The SR71 was a turbo bypass ramjet. When it got to ramjet speed the turbine was bypassed. The secret sauce was to take the supersonic flow down to subsonic so it could mix with fuel. Supersonic flow is like a liquid flowing. It takes longer to mix with fuel. Gaseous subsonic air mixes faster.
Supersonic air is also extremely turbulent and inconsistent in flow rate. Having that steady, laminar flow of subsonic air is crucial for the engine's intake.
Yeah, I wondered if "time" for fuel to ignite and burn might be a borderline that you could only cross by having some kind of "super fast" burn. Hypersonic seems to get past that, using the "ram" of high speed air - does one part fuel "blow and go" in less time than the speed of normal ignition?
Darpa, skunk works don't care @@MyHWYBro
@@robertcox14 It's about time for fuel to mix with air. In the compressed supersonic ram air it's trying to mix liquids. In air compressed not to supersonic flow it's still gaseous, and mixes with aerosolized liquid fuel faster.
Another super high quality video. No dumbing down, great editing, great storytelling
Are you kidding? They spent 12 minutes communicating about 2 minutes worth of information. And they started off by saying “people always ask why hypersonic?” And then never answer the question.

2:03 - the J58 begs to differ... and technically all modern, supersonic fighters harness, to some extent, the compression from shockwaves generated in the intake. Not to the "ram-jet" level where the compressor stages are fully bypassed, like the J58, but they do benefit from it. Good luck guys. Can't wait to see it haul butt!

x15 is not a ramjet, its a rocket propelled. many ramjet equipped airplane/missile are rocket boosted instead of dropped by an aircraft since that make little sense (since as he said it, the craft need to get to ~ mach3 to start the engine). In fact SR71 has literally a turbo-ram jet design so I don't understand why he said no plane has done that before.
Yeaaaahhh I super messed up on the BRoll here... sorry guys :(

man, these videos are a breath of fresh air.

Very excited for this!! Good luck chaps
You people look confident and all the best.
“1st hypersonic airplane” okay I guess we’re going to pretend the X-15 never existed.
X-15 wasn’t an airplane, it was a manned *rocket*. Conventional turbofan engines cannot go that fast.
X-15 was rocket powered 😊
@@jmchaserRocket powered or not, it was an airplane because of its flight trajectory and mission profile. The X-15 was certainly an airplane, along with the X-43, (arguably) the Space shuttle, and other space transport systems that utilize aerodynamic surfaces to glide through the air and land on a tarmac.
So glad to see you are pushing the envelope. Like you said, aircraft progress has stagnated to almost nothing. Can’t wait to see exciting times ahead with hypersonic. We need major innovations and breakthroughs like we haven’t seen in years. Great video!!
The enthusiasm is there for sure
Bless you guys and your investors for pushing forward one the most critical technologies in humanity’s history: transportation.
I’ve just felt like leaving the following piece of information, for no particular reason: Do check the Concord’s development problem: if I remember correctly, there’s an issue with air coming through the intake at Mach speeds, with conventional turbines. It always needs to enter the turbine subsonic (even when flying at mach speeds). Once the ramjet kicks in, I suppose that’s no longer an issue and it’s even desirable.
Well done! Good luck with your channel.
Sounds pretty cool. Will be interesting Tj see

X-15 Hypersonic Rocket Plane, was the worlds first Hypersonic Airplane and in April 1961, Russian Major Yuri Gagarin, became the first human to travel at hypersonic speed, during the world's first piloted orbital flight. You cannot claim a world first, when something else has already achieved that and holds the title. What you mean, is world's first at scale manufactured, hypersonic plane.
Awesome!
Perhaps somewhere mentioned already, but wasn't Concord the first? Looked it up: no Concord was ("just") MACH 2, hypersonic is at least MACH 5 (5 times speed of sound).
This is the type of engineering that we love!
how smart are these guys if they have a black ceiling in a technical work setting. real genius.
Why is a black ceiling good?
@@diegosuarez92 I think he is saying it is bad, but gives no reason. White ceiling is when you want to blast everywhere with light cheaply. I think they want precise lighting in different areas.
@@RogerWilco1 hmm yea that could be. It didn’t sound like the comment was talking about filming or lighting, but then I can’t read minds 😄
The choice between black or white ceilings in a technical work setting depends on factors such as light reflection, perceived spaciousness, aesthetics, and maintenance. White ceilings offer brightness and a neutral backdrop, while black ceilings provide focus and a modern, high-tech appearance. Consider the specific goals and design scheme of the workspace when making the decision.
Anyway, I don’t really care about filming and lighting. Was more interest in the “technical work setting” part of it
Care to explain why a black ceiling in a technical setting is not good?
Why the hell does that matter, go paint it for them if you don't like it. Jerk
The first "UNCLASSIFIED" hypersonic plane.

Amazing.
Great stuff as always!!!
I kinda get the feeling that the playback speed is like amped with 10%?
I somehow suspect that they aren't going to be building the first hypersonic plane, perhaps the first *public* one
I'm sure the Chinese love this video.
Engines are one thing but how are you going to deal with the heat and expansion of the plane itself while traveling at those speeds?
Its not about humans flying at these speeds, its more about planes being reusable and being capable of those speeds. I mean rockets , missiles have already been ultra fast, but not reusable. I don't foresee more humans in planes but less, but I do foreseen this technology being highly valuable for outrunning AA or even delivery of goods around the world.
Kelly Johnson is somewhere laughing his ass off. Took you guys long enough to catch up with me and my 1960's technology we used in the SR 71.

Video was so good, didnt notice that this isnt hermeus own channel, great doc, nice pacing.
X-15 was not a ram jet, it was a rocket engine. Video showed it as an example of a ram jet that needed to be air dropped.
Came here to say this!
@@toddslaughter2192 is it not true?
@@EngiRedbeard You got it right. The X-15 was a rocket-propelled aircraft. Apparently it was once fitted with an external scramjet engine (supersonic combustion ramjet) for testing but it was never fired.
X-15: Am I a joke to you?
Joking aside, very exciting.
That is an amazing venture. Question: What is the reason Quarterhorse doesn’t feature area ruling for it’s fuselage? Doesn’t that limit the top speed?
Isnt fastest operational aircraft the MiG-31?
Something tells me we need to keep a close eye on these guys, they definately have the resources and engineering backgrounds, half the time it's a lack of proper fabrication and computational/manufacturing facilities, these guys have all of that, just straight up think it, make it, try it,reminds me of space-x and their philosophies, build, test, iterate.very interesting to say the least, can't wait for the first full on flight test.
A folding wing design could help with any low speed maneuverability issues.
How are they dealing with friction heating? The SR-71 used Titanium, but this looks like an aluminium skin.
If water-boarded and forced to choose between "bespoke" and "discreet" I'd reluctantly adopt the latter. Both are excruciatingly cliche but we don't seem to have an alternative.
It would be amazing for them to explain how their engine is different from the Pratt & Whitney J58 on the SR71. Sounds similar but im not an engineer, so i must be missing something.
I honestly don't think you missed anything. Sounds like a startup saying all the startup words.
I was wondering the same... From what I've read, they are both examples of turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) propulsion, in principle. To my (limited) knowledge about engines, they look quite similar. Some difference: while the J58 engine uses 6 bypass tubes to move air from the 4th compressor stage directly to the afterburner, in the Chimera engine "air bypasses the turbojet" (quoting Hermeus) entirely and is led directly to the afterburner. I can only assume the explanations are accurate. A second difference is that Hermeus base their solution on a commercially available engine, which saves cost - and that's a big deal, for economy and scale of manufacture. It will be very interesting to see how the modification of the Pratt & Whitney F100 (which powers the F-15 and F-16) into a TBCC will work out. Any way, wishing good luck and cheering for Hermeus! I think the bond we feel for airplanes is because they are so strongly governed by the primal physics of life. Like the structure of birds, and even fish are governed by the primal physics of flow. We sense that primal kinship of the form of airplanes following the primal physics of the life from which we evolved. As our ancestors evolved successfully by recognizing, and developing attraction for others that adhered to primal physics.
This is so cool... I'm in Atlanta, can I visit the factory?
The engines they're making are straight out of ksp it's insane
When thermal cycling 3D prints of some alloys, do they become stronger the more cycles you put on them?
Actually an excellent question and one I’d like to know the answer to as well.
F-104 "Pencil", but faster than ever before.
No pilot, no airplane pal. U just built a fast UAV
You will need to apply an insulating coating to your aircraft. Like Shuttle or Buran. (black tiles) Otherwise your plane will melt.
"Held by the F-15 since the SR-71 retired...." Somebody forgot about the MIG 25/31 those bother touched Mach 3+ while destroying themselves at speed.
I would like to hear the questions too not only answers to unknown open questions
The aliens already possess that tech
Ok guys, you have me very interested, but from the get-go you say Mach 5 is new ground that we've not covered before... but the X-15 (which you showed a picture of when talking about Ramjets, but it was a rocket plane.) hit a max of Mach 6.7, and also, after saying it's new ground, then the COO says that we haven't gone this fast for decades (which IS absolutely true from what we know).
It's a little vexing when we're relying on you for information and you start off making troublesome claims that could be fixed with editing.
Realy I like this powerful hypersonic airplane
This looks like 1960s Project Neptune - that was a scary concept.
Do you mean project Pluto? I can’t find any project Neptune
This is almost completely different.. the disadvantage of Pluto was the fact that it leaked nuclear waste along its flight path. But this has nothing nuclear about it.
Imagine a collaboration project with these guys and Skunk Works
Will you be building manned craft, or staying with UAV's?
Your video sounds very good and I like to see people actually want to push the envelope again. Just remember boys and girls when you get 2.5 mark anything above 2.5 your relative Heating starts to go up exponentially. F104 could you unlock 2.55 but if it went faster than that it would start to fall apart it didn't shed the Heat very well above 2.55 and that's the big thing the Heat I see that you have an aircraft with a grouping wings like the xB 70 Valkyrie. That was probably one of the best planes that was ever made ever. It was one of the best aerodynamic aircraft were built it had the capability of going close to Mach 4 but the heating was the big problem even though it was stainless steel and other compounds nickel alloy titanium in some places but mostly nickel and stainless steel. The good thing is you have systems now that have been developed in the last 60 years that can make a similar plane much better and much easier to fly remember two things the weight of the aircraft and the materials that you use to ablade Heating because the heating is the biggest thing. I sent a couple emails to Elon Musk I said you know if you took that 2 billion dollars that you just spent on Twitter you could probably figure out a better heat shield for that money. I think someday boys and girls you and me will be able to get into an aircraft at LAX in Los Angeles and fly it to the space station and then fly at home without worrying about your wings melting. I think you're doing a wonderful job Sierra Hotel
I wish them success.
Ole Lockheed and Raytheon are licking their lips hard son.
This is very much like Space X. I like it.
Mike Smayda, one of the four founders of Hermeus and its Chief Product Officer, was a senior engineer at SpaceX for 5 years, including working on the Falcon 9 reuse program.
Something tells me the similarities to SpaceX aren't coincidental.
I have a few questions 😂 quarterhorse why are the rivets proud of the planes skin ? Shouldn't they be smooth ? 🤔 is the turbine section like a high bypass jet giving clean flow to the ram jet?
Surprised they let you film the planes that much. That weaving company wouldn't let you show anything.
market for the weaving company is huge and cutthroat. they also have a very developed system. These guys will have exactly one customer for the next two decades and they're still trying to catch up to anyone who would be interested in this concept.
Still, it's pretty cool
But the SR-71 hat a turbo ram as well or did it? Also the big jet in the animation looks similar to the XB70
