interior is painted the same white as the MLG compartment internal. You painted the titanium exhaust ring bare metal, but it looks like you painted the upper an lower exhaust beaks grey, when they are also bare titanium. The little posts on the outboard fins of the empennage are also bare metal, those are what the OWP's lats onto when stowed.
    Overall an awesome build! I love the Hawkeyes and am glad they receive a bit of love outside as well! Thanks for the video!

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  2 года назад +6

      Hi Aaron! -- I’ll just mention some “answers” to your points here. I did note that the rotodome pylon had loops, but the kit did not feature them and they didn’t make enough of an impression on me to scratch build unfortunately. As for the larger one on the starboard side, the kit has a number of items intended for all the E-2C modifications including that antenna and I was going to add it. But, I couldn’t find images in the 1995 time frame that included one for #164495. That loop appears to have been added on later in its career?
      On the white interior, definitely yes. At the time of the build I was unsuccessful in finding images or video of this area until after I sealed it up. So I mentioned it was “not so accurate paint” in the narration.
      The exhaust breaks are indeed painted in a titanium color. I may have ended the clip before the painted completion there. I’m not sure if they’re visible in later shots.
      Finally, I did note that the aft rigging posts were also bare metal from a video I saw and they very much reminded me of smaller versions of UHF antennas on the F-16s I used to work on. Thanks for the input; I sure could have used you earlier to keep me honest!
      Keep ‘em flying buddy!

      Hi Christian, I really appreciate those comments! The model work and video work seemed to be taking up more and more of my free time while the channel's declining performance and YT's permanent warning made all of this a bit discouraging. The F-111C did well this year, but the E-2C may be my biggest "hit" in almost 2 years. So, I'm very pleasantly surprised that the Hawkeye video is doing so well viewership-wise and I've picked up a substantial number (for this channel) of new subscribers. 🤗

    When I was at NAS Norfolk in the '80s most of the VAWs were on the Willoughby bay side, the former seaplane hangars, and had to cross the main road in from Gate 4 to get to Chambers field. They "closed" the road with a few flashing lights and the (presumed) common sense of the drivers on base so everyone got an up close look at the E2C, like it or not. My wife and I called them "Frisbee Birds"!

    Because there's a high availability requirement on these birds, apparently, seeing various bays "washed" in red hydraulic fluid is middling common (imagine using Clear Red as a bay wash).

      Hi Curtis, thanks for the comments! I started cutting along the panel lines in the decals to highlight them, but I didn't like the way it was starting to look particularly in the white areas, so I ended up skipping that step. @@MaxAfterburner something I want to try but haven’t done yet is go over the decals with a 10/90% paint/thinner dusting of the base color (in your case the custom gray) - a kind of normalizing coat, and also perhaps a bone dry mild dry brushing to pick up any rivet or panel shadows to break that shiny flat decal sheen. More testing required! 👍

Tactically, they are supposed to have a grey under fuselage and white upper, but nobody actually uses that scheme anymore.
