Love drawing with pens. I appreciated the composition tip at the end. I rarely think of that when I practice. Once I drew two pigs and wasn't paying attention. My wife asked why the one pig was coming out of the butt of the other. I then noticed that the way I had drawn them, it did look like one of the pigs was coming out of the butt of the other. Hahaha, your comment reminded me of that and I will practice being more careful. Your drawing looks so masterful and epic. Thanks!

I don't think we should say the cavemen knew how to draw, when no cute anime girl was ever found in these caves. They had a lot to learn !

about references, it's very true that they are extremely necessary to the process of learning to draw and paint because most of what you draw and paint are pure references from reality.
drawing from the top of the head is basically using your references of reality that you've allready observed and analyzed to the degree where you are knowledgable enough about it to draw and paint it.
you need to know the subject matter to replicate it into a believable image, everything an artist makes is a reference to something, taken from somewhere, they can't create something from nothing that's just not feasible.

I had a friend who has a photographic memory. When she was 3, her drawings had insane amounts of detail, e.g. a horse that was maybe simple in it's technique, but had knees, ankles, even a line for some muscle definition. She can pour out things from memory, just like that with pen, it's insane. I always saw her as the ultimate goal, but that is just not how my brain works.
I was unmotivated for years, as at every attempt at drawing the difference between me and her just seemed bigger. But you know what? After all of these years, I noticed that she had put zero effort in evolving her technique. Although good, nothing changed in 20 years! While I finally ditched that urge for perfection and just started scribbling imperfections.
I may not be able to create as effortlessly like her, just anything and everything from memory- but I have progressed so much. Learned to paint, draw and create in almost every technique and I'm nowhere near ready. I came to the conclusion that I just prefer to be me, including the need for references.

@@kizu6669 yeah, but the thing i don't know about photographic memory is if they can turn an object in their mind spatially with that sort of memory, otherwise it's just a nice photo reference.
but in any case yeah it tends to be like that when you get something very easily to start that you kinda stagnates later on and have to struggle to overcome that just because it was that easy.
but then again painting is not all about reference, it's just a necessary thing to have to be able to analyze subject matters before it's ingrained into your memory.
besides a little artistic interpretation can be fun now and again ;)

I love your q and a sequences. Especially today. I believe that everybody once felt bored or unable to create something subjectively worth of being born into this world. After all it seems to be all about just doing it. Thanks for taking the time sharing your elaborated thoughts with us. Haha"... Just let it flow out.."😂

It might sound like posturing but I have believed that being your own biggest fan thing in my own philosophy for the longest time and hearing someone else mention it somehow revalidates that stance a little bit more in my brain.
Edit: Lol I just remembered I have even asked you in the past if you were the biggest Steven Zapata fan!
btw love all the weird and interesting thoughts you inject. Its really a wonderful experience listening to you while drawing!

The truth is with art (and mostly everything) is IF you want to get good at it. YOU need to work at it. If you don't like your current skills with backgrounds then draw them more. and more. and possibly more! Quit worrying that your background work isn't the best yet it will be IF you keep at it. Also don't be shaded by the others who have taken the time to get good at it already. Focus on your own success and you will succeed at it eventually. Not all successes are overnight (99% are not).

  • @ha_ruh

Question! If the art doesn't care about how you feel when you're making it, why do you have to be your biggest fan? I agree that we should be excited about our own stuff but that just leads me to drop a piece if I'm not excited. But you said to draw anyway, even if you feel bored - how would you balance this conflict?

the goblin call out starting at 28:11 LMFAO..... Holy crap im sold, im buying one of your videos lol.... Anyway have you tried the Pilot namiki falcon fountain pen? a bit expensive but the gold nib allows easier line weight shifts... although that might kind of defeat the whole reason why you used the fountain pen for this study... Still you might like the falcon fountain pen.

Hi :) I have a question ! You say you like pencil because it forces you to slow down. But is going fast a bad thing ? I like drawing fast. I'd like to be even faster. Should I force myself to slow down ?

    • @StevenZapataArt
      @StevenZapataArt  3 года назад +2

I would rarely advise forcing anything. But if you ever find yourself looking at your lines and thinking they lack nuance, complexity and sophistication- try giving yourself double the time for each one.
