Yes you do need 1-7 different Amiibos(depending on how many players you want to control at one time, im only using 6 Amiibos to control the 7 players), you don't need Amiibos of the characters you plan on using this glitch with they just have to be compatible with SSBWiiU. I could use nothing but Fire Emblem Amiibos and do this glitch with every character.
In this mode it will result in 1 of the 2 possibilities. 1: Smash ball will go to only one of the Bayonettas while the other 6 will do neutral B 2: Smash ball is destroyed BUT will go to no one as it couldn't register who got the last hit since 7 are hitting it at the exact same time. Haven't heard of the smash ball crashing the game yet but it could possibly happen

Scan your Amiibo. 8. Plug your controller back in or re-sync it. 9. Move your joystick again and now you will be the Player in the next available space after your scanned Amiibo. 10. Repeat Steps 5-9 until all the Player spaces are filled with the 8 Amiibo(or in my case 7 Amiibo) 11. Go to the Settings (where Time or Stock and Item rules are). Then simply exit. 12. Enjoy controlling up to 8 characters simultaneously!
