My uncle had a real one, I remember being 5 or 6 years old, and we actually stood it up on the rear doors, climbing side of a mountain. No seat belts, ah fond memories from almost 40yrs ago. Lol.
I'd paint the blue one with a slightly darker shade of the same blue, and let the original colour bleed through a bit on the sky-facing surfaces for a bit of a "sunbleached" effect. Loving the Harbody Crawler Co.'s efforts on packaging! Really shows the quality and attention to detail when one considers the packaging, whether it's the blister packs, boxes, or even catchy title graphics with theme music that gets stuck in your head all day when anybody even says the word "weekly"...
Hahaha! Totally! 😄 My favourite part is the enthusiastic upper limbs choreography though. I could watch that all day! 😁 I find myself thinking of opportunities to do it myself but, sadly, they don't come up. 😥😋 Jokes aside, I'm loving this series! You can always find something different in each episode. 🙏👏
Awesome video, as always! If I'm lucky enough to win that awesome FJ40 body, I'd paint it Heath Gray with two coats of varying rust colors underneath. Then I'd let the magic begin with all the rock scars and trail rash! Wish me luck please! Good luck everyone!
That The Hard body Crawler co. Is pretty cool. I think I would pick one of the colors from '73 so it would be the same age as me. So either Heath Gray or Royal Blue. Thanks for the great content. Its nice seeing you every Thursday morning.
I would have to go with the mustard yellow with white top. My friend had one. I remember bouncing around in the back while off roading. Those back seats that faced each other where not comfortable
I would love to win this to turn my scx24 into something that looks a little cooler. I would probably paint mine brown to match the room that it is displayed in. I don't enjoy driving or working on the small scale stuff all that much, so let's make it a look a little nicer on that shelf. Thanks for all you do Matt!
Ha, I owned a real landcruser , same model, when I lived in New Zealand, loved it, and this brought back some cool memories of 4 weel driving around Lake Sumner on the south Island, epic fun... thanks for sharing Matt, great video as always. John
Love the look of the fj body, I think I'd go with the darker almost Forrest green Toyota color as I rode around in one that color when I was a kid and would build it to look like that truck from my childhood
I would use a pale orange from the 70's, juste because that's my favorite. Thanks for your what's on the bench serie, it's always a source of New purchase or ideas for paint evenings ;-)
I bought a new FJ40 in 1978. Mine was tan, seems it was a little darker than the kit, great color, really didn't show dirt! I think I would paint mine red, it was a very nice looking red by Toyota.
Great looking Green FJ! Just getting into the smaller scale with my 5 year old! We both watch “What’s on the bench” together! I’d go orange. Bright and rusty! Three way Monthly Mayhem with danny huynh creations would be awesome!! Great show!
I plan on getting a hard body crawler for my mom’s fiancé. He had an FJ for his first vehicle and he loves the scx24’s and the deadbolt I got him. Seems only fitting! Thanks for showing it off, it looks great!
I've seen that body a few times now and looks pretty solid. I'd paint one in a darker, more forest green and weathered as well. However I just ordered the hardbody Bronco to replace my old scx24 c10 body so don't pick me please. I don't have room for more bodies.
Definitely a white and light blue combo... maybe I decide to do it in a old washed out yellow like a friends truck he owned in real life... love your content 💯
Fantastic! Those Land Cruiser bodies are very cool and frankly has been the only reason to give me interest in a 1/24 RC. Oh yeah, hearing aide beige is my go to color choice for a vintage rig like this. Keep up the great content!
Pueblo brown! I love the earth tone colors on older vehicles. Recently got back into rc's and your channel has been a staple in my review process of new parts and kits to get me back into it, thank you for the videos, extremely entertaining and fun to watch and informative! And a little goofy, love the balance!
I have enjoyed every episode of what's on the bench and thank you for all the content. Last night's live stream takeover was hilarious and you and Josh had me laughing while I drove across Iowa.
I think I'd have to paint the hardbody lime green, the color that represents the form of cancer I had! Then do a nice patina look, the patina reminds me of what chemo did to my body! It still works but looks a little worn! Lol have a RAD day!
I fought my butt off to beat it, I'm one of the lucky ones! Survivors guilt is a real thing that I suffer from, I use it to motivate me to give back, share my story in hopes of inspiring ppl to never give up, I'm living proof it can be beaten. Was told I had 4 months to live when diagnosed, 13 years later I'm still here and now driving rc cars and using that to share my story!
I would paint it either red or spring green-like light green. The green is very fresh-looking, but red just goes well with anything (snow, leaves). Tough choice!
Id like to see the tan rust treated like that with the white top drip rails and center rysted too like sun faded rust and rust on front white. Grille! But yours looks awesome too! Love ur whats on the bench!
@@scalebuildersguild i hope to get my first rc at 52 yrs old here soon, on fixed soc sec disability income its hard to save up. But i want to build the trx builder kit so its gonna cost a bit. I would like to do the lowering of the f250 hitrail like u did ! I had a blue one that looked just like urs just a tad higher in the 80s, then a couple others later on. I miss em! But looked just like ur blue one u lowered! Love it. Wish i could afford one of each lol but iv always wanted a real rc and i have time now just not enuff green! But i watch ur channel all the time when i cant sleep and i think im all caught up. Keep goin love it and i can dream lol
Love the rust contrast with that green! If I won that kit, I would paint a warbird theme, like a Japanese Zero inspired paint scheme, or maybe a spitfire… oh yes with a duck egg blue roof! Thanks for all your inspiration!
I'd have to paint it storm gray, I have blue crawlers and green crawlers and I need a different color to mix it up. I'm interested to try weathering on my next build it looks awesome!
Great episode. Those little fj's are really cool. I think I'd paint mine a light blue. Yeah... light blue. I cant wait to donthe scxpro. I have been tempted many times to try the trenchers.... but I never pull the trigger on them. Will also be interesting to see the lizard system in a comp environment. The skiride (I hear the name.... then forget it haha) is going to be so cool.
10:40 Nice to see Axial getting back to roots with this Kit. If I had not already been in the middle of a Comp Rail build this might have pulled me back to another Axial purchase. It's quit possible I will be picking one up in the future when I am looking for another comp rig. Would like to see more on the Furitek Esc in future videos Programming features 💙BT💙
Really cool series to be honest, I’d paint mine orange or yellow with a white top. It looks really good, they done a really good job on that body. Keep up the good work.
Great Content as usual dude! I love the land cruiser, its my dream rig... My dad has one in forest green when I was young. It was are official hunting rig. We used it for about 25 seasons, then my dad retired it and gave it to one of my brothers. Then my brother, with out letting anyone know, sold it... so if I got a hard body land cruiser I would do it forest green like my dad's rig.
@@scalebuildersguild As a matter of fact we almost got into a fighter at my Dad's funeral over it... and no, me and my other brothers pretty much disowned him.
My friend had a full size version of this and it was a terracotta orange/red with white roof. It looked awesome and was in perfect condition. I very cool retro wagon. Thanks for the painting tips :)
I always enjoy watching this series and thanks so much for all the great tips. I have had one of the hard bodies in my wish list for a while now might half to get it and paint it a nice Navy haze grey of course.
I really like that navy blue they have! But if I were to do a different color, I’d try a light gray, maybe try the rusting technique as well. I’m excited to see the Skeeride in action!
A Orange body would look great with your chipping rusted method..was just checking out the Axial SCX24 Chevy K10 yesterday ..this alternate body would look..great in orange...would be my first 24th scale rc
Love these episodes of what's on the bench you done a awesome job on the land cruiser just the right amount of weathering, if I was to win I'd go with military green and turn it into a old used looking military truck 😁 good luck all
Love what's on the bench!! I think I would paint it with a snow camo theme, with plenty of weathering!! Since we don't get much snow here haha! Keep up the great work!!
I've seen a lot of purple RCs, and they all look amazing. I would go with a sky blue color with light coatings of white around the wheel wells that resemble clouds. Thanks for all the videos, learn something every time.
Very cool chipping method Matt! The truck turned out great! I personally would paint mine one of the original red colors like Solar Red or Tropical Coral. Cheers!
That looks awesome Matt love the attention to detail you put in to all your builds your a real inspiration to make a RC look like a real truck I’ve got 11 scx24s and love the scale look keep up the good work
Great video and review. These are always a good learning tool and seeing new options in the RC world. I would paint mine a lighter shade of blue, like a baby blue. I have a 2 year old boy and my wife loves that color. So then it would be a fun RC for her to drive around when we go on walks or save it for the little one to use.
I've been playing around with an idea of making an older truck with our local old road works administration livery (TVH). Basically all it is is really basic yellow with huge TVH-logo in red on the doors. This simple rusting effect would make it perfect, as well. A Land Cruiser would make a perfect period boss vehicle.
Id have to paint this hardbody the classic Pollox Orange color. I haven't seen many of them in the wild, would be neat to have my own! Thanks Matt for everything you produce for us to watch and enjoy!
Baby blue, and attempt that chipping method for sure. I love that rust effect and now I have a way to try it that makes a lot of sense! Cheers for that
Blue. Definitely blue and some sort of weathering. Looks fantastic Matt. Maybe with something this small I would be patient enough to do it. With most of my builds I seem to be in such a hurry to see them on the trails.
Wow, this almost makes me want to buy an scx24! Love the weathering job too. I think I would try something I've been wanting to do for a while. A bare metal look paint job. Maybe with some airbrushed rivets?

It’s really awesome to see all the new and innovative ideas coming to the hobby! If I were to win the blue version of this hard body kit I would challenge myself to paint it as rusty as possible… rusty, crusty brown but trusty!

I’d be all about the Aqua Net. And I would paint mine light/baby blue. A kid I grew up with’s dad had one in that color. That’s what I always think of when I imagine that vehicle.
Thanks for all of the content! I was especially excited to see your take on this one as it’s one of the nicest kits out there and your attention to detail always amazes me. I’d paint mine a baby bluish color with the white top. I like the way you define the small details like the creases and door jambs. Awesome job!
The hardbody came out amazing, noticeable, but still subtle, weathering. I prefer hairspray to the chipping medium, removes easier meaning less work, better looking chips. The top coat should be an acrylic, thinned with water, to again, make it easier to remove. Great job!
Another amazing what's on the bench video Thanks Matt appreciate all the work you do to give us great content every week if I had an FJ 40 I would do the gulf livery theme light blue orange white black. That was a wonderfully informative video ...well done sir. My son and I are looking for a body for our build right now... He said if he had that he would add a jungle patina

I think that I would go with kind of a blueish gray color. Always fun to watch some of your detailing techniques!
Thanks for watching!
I did indeed learn something this episode! Very cool! I think a sky blue with the black trim/ accents would look great on that FJ. Thank you sir for the paint tips!
You're welcome!
Howdy!
