How To Install Fuel Pump On 97 Grand Prix GTP (NC_GTP)

  • This week I'm installing a new fuel pump assembly in my 97 grand prix GTP.
    Tips:
To release line pressure before the job, pull the Fuel pump relay (in the box under the hood) and crank the car untill it won't start.
Make sure of the part number on top of the sender for your car, as there are more than one option GM used through this model.
What is one of the worst, most annoying repairs you have had to do on your car? let me know in the comments.

You forgot to mention that there can be two different codes on the pump itself. That would mean two different pumps and you should have included how to relieve fuel pressure prior to removing the fuel pump and disconnecting the battery otherwise good job

I'm surprised you didn't mention the need to replace the Metri-Pack 150 connector. Every new pump (especially Delphi) comes with a new connector and bulletin about why it's critical to replace them.

My 2002 GTP has the ring with notches that you have to turn. Is there a trick to getting it back on???
I can only get mine to turn about half way.
I tried hitting it with a hammer and screw driver. I wonder if it has to be on a certain way. The fuel pump is down in the notch like its supposed to.

Hi I've been having issue's with my 02 GTP supercharged not wanting to stay running. It first started off I've changed the mass airflow sensor and about to replace the tee vacuum assembly. So far I can't come up with any changes besides running more rough and occasionally blowing black smoke. I know the black smoke is from dirty deposit from the engine but when it dies it gives no warning. When it first started dying it was always on a small downward incline so i figured it may have something to do with the fuel pump. Any idea's?

@@SalemDoyle I'm more or less going off of forums. It had mentioned that the fuel pump resistor was near the washer fluids but when i go to check i see the fuel relays. There's supposed to be 2 of them but I'm only seeing one and another spot where it goes next to it. But It'll crank up at first just like normal then 5 to 9 minutes later it'll die but all lights and power are still on. The fuel pump turns on but it says online the same issues and how the resistor will allow it to use the little bit of gas in the lines then after heating up it'll stop the pressure? It's not throwing any codes after i changed the mass airflow sensor though. I've been told the esc be going bad, the resistor is what i had read but also the cps

Hey man, thanks for the reply. I just got the new pump in. Problem is that the pump can slide from side to side in the housing with the new snap ring and everything installed. Should there be any play at all? It literally can move as I just try to move it around. New oring, new snap ring. Installed, but I can slide it slightly like the oring or snap ring doesn't really lock it down super tight. I know if I add gas and drive it, it will probably leak gas because it doesn't feel completely sealed. I really don't feel like the pump is sealed, but it is installed correctly. Any thoughts? Thanks!

214K+ mile! Cool!Does your GTP have the fuel pump resistor installed on it? There was a TSB on mine that the stock one would allow too much amps or volts (don't recall) but that killed my fuel pump. Just a heads up on that. (mine was a 98' not sure if that was a thing on the 97's)
