I would like to thank you Mark for doing such a great job with this VLOG. I know that you put a lot of work into this one and you can see that in the finished product. You are an excellent interviewer as I always felt like I was having a chat with a mate rather than an interview. I'm glad we could get this message out to the public as it is such an important discussion topic. Keep up the good work. Cheers Troy Clarke
+Troy Clarke No thank you mate. We all agree that although you're all class on the bike, your courage and personal qualities dwarf your abilities on the bike. It's something for us all to aspire too. Chat soon bro. xx
This made me so happy! I was a heavy smoker and I quit for cycling. First year of cycling I was still smoking and realized how much damage it was doing to my body and quit. I am still afraid that it made a permanent negative impact on me. Seeing a pro racer that smoked and was dealing with psychological issues is so inspiring to see.
Troy - that was a brave interview. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for telling us your story. Your wife and kids must have a great love for you to journey with you through your dark battles. Keep strong mate.
I am glad I saw this old post. And what Troy said about as men we don't talk about our feeling and we suppress things. And the aftermath is you walk around broken. Beautiful post.
Inspirational is the word. Very true that you can't define your self worth by one thing, whether it's winning bike races or making money, you have to do what works for you. Powerful stuff.
Fairplay Troy. I can fully relate being a sufferer of anxiety and panic attacks since I was a teen. Some days are hard but cycling certainly helps. I imagine the reason Troy found his saddle uncomfortable was due to the extra weight he was carrying.
+Paul Malone I'm glad you got something out of this. I think my weight had a bit do do with my saddle issues but it started happening when i was fit, so i'm not 100% convinced. I eventually found an ISM Attack Saddle and haven't looked back.
+Troy Clarke tnx for the reply dude. Fairplay for speaking out as mental health is still a very taboo subject for most. I to ain't a shamed of what I've had to go through and if speaking out can help someone else thats all that matters.
Great video, very inspiring! Reminds me of this quote, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” Troy is now living his fullest potential and you can see the passion in his eyes and he's seem like he's got many more goals ahead of him. It's really nice to listen to someone so transparent about his personal battles.
Very interesting to hear another athletes perspective after having their pro career cut short due to injury. I had the same thing happen...got injured after the 2000 olympics at the start of my career and could never get back into it. Went through a lot of the things troy was talking about. Loving the high quality vlogs 👍
nice. Soccer was my main sport and I had problem with my Achilles tendon that would bother me as soon as I start playing. I stopped anything related to it out of frustration for an year. Very hard and emotional. Thanks for the video!!
Thank you Mark for providing us with this type of content. And even more so, thank you Troy for sharing the inspiring words. You are a true legend, mate.
Mark your interviews are nothing short of golden. Mate, you are really evolving to be a great interviewer without the cockiness or proper formal shit affiliated. Nice low camera angle as well- it was a great alternate angle to shoot from and audio quality is great now. RODE mic?
Well done, Troy. Thanks for this episode, Maven! Thank you Troy Clarke, too. That plaster analogy was absolutely bang on, right down to the particular language you used I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling that it really struck a chord. Trust me, every story like this helps someone. It helps hundreds. The more stories we hear like this, the more people can start helping themselves when they're in that hole, and the less difficult that step becomes for them to begin with. So good on you guys for putting this out! To everyone else, take care.
Thanks to Mark and Troy for sharing this, love the honesty shown here. I think sharing things like this makes it easier for everyone, especially guys, to. ask for help when it's needed!
How do you put into words how awesome this story is, I think I have viewed 3 or 4 times now! Instantly lifting my morale each time, brave on so many levels, inspiring and so relative for so many of us who have and are still currently going through the many faces of depression. I was lucky enough to meet Troy briefly and shook his hand congratulatory at a stkilda crit a few weeks back. Humble dude👍who I hope continues his positive path inspiring others and his own to do great things, this makes Troy not just a good human but a great one. Well done Mark on great interview, raw stuff.
Really great youtube vlog. Be it the footage of him winning the race, or the present day cafe stuff, he came across as very humble - and not just humbled by his mental illness.
This is the best Maven post I've watched in ages, inspirational and heart warming. I suffer from stress and depression, and cycling has been the only outlet I've had in years, which makes me feel good, forget the pain and feel more alive. Fair play Mark, and good on ya Troy...Cheers.
I think I've already seen him in your previous videos. Dunno, he looks familiar... Anyway, very nice video!!! Congrats, Mark!!! And Troy for sharing his story. Greetings from Brazil !!!
Your channel is getting better and better, Mark. Keep it up! It's with that kind of message that you'll reach to a broader audience. And Troy, you are amazing. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for the whole vid, such an incredibly inspirational story. Thanks for sharing!
Troy, great story! Glad that there is hope for all. Great words Troy! Very brave and inspirational! I see a lot of my own story in your words..thanks for a direction change!
Thank you Troy for sharing. Your honest story was very touching and eye opening. You are an inspiration. Thank you Maven for the video, this is one of your best so far.
Great vlog & great content, nice to see someone talking about the mental struggles and depression. Still too much taboo around the subject. All the best
Troy your story really does help and the more people who have the courage to open up like you did in this interview the better this world will be! Thank you
beautiful interview and a great to hear his story! Really makes one think about what you do and why, and how important perspective is. thank you for sharing Troy!
Quality stuff Troy. Can relate a scary amount to this. I was looking at a very promising future playing basketball. Had the opportunity to play in the USA at college but an injury stopped me from playing and i haven't been able to play since. Its hard trying to find yourself when your life has literally just been all about the sport and its been taken away from you. I too then went on a slipperly slope of food/drink/depression but thankfully cycling has really helped me cheer up a bit and lose some weight. I still avoid going to see my old teams and team mates play, gives me a bit of a sick feeling inside but i'm really happy on the bike. Loving the videos also Mark, Good stuff.
awesome video ! You can see and feel the real person in Troy. And Troy is right, you have to love what you do and your life becomes a party :-) . Good job.
Yeah Yeah +Hendrik Redant! Thank you for your kind words. Jonny speaks very highly of you so coming from a legend like you, your words mean a lot to me. You have to love the Ride, Yeah Yeah Hendrick!
@cycling maven I noticed Troy talking about enjoying the craft of cycling. I have a feeling Troy would be another great "master class" video! Love seeing him pop up in your videos, now that I know who he is. I met Hilton Clarke years back, when he was racing in southern California. Looks like the genes run through all the Clarke boys!
Hats off troy, until now i new you as troy the hitter in the UHC kit haha to hear your story and what you have been through makes me appreciate cycling that much more. Cycling Maven top work pal.
Just found this channel and man this interview is great. I have a personal journey with something very similar and Troy you're a great inspiration man.
Im new too cycling, I don't know who Troy Clarke is but what an inspiration! I really enjoyed this, and can relate too a lot of what he said, WOW. thanks Troy and Cycling Maven
Pretty impressive stuff to "come out" like that. Didn't "talk about feelings" with your Dad plus all the rest which is more powerful, I reckon there are stacks out there who went through the same thing for good for worse. Well done CM & Troy
What a great vlog... and story Mark. So glad I found this. Troy was so open with his feelings, emotions, and sharing some of the traumas of his cycling and family life. An inspiration to those who might be finding themselves in similar situations. All kudos to Troy for sharing this with us. p.s. this vlog should definitely be re-posted as many following your channel may not delve back far enough to find it.
+Scotsman In Paris I eventually came across an ISM Attack saddle. They are one of those split nose "TT/Triathalon" saddles. Being a traditionalist I hated the look of them but I was desperate. This saddle had a lot do with getting my cycling back.
+Scotsman In Paris I also copped a lot of flack from other cyclists about this saddle. However, since I've been going well at club races again, I've noticed people riding them after I had given them my recommendation!

+Cory Newton Thanks Cory.
+Cory Newton I tend to agree also.

Great Vlog, 20 minutes of my life I did not waste, thankyou.

+Tobia K such a great quote. The best quote I've heard on this topic. Thanks, Sarah :)
+Tobia K Thanks for your kind words. I agree with Sarah, I love the quote!
+Troy Clarke no worries mate, so good to see you doing what you love and sharing your passion with us!
I like it when people can be that honest and open. I strive to be like that all the time.
Troy, today you made a difference in someone's life. thank you for your courage and inspiration. And thank you Mark for making it happen.

+javelandy I'm glad you could relate. Thank you for your kind words.
That video at the start on the track with Troy and Leigh is GOLD!!!!!
We have the whole race on video (which I wanted to include) but the video would have been a bit long.
+Cycling Maven Why not upload the whole race with Troy and you commentating on it! haha
+PlantPedaler Dude!! That is genius! haha. You're a keeper man... first the glasses now this. xx
Haha no probs :D
+Lee Turner Ha ha! I dont think Leigh thinks it's GOLD!

Great video keep up the work! (the hard edits could go ,it would make the video feel more professional.}
How did he overcome the saddle position problem?
+Scotsman In Paris I eventually came across an ISM Attack saddle. They are one of those split nose "TT/Triathalon" saddles. Being a traditionalist I hated the look of them but I was desperate. When I first rode it I nearly threw it in the bin because it felt so different. All your weight goes onto your sit bones rather than your undercariage! I persisted and haven't looked back. +Troy Clarke Thanks for the response Troy, all the best mate cheers!
Hey troy it's Jomei that kid who loves cycling and you saw him get his track bike
good luck very good story for the young cyclist
So is Troy on the UHC roster or does he wear their kit because his brothers are?
+fitzy4578 Troy actually spoke about that but to keep the video length down, I had to leave it out.His two brother supply him with kit.
+fitzy4578 I'm no professional. I say to people that my sponsors are my 2 brothers as I get all their last years clothes!
Troy Clarke Cycling Maven ahhhh thanks for the responses guys! great video as always
i think Troy's generation grew up where your feelings weren't discussed. Hence so may issues resulting from same. It's ok for a bloke to say I aint travellin that well and I need help.
Yep so true damo.
Amazing interview! This harden up, teaspoon of cement, get on with it attitude has to stop.
I've just had a major accident on the bike ant 8 weeks later I'm getting back into it. I've gained close to 7kgs and lost my identity. I can only imagine what it must be like to have cycling as my career and family destiny and lose that. Well done mate.
I'll get back but my experience has shown me that lost identity (aka the office audax nut) is worth nothing. Treat the bike as a release so that one day when the bike isn't available, walking, paddling, swimming etc will take its place.
Once again, love your work Maven. I once thought vegan cycling was the sole preserve of the borderline but you've given me faith (and, by the way, someone to proudly recommend to my carnivore cycling mates). Well done!

Interesting. I didn't know he had a bad injury. I thought he gave it all up for girls :-)
Ha ha +Boogers Flogjobble. I definitely did my share of chasing girls when I gave up cycling!
+Troy Clarke HA. I bet. So, what DID you with the Austral money? :-) New Commodore?
Well done mate! You're a brave soul! keep pedaling!!!! I read a book of a similar individual that went thru some of the same ups and downs you had. Interesting read.
