It's strange that most of my artblocks these days come with lack of ideas when ideas were something I used to never run out of, but I'm thinking that I switched my brain into working in "art goals" rather than "art ideas". I'm seeing some of the drawbacks of this now... it means that when I sit at my desk I have to think about the abstract. All the "fundementals" I could possibly have to work on, and I end up being unable to prioritise what.
(BTW I love this sinewy conjoined form that seems to be embracing/clawing at itself)

I remember reading in some book that goals will do nothing for you, what truly matters is the process, the actual day to day and doesn't that make sense after all? Like you said if you know know yourself, if you have a clue on what you should do with your life doesn't that come togheter and you can stop wasting time? I think that all this motivation thing, goal settings and all this madness, some part of It come from people not knowing or not having courage to live for what they truly belive and turning life into a big boring chore. Bro I just love this channel

This was really insightful. I’ve always thought I can only draw this, after I draw that. It became a list of overwhelming prerequisites to do anything, and this video reminded me to JUST DRAW. It’s obvious, but frequently purposefully overlook. Your video provided me with something to contemplate, and I’m already more productive because of it. So, thanks!

This speaks so much to me Steven. I keep watching this video time and time again because I keep frustrating myself with my goals when all I have to do is know how much time I have (or may not have) today and what can I create with it that will make me happy, today. I also find it more satisfying that accept that sometimes an artwork will take more than 1 day and plan so that you do something fun each day even if you don't finish it that day. This works better than being productive. You end up doing more if you are having fun. Thanks again and looking forward to your next video. Your work is awesome by the way. What patience, knowledge, and amazing forms!

As you may very well know in the field of classical music composition one will be considered a student or a mature artist. A mature composers style will continue to grow but they are considered complete in the skills necessary to, compose. Your take on goals is an important one and it is how we view goals. It’s like a crutch to be able to say one is never ready, that ones art is lacking.
Learning never ends. Burdening oneself with manufactured goals should, at some point, end. Thank you for some very good brain food.

what to do when you fly between different art fields, writing, drawing, acting, directing , singing, etc... and you feel like they are all fantastic but you never feel at home but you immerse yourself 100% , the teachers or coach loves you and feel you got the point of what they want to teach and is all fine for the short time when you are in the flow of that art, but then you feel other students feel envy, irritation you learn and move on too quickly for them and so for this reason of feeling alone, feeling not connected to the group you fly on to the next artistic hobby and feel you do not know how to create a community of artistic friends and belong somewhere but really am longing for stability in life and a community to rely on.... I can't sit and talk shit about others, or namedrop people in a field of art, I just want to immerse myself in the projects, in the roles of the play, or the technique someone is teaching and share ideas and inspirations one can get from such days with others, but others just want to compare who is good, who knows who and that no one stands out too much over them as in being brighter or having a more natural connection to the instructor etc.. but I am the way I am, I learn easily and I want to make projects happen, I am great as a director but horrible as someone lower in the hierarchy of the group, at least to them I am.... I feel like the constant outsider that dream of a friendly community of some type of art, performance or not where I can belong... but got no idea if that is even possible... is like my mind was hacked and cannot connect

I have a very self-deprecating mindset that keeps telling me that "if I'm not THIS GOOD at everything, I'm a total failure". I've always been like this my whole life, and what I sowed from it was just a bunch of lost opportunities due to "I will not even bother doing it anymore because I'm not good enough". I've been learning how to draw for about 2 years now. Started with pencil, and I love it. But I really love digital painting, and quickly moved into it. However, I started to think that If I can't paint using oils/acrylics or any traditional medium, I'm just an imposter. But watching this video today helped me realize that we don't need to be good at everything. I've seen some masterful artists that only painted digitally, or ones that only painted using watercolors, or oils, etc. And what I learned is that they are all just mediums. Nothing more than that. They all have their qualities and downsides, and it's ok to like one over another. Your words shed light on some really dark shadows that were making me doubt myself and feel like trash. Thanks a lot for the words, Steven. You are awesome.

Very interesting thoughts. I’ll probably listen to this a few times to wrap my head around it completely😂 Something I don’t agree with (that’s if I understood you correctly) is you can’t just decide to put better colors on the canvas, or draw better forms. It is something that you must practice right? And if you don’t set goals how do you practice properly? Goals are the desire to do something that you can’t do now. You set the goal, so that sometime in the future you will achieve that goal.

    • @Abdaado
      @Abdaado 2 года назад

Yes, I think the same as you do! How do I improve whitout targeted practice? The solution can't be just "don't strive to improve, because improvement is a goal imposed by what you think you should be". There IS a level you should be at, depending on what you want to do. And you achieve that (before dying) with goals.
      Maybe I'm just missing something.

I loved riding bmx a few years ago, i always push myself to the limits and practice nonstop for new tricks, until I bottlenecked hard on one of my dream trick, I tried really hard for 2 years and I just couldn’t get it. It got me really unmotivated. It even fucked up my mental health in college.
Now that I just focus on drawing, I actually don’t have any goal and any technique that I planned to work on. And I found my art progress goes up surprisingly well. I just learn the techniques when I feel like learning them. I’ve been drawing for almost 6 years now, I just try to draw everyday, I don’t draw if I don’t feel like it.
It’s really fascinating to see the thinking of “wanting to improve” can really fuck up your progress sometimes. You could become really impatient when you didn’t see any results.

I have to comment on this, because I may simply just not understand. I found out that having goals for life make me excited to do stuff. They remove the heaviness of getting things done. From the big ones, like studying for an exam, to the little ones, like writing an e-mail. Having goals suddenly made my life structured, instead of a messy chaos, and gave me the feeling that I had control, that I could reach what I had in my mind. Thinking about how to reach my goals made me realize what had a negative impact on my state of mind (like smoking pot everyday, which I stopped), and what did have a positive one (like going to the gym, going out with friends, meditating). They add a new joy to the learning process. All that said, goals did bring the feeling of "having to be enough" to reach this and that.
Let's talk about art. I don't know what kind exactly, but I want to be an artist. Or better, I want to be able to make great pictures. Also, I want to make a lot of money (as passively as I can) to avoid working for 40 years in a 9 to 5 job that I don't like. These 2 things combined give me a goal: become an artist. Make a business.
And how do you do that? That's the part I don't get. I don't think I'm not deserving of peace, I just think I won't be able to reach that goal if I don't make targeted studies to improve a certain aspect. For example, I studied the torso using proko videos, and it is definitely the part that I'm most confortable with! I couldn't do that just thinking about the fact that I want the torso looking better in "this" drawing.
On the other hand, and that's where I align with what you think, this process made me go on an endless journey of trying to understand the best way to practice and the best things to practice, which change everytime I change the job I want to have or the pictures I want to make.
Also having to be constant on social media 1) made me analyze other artist and understand better what I like, but 2) frustrates me because I'm actually still not sure.
I'm VERY interested in what you said about writing what you like in pictures and using it as a compass. But I'm not sure how it can work if you don't actively improve on fundamentals.
I'm sorry the comment is so long, I don't know if you, or anyone, will read it, but if you do I'd really appreciate your opinion :)
Always a lot to think though, thanks Steven

I totally feel u, i think """goals""" are important too and as strange as It may sound, i dont think Steven Said that ALL goals dont matter, i think he Just stated that the goals u set for yourself using that counsiness part of you might sometimes, if not always, be deciving u into being too traped into the future and not enjoying the physical NOW. The examples u gave TOTALLY made sense, studing for a exam, to hit the gym, writing a email and bla bla bla, but do u realize that these goals here are an end to themselfs??? U hit the gym because exercing is good for your health, It's a clear win in THE NOW moment, even styding can be that, If u enjoy the the subject or If u have an exam here in 3 months... Now, having a goal so distant as " becoming an artist, doesn't matter what kind of it"... Is probably what is making u get into this endless journey of trying to understand the best way to practice and the best things to practice loop (you're Lost)..... Is certainly what made me fall into this trap. I was a lot like u some time ago, until i Just stoped and started to Just think about what exactly i like about a picture now, for instance, i really enjoy fanarts, i also like gestural mistycal paintings with good colors and awesome designs like ahmedsaldoori art, really inspired by him and various other artists. I let myself enjoy ALL of that and try to be creative with that on my work, but for that, as a beginner artist i have to practice the fundamentals, anatomy perspectiv, gesture, values etc etc, but i dont practice these like a burden, im always immedeatly doing them using subjects that i like or Just apply tbem asap, so u see, learning them have a direct NOW need, because they impact on my personal drawing directly, they are "goals" too. Anyways, sometimes i still struggle with It too u know, but paying attention and being mindfullness can really avoid u to not be caught in these traps for long. i hope this helps u a bit, theres still more things i would like to say but is already too many lines, lol, Sorry

@@ewertonyago6843 Yes, goals have no meaning, nothing has. But If I set the goal to have an healthy body, it will improve my life. You're right when you say that having such a distant goal as "being an artist" is what makes one lost. There are too many ways. But, since I'm typing this comment 2 months later, I can say that having that vision constantly present in my mind made me pick a road. Maybe it will not be the right one, but If I weren't lost, searching for a way to this big goal, I wouldn't have a road to pick.
And let me say, I've never been more excited (and scared!) about life.
That said, it is defnitely important to learn to enjoy every single bit of what you make. For now, I still don't totally understand Steven. I find that having a goal for my art just sparks more creativity and desire to make stuff.
Thank you very much for your answer, don't worry about the lenght of it :)

Ohhh that's great to read and again, Just to make It clear, i don't think Steven said that goals don't matter at all, "learning to enjoy every single bit of what u make" that's in my interpretation what Steven means, not only in this video, but for the most part of the things he says and do in this channel. I think maybe u don't understand because is not for u, u clearly see the joy and importance of the art making, and setting the goals makes It more menagable, this video is for those people who care so much about the goals and forget to enjoy things ( in my opinion, i might be wrong). I understand a bit because i've been there. And about the lost thing u said, i think sometimes we really need to let ourselves feel lost, i don't think that's a bad thing (If It was, i would have quit drawing FOR SURE hehe), and im happy that u made your mind and is feeling excited :)

@@ewertonyago6843 Yes this will be a reminder for me, if I see myself getting carried away with goals and not actually enjoying what I'm doing. It can always happen.
      Thank you :)

I started drawing an year ago, so I have a lot to learn, though I have only one real goal: like Saitama's way, I want to be better than I was yesterday. Keeping my goals low, I'll beat it everytime and with that I got no limits to what I can get :3

The funny thing about this is I feel like I spent most of my art creativity on this setting goal thing rather than on my own artistic expression in drawing.

I think we all got this goal setting mindset. Now we have to be careful of healthy goal ( ex: I have to practice painting 2 a week) and non productive goal ( I have to post 2 picture on social media every week).

Embracing your artist mind in a very non-artist friendly world is amazing in itself. Trying to remember that. When I just follow my artistic whims, that is when I make the greatest strides. Goals are sometimes ill informed. Like I would like to become a full time concept artist in a year, but exactly how do I control that? What if I need this time to explore art in my way to make discoveries? It doesn't matter when my dream happens and if I can just hold onto the absolute joy I feel while creating, then im fulfilling myself.

    Hi Steven,
For you for all your video, it really helped me and my wife !
    QUESTION :
Could you please do a video about personal project ? I’m so afraid of past experiences, that it’s hard to start a project again no matter the scope (a project with multiple drawing together)
    Thank you!

I get completly mind blowing, my english its not my first lenguage and i was drawing while listening but when i start to understand where he was going and start to freak out a little because its against so many ideas people myself youtubers, and its strike because its actually meaking sense. I need time to really resolve this I am very strategy person goal oriented and all that not only because thats what art people talk a lot but also beacause its kinda my personality must of the time i have plans for the future and a little scared of things dont go like i want to. im rambling , iam so f confuse with dizzy thoughts

I still have some doubts about this, there are more physical and objective things that i want to achive and taking this mind sate I am not sure i will get them, i want to go to university and they probably gonna ask in my portafolio of pices with color, thing that Iam not really interested about, there is problem there or i was thinking also to get a job in a particular indie game studio and they ask for particular knowledge. So there is a problem there ?

@@randolph8498 mate, i know it's been a month since u comented but i think i know what your problem is. First u have to know that what Steven is talking here is the art making in a more personal level, that is, If u're doing it as a hobby and for the FUN of it. NOW, if u are thinking about WORKING with art, that is not personal art, THAT is playing with the industry, you gonna be playing the industry game, It's Just a game, what YOU personally likes about art dont matter for them, that is what working means in ALL senses, u bring value to other people's life, so in your case, if u dont have any interest in color but u think that you'll need to learn it because other people Will need u to Paint with color, yes, u totally WILL. I struggled to realize this too u know, when i was thinking about working with art making, the solution for myself really was realizing that i would not want to pay this price, that i would stick with drawing and enjoying it like a hobby for the longest time possible, and then maybe one day i can make money out of it. NOW, for your case, you really have to analize for urself, think about it, when i say that u gonna play the industry game, It not always has to be something bad, there are many artists Lucky enough to find job that suits not only the clients testes but their own so there are a Million ways to solve your problem and only u can do It, remember that even If u only likes working with Black and white, U CAN always do It for YOURSELF on your free time, so try to not stress so much about it. I Hope u find your answer
