85mm f1.8 has a special place in my heart. It was with me in dire times and with it I did my last professional work efficiently.
Every video he does isn’t a review. It’s a ad for Crystal Pepsi paid by camera manufacturers
omg I never noticed it was Crystal Pepsi, I thought it was just a Pepsi bottle filled with water
Should be a frozen one, you know....Mr. Frost.
I'll take my leave
@@Durio_zibethinus lol
Hmm..never tried it, had to Google for more info.
- Do they still sell Crystal Pepsi?
In addition to the underwhelming taste, Crystal Pepsi was also blitzed by the competition, with Coca-Cola releasing its own colorless offering, Tab Clear. Ultimately, both beverages shuttered their experimental products after just two short years, with PepsiCo discontinuing Crystal Pepsi in early 1994.
@@Stop-All-War Dude has been using that particular bottle for these videos for at least a decade.
@christopherfrost - I'm using the Megadap ETZ21 Pro to adapt my Sony lenses to my Nikon Z9 while I swap gear out, and it's worth noting, it fits and works fairly well. I don't know if I'd trust its weather sealing in a rainstorm, and I certainly wouldn't use it for wildlife, but for portrait work, it's spot on.
I only discovered this morning that it was now possible to bring Canon and Nikon together in this way, and here you are, endorsing an example. I'm starting to believe it!
It's been really helpful to actually see the autofocus in action. That's certainly fast enough for most of my photography. Thanks!
A word of advice for anyone purchasing Megadap, be very cautious updating the firmware of the adapters, especially Sony E to Nikon Z adapters. I completed a firmware update recently and it bricked the adapter. Thankfully it was under warranty, but just a word of advice. Non-official products are great, because I highly doubt Nikon or Sony would make one of these, but they aren't flawless.
Perhaps a side note, my Sony E to Nikon Z worked reasonably well, while it worked. Not flawlessly, autofocus hunted a bit sometimes. But quite well.
What exactly do you mean by "be cautious"? There are literally only two options for a user: 1) update the firmware and hope nothing breaks; 2) not update the firmware and miss out on bug fixes and support for new lenses. No amount of caution will change that.
@@wj45 Perhaps don't run for the newest update until you see people talking about it online, or only update if the new firmware brings support for a bug you need fixed to work with your lenses.
Also, I would heavily recommend avoiding their "Linking Firmware 3.55" firmware for ETZ21 (not pro).
Also Megadap will not answer your emails unless you are a large reputable retailer aparently, so there won't be support if something goes wrong.
All that said, while the adapter communicated with my Nikon Z6 it worked just fine, until I updated the firmware to the latest firmware, and it no longer did.
To be honest, I do use another option (fringer model) and it works so well. Autofocus speed is excellent (the Z8 + 85 1.8 USM speed is as good as the R6 + 85 1.8 USM combo), and accuracy is really nice too. Af accuracy on challenging sport subject is not as good as native Z or F lenses when using big lenses such as 400 2.8.
With the Z8 it is so good ! A great way to make the switch from canon to nikon.
And the fact that you can choose between optical stabilisation or in body stabilisation is another plus !
I didn't realise Fringer made a simular adapter, I'll have to check it out.
Again great review Chris, from inception your reviews have led my decision making on gear purchase over the years and i have never been disappointed. This particular review is currently topical as it makes added arguments for my current thoughts of leaving the canon system behind. Scary when you have invested so much in gear. Sony vs Nikon, haven't decided but after this review at least I can use my fav lenses for a bit to ease transition. Big thanks for the heads-up 👍
Great review and topic! Another great adapter is thr Fringer Ef-NZ. I've been using it for bird in flight with my Canon ef 100-400 and the AF is amazing with all the AF features.
I use the viltrox ef to z adapter but afc hunts quite a bit
I think the EF-NZ is the best EF to Z adapter at the moment (2024 April)
Fringer is a greate adapter. I've seen good things about their version 2 Ef-NZ too.
Same here : the fringer work perfectly well with canon telephoto lenses.
Very interesting - this could be what allows me to switch to Nikon yet still share a pool of lenses my girlfriend, who has a Canon DSLR
Now we need a F to RF adapter, so I can get the Nikon 3rd party alternatives for way cheaper than the EF versions
How about a Nikon D to Nikon Z adapter?
The canon EF 85mm 1.8 is really one of the greatest lenses of all time! In my opinion.
Good video. Wouldn't mind seeing a comparison of different adapters for both sony, canon, fuji, and nikon cameras.
I've tested the Megadap Sony E to Nikon Z stacked with the Sigma MC-11 Sony E to Canon EF and Sony E to Sigma SA. I'm happy to say the combination works well with the MegadapPro ETZ adapter - the plain Megadap ETZ21 doesn't work. It worked well on Canon lenses as well as sigma lenses and the older series of Tamron - ones with the gold ring.
Great little review Christopher! Does focus bracketing (focus shift shooting) work when using this adapter?
This adapter is better than Nikon FTZ in many ways. For example, if you have a Tamron lens that doesn't work with the FTZ, an EF Tamron counterpart would work just fine.
If you are using an older Nikon Z camera like the Z5/Z6/Z7 series, an EF to Z adapter won't hinder the autofocus speed like the FTZ.
Sigmas?
I am curious to know more about the alleged hindering of the autofocus speed by FTZ. Could you elaborate?
@@wj45 I think Steve Perry made a test video a long time ago. Probably during the beginning of Covid 19.
@@wj45 You can also try to focus on a stationary and contrasty close subject and then a distant subject repeatedly and use a stop watch. The speed of the Z5/6/7 would be slower than Z8/Z9/DSLR.
However, if an EF lens is used, the focus speed isn't hampered.
Hi Christopher, I just wanted to recommend that you check out one of the Sony E mount to Nikon Z mount adapters. They even allow for autofocus but its usually best with first party Sony lenses.
not true actually. its the same performance with my sigma art e mount lenses
@@airdailyx yeah I've heard a few people say sigma lens work well with it. Do you happen to own a 14mm f1.4 by the way? I'm curious if that one works with auto focus.
My Tamron 35-150 worked reasonably well with the ETZ21 but it did hunt every so often.
Nikon zf and canon 5dmiii dream combo and this adapter makes it possible
I can also recommend trying the Megadap ETZ21 to adapt Sony E lenses to Nikon Z cameras. Just be sure to update the firmware to the latest version.
And, there is a megadap adapter for Sony e to Nikon z mount, with a newer pro version.
Will you please review FE to Z adapter(s) in the future?
Hi Chris have you tried the neewer brand sony e to Nikon z mount adapter? It's cheaper than the techart and megadep ones and seems to get good reviews on Amazon
Off subject, but have you done any videos on Canon’s RF teleconverters, just the converters themselves to see the difference in sharpness? I think that would be very interesting if you haven’t.
For the cost of this adapter, it's hard to not stick with adapt on RF bodies. The AF is much faster.
I'm crazy enough to use Megadap ETZ21 and Sigma MC-11(or Viltrox EF-E2 speedbooster) on Z7. It works, but forget about AF tracking and video AF
Maybe a good way to get some otherwise too pricy range and aperture. I wish you would’ve compared it against the FTZ and see if old f lenses are any faster or better than adapting canon since they’re both options now.
I use canon ef lenses on fuji x and the colours from canon glass is simply amazing but autofocus is slow! I want to invest into a full frame system and can you recommend a brand ? Sony canon or Nikon? Z7ii or Sony a7iv or canon r6ii?
Like to a review on the xf 90mm f2
How would you compare the performance of this Megadap EFTZ21 adapter with the Fringer EF to Z adapter?
Thanks for review! Really helpful. Do you know if the adapter is compatible with third-party autofocus lenses such as Sigma? Or does it only work with native canon lenses?
Another option is the fringer model. Tested with tamron 24-70 VC, sigma 24 1.4 art, 35 1.4 art, 50 1.4 art, 105 1.4 art, 50 2.8 macro, 150 OS, 180 OS macro, voightlander 20 3.5... all of them work perfectly well.
And with with manual old lenses with chip (tagotech), it works even better on nikon than with canon RF cameras (canon camera doesn't recognise the focal lens you set in the chip so the IBIS doesn't work as you can't set the focal lens manually, on the Z8, it does recognise it and the IBIS work perfectly well)
Hi Chris, many thanks! An important question: Can I combine sensor stabilisation of the Nikon Z camera with lens stabilisation of the Canon lens? Have you tried it? That would be a game changer! Best wishes, Ralf
Will third party lenses for ef mount work with this?
Wondering about in-camera correction profiles :/
I've been using a Fringer adapter for the same purpose, I got the video on my channel, autofocus works nicely but lens stabilisation needs to be turned off, these adapters doesn't support lens stabilisation and you have to only rely on IBIS. otherwise, they work very nicely and autofocus on the Z8 with USM lenses is excellent!
This problem only appear with newer Nikon Z cameras and older cameras with firmware updates. The problem applies to Sony E to Nikon Z adapter as well.
However, you can disable IBIS and use lens stabilization, which is more ideal for telephoto lenses.
With the fringer adapter, you can choose between IBIS or IS, not both at the same time. With newer IS telephoto lenses, you should pick the IS and switch the IBIS off. As seen in exif datas, the nikon Z don't know if the lens has IS (a 400 2.8 IS lens will be seen as a 400 2.8G lens).
I recommend Fringer adapters not that kind of adapters that works bad with USM AF, in my Fujifilm X-H1 I use Fringer Pro II adapter with the same lens getting a performing AF even for Sports, yes I’ve said Sports with a Fujifilm camera Chris, so that test it is totally independent, I don’t think so…
You didn't mention how the adapter's custom ring and the L-Fn button work. Were there any problems?
Many have Nikon F mount lenses from the past and why don't they make nikon F adapter to Sony e mount with proper auto focus. It boggles my mind they haven't figured out yet.
I wish to see the Nikon 105mm 1.4 FX lens on a 45mp z camera
I want to use Nikon F lenses on RF. 28f1.4 58f1.4 60macro and 105F1.4 all lovely and unique. Why no Chinese manufacturer has announced such a product. They don't care if Canon sue them.
Full exif? So Lightroom lens corrections will be correctly set?
With fringer model at least, you don't have full exif. A 400 2.8 IS II will be seen as a 400 2.8G lens for example
fringer adapter is the best
Why?
@@wj45 no performance degradation and more compatibility firmware
Have any tried any adapter with Canon mount Tamron 150-600 G1 Lens. I am planning to buy Nikon Zf and will be really helpful if some one can help me with a best fit adapter.
I am wild life photographer and moving from canon600D to Nikon Zf
2:10 why is it challenging?
Why would I get this over an FTZ and F glass? Especially with the price.
Makes only sense if you have EF mount lenses already and don't want to get rid of them or want some particular EF mount lens.
why aren't there any adapters to use Nikon lenses on Canon RF bodies!!!
Because Canon would sue for the use of patents in RF autofocus. RF mount is close and proprietary
Lens IS works ?
The answer is in the video....
"stabilization if your body has it" says...not the Lens IS@@bnegative344
@@pochosublow6548last lens is 10-18mm with IS - 3:22. Chris says that "everything works fine" including IS, so according to the review IS works fine, both IBIS and lens.
They cannot operate simultaneously. If your lens has IS, you can enable it and disable the camera IBIS. If you forget to turn one of them off, the camera will start wobbling and you'll immediately see a very shaky image through your EVF or LCD. This only occurs after newer firmware updates. So if you have an older Nikon with original firmware, you won't see this problem.
Chris, Please test a Speedbooster once, to mount a Full frame DSLR lens on a APS-C, without cropping in the FOV but getting some extra light. For example the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony E-mount T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x II
Crystal Pepsi?!
Very clever, but why would anyone want to use Canon lenses when Nikon are better?
Maybe you want to try a Nikon Z body to see if you like it, without buying lenses until you decide to really switch to it. P.S. all modern lenses from first party manufacturers are equally sharp and with great performances, Nikon or Canon are no better one then the other. The advantage for each system is they can have different focal lengths, zoom ratio, apertures, etc, but quality is basically the same.
The much more interesting one is their ETZ adapter - Sony E to Nikon Z. For EF lenses the Fringer adapter is probably better.
320€!!!
Great review, but, Chris, you are not aging well mate!
imagine there's RF to Z adapter
There's many E to Z adapters with autofocus out there.
That would be something
Flange distance wouldn't allow it, physics wouldn't allow it unless it has the glass to expand the signal.
@@Al.j.Vasqueze to z 2mm, rf to z 4mm flange distance
I wonder if someone could make a Nikon Z to Canon RF adapter?
It would probably have to pretend that the lens is an EF mount.
You can't, they're both mirrorless, the flange distance is too similar, there's no space for an adapter between lens and body; you can adapt dslr to mirrorless, but not the other way around, or mirrorless between them.
@@ritrattoaziendale Ah, I meant to say F-mount
@@ritrattoaziendalewhy? e to z works, but rf to z not? 18, 16, 20 mm flange focal distance
Lmao, imagine buying now a Canon R with their closed mount, and using "b-but EF lenses" as an argument XD
Sticking Canon on Nikon… so taboo haha
Who in their right mind wants to put mediocre Canon glass on a Nikon camera? We need it the other way around, Nikon glass on Canon bodies! But I'm sure Canon would be terrified of this competition, they'll never allow it. I'm pretty sure that is why Nikon doesn't mind the adapter you are showing here🙂.
You are mediocre. This was a great lens.
@@montazownianr1 Haha, that didn't take long. Sad to see Chris' youtube channel also is exposed to Facebook trolls... Sorry Chris, if this goes on I'll remove my comment. I'd like to keep your channel civilized. Even though I do agree the 85mm EF is indeed a good lens.
I am in my right mind and I love my 200 1.8 on a Z8 camera
Too expensive
I have the Sony E to Nikon Z version. It's about 250€ and allows me to use my Sony 50mm f1.2 GM on my Nikon Zf. That means it saved me 2000€(!) because I don't have to purchase the Nikon Z 50mm f1.2.
It's great that this exists but I do wonder who would even want to use it. I mean, Nikon always had better lenses than Canon anyway so why not just go native - and I say that as someone was always Canon over Nikon lol.
Strange, my 400 IS II is better than the 400 2.8 FL in many ways (I have both), not to mention the mighty 200 1.8, or f2...
Nikon had great wide angle lenses, but the telephoto area was not that much better.
So yeah, this adapter is legit
Blasphemy!
