    I have made the mistake of telling my family I want to do art as a career and they basically just pretended I didn’t say that and constantly ask me if I’m looking for a better job and getting overtime at work.the truth is I come home from work and take a short nap and then I draw for 4-5 hours until bed because I’m secretly trying to achieve that dream. I’ve noticed bosses especially can’t fathom this concept because they get annoyed when I’ve told them I only want 8 hours a day because I’m trying to get better at art. Even typing this out actually makes me feel silly or like I’m making excuses or something lol. Anyways, your videos are some of the better content for artists and give me some motivation when I need it. I really enjoy real-time drawing videos too so I wanted to give positive feedback

      So, I’m an electrician because it pays the bills and I have a family to take care of. It’s an okay line of work but I’d much rather be perfecting my art. If I never do art professionally I’ll be okay because my life has been great so far with the decisions I’ve made. However, the older I get, I know the more I’ll regret if I let my talent go to waste. Keep up the work, buddy, and good luck!
      And btw, no one knows what’s best for you besides yourself.

      I will try to not be angry reading that lol for me it would be the same if your family asked if you’re going to rip out a very important organ to give to somebody else and then die
      Edit: but they don’t know that of course. That’s the real tragedy.

    watched and listened to the whole thing. So awesome for you to do this Steven. Thanks so much for sharing real time process, you're right in the fact that all artists see online is sped up videos, not truly understanding how long it takes and then being frustrated that they can't achieve results in that time, I certainly fell victim to that. Your talks about willingness to spend 100 hours on a drawing and not really doing "thumbnails" really resonated with me. I find in my own work especially paintings that I am unable to render to the degree I like to due to impatience and putting texture, grooves, local colours changes, and much more surface detail first because I can't fathom working for over a couple of hours. Lastly, thanks for including your personal schedule on breaks and time to step away from the drawing table, you're so right in saying that students seek permission from professionals and to hear a professional talk about hand cramps and getting a drink of water seems so blatantly obvious yet when I find myself struggling the same way feel guilty about it.
    10/10 video, will watch again just to imitate your tempo!!!

      @@pogz1 For a critique on your work ( I saw the darling in the franxx video) I would say you should do more portrait studies so you can be drawing more realistic faces, and watch your shading so it doesn’t appear flat, but your doing great! You’ll feel like your art isn’t improving until you get ahead, then you’ll look back and see all the progress you have made. Watch channels like Steven, Ahmed Aldoori, and Moderndayjames too, they put out amazing work and resources for artists to learn from.

    Speaking of, I've totally dived into "Master Studies" for the past few months. Gave myself an excuse to spend 30 to 40 hours on a single piece and see what type of detail I could inject into my work, and making each piece an effort for a specific goal/challenge. It's been very rewarding, especially being more flexible in the traditional art side of things, it feels good to have it become more natural in the digital medium. Thanks for the video :)

    Confidence and not feeling overwhelmed, is my number one problem. As it probably is with numerous others. Am I reaching past my abilities? Am I actually capable of doing this? Is on my mind with every drawing. Needless to say, I have A LOT of unfinished work. It gets to a point in the drawing where you hit a block. And then I'm not good enough is poking your brain with every stroke.

    Although throughout my time posting comments on your channel I have likely contradicted myself, I was super happy to hear you speak about drawing for the sake of joy, peace and exploration.
    I love to feel content, joyful and excited about life-but I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel almost crippled by depression (within the last year an a half). I mention this because although I do have a longing to live off of making art, I still love to draw, even when I have no expectation that my work will be seen, bought or that I will somehow feel validated by it. I love the process of making art-probably much more than I like the end result in many cases (I’m not trying to be self-deprecating, I just find sketching and problem solving interesting-Just like how I prefer DaVinci’s notebooks more than his paintings).
    I think it’s really important to put an emphasis on enjoying the act-which is why I enjoy your content so much. For me, drawing has been the light that’s kept me going through a really difficult time-and hearing other artists speak about their experiences with their craft makes me feel less alone-like I’m not the only person who is concerned with turning cubes or trying to figure out how a birds’ wing folds! I don’t believe I’ll ever truly feel 100% satisfied, regardless of how much I improve (whatever this means), but that keeps it exciting! So much to learn and so much to create-a beautiful thing!

    • @StevenZapataArt
      @StevenZapataArt  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for sharing. It's hard to know what to say in the face of something like crippling depression- and that's why drawing is such a powerful tool. You don't need to say, or understand, or integrate anything. You can just draw, and in the just-doing there is peace.

    I like what you say about the nervous vs duty energy! In my head I call it the hirearchy of attendance something like that. If I don't respect it I don't finish the drawing! I am glad I have the same problems as you it's very encouraging!
    Steven: ''Here I lay bare my limitations before your very eyes!''
    Audience: ''Steven's limitations are so cool! I want some too. What are mine?''
    I think that sums up pretty much everything happening here.

    Frankly Steven, I don't care whatsoever about how you hold the pencil.
    What I'm here for is to hear you talk. To hear your thoughts, experiences and ideas. However you hold your pencil doesn't make me a damn difference.
    Altough if you want to talk about how you hold your pencil and why you do it that way I believe it to be an intriguing experience to hear about, for I am as a being curious about other individuals' own experiences and perspective especially on a fundamental level such as why they hold the pencil in the particular grip and angle in of which they do.
    But that is indeed vastly different from telling someone they should hold their pencil in a particular manner such as to tell them it will make their work better or their technique more sufficient.
    I will assume you, being you, can manage to make your own sense out of what I am saying. But the point is, worry not. Just do you as you do. It is your thoughts and experience for which I am here.

I think...if you want an image that is more than the equivalent of wallpaper for a home...you do it with something that makes people want to stop and stare.
    I guarantee you, that if you put this on a wall that displayed coffee shop drawings and landscapes drawings...and portraits...THIS one would be the one people were drawn to. Maybe they would Love it or be Freaked out... or even Hate it! ...It would still be what stands out. Every. Damn. Time. 🤘💪

    I really want to see more videos/livestreams like this. I like to have you in the background, sometimes muted(guilty!) so I can have music playing over it while I work in my own sketchbook.
    I hope you do even longer ones. 41:45 you say it's unwatchable but there are many people who really need long form videos of people drawing as background footage while they draw.

    In my short and absolutely awful (my fault, not theirs) time going to a local community college for art it wasn't any of the technical advice that stuck with me. The only things I really remember from their lessons was the encouragement my professor's gave to try and get me past my typical teenaged self loathing. Funny how I grew up watching Bob Ross religiously, and it still took 20 years for his message to actually sink in.

    Those few minutes it takes to put down the holding lines make a world of difference in my opinion, they really tie the drawing together and make it pop, and it came out awesome. Do you have any tips for choosing where to place them? How do you decide where to make heavier/thicker lines vs more delicate ones? Does it have to do with the darkness of the area or gravity, or is it just one of those “wherever it looks good” things? I’m really intrigued!

    • @___9136
      @___9136 3 года назад +2

      since Steven hasn't replied yet: look up 'shadow pattern' especially in old art books. Think of all of the holding lines as one whole pattern that should be interesting on it's own account (as a 2d pattern - not being too evenly divided, having a sense of gesture, repetition n spacing, etc).
      But before that, think of your intent - what is important in the picture? what should the viewer's eye return to again and again? and then the next most important thing, and so on. Then make the most contrasting edges on the most important thing, and the less important ones with decreasing contrast, so the viewers eye wants to travel from the least important gradually towards the most.
      'contrast' here is meant in the broadest sense of properties that are in a minority in the picture. for example in a grayscale image, any spot of color would be a point of contrast. Or detailed texturing within an image that is generally smooth. Or dark points in a generally light image.
      Then you can consider the blending of those properties, eg blending light-dark along a line, or less-more textured.. that makes the statement of what is important to the viewer less crude and more integrated. Comparing good b/w cartooning to good fine art drawings illustrates that difference.
      There are certain guidelines that can be extracted from practicing the above - eg. dark must alternate with light to fully show form, so having uniformly black lines is not ideal.

      The response that ____ left is spot on! I mostly darken them on under planes and lighten them for planes that face the light. I also darken them in areas of overlap between body parts, at the light will be greatly occluded there.

    Mr Zapata, I've never felt comfortable or skilled enough to take the first step toward finding my way into an actual instructional setting with an artist to learn their trade, but I would be very interested in taking an online workshop with you. I'm 32, I just got interested in art and drawing a literal few years ago and I know I'm super late to the game, but I would love to have the chance to learn how you think about and approach your work.

    Sitting here. Drawing. Listening to this as sort of an anchor for my overactive brain in the process. 30:36 I heard this, "Do not let the random choices of some computer geniuses define the kind of art you make", and had to look at the screen like, "Hell yeah. I like you." And, damn it you were staring right back at me and I almost forgot it's a screen. That was weird, but cool.
    Right anyway, back to it. Got two hours to go.

    Let me leave one more comment on this video after watching the full 2 hours 45 minutes and 11 seconds of this absolutely eye opening video.
    I would just like to thank you for telling us that our perception is skewed of what a sketch looks like because I am unfortunately a person who has a skewed perception.
    I am trying to relearn the process of completing a piece of art starting with the fundamentals.
    forgive me for I have not had a pleasant childhood in the slightest way shape or form and thus lead me to not focus in school as what I should have.
    I am an adolescent now and I intend on making a career of art but to do so I will need to revisit the fundamentals which I sadly could not focus on in my younger years as a result of trauma.
    On a side note drawing the devil is probably my favourite subject matter, okay maybe not just the devil but mental anguish as well.
    Kind Regards

    I would absolutely love to participate in a workshop like this!! Art has been a very solitary journey for me, and whilst I suppose it is a rather individual thing, The opportunity to work with someone as thoughtful and introspective as you, and being able to explore a lot of these spiritual aspects with other students would be something I'd cherish greatly. I do just wonder whether 'skill' would be a factor with how much I would be a good fit? As I'm really not so good technically as it stands, though perhaps having said that, perhaps the fact I'm worrying about that as a blockade is indicative I'd really benefit from something like this xD? Ah regardless, I really appreciate the fact that you're reaching out to us in this kind of way. It's a beautifully kind thing.

    • @StevenZapataArt
      @StevenZapataArt  3 года назад +1

      Only if it's distracting you! If it's keeping you at the drawing table and happy I don't see how it's a problem. Some people say you wind up "drawing to" the music but I actually think that only happens with songs that are 100% funky jams and that's just not all of them.
