Drawing Meditation #1: How to get in The Zone

  • I've been wanting to do this for a long time! This exercise begins our journey into "The Zone." With the instructions and points discussed in this video, we can move on to more advanced material in future guided drawing sessions.
Future sessions will be shorter videos you can listen to while warming up or sketching to kick you into the zone, and hopefully make you see drawing differently. Things got weird here- but it only gets weirder. Future sessions will take "being in the zone" as a given, and show you that drawing is truly odd.

not gonna lie - i was near tears the entire video because for the longest time I've been struggling to "get into the zone"... but man you just helped me get there in a flash. i had no idea my intensely-critical intrusive thoughts were weighing me down. but i just kept drawing today. i feel like a burden has been lifted. thank you.

      I relate to this entirely
ive been struggling to get through orders that were made months ago now... and having Steven in my ear while I was trying to sketch something vague and aimless was really helpful to my mood and I felt the same emotional reaction to "oh wow, maybe its just intrusive thoughts and not just these small things like the light in a certain way or how I ate."
its about finding peace in your actions, allowing yourself actual freedom with your hands than feeling confined by your own expectations

This really is invaluable. Especially for anyone who has done a little bit of mindfulness practice seperate from art or their daily lives... combining the two practices and allowing yourself and your art to just to be is what this whole game is all about. Thank you.

I came through these meditation videos by a friend's recommendation in my most time of need!
and looking into how the issue i'm facing ( struggling to make original artwork ) is common and experienced by almost every artist that you decided to make a video about is so relieving !
My second relief came when you concluded your talk by saying (Get out of your own way) !
That was the best and most inspiring sentence, it truly concluded the entire issue to me, my past experiences and art journey was chaining me down whispering if the lines i'm making are right or wrong, and what the drawing (should) and (should not) look like.
It's been a LONG LONG time since I felt free while scribbling without expectation, drawing for the sake of drawing, not the sake of the result.
Thank you sir ! best of wishes from K.S.A

now days people tend only to credit the so called "Artists" only when this people Earn a living doing art whatever that is. but the "non-artistic" people outside don´t realize that to be an artist does mean to practice it and not only earn money with it. i´m an artist myself i do music and drawing, today i have a regular job not artistic because it was the safest way to put food on the table for my family. but i do sell my stuff here and there, but i won´t see myself so limited as an artist like many people like to see, as i said above.
    thank you for the inspiration

THAT was cool. I did this exercise with ya. I have been drawing everyday for a little over a year. I have about 7ish sketch books filled up. I think its interesting you call it the zone..ive been calling it ZEN. I ended up with incurable blood cancer in April of 17' ..So with that and all the worry and thoughts that come with that, drawing made it all go away for at least a little while. I hid my drawing from people for a long time. I think i had 3 books filled up before i started sharing. im still not calling myself an "Artist" I just found you the other day..i was blown away by your shading video.

This literally changed everything. I asked an art discord I'm in if anyone had any advice on what I could do to help myself draw better, I told them I draw my best when I'm talking to someone on the phone or in a voice chat. That things just flowed so much easier when I was talking but I didn't want to need to be having a long conversation with someone in order to draw cause I love to draw for over 4hrs at a time... and this was linked to me. Everything about how I was thinking about this "hang up" has completely changed... it's not a hang up, it's just my road to the zone and now I know what I'm looking for to get myself to that place. Thank you so so much for making this.

Wow! Thank you for this. I drew a lot from the time I could hold a pen. Then at age 20 I stopped. Three years ago I picked it up again. Struggeled hard to find the patience, but I have been working hard to get drawing into my daily life again. But it wasnt until tonight, starting with abstract squibles. All of a sudden I realized Im doing what I thought I was struggling with. Drawing without effort, loosing sense of time. Relaxed. And to my surprise I have drawn a gnarly treenig. Only yesterday I wondered how long it would take for me to get the calm patience to draw a gnarly tree. Thank you for showing me I am always already there, where I want to be, in the practice of drawing!❤

I feel that being in the zone and sometimes listing to someone just talking about art in any aspect...is fine to me. I feel that drawing from my head, relaxing is the best. And yeah, enjoying something by drawing whatever of each line that goes on paper (perfect or not) is a lot enjoyable than other activity or not doing nothing at all. Living in the moment is the best thing.
    -It's calming❤️

I look at the drawing the 2nd day and I can see everything - deep valleys and peaks, struggling and success ... depression and joy. My hands were doing it and my consciousness rating of good and bad had a break. I hesitated, thank you for encouraging me to do this step. Nice lesson! Really helpful.

I started out drawing random lines and just kind of flowed into drawing what I have recently been studying, but with that joy that comes from discovery. Without the distraction of criticism I just draw for the fun of it which is exactly what I have been looking for. Thank you.

Love your method and made my eyes about to tear as a sole artist around 18:00, it was convincing and very empathetic thanks. Good vid.

I think when you can make people feel something with your craft, that is when you are an artist. That is why we call singers artists

Thank you. Returning to drawing after 20 years deciding it "wasn't for me". A teacher like you is exactly what i was looking for. Tenacity in doing what we enjoy is so important; and reminding ourselves that we can keep enjoying it, despite the pains that can come from the process. That, relatively speaking, nothing matters but the act itself. I also appreciate that you organize your playlist from top to bottom, oldest to newest. I'm a bit of a completionist 😅

завидую твому терпению, никогда не мог так досконально обработать свой рисунок, даже не плохой, всегда боялся его испортить

Well put! Just tuned in to your channel after years of following other artists "rant" about their process. But don't think anyone touched base as well as this.
Wish you good fortune in all your endeavours!
