Thank you so much for the video on this. Having been recently diagnosed with otosclerosis, I want to mention that I am sure my grandmother and mother had it.
Me too .
Glad I could help provide some clarity on the condition. Let me know what you end up doing for treatment!
I was diagnosed oto at 1988 in my left ear and had surgery then. It was OK for 15 years but started to deteriorate again. At 2004 my another ear started to weaken and again surgery . Same as my left ear it was OK for 15 years and now I am wearing hearing aids on my both ears. Surgery was Ok few years for me but not for a life time ! BTW I have high pitched tinnitus since then and now I have to lip reading when talking to people even with hearing aids.@@rachaelcookaud2695
I was diagnosed with otosclerosis when I was young (my mum also had the condition) In 1980, aged 17, I had a stapedectomy which was a success. 42 years later I have had to have my first hearing aids (probably due to age and a noisy career in construction, always wore ear defenders due to my history) this is just to say there can be a good surgical outcome so is always worth considering.
Thank you for letting us know, Philip! So glad to hear it was successful for you and an important point that over time, age-related and noise-related hearing loss will still be factors.
Why didn’t you opt for revision surgery?
@@sayantanidas2426 because my loss now is related more to age and noise damage rather than otosclerosis so revision unlikely to be very effective.
At 19, my ENT said my otosclerosis was the worst he had ever seen.
He didn’t want to preform surgery on someone so young, so he recommended me getting a hearing aid.
4 years later and I’m still very happy with my hearing aid.
Thanks for explaining so clearly!!
which hearing aid you are using?

I have had tinnitus since I was a pre-teen/teen. My doctor always said I had a cold but I knew that could not be right. In my 30's my hearing was obviously becoming worse. I was 40 when I had my first hearing aids and was told my hearing was past the point of having a stapedectomy. My hearing loss is considered profound now at age 68 but I have now had my first stapedectomy surgery. It has been almost a week and I can hear my husband. I am constantly scaring myself when I shut a door or cabinet because of the noise I have not heard for years! I may still have to use my hearing aid but I will be able to hear my grand babies without my hearing aids! My grandfather, my dad and 3 out of 4 of his children have otosclerosis.
Thank you for another informative video. Human bodies are complex systems and changes in their function can increase with age.
So true, Laura!
Excited to finally see something about oto. Thanks for this, can’t wait!
Thank you, Tracy!
Entirely new information to me. Thank you!
Many thanks for the video from the UK...waiting for my diagnosis.
Beautiful narration and very highly educative information. Thanks as I am one of the type of sufferings with my ears👂. God bless you🌹
Unrelated to this otosclerosis podcast, it would be INTERESTING to hear a PODCAST about ANC (automatic noise cancellation) for hearing-aid air travelers who don’t want hear jet turbine noise the whole flight, as would be the situation for normal-hearing travelers using ANC headphones.
Can anyone tell me whether this surgery create any pain?? Because am scared with surgeries, am postponding my surgery from last one year..
I am a60 year old Native American male diagnosed with otosclerosis last year after a horrible case of Covid in one ear I had the surgery that me got to a point that aids now work great. My question what’s the odds of the other going south???
The odds I was told is about 60% likely to develop both.
My insurance won't cover hearing aids for otosclerosis, but they will cover surgery, go figure! I had my first surgery 9/8/2022. Completely resolved Carhart's notch! Second surgery on 2/29.
Second surgery success so far! As a correction, the stapes footplate is still in place, however, a laser was used to notch into the footplate to allow the titanium prosthetic to rest securely in place.
